  • Richard Dawkins (author of "The God Delusion") gave a lecture at the Eden Court Theater (watch the whole lecture here: /view_play_list?p=9EF8FE04FE423B06) and the last audience question asked was from this deeply disturbed faithful christian believer. Richard Dawkins answers him rather succinctly...

      This man should answer the question: why do only christians met Jesus ?

    • @soilmanted
      @soilmanted 5 лет назад +1

      I think Mr Dawkins misunderstood what was behind the man's question. An hallucination is a misperception that is believed. In vision, it is an optical illusion that is believed. For example if you look at fog on the surface of a mountain in the morning, and you perceive it as smoke, you are having an optical illusion. If you don't look again with skepticism, and just presume it really is smoke, then you are having an hallucination. If you believe it is smoke, and you make up a story about someone starting a forest fire that burns down 3 houses, then you are experiencing a delusion. The man was not experiencing a misperception of something. What the man was doing was believing a story that propagandists had told him, a made-up story. A complete story that was made up, based on something observed but then running off on a tangent and adding imaginary things, in addition - is a delusion, not a hallucination. The man, in believing what he was told, was sharing a delusion. That is different thing than hallucinating. It is greatly more divorced from reality than simply having an optical illusion, or having an hallucination. I think Mr Dawkins was being overly cautious in telling the man he was hallucinating. Making the mistake of thinking it might be kinder to say "hallucination" than "delusion." I think it would have been better, and kinder, to come right out and say: you are suffering from a delusion.
      I'm not saying it is ever kind to say to someone "you are a nut, or you are a psycho, or even say I think you are suffering from a mental illness. That would have been comtemptuous and degrading. But "I think you are experiencing delusions" can be said without seeming derogatory. Yes delusions can make someone feel good, as well as make someone feel bad. Delusions that make you feel good may tend to be behaviorally reinforced by those good feelings. That may explain the persistence of some delusions, even absolutely ridiculous delusions like "he is risen" unless by "he is risen" they meant like what happens when you add leavening to glutinous wheat flour, and what metaphorically happens to people when they eat too much of that stuff, especially if it is accompanies by added fats and sweeteners - cookies and cakes as opposed to bread. The cake is risen; you eat a lot of it and you be "risen" too. Maybe Jesus ate a lot of cookies and cakes, and someone remarked: "Jesus Christ, is he risen!" and over the years it got misconstrued to mean he got up and walked away AFTER having died, rather than correctly understood to mean he got so fat from eating so much cake that he could barely get up and walk.

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino 5 лет назад +13

      You need to look up the definition of "delusion" and "hallucination" because you don't seem to know the difference. He said that he literally met Jesus - that would be a hallucination. A delusion would be BELIEVING that donkeys can talk (Numbers 22:30) even if you've never seen it happen - that would be called "delusional thinking" if you believe that it's even possible. I'm not concerned with whether or not someone feels offended or degraded - I don't give a fuck how someone feels about the truth. If they don't like what's true then maybe they should just kill themselves because you can't escape the truth. You can try to by burying your nose in a book full of lies which is exactly what Christians try to do all the time but the truth doesn't change because a majority of people believe in it or don't believe in it. Christians hate the truth because it conflicts with their bible which is why Christians lie constantly. I don't even think they understand that they are lying though because a person who has brain damage doesn't know the difference between lying and telling the truth. Especially if they have damage to a specific part of the brain called the "Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex" (which Christians do).

    1:21 "I can not afford to build my life on hallucination" that sentence exactly explains why he can't change his mind. Because he would find out that 50 years of his life was wasted believing nonsense. It would be suicidal for his brain and ego. He would first need to allow himself to afford to change his mind and accept the brainwash. It could take years to heal the anger and resentment but he could eventually heal the delusion and come out healthy.

      So what you are saying is his delusions and belief systems are so ingrained into his identity and reality that one must tip toe on eggshells in trying to address said delusion. I say that, doing so is not only inhumane, but far less effective. You cannot speak of the virtue and say that one with delusion must be handed preferential treatment; when that delusion not only has and does harm to ones own grounding in reality, but also compels them to try and do the same to you. I also say that the more blunt the strike of reality, the more damaging it is to their belief system. This is exactly the point, and to that end, Dawkins was right on the money.

