Fun fact - the US has no federally mandated lunch breaks. A number of states have a law about it, but there are plenty of people who just don’t get breaks or are made to work through them and it’s 100% legal for their employers to do that to them.

I had no one else to watch the kids so I had to work the summer camp for 10-11 hours straight. My manager then told my I was “killing labor costs,” because I wasn’t clocking out when my shift ended, because there was no one else there.

Another problem with the guy buying his employee gifts is that if you quit after it goes too far, he may end up trying to demand the items back. It puts you in a weird sort of dependency on your boss.

    • @audreydoyle5268
      @audreydoyle5268 26 дней назад +18

Yep, it's a power trip to ensnare an employee in a potential felony charge. If the gross amount of the gifts are over a certain worth, you can be charged and jailed for felony theft if you don't return the gifts. The person pressing charges has to claim and prove that they were lending the items to you. The only loophole, surprisingly, out of this bind is to defend yourself with the pretense of these items given to you were "gifts". Gifts under the law, in most places I assume, transfer ownership to the recipient. Even if the giver has receipts.
So you can be charged for not returning gifts, but if you claim they were gifts, then you're fine. Weird. Don't ask me how I know. I had an ex sugar daddy boss.. it was a weird situation, but I'm lucky it didn't get that far legally cause he was madly in love with me. Probably still is 🤢

Laughing in US citizen at the confusion about lunch breaks. Depending on what state you live in here, it's likely you have no rights as a worker at all, outside of a federal minimum wage, and a requirement to offer you health insurance you pay for if you're a full time employee. Workers in the US are fairly often treated that way.

To give everyone a cheer-up: My boss is one of the best imo. Unrelated, but an interesting fact, she’s lesbian and not shy about it so she doesn’t take shit from customers who are rude to her employees (esp those being homophobic, transphobic, racist, etc). One time my girlfriend (transfem who also happens to be lesbian) was getting yelled at for a customer for basically no good reason except her having a slightly deeper voice. The customer was basically yelling at her, telling her she should find god or something and telling her to get a manager. Ofc she called our boss and, skipping the details, the customer in the end got banned from the store and allowed my gf to work in the back for the rest of her shift so she wouldn’t have to deal with any customers for the day :). So yes there are some amazing managers out there and I’m glad for it. There’s more reasons she’s an amazing boss but this was one of the times her amazingness (is that a word?) stuck out to me. Anyway, have a fantastic day for everyone who is reading this :>

That one about the housekeeper fainting & being basically told that they need to keep working hits home for me. I nearly ended up in the hospital twice at a former job because the supervisor cared more about following a list of when people were to go to breaks & lunches. Once I was over 30 minutes past my break time & I called her to ask if I could go to break. She told me to hold on but I ended up having to leave on my own because my symptoms were getting worse. When I got back she was going on about how I messed up her "plans" & that if I had just waited she would have come over. I started looking for a new job after that because while she was saying she was understanding of my medical needs her actions said otherwise. The second time was while I was waiting for my background check to be finished at another place so I could put in my two weeks notice. This time however it was worse. I almost fainted & literally had to all but drag myself over to nearby bench. I couldn't even lock my station because I was so weak & didn't want to end up on the floor. It ended up taking me 2 full candy bars to get my suger up enough just so I could get to the break room. I put in my two weeks notice after that & flat out refuse to ever work their again. Not to mention that I will not step foot in any of their stores outside of one were some friends work. Otherwise I wouldn't go in there at all

