Richard Dawkins is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science author. He was formerly Professor for Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He was voted Britain's leading public intellectual by readers of Prospect magazine and was named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" for 2007.
Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term "meme". He is a prominent critic of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book "The Blind Watchmaker", he argued against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he described evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker. He has since written several popular science books, and makes regular television and radio appearances, predominantly discussing these topics.
Richard Dawkins is an atheist, secular humanist, sceptic, scientific rationalist, and supporter of the Brights movement. In his 2006 book "The God Delusion", he contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that faith qualifies as a delusion − as a fixed false belief.

@@AmazingAutist Male babies die every year from that, so in that case "simple" cutting of a male was far worse than FGM. Many places in the world wait until their males are of age that they can remember, hold them down, and cut their penis up. There are so many complications that happen, and "accidents" that happen all the time. A cousin's friend's kid has to piss through a straw until they can get surgery later because the doctor "slipped" and cut half the head off and cut into the urethra.
Dont forget that FGM isnt always like whats pictured in the video. There are different "types", type 2 is cutting only the clitoral hood off. The penis/foreskin is just like the clitoris and clitoral hood, just different sizes. They grow from the same structure as a fetus and thats why up close the clitoris looks like a penis. Im sure parents that cut their male babies wouldnt be ok with female clitoral hoods being cut off.

teppolundgren our beliefs are predicated upon our feelings, principles and personality. principles is what prohibits us from killing someone when we really want to. of course some people have principles based on propaganda which have led to many attrocities like the holocaust. remember its only obvious to you because of the things that prohibit you from believing it. things like principles founded in evidence and such.

    • @SpaceCattttt
      @SpaceCattttt 7 лет назад +2

Well, yes. But I'd have to presume that most of us who view this video,
live in the modern world, with access to the Internet (unless you're Chinese).
And if you have access to that, then you'd almost have to come from an
extremely fundamental background to remain unfazed or unaware of the
challenges that face your beliefs on a daily basis.
Thanks to the information age we live in, the world is shrinking.
People are connected to the entire world, no matter where they live,
which means that old-fashioned superstitions find it increasingly difficult
to stay alive, whereas rationality and scientific appreciation are flourishing
      like never before.
That's why what Mr. Dawkins says ought to be obvious by now.
But is it? No, because there remains an anomaly called religion, which is
currently fighting for its life, tooth and nail. But give it a couple of generations,
and the world might finally witness human beings who value common sense
      over myths and legends.
We're all going to die eventually, so it's about time we lose our fear of death
which has caused millennia of wishful thinking regarding an afterlife, and
start fucking getting on with the physically demonstrable life we have right now.

Very interesting and informative. I don't consider myself an atheist, and yet, he makes some very valid points. While the mass majority of religious people wouldn't commit the types of atrocities he speaks of, I have experienced many such believers treating other humans horribly, in other, much more subtle ways. Homophobia comes to mind. People will do things to others, that they would never want done to themselves, yet they believe they MUST act in such a way, so as to follow the words of their religious book. Not hating on religious people. Being I grew up in the church, I can look back and see the very same behavior in myself. We need to listen to Richard's words and reflect on how some of us treat each other in the name of a God.

Science and religion aren't somehow automatically mutually exclusive. There have been many religious scientists through history, and there still are.
Science will keep advancing whether there's religion or not. Religion is more of a spiritual fulfillment for an individual, to give them some kind of a purpose in life/a way of life and so forth, science is just the advancement of human knowledge and understanding of the world/universe we live in. Though, in some extreme cases, it could be indeed that for some people religion might be a partial "curiosity killer", such as that they won't even bother to question things because God/their holy book explains everything. Those cases can be quite bad indeed, because curiosity is the driving force in the advancement of science/human understanding.

    • @abdullaalalawi4176

Yes there is a connection of atheism and bad acts because if you dont believe in god then you will have no boundaries and you could do everything bad that you can imagine because you think that god is not watching you and that you won't be judged after you die. If you fear god then you will not even think of doing bad even if you could. E.g. Muhammed Ali refused to go to war even if it means going to jail because said he will never kill vietnams due to his religious beliefs. Religion is supposed to make you a better person but unfortunately some people try to hijack it and distort the image of religion by changing the scriptures, by hate speeches and by causing death and destruction.

To be thurough, the 4 laws of thermodynamics follow:
0th law: if two otherwise isolated systems are in equilibrium with a 3rd, all 3 in thermal equilibrium
1st law: heat and work are forms of energy transfer: baring energy transfer out of a system, total energy never changes
2nd law: a completely closed system always evolves towards thermal equilibrium (aka. entropy always has a net increase until equilibrium is reached)
3rd law: a system at absolute zero moves towards a constant entropy.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. I have lost a sister 2 years ago. She was a sweetheart. I have lost several men in combat and some dear to me but that is a part of life we don't understand. Why good people suffer and die while vile and pure trash keep on doing evil and seemingly with no impunity. But like the sage once said, "there's a pay day some day" and their judgement neither sleeps nor slumbers but is set and will be brought to fruition.