    • @Ashoerchen
      @Ashoerchen 8 лет назад +3

      The club never has been an educative instrument of any value. All it does is increasing acrimony, aggression and conflict. Insisting that applying it is the only fair way of dealing with delusions is in most cases a poor camouflage for testosterone overflows and/or an unwillingness to think deeper. You can tell as much from 90% of the atheist vs. religion posts, resp. their captions, who claim that this or that person "destroyed", "owned", "mopped the floor with" their respective opponents. Apart from the fact that they are mostly unbelievably overstating the actual proceedings, they apparently all run the same argument (to quote you): "Being mild is not only inhumane, but far less effective".
      Don't get me wrong. I enjoy watching a good fight, the types Dawkins or Hitchens fight or fought. Beyond the bravado, there is always something to learn, and you have a good time on top.
      But these are fights among equals - more or less. And Dawkins, this time, lacked in basic human values because he did not pick someone his own size for his fighting mode. If Vladimir Klichko fights an amateur, he will not knock him out. He will have the grace to gently show his opponents his limits without making him lose his face. The responsibility of wrecking, of devastating a poor, simple old man for falling for religious gobbledygook in his lifetime weighs much heavier than the merit of having made the case for skepticism, agnosticism or atheism just one more time. Showing that kind of chivalry has nothing to do with condoning superstition, and failing to do so a lot with immaturity.
      So I think Dawkins was not at all right on the money.

      Valkyrie Sardo That's the problem with Christians. Their religious beliefs become a part of them personally. So whenever someone challenges their beliefs or provides evidence that their beliefs are wrong, they take it as a personal affront to them intend of being able to question their belief as well. When describing a complicated event one can use words that are symbolic or have meanings known only to the educated. It is also used to hide meanings from others who do not have a need to know. Example. Adam and Eve spoke to a snake. Clearly it was not a snake since it was cursed later to crawl on the ground. So what was it? It is not important. The event is what is important yea? Without a full knowledge of Hebrew we will not likely know the various meanings attached to the word that sounds like the word used also for snake. There is no need for prooving anything if you feel something you call "God", its self-enough. But these religious idiots are having 0 experiences of numinous things and thats the reason they are believing in it EXTERNALLY. Its not damn external thing, nor is hallucination... its subjective set of self-transcendence paths that are magnetizing eachother to a state of profound immersive intuitive understanding of everything... these experiences are pretty much real, but you need to work on yourself very much, reading, experiensing things, music, movies, writtings, wonderings... lots of spiritual tunning so it COULD occure... I mean, its not something that is certain, for sure not if u r intentionally seeking for it, you'll miss it for sure.. just believe me: God is HUMANS idea. There is no God in sky or anywhere OUTSIDE of ourselves. And when i say ourselves, i mean this: your profound experience is only comprehendable by that name - "God", and that is the name u should use not to persuade other people in anything but to be closer to yourself and your spiritual awareness. “The gods we’ve made are exactly the gods you’d expect to be made by a species that is about half a chromosome away from the chimpanzee.” - Christopher Hitchens said. Thought one breed of monkeys is more human that man.
      The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobia, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. In the New Testament he gets worse.
      Imaginary God was a vindictive as hell. And Jesus is more punishing than bastardy god. He believed and liked the idea of eternal punishment or never spoke out against it. Infinite torture for you even if you are moral. His criteria for getting into heaven is contemptible, disgusting - believe in me, that’s all it takes. A close reading of the Old Testament is filled with horrendous lessons on how to treat people. A god that kills almost everyone on Earth in a flood: that’s pretty crazy. A god that commands Joshua to murder all the women and children except for the young girls, who can be taken as sex slaves. The 10 commandments tell you that working on Saturday is a sin and the first four commandments are vanity plate for god. God eventually goes into great detail about how to deal with cattle thieves, isolating women on their period, and which fabrics to wear at the same time; but nowhere in those ten commandments, or in the six hundred and three that come after it, does it say “Don’t abuse children,” or “Don’t enslave people,” or “Don’t rape.” The Bible was written by human beings at a time when stealing a person’s livestock was a crime punishable by death, but raping a young girl was easily remedied by following it up with a marriage proposal. Jesus cleaned it up but still believe in Hell for moral non-believers (atheists are as moral as believers .. look it up in any scientific study. Of course shallow minded people won't). Jesus and religion is a shakedown; I got matches and you're flammable.
      Delusion is just part of the problem.. god can be such a bad mentor.