These stories reminded me of my bad job experiences. My first one was when I worked at Applebee’s. I’ll give you a list of what happened while I was working there. 1) We had a regular that started yelling about us needing them to sign their names (this was during covid) when I tried to ask him about it. If he just shut up for one second, he’d hear me tell him that he didn’t have to cuz it was optional. 2) On a particularly busy day, I was getting too overwhelmed and ended up having a meltdown in the bathroom. My employers told me to stop crying and get back to work. 3) There was a drunk man rambling about trans people and being “politically correct” to me. I was stuck because he was blocking the entrance and I was a hostess so I had no choice but to stand there and nod. I’m pretty sure he clocked me as trans and that’s why he started ranting. His son came back from the bathroom and apologized to me. 3) When I finally quit, my employers suddenly felt that I was a valuable member of the team, that they really needed me, that I was their best employee. If that’s the case, then why didn’t it ever feel like that? Why did y’all constantly berate me over every little thing if you truly valued my work? Now I see why they were always so short staffed.
My other bad job experience was working as an in home caregiver, basically assisted living employee. Here’s what happened at that job: 1) They were extremely disorganized and seemed to never keep things consistent. 2) Some of the patients they had us caring for were entitled assholes. 3) On the section of my application that asked about allergies, I specifically put that I am severely allergic to cats since I knew we’d be taking care of patients with pets in their home. Well, one time, when they needed someone to take another caregiver’s shift, they asked me to do it and I accepted. Guess what was in their house? Not one, not two, but THREE goddamn cats. I immediately called them to get someone else because if I stayed there for more than 10 minutes, I wouldn’t be able to see anything from my eyes swelling and literally start suffocating to death. They practically put my life at risk because they couldn’t read my goddamn papers all the way through 🤦🏻 Very unfortunate first introduction to employment.

They care about the look of their food, and the speed to which it is served to them. Would have been quicker to make a whole new coffee, strangely. Because they may have to brew a whole new espresso just to top it off a tiny bit. Not worth it. Ruins the work flow, and better to just restart, doing it double time. The espresso machine might be a double pour and the other shot went to another coffee. Also, opening the lid to scoop out the cream and pour extra milk and coffee just seems a bit unsanitary to me for some reason.

That is so controlling, since you can't ever plan something for the day on the off-chance you work. That is such a shitty practice, how is that legal??

Not to like blame autistic people for people being ableist against us, but I think it's possible that mom was aso autistic but not self aware of it. I was diagnosed in my twenties and in hindsight I think several family members are autistic too, but because no one was diagnosed I heard a lot of comments in the sense of "this is normal we all feel this way and you just have to live with it". Her comment of "just learn social skills" gives me the same vibe, like "well everyone has to spend hours every day studying how to do social interactions, duh"

this reminded me of when I had a summer job at the same place two years in a row, for context it was a restaurant and she had only teenagers as employers and I have really bad period pain, like i eilll faint and throw up (got medicine now so it's better but didn't then) And one time i gt my period while i was there and got really lightheaded and nauseus. She told me to go to the "staff building" (it was a cabin) and i was alone in the bathroom according to my coworker for 45 minutes before she sent someone after me (she knew I had bad periods btw) and that was just to ask me whenever I could be ready to come up again and if i really needed the pause. My coworker saw how bad it was as i was laying on the floor, she called up my boss and i got to go home. When i came back a few days later she told me I needed to learn to manage my period better and i told her that I needed painkillers (which only helped a little but it was something) and she said that I should just learn to deal with the pain and that painkilers was a waste...

Hearing those stories makes me glad I live in a country with very specific laws to protect the workers. I'm an intern in a fertilizer company, and have paid vacation, meals buget, transportation buget, health care, dental care and mental health care. I even get what is called the 13th, wich is a double paycheck at december.
Not saying is perfect, far from that. We're still fighting to abolish the jobs that take over 5 days a week, bc is honestly insane to have someone working over 50 hours plus weekends, but I hope someday we'll be able to get to a place where the workers are better treated by the companies.

the girl in the boss story where the boss hit on her after firing I think was wrong about the probationary period. True, the boss doesn't -HAVE- to give a reason for firing you at that time.... but if he mentions a reason, he's the one opening up those grounds. He's the one who gave the reason as being OP's depression and not wanting to accommodate (if needed, not that it had needed to be at the time). I feel like a number of things from that story would have him sued out the ass