For example, if the baby is being christened in a Catholic church, it is the parents saying the child is Catholic, NOT the child saying it.

***** Agree, religion has been widely used during thousands of years for brain wash and to promote lack of guilty for disgusting acts. I agree with Dawkins in many things, as to promote education and that anyone builts is own opinion, without external influences (priest, scientist and especially parents). In my opinion religion should be forbidden to childs, people should start to investigate about religion, science and philosophy until they have enough maturity to rise a personal opinion. My concern is the people that take atheism as a medium to promote selfishness or the people that transform atheism in a great businnes, is that follows in that way atheism will become a very bad thing and actually will be similar to a religion or sect.

    • @SmultronsyltNatha

Jymmi Pach I see that there is a risk that atheists start to build in other beliefs or opinions (like Atheism+), however, I don't think that such a simple word will ever shift in meaning and be defined as something like a religion. If that happens, a large group of people will feel that they don't identify with that and create a new word that means what atheism means today. My point is that the people who call themselves atheists don't share much more than the lack of belief in gods.

Lucas Goad Religion is the means by which most of those things are justified, but not the actual cause. There is probably some small amount of people who are psychologically damaged by religion, and do things they otherwise wouldn't do. But most are just doing what they already want to do.

    • @GuyRegular

+Lucas Goad Real world statistics and observations clearly point out that religion is not a road to healthier societies and quality of life:
The level of atheism throughout the rest of the developed world refutes any argument that religion is somehow a moral necessity, Countries like Norway, Iceland, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Japan, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Kingdom are among the least religious societies on Earth. According to the United Nations’ Human Development Report (2005) they are also the healthiest, as indicated by measures of life expectancy, adult literacy, per capita income, educational attainment, gender equality, homicide rate and infant mortality. Conversely, the 50 nations now ranked lowest in terms of human development are unwaveringly religious. Other analyses paint the same picture: The United States is unique among wealthy democracies in its level of religious literalism and opposition to evolutionary theory; it is also uniquely beleaguered by high rates of homicide, abortion, teen pregnancy, STD infection and infant mortality. The same comparison holds true within the United States itself: Southern and Midwestern states, characterized by the highest levels of religious superstition and hostility to evolutionary theory, are especially plagued by the above indicators of societal dysfunction, while the comparatively secular states of the Northeast conform to European norms. Of course, correlational data of this sort do not resolve questions of causality--belief in God may lead to societal dysfunction; societal dysfunction may foster a belief in God; each factor may enable the other; or both may spring from some deeper source of mischief. Leaving aside the issue of cause and effect, these facts prove that atheism is perfectly compatible with the basic aspirations of a civil society; they also prove, conclusively, that religious faith does nothing to ensure a society’s health.

    2) The 'modern' bible didn't even exist until the council of Nicea in 325 A.D. They selected the books they wanted and 'discarded' others which conflicted with their doctrine. Early Christian canon consisted of approximately 600 books. It was reduced to 80 by 1611 for the 'King James Translation'. A further 14 books were discarded subsequent to the Protestant Reformation which left 66 books remaining for the official 'King James Bible'.

Obviously just the four Gospels and a little out of Acts for two, but like I mentioned, go to skeptics annotated Bible and it points out 473 contradictions, and what I mentioned are three of them.
If you go to the wiki article, Gospel harmony, you'll also see all the areas where the Gospels match up or don't match up.
Nativity is only in two of them, not in Mark, and Mark is the oldest and shortest showing how the story expanded over time.
I bet you can explain....but it would be grey noise.

    1. Carbon 14 is not normally used in dating rocks, because the half-life is just over 5000 years, so if you think that it is millions of years old, then there should be no carbon 14 left and so usually a different isotope is used like U to Pb or Be to Li. If there is any Carbon 14 in a rock it would indicate a very 'young rock' like the coal and diamonds mentioned in the link in my previous reply which you didn't read. So Carbon 14 in these items indicates a very young age.

    1. The few things that I found were about faith based on works, and faith alone. That seems to be the major shift in what people think Paul and James disagree on. However....James is not saying you have to do good works for salvation, rather that salvation will change a person and they will do good works.

In doing so, they have overlooked the fact that the high priests, priestesses n oracles found among the ancient mythical cults are recognized within an already established temple and never claimed to have received a new code of life based on revelation. Likewise the validity of their claims were never put to question because their authority was traditionally handed down to them by their predecessors and was accepted as such by the society, so were free to concoct gimmicks in their support.

I agree, in a debatable fashion, science in itself could be considered a religion if we rely solely on the dictionary. However, many dictionaries also classified the word "Atheist" as one who denies the existence of a supreme being (or deity), so to say the term "Atheist" doesn't define us according to the dictionary is in itself a self-disproving statement.
