Great video Imran, very informative as understanding the inner workings of diffs isn't simple. Look forward to the video covering this E39 is it looks like a belter.
Just completed wavetrac install in my supercharged 2000 M5 and I am totally impressed. Before in my car when I would launch off the line it would always kick the back end to the right side but now with the wavetrac it just goes straight. Another huge plus is the wavetrac diff is exactly 5.2 lbs lighter than the stock M5 diff . Taking 5 lbs of rotating mass out of the driveline is beneficial in so many ways.
Hey Imran, Ever thought of doing a reimagined project for older BMW's like what singers doing? e39 m5, e36 m3 would be a great platform to start with in my opinion...
My Australian E39 M5 is tuned by Evolve. The improvement to power steering is great. However as this video suggests, even with stock power the car would be enhanced with a better LSD than the factory option.
Amazing e39 m5, I am a big fan of the e39 haveing a 540 6 speed myself.. That was a very well made video to watch and just about to sit down and watch some more of them
It wasnt a stock diff in it as they pointed out it was an aftermarket diff but not a wave track. BMW LSD riffs are clutch type riffs that work much different than the one they pulled out which was not a clutch type and was close to the wave trac design already but without the wave trac part they showed that creates a better pre load than the other after market. Although he kept referring to it as OEM. I'd love to have one in my E46 M3 but cash is not there for it yet.
The wavetrac diff works out cheaper than the quaiffe ATB diff, they do need the output flanges to match which adds on another couple of hundered quid or so, depending on where you get it from. I'm in the same situation, got stock diff with 140k on it. No issues with it yet but I always hope it goes bad so I have the excuse to smash my piggy bank and go for the wavetrac! Total price is around £1500 for a full wavetrac setup depending where you buy from as opposed to around £1700 for the quaiffe. Not sure if a bearing rebuild kit is required for the wavetrac but I know it is definitely needed for the quaiffe which adds another £300 or so. I reckon a budget of around £2.5k max would be enough for a fully fitted swap (inc bearings if needed).
Great video Imran. Lovely example and thanks for sharing this with us For those who don’t yet know there will be an E39 M5 gathering at Caffeine & Machine, Warwickshire (UK) on 6th October 2019 from 9am. If you own an E39 M5 would be fantastic to see you there 👍🏽
I absolutely can’t wait to see the M5 vids - V8 muscle at its finest Diff upgrade for the OCD who are obsessed with there pride and joy even if it will never see a track I totally understand this upgrade
It’s like a retired boxing heavy weight who is still in mint condition but has nothing to prove to the new kids on the block doesn’t need to step in the ring no more it’s earned it’s place and respect 👏🏻
This is a torsen type diff, are these not less performance oriented then plate type diffs? The diff that was taken out of the car was not stock and was also a forsen type, so i would be interestinf to see what it would be like compared to the stock plate type diff.
As explained in the video, the car came fitted with an ADB torsen diff carrier and not the standard BMW clutch LSD.. Torsen diff behaved differently from clutch type LSD. It can go between 0-100% lock. And zero maintenance. The ADB diff has no pre load so when 1 side of the wheel is completely off the road, it becomes an open diff.. the wavetrac designed with a ramp to counter this... watch the explanation on the video again.
Would be nice to see that driven to its potential i didn't hear the revs go past 4 or 5k is it for sale? I have the 2002 model but i would like to see the difference with the Supercharger
Great video, love that E39 but just wondering are they the first model of Goodyear Eagle F1's tyres its running, surely they must be well outta date by now
@@EvolveAutomotive So slightly different question but is the car as playful at the rear when you want it to be as before compared with the old diff? Part of the character of the M5 is the playful rear as well as the amazing engine (your car is FAST!).
I have an e39 M5. In California. What would be my investment to get my M5 to be like the Imola Red one? Labor? Parts? Time? Are the parts available in the USA?
Nice video like always. Just a silly question, that 200mph mark that you want to break with the m5 F90. What could this M5 e39 reach if you guess? 160mph? Would love to see this brilliant m5 perform.
Ahh good to know. Quite honestly, your videos exposed me to wavetrac and I’m finding myself highly considering it on my next build. Thanks for the response!
We have another Wavetrac video on our F56 Cooper S if you haven’t seen it which also explains how the Diff works. Having seen the internals of the diff, I wouldn’t consider any other type of ATB diff. This is like buying the latest iPhone compared to the original iPhone. There’s no downsides it’s just a newer technology for better performance.
Evolve Automotive yeaa, learning how the wavetrac doesn’t suffer from losing traction during zero axle-load conditions is impressive despite being the helical type. I had an e92 m3 and really considered changing the diff but I didn’t much at the time. Would you recommend going up to the 4.10 ratio with the wavetrac in the e92 or would you leave the ratio unchanged?
Ratio is down to personal preference. Haven’t personally experienced one with a different ratio in but the theory says you want to make your gears as short as possible. No sense being geared to 200mph if you’re only ever going to do 150 for example. Obviously there is a loss of fuel efficiency as you’ll be doing higher RPM at cruising speed. But you’ll gain acceleration which can make a car feel like it has gained raw horsepower.
A. I wished I lived next door to you and shop. B. I wish I owned a 2020 bmw M5 competition pack... ahhh you can always dream Oh and not living in Australia would help also!
@Steven Ross-watt Yes of course, the stock e39m5 diff unit is a ZF clutch plated lsd with 25% lock and 110-130Nm preload. I hardly doubt there would be any noticeable difference in driving experience between a quaife unit and a wavetrac unit, considering the fact they are both ATB type and should work the same way in situations when both rear wheels have any traction ...
Evolve Automotive good choice, I run them on all my cars 👍🏼 you can change every part in the world but when push comes to shove there is only 1 thing in contact with the road

Can the standard cars diff be “welded”?
A welded diff isn’t really a good idea.

It was not. We did not know it had a non /M differential in it.