Have I got a story for you about the parasocial relationship topic next time. Basically I for the longest time had a crush on some Japanese voice actress who did the voice of my favorite fictional character from a show I like. I remember I tried joining a literal manifestation community on amino, and got pretty much shunned by the entire community for trying to manifest a relationship with my celebrity crush. Funny thing was they didn’t shun anyone else who was manifesting their crushes/celeb crushes. Their only reason as to why they didn’t want me to manifest my crush was because I’m transgender and gay. And the staff members of the community said I was a predatory queer freak for trying to manifest my crush just like all the straight girls and guys were doing in this community. I then left and never went back, as soon as I left the community I was in, I got noticed by my celebrity crush several times, she even liked my love confession under her instagram post. Course I don’t know what she meant by liking my love confession comment but whatever. The story ends with me getting a budding romantic relationship with another person who actually loves me and is gender-fluid just like me. I met them on a queer dating app and were currently planning a vacation together once we get past the ice breaking stage of our relationship. I pretty much forgot all about my celebrity crush and now I just feel happy about my new friend/budding romantic relationship. So yeah, the story has a very happy ending indeed! 🩷 but moral of the story, sometimes love comes to you when you’re not actively searching for it. And sometimes people are emotionally unavailable and others are judgmental. But now I have a friend who loves me and I’m currently writing a sci-fi fantasy novel and I am going to a job interview with the Sephora store within a department store! Wish me luck! 🍀

So I THINK this counts as a parasocial relationship. It’s also kinda a long story. I stream on twitch and started around 2020. Pretty small streamer so I interact with chat a lot and have some regulars I recognize. I had a Mod who was religiously involved in my chat for a while (to the point where I made him a mod) and he was very lovely perhaps just a bit insecure. He did SO MUCH for me, essentially oh my beck and call regarding stream related mechanics and discord and commands, setup, etc. Now there was another regular, R, in my chats who was very charismatic and funny and joined in on discord-video game group of me, my mod + three of my IRL college friends. We created group chats and got along really well. WELL. My mod confessed his love to me after discovering I had been casually dating someone in my real life. I considered us internet friends at that point but I was shocked because I’ve never met this man, didn’t know what he looked like, I just chatted with him for a couple hours while live each week and in group chats full of other people. He told me knowing I was seeing someone was crushing him and he needed to take a break from my streams. However he came back after three days saying it hurt more to be away. FLASH FORWARD, R (the other regular), who lives in New York announces in the group chat he’s coming to San Francisco , (close to where my IRL friends and I Live at the time) and my mod decides to drive 7 hours up from SoCal to SF so we can get the group chat together IRL and finally meet one another.
Now at this point I had been dumped and I knew my mod was probably still in love with me but the concept was so foreign I was just like nah this will be fun no drama….. then I meet them and realize R was exactly my type and I immediately developed an overnight crush on him… our relationship was strictly platonic (and… ONLINE.) and I again I had never met him and didn’t know what he looked like. The plot thickens as on the trip my mod seems to be avoiding me and I’m trying to NOT obviously flirt with R bc goddamn this is a very messy situation. On the last day of the trip I hug them goodbye and my mod says to me… “we need to talk. “ I’m a tone that honestly made me kinda anxious. The next couple days I start texting R nonstop and having such fun and genuine conversation while simultaneously trying to deal with the guilt of hurting my mod. mod and I never end up having another phone call and instead he DMS on discord, doubling down on his confession but this time with the “I thought I had feelings for “my screen name” but now I’ve met you I know my feelings are real and they’re for “my real name” now”
… the trip was TWO DAYS LONG. And he spent the whole time on the opposite of the group as me 😭😭😭.
Well. This got super long so I’ll cut it off there but I started seriously dating R, and there was a fallout between him and my mod (duh). At one point he snapped at me in chat while streaming and said some really uncalled for and rude things for the first time ever… but after that mod began to disappear after things got awkward and recently completely disappeared from my chats all together after about a year and a half. R and I have been in a great relationship for almost 2 years and he’s planning to move to California at the end of next year… 😅

“It’s just feet and who cares?” That’s exactly how I feel and why selling foot pics is always my final backup plan. I get it if the idea makes someone feel uncomfortable themselves, but I posted one picture of my feet in sandals when I went to a very clear lake (I live in an area where you can’t drive five miles without seeing a body of water, but a lot of them are more murky) and I was like “I’m uncomfortable posting my face on my photography account, but the way the water plays with the lighting on my feet looks kinda cute, I could use this as a self portrait that I AM comfortable posting” (I think my toenails might have been painted too. I haven’t looked at the picture in awhile) and then someone posted in the comments “cute feet” and I was like “damn. I shoulda been charging for these” (as opposed to my reaction when people say that to pictures of my face, which makes me slightly uncomfortable).
I’d probably already be asking for money for foot pics tbh but I’m not sure how you would even sell that and without shoes it’s really obvious how asymmetrical my feet are 😅 (I have a tendency to lean on one foot when I’m just standing somewhere and also would do that yoga pose I forgot the name of while brushing my teeth for a few years but I would always get too unbalanced to focus on brushing my teeth when not using my dominant foot, these resulted in only one foot getting the weird bump on the side that my dad’s feet have).
But yeah, one guy commented “cute feet” and I was like “I could make money off of that”

