I think a lot of people forget that some of us do things like this for fun and a challenge.... Added bonus for Marty ( and us ) is that he can earn a crust from the video ... of him and his mates having fun = ) As for the price... that`s entirely up to the owner and the eventual buyer.
@JohnSmith-ud9ex Yes thats true but after a while you do get sick of people taking advantage of your skills and generosity especially in cases like this where they turn around and sell the thing for big money they would have had no hope of getting if it weren't for the skills and generosity of others ( if I sound jaded its because I have been used in this way meany meany times over the last 40 years). I hope Marty here at least got some RUclips money from the vid especially since he went to the effort of making it for us to watch for free.
I`m in my 50`s... so jaded is a natural state. Thankfully I am, at last, learning not to waste energy on an insurmountable foe ( human nature in its natural state 99% of the time for 99% of people ). My comment was trying to be upbeat and appreciative of Marty. Besides, Marty`s comments on his second video regarding the state of the machine casts considerable doubt on the asking price and the owner has yet to find a buyer.... But you are right... unfortunately.@@-TheRealChris
Glad you guys were able to give him a hand. That driveway was washed out pretty bad. Probably best he keep ahold of it, since it's on the side of a hill and just a matter of time before it washes out again.
Thanks for keeping us updated Marty! Seriously these little clips are so nice, knowing you have pretty much zero obligation to make/post them but still keeping the fans in the loop! Really appreciate getting to watch you do this great work!
I luv the way all the crew came together to help the owner get his much needed dozer back up & running 👍🏽. Whoever was running the dozer made a great job of the road & for a tiered machine it done the job with ease. Thanks for the upload Marty, God bless you & your family (inc doggie, angry ram etc) not forgetting the crew 👍🏽🙏😁
This brings back memories of my pre-teen and teenage years watching a dozer being used to dig dams on the farms I grew up on. I am nearly 70 now and this is fantastic. Beautiful sound. As they say, "Work fascinates me; I can sit and watch it for hours".
I just love the videos of you taking something in this condition and tuning it up, cleaning and servicing. I’m amazed at how many times you have shown that something that was “ broken” was just dirty/rusty/low on fluids.
For a dozer that has been sitting for a few years and with water in one of the pots , the old girl isn’t chuffing out any soot when it’s loaded up . Just a good old honest Cat
fun fact, nz is very flat and boring, just a gigantic stage set for movie making.all the hills and mountains are papier mache. us kiwis work nights moving them around for tourists selfies.
For anybody considering buying this old Cat I wouldn't be concerned about the cylinder walls or ring seal, it fired up on all 4 from cold & didn't have one hanging or smoking & runs clean when up to temp. Marty's quick fix is basically the same way I fix these old track adjusters as well. I just do a clamp on style with a piece of pipe slit down the middle to go over the ram rod. These old D4's bring 6 to 10k any day of the week here in the US.
Exactly what I was thinking, it's the ideal machine for anybody like Marty with a bit of land, It wouldn't take long to earn your money back compared to hiring a machine in with trucking costs and a guy to run it if it's not self drive hire. Then when it pukes beyond economic repair weigh it in if scraps worth anything on an island like NZ, or part it out for what you can get out of it. I did the same thing here in Canada with my backhoe loader, I paid about 8K for it by the time I fixed it, earned all the money back the first year over hire costs, still own it, and might not use it for a year or do 5 things in a week with it. I've got a guy offered 10K for it, as it's the same machine he grew up running for his dad in the 80's. But I've got the same type of history to family ones in the UK like he does, so it's not for sale anyway.
it starts so good for a machine with that kind of hrs and water being in the cylinders for who knows how long glad to see another machine is up and running and not going to the scrap yard
Interesting comments about "hope youre getting paid" for resurrecting the machine.. a lot of the time down here, people do this for the love, cost of materials only (if that in some cases), just helping someone else out.. as for what its worth to sell? well, its worth what someone will pay ;) looks like a solid rig (performs well it seems) tho, some good bones. love your (guys) work, MartyT! 👌
I thought you guys did a remarkable job getting it going. Well done, I really enjoyed watching it come to life. You all worked so hard. Hugh. Somerset UK
Well, Marty being a good mate he helped out a fellow New Zeelander and hot that Cat back to work. Several more days work and the owner will have a nice inproved road leading down to his property. Then sell or do improvements to the property itself. Definitely was a joy watching the old Cat working.
I thought originally this dozer may be heading home with you Marty. 😁 As for the footage of it in action, I thought you did an excellent job showing us the dozer in action in the first video. It is always a treat to see what Marty brings back from the dead! Keep up the great work Marty!