This word was a bit tart. What he should of said was that there is a difference between feelings and beliefs, and the facts. I am a big fan of Richard Dawkins but he is only a human and at times he makes mistakes. The word cruel is also not applicable to Richards answer either. Perhaps poor taste but not cruel especially with the way this individual asked the question!!!

      I don't think Dawkins was being in the least bit cruel. He acknowledged the man's sincerity, a gentle way of saying that whilst he didn't think the man was lying, he was hallucinating. Hallucinating implies hearing of seeing something that isn't there. In fact, I'd have preferred the professor had been a little stronger and used the word delusional, which implies an almost willful self-deceit, or at least a pathological cause of such.

    • @queenfanpiper6299
      @queenfanpiper6299 10 лет назад +4

      Tristian Trigg Good point. The definition of seeing is the key to me. Is it visually seeing, mentally seeing or "spiritually" seeing. A visual seeing of something not there is felt by most mental health professionals to be a hallucination. And there is medication for that. I am an atheist and feel that praying is just talking to one self. But there are those, and I was one of them that really feel that someone is listening. The uploader used the word cruel which implies insensitive in a severe way. I'm with you. I didn't see that. But, most of these fanatics will see any arguments about their illusions as cruel. I use to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses. So I know. If it were me I would say to the guy what I usually tell these people. " Emotional feelings are what they are. But facts are facts. Your not presenting me facts." Cheers!

A theory in this case just means that it is open to be dis-proven but can not be dis-proven both mathematically or physically. Biology (Dawkin's feild) is a little more disjointed that that of mathematics or physics in this sense, where we have evolution, where there is abundant evidence for that to be true, and none against it. The only reason it is not a law is that we have not had 100 million years to observe it. Dawkins does work more along these lines, however in his speakings and his knowledge of science and specifically biology and love for the arts has gone into a more philosophical role, promoting atheism, or more accurately agnosticism and making ones own choices, while still voicing his opinion on subjects. I would also agree that on average those that do not believe in god are intellectually superior with regards to religion. Studies have been done (The pew forum is one) that shows Atheists/Agnostics are more informed on multiple religions than the religious are of their own.

      As I said though the studies show on average atheists/agnostics know more about religion that the religious.
      This is maybe down to the religious finding what they want to know from their religion and that being enough to have the peace they seek. Alternatively being introduced to religion from a young age and taught not to question god. I met some Mormons trying to convert people recently and when they stopped me I only responded with a few answers and they swiftly became stumped. I was surprised by their lack of knowledge of something they are devoting their life too.
      Atheists and agnostics maybe know more as they want to know more about what it is that they are rejecting. This is most likely because only a few decades ago non-believers were questioned for not being part of the majority. Ironically I feel it is the other way around now and in 2021 it's hard to find religious millennials.

      So many religions predate the modern divisions of Christianity, it’s hard for me to take anyone boasting of “scripture” seriously.
      My historic take on religion is that it’s meant to quell the masses and keep people in “a certain line” to easily control an individual.
      If someone of said religion steps out of line herd-mentality takes over to vilify a person and make them feel terrible.

      @macswad 2 года назад +1

      I would not claim Prof. Dawkins was speaking the truth but he is at least nearer the truth. The human mind is by far the most complex organ to be found anywhere in the known universe. The truth is that science is only just beginning to unravel the mystery of the human mind. From an evolutionary stand point homosapien Brain Cell DNA & Structure has probably remain unchanged for the last 300,000 years. I prefer the words meditation, prayer or salah to the word hallucinating which implies a person has taken medication. With meditation this sincere person believes he has communicated to a higher authority where infact he has unlocked an area of his subconciousness which feels intense love. The whole experience has changed him. His entire life & belief system changed forever. Science still has a long way to go before it can explain consciousness. The well being mindfulness industry can learn a lot from religion.

    I have was attending a religious ceremony that a very sweet friend had invited me to. The preacher was a lovely guy from San Diego, he played guitar and there was a band. My son was about 10 and joined in on the drums. It was not an unpleasant experience. One member of the congregation, who was visibly suffering from some emotional distress, had been homeless until recently and was obviously in need of mental health care. He told everyone about his many conversations with God. The preacher, who is a wise man, took him aside and talked to him. There is a knife edge between those that want to believe that a Supreme being is looking out for us and if we are good children he will reward us, and those that are not right in the head. Our laws are based on this crap.