Imagine not being able to pick up on social cues. Super cringe! Who would do that?! (I'm not good with social cues)
After my training (retail), I got a job at this junk shop, and they had about everything. And I was told to hang up clothes. I hadn't worked with clothes before, only with groceries. So I hung up everything. Then the mother of the owner came around (at that time, I didn't know who that was), and she asked who would hang up all of the clothes. I told her that was me. And she berated me for it. The person who told me to do that apologized. She should have told me that I was only meant to hang up a few pieces.
Then New Year came around, and one had to watch the fireworks. I didn't have that at the store I worked before, so I wasn't exactly sure what to do. I was working in the area, keeping an eye out. And the Owner's mother came again, asking what I was doing and why I wasn't watching the fireworks. If I didn't know how to do that. And I told her, No, we didn't have that at my training.
She then goes to the manager and complains about me, that I wasn't supposed to talk about my training.
After New Year, I was immediately fired because, suddenly, they didn't have enough money.
After this job, I had no luck finding one for 8 months. I got a job interview 5 months after I sent out my application. When I arrived 10 minutes early for the interview (the way was pretty long, and I never had been in this store, so I got up early for it), I got yelled at. The Interview was on time X. I mean, I just wanted to let them know I was there, they could have come later. I was immediately asked how many sick days I had in my previous job. They wanted me to work there for a week to see how well I fit in (without payment). The first day was so horrible that I cried on my way back home. They gave me three containers with groceries and told me to fill them up. I asked them one time, when my shift ends, and they said, when I'm done with my work. I was there for 7ish hours already. Then, the owner's son came up when I was halfway through the second container and asked me why I wasn't faster. Uhm, because I don't know where everything is? Next to that, I was also supposed to fill up the fruit department. I was close to 9 hours there in total. And after 8 months of unemployment, that was hard. At the end of my shift, when I brought the containers back, the son asked me if I had done it correctly and in the end, he said he better control it himself.
I knew I didn't want to work there, but I was like 20 and very shy, so I didn't have the courage to tell them that I didn't want to work there. The next day, the boss called me in and told me, "I'm not what he expected" I still wish I had retorted with something witty at that moment, but I just left.

Fun work story. I worked at a call center, helping customers with computer problems for an internet cable company. We were not allowed to be late. If you were late, you got written up. 3 write ups and you're fired.
I had to go by train and at times the train was just late. But i couldn't risk being late for work, so i always left home an hour early. So I was either 45 minutes early.. or exactly in time if trains were running late.
One day, There was a train on fire and there were no trains going to the city i had to work. It was absolutely crazy. I called in immediately (1.5 hour before the start of my shift). Got alternative transport and after all the mess i was 3 minutes late.

Tip for anyone getting into the workforce: If a job is always hiring, there is a good chance they have a high turnover rate & have people who quit due to poor treatment. The only time I have seen a place that is always hiring & it wasn't due to people constantly leaving them is if they have a lot of options for people to move up into a higher position or into a different department but even take that as a grain of salt but it could be a combination of both. Also I despise how the US (or any county with this sentiment) treats accommodations for those with disabilities. They have this weird double edged sword of either you get on a program that limits the hours you can work but tends to not pay you enough to make ends meat on your own especially if your under 65 years old or you work as if you're an able-bodied person while fighting for basic accommodations. I get that someone people actually can't live on their own but it always irritates me when someone treats someone with disabilities coming into work 40 hours a week despite their disabilities as inspiration. They're there because they have no choose & while I understand that some people would still choose to work full time despite their disabilities but that's something that should be something they choose to do not force to do to make ends meat. Sometimes people can't work & they shouldn't have put their health at risk or make their medical issues worse because they're force to pretend to be something they're not. At the end of the day a person's disabilities don't define them or their limits but knowing ones limits & not having to push past them on a daily bases is so much better for their well-being