I agree it was a GREAT save, mainly because of the precarious position it was in. Personally, I think the TD9 save was the epic one, due to locale, & duration of time in the bush. To me, it doesn't matter that no one of the group buys/keeps it, it was an excellent chance for the guys to get out & see if they could do it; and with this group there wasn't a doubt in my mind. Running a 6-B at a DuPont plant pushing mud and the tracks were LOOSE! I told them it was going to sling one if they didn't do something. They said to run oit. It may be fine for pushing a bit of dirt around on a flat piece of land, also where you could get to it if it tosses a track or blows a hose. To make it reliable enough to make do in the bush it is going to take quite a bit of work. Even if it was gifted to you with an understanding that you would take care of the maintenance as long as the original owner could call on it a few times a year, it would be a bit of a burden. You would end up spending thousands and more than a few weeks of wrenching and cursing over broken knuckles. Already having your own you were a good mate to help someone else out.
I’ll bet he was thrilled to get that going again. His wife probably told him he had to put it up for sale, so he picked a price that wouldn’t hurt if it did sell. ;-)
Thank you for the up date on the D4d , 10k is a bit stiff considering it's condition, a undercarriage will cost half that ,at least it's usable for now

Machine looks like it’s got some life left in it. Better to see it running at all than to be left to crumble into scale. Several of the drone shots of the dozer show the actual slope on the land really well.
What you guys did was amazing. Isn't it funny how the owner reacted when that dozer was on the side of the hill - he was happy to just know it was there & do nothing. You come a long with a few mates get it going. Now he wants 10k for it. (has he been drinking?). Should he get any amount of money that he should split (I think it was 4 of you + him) 5 ways.
It's a bit pricey, but as others have said, there's not a lot of fresh meat in the NZ market. It did seem to run well, didn't smoke and was pushing uphill.
There's surprisingly no smoke coming out of that stack while it's working, so I think y'all got really lucky with the water that was in that one cylinder...the tensioner repairs and track replacement required to keep it in service is a bit of a buzzkill, but to the right person that's a hell of a rig seeing as it seems to run really well and it has no trouble cutting and pushing...
Looks like it was an old logging dozer with that winch it would be very handy for the right person bit if TLC be a good machine Thanks for the videos mate 💯👍 Best thing ever was work it bet the owner appreciated you guys leveling what he couldn’t and doing his roadwork
Sitting on the hillside it's value was basically scrap. So if he wants $10,000 now that means you added $9,000 to its value by getting it going.
It's like $3k just in scrap.

Machine looks like it’s got some life left in it. Better to see it running at all than to be left to crumble into scale. Several of the drone shots of the dozer show the actual slope on the land really well.
Experienced Cat skinner there. Most new operators dig too hard but this guy was lifting a lot the time to create fill. Love seeing the old stuff work.
Bloody oath you blokes grow some great stones over the ditch! We grow spuds like that here in southern Tassy!😁
Water or not, engine seems to be running very well.
I recall you mentioning that it was a neighbour and just helping them out? at least that was my Mandela Effect !!
🇨🇦🤓🤙
What you guys did was amazing.
Isn't it funny how the owner reacted when that dozer was on the side of the hill - he was happy to just know it was there & do nothing.
You come a long with a few mates get it going. Now he wants 10k for it. (has he been drinking?). Should he get any amount of money that he should split (I think it was 4 of you + him) 5 ways.
I just discovered your channel. Thank you for for sharing. I'm learning loads. 👏 😁
And I can not even pay someone to look at my forklift.
Well done for helping this fella out it made it good content even if Cost you a 10mm
What this road needs is a few passes with your motor grader. You would set it right in a hurry Marty! 😊
Man that thing is an old work horse. Good job getting it going, y’all got some skills for sure.
It's a bit pricey, but as others have said, there's not a lot of fresh meat in the NZ market. It did seem to run well, didn't smoke and was pushing uphill.
Yeah, but the undercarriage is shot. The owner was seemingly content to leave it on the hill forever. Even if it was 'free', I wouldn't touch it.
That dozer looks like she's enjoying the light load. Don't overwork her in her condition and she'll be fine in the pasture with new grass. ❤
It's always a good day when an old Cat. comes back to life. Great job Marty and thanks for sharing ,
just lost my dad, thanks for the therapy
The sound of this thing is kinda awesome. Brute force oldschool technology. 💪🏼
Tracks never come off in a convenient place unless you remove them yourself for service. I’ve learned that the hard way…
No Smoke, a working machine that is due for TLC. Thanks for sharing. Ron PTL USA
10k no way more like 5 after all the work you guys did to get it going for the owner.
That's how you tell he really doesn't want to sell it.
Looks like it was an old logging dozer with that winch it would be very handy for the right person bit if TLC be a good machine
Thanks for the videos mate 💯👍
Best thing ever was work it bet the owner appreciated you guys leveling what he couldn’t and doing his roadwork
For a rusty looking old piece of scrap it sure sounds great and works well.
Just amazing that it can be sat idle/broken for so many years, then burst back into life like that, especially so out of shape.
A Marty T video is my heart smart dessert after dinner tonight!
One graded driveway plus reconditioning the old cat equals 10K easily. Great work.
