Here's What's WRONG with the E39 | Supercharged BMW E39 LS3 Swap

  • The Supercharged BMW E39 LS3 Swap (say that 5 times fast) found its way back into the garage from some repairs after the First Drive video (link below). We discovered a small pool of oil accumulating under the E39 build after pushing it hard in the shakedown runs which prompted the quick action to address the culprit. On top of that, one of the drive wheels on the Supercharger belt failed and started expelling the grease that was supposed to be lubricating the sealed bearings. Both of these issues resulted in the E39 build being temporarily put out of commission.
    Luckily, we have addressed the issues and the E39 is back on the road in today's video. The oil was found to be leaking around the o-ring on the Crankshaft position sensor, and was dripping down the passenger side of the engine block. We addressed the leak by using GM Sealant (88864346) with a new sensor/o-ring and will be keeping an eye on the garage floor over the next few days to see if it comes back.
    As for the sealed bearing issue, MASSIVE shoutout to LSX Concepts for sending us a new drive wheel for the Supercharger FREE of charge! Definitely check them out (link below) if you're thinking about performing an LS Swap, they offer top notch bracketry and drive systems for your build and their customer service has been awesome. Full disclosure, we are not affiliated with LSX Concepts in any manner, we just happen to like their products. Anyways, we changed out the failed drive wheel and will also be monitoring how it holds up during the next phase of shakedown runs.

    Intro Video: • Introducing the E39 LS...
    In case you missed the introduction video (link above), this car used to be a 2000 BMW 540i with the stock 4.4L V8 M62 engine before the drivetrain was completely re-engineered. The heart of the E39 is now the 6.2L V8 LS3 Chevy engine that can also be found in the 5th gen Camaro SS and C6 Corvette. The engine was previously naturally aspirated, but it now breathes through GM's LSA Supercharger. The most important part of this Supercharger system is the "Killer Chiller" that cools the intake air well below ambient and is incorporated into the A/C for more effective heat transfer. With cooler, denser air going into the engine, the car can add more fuel and therefore create more power. Proper performance of the "Killer Chiller" will be critical once the E85 tune is added, but for now we're sticking with 93 octane as we work out any kinks.
    We have a TON of content planned for this car so definitely SUBSCRIBE so you can keep up with everything in store. Also, feel free to drop a comment down below if you have a question you'd like us to answer or have a video topic you want to see. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks Dylan, really appreciate the feedback! There's definitely room for improvement, but I'm happy with the progress that I've been making and really trying to focus on bringing value. I try to learn as much as I can from the bigger YT channels so that's an awesome compliment. I've got longterm goals, but for now I'm enjoying the process and having fun with these early videos. Thanks for stopping by!

    Can you tell me what you did to reduce wheel hop? My 540/6 has it bad if I start of quickly above 2K RPM.
    I have the M5 diff and the subframe stiffness.

    • @TireKickers
      @TireKickers  4 года назад

      Honestly, I think the reason we don't have wheel hop issues right now is because there's so much torque going to the rear wheels that we're just spinning the tires and painting stripes. We may run into wheel hop issues once we get stickier tires, but we want to make sure that everything is reinforced in the rear end at that time. I think you did the right thing with the M5 diff and stiffened subframe, what suspension/bushings are you running?

      @@TireKickers I've got H&R springs, koni's, Eibach sway bars w/poly bushings along with a 2 stage NOS progressive controller spraying 175hp of boost. Still has wheel hop without the juice.

      BMW Info dang sounds like you’ve done everything right. I’m honestly not sure what more you can do, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a solution out there! Just curious, are you running the stock M62 V8 with the NOS? Sounds like an animal