Oh God I wish I would have heard about dis prompt. So being autistic trans n in an interracial queer relationship (I suppose soon well b straight passin, since I've been on T 4 a yr n half) in da Midwest I get bullied at every single job I have. N I know dat coupled wit cptsd, I will last 6 months max, I think a yr is da longest I held out. 3 months average. But hands down da worst experience I had was a cleanin job my partner got through her brother after he worked a couple yrs n showed he was an exemplary worker. (He would later quit after us cause da racism got 2 him). My partner got me in da same way. So side note, I have autism. My horrible childhood had, a silver lining if u will, taught me how 2 usually tell wen ppl were bein fake nice wit me, but im autistic n still not perfect at it. Anywho 1st day, my boss is showin me around n how 2 do my job. We're havin good banter, n she's seems like she's genuinely tryna 2 connect 2 me n 2 she's has a base level of intelligence. My 2 criteria 4 comin out as non binary 2 ppl n asking dem 2 use my preferred pronouns. (Side note: at dis time I was identifyin as non binary, 4 reasons I now identify as a trans man. Both were true at da times I was identifyin as dem as I said 4 reasons). Here in da Midwest, especially wis Midwest ders a shit ton of brain dead caveman lvl of dumb ppl here, dat in my opinion r incapable of understandin da meanin of non binary. So even though she/her is n has been 4 a very very very long time, feelt like a knife stab ever time used in reference 2 me, I will just accept it until my brain snaps n it just sputters out loudly lol. Dats y unless dese 2 criteria r met I usually didn't come out. Anywho dey seemed 2 b. Long story short, she went 2 my bro in law n mentioned it n asked about it, my bro in law was confused n thought she was talking about my partner (cause of private medical info bout my partner da way she asked bout it, da confusion was valid). Which den led 2 my boss (a female 4 context), comin 2 work da next day n proceeded to ask me what was in my pants n den ask what was in my partners pants. As an autistic, I use blueprints, if u will, for speech. What 2 answer in any given situation. But who in der right mind expects 2 have der boss ask bout what junk dey have. I don't remember what I said but it wasn't great n my partner wasn't happy wit me. Her tellin me I shouldn't have said anything wasn't wrong, we live in da Midwest, she wasn't bein cruel, she was bein practically n dis brought her private medical info 2 light, so I understand. I just wanted 2 have a situation, a job, dat is always a high stress situation, 2 b less stressful by not bein misgendered. Is dat so wrong? 😭😭😭

      2 notes
Note 1 : since she was a female boss n even though I presented very masc in dress n hair cause of my large chest, I was assumed 2 b female, I assumed a court around here wouldn't do shit if I tried 2 file a sexual assault lawsuit.
Note 2 : pertinent 2 every thing said above includin note 1. I say da Midwest, especially wis, especially Madison ( I'd say Milwaukee is probably slightly better n da small towns significantly worse) is socially in da 1980s. I wanted 2 show an example. I had a packin job dat was oh bout a decade ago. Da lunch room was separated by race, literally it looked like da 1960s. It wasn't policy, da white ppl didn't want 2 sit by da black ppl. N da black ppl didn't trust 2 sit by da white ppl, n didn't trust or like other black ppl dat sat by da white ppl. My partner got shit 4 hangin round me. Her bein black n me bein white. We tried 2 avoid da lunch room. But wen we did wether it was da both of us or just me, we sat in da "black ppl area". Hate me 4 sayin but cause racism is so rampant here, n it's da veiled racism (u know smile 2 a black person face n call dem da n word behind der back or say other racist shit behind der back), I usually prefer 2 be around black ppl if it's not integrated. I got shit 4 dat 2. N dis job der was a large amount of ppl dat many days, 2 my face n behind my back, would call me it. Thought datd give u a taste of what it's like 2 live in da hell hole dat is da Midwest

Regarding probation periods, I’m American, so of course this will be fucked up, but I felt compelled to complain about the following situation. I worked at a warehouse job, and while I was regular quickly, the vast majority of workers-doing the same job-were there for over a year and sometimes two, getting paid less with no sick or vacation time. I’m sure that’s extremely common here, unfortunately. Plus, there was definitely racism involved with that, so…yay? :/

@@resliward4562 also, $7.25 is the FEDERAL minimum wage in the US. So even though your state has more worker's rights, your state government could just as easily throw that protection out and drop it to federal minimum wage.
