Aaron, here`s another one comment : The vast majority of western Christians ( more, European ones ) are exactly like him ( the Bishop ). It only lies within the gift of the none - religious to do a little digging and find it.
Amazing video. Just two humans discussing their thoughts. Responding to each others questions with non aggresive tone. Proof that we can all get along!
As someone who regards religion as basically a psychological crutch (pretend friends for adults), I have to admit the Bishop seems like an intelligent, compassionate, open-minded man. I don't agree with all his views, but he's to be respected - unlike many of his fundamentalist brethren.
I'm such a sucker for compromise. When I encounter someone like this bishop, I'd almost immediately hug him out of respect. Dawkins has the ability to rank him justly with appropriate, not superfluous, emotion: a liberal Anglican. I need to re-engineer myself to be more like Dawkins :(
This guy might be the most logical christian I've ever seen. Granted he still believes in a fallacy but he has accepted all reality and logic around him aside from that. I actually have quite a bit of respect for him. He even has a very civil and intellectual debate with the opposition.
@@rahul27668 I have a lot of disagreements with him but that doesnt mean I don't dislike him. I think some of his points are valid while others are ridiculous.

Just finished watching the whole thing. It's great to see two intellectuals having an intelligent and open minded discussion about this very controversial topic. Both provide excellent arguments for their respective opinions.
First of all i'm an atheist. I've seen dozens anda dozens of videos of Richard Dawkins and i'm a big fan of such an incredible intelligent men. But i must say... this is one of the few (if not the only one) videos where i saw a very sensible and wise religious man having a productive conversation with RD.
Good to see two people with different opinions conversing in a respectful and intelligent manner. Just imagine if Bill O'Reilly tried to have this debate with Michael Moore
his match? perhaps as a blustering sort of windbag.(they are both longwinded) Life is a person's gift, no matter where it came from so it is ultimately their's. I love Dawkins and have been looking for this interview for weeks.
havent found it here, but I recall a PBS show on String theorists, acting and speaking as mystics having a mystical and even peak experience, describing their findings :-) These were scientists, enthralled by the direction their empirical studies were taking them. Awe...and faith that Truth will continue all reality. Pretty cool, and pretty close to the realm of faith.

No, as a Catholic I follow Him,this was one of Jesus' teachings so it's correct to preach it. unbelievers are damned because He told us, but its nice that you acknowledge there is a Hell and therfore God does exist. Thanks for making that point.
This bishop seems like a very reasonable man. Maybe, if more priests and bishops or Christians in general were like him, Christianity wouldn't seem to be so batshit insane.
Dawkins pointed out two ironies that were excellent points (and perhaps were lost a bit on this clergyman): 1. That the promise of assisted suicide upon demand when one is ready in the future might make fewer people take their own lives earlier. 2. That the religious that believe in a glorious afterlife seem inclined to not let this life end any time soon, while the nonbelievers favor allowing the ending of the only life we may have at an earlier time if the pain of living becomes great enough. One has to admire this man’s logic.
No problem. I do have to say that there is an aspect of this subject that refuses to be decided once and for all, except in the minds of the obstinate.
very true, i think that what dawkins argues however (maybe not in this exact videos but in the other parts of this interveiw and in his book) is that as long as this type of religion (contextual) exists, so does fundamentalist religion
Finally. A Christian on TV showing we are not ALL loonies. A large number of us are, but not all! Bishop Harries is exactly right, especially homosexuality.
Some would argue that there is a very large danger in compromise and adaptation to everything ... Discretion must be paramount, and making sure not to compromise the faith.

@Spell5000 I think you misunderstood the question. I did not ask whether you believe you can make choices or not. I asked if God knows forehand what choices you are goin to make? If you answer yes: Is it possible for you to change your mind and do something else. Making God wrong about his prediction?
Suddenly Paul McCartney looks so incredibly alert & surprised! It must be due to the meat that's been ablated from his upper eye sockets that had gradually blocked his alertness with the passing of time.
This argument proves, if anything, the BBC needs to use its license fees better. Here's a hint: buy two cameras. I'm almost surprised Dawkins didn't suddenly say as an aside 'Ah it appears we've run out of time, the BBC camera is due to record another episode of Topgear in 10 minutes'
The more I watch stuff like this, the more I wish that this sort of mentality would become more commonplace. After all, two people with otherwise opposing views, but able to have a reasonable and rational discussion without pointing out the others ideology and using that to claim that the other person is wrong is just something that you rarely seem to find.
The reason he is so open-minded and logical is because he lives in a country where Atheism and Agnosticism are over 80%. As opposed in the United States where it is the reverse. If he wants to get paid from religious donations he better keep being pretty damn agreeable with his flock.
where do you get that? Or are you being sarcastic? All I see are two GENTLEMEN, and I mean that quite in the totally literal sense of the world (intelligent, considerate, polite, classy), discussing their differences, and quite readily acknowledging much...if not all...or each others points.
Why can't all religious people be more like Bishop Harries? Because there would be no problem whatsoever. I like the guy, he's smart, funny and knows that religion has to adapt to the present day-world.
2) Once these new elements you might call them fused and started to connect to each other again a new more complicated one and ones that were ever so slightly incompatible with the rest eventually died out. This process continued for probably millions of years until we had a complex system of new "elements" (theres a more proper name than elements that I do not know) and this new thing is now the foundation of life our DNA that is shared by all living things on this planet.
I very much like the Bishop of Oxford in this video. However, I think that he should have mentioned that a metaphorical interpretation of the Genesis story was promoted by Augustine 1500 years ago and that many early Hebrew and Christian scholars raised issues about whether Genesis was a literal or metaphorical text and that Darwin was 'partly' inspired by the work of early Victorian, Christian scientists who began to develop a concept of biological adaptation.
"The fact of evolution is the backbone of biology, and biology is thus in the peculiar position of being a science founded on an improved theory, is it then a science or faith?" -- Charles Darwin
If I was a moderate Christian (I'm an atheist,)I would probably argue that we are all imperfect, we all sin, and thus we all need salvation (and then quote Romans 3:23.) The story of Adam and Eve illustrates that man is imperfect and rebellious by nature and this is why we need salvation. I don't believe in this anymore than you do, but I'm just throwing it out there as a possible explanation.
@geiroffenberg I don't think religion necessarily has anything to do with intelligence, though it's certainly true that it's easier to be suckered by fairytales if you're unintelligent. To me, it's more of a psychological issue, hence my use of the phrase "psychological crutch". Incidentally, almost all those names you mentioned were clearly NOT unintelligent, but came from times (in some cases, different millennia), where only a fraction of the knowledge we have today was available to them.
@AisulosDaimonion I agree! No matter how glaring the evidence is, we should just ignore it, never challenge anything new and keep our noses glued to a 2000 year old book. That's the way forward!
« It is people that fool themselves and others. » I still find it curious that there should be such heavy resistence to specific scientific findings, be they erroneous or not. Why is this?
I met Harries long ago in his home and formed the impression that he is arrogant and unpleasant. Since then when I heard him speak on the Radio 4 'Thought for the day' segment I thought 'What a hypocrite'. This video makes me wonder if I was wrong - or is Harries a competent actor?
This is beautiful. Two people who disagree just debating with not a hint of anger and an open ear. Why can't we all do this?
What a calm, intellectual and respectful exchange. A very British conversation. haha
If all religious people were like him I wouldn't have a problem wih them. It's refreshing to see.

Wow, Richard Dawkins actually agreeing with an opposing party. I'm saving this one! I think it has a lot to do with respect.
