6.4L vs 6.7L Powerstroke: Which One is Better?

Overall, both engines have a lot of potential when modified correctly, however, the 6.4L is plagued with various issues that can lead to catastrophic failure. At the end of the day, the 6.4L is one of the most diesel engines ever used in a modern diesel truck, solely because it’s a pain to work on and its really designed as a throwaway engine.
The 6.7 was designed in-house by Ford since they got sick of all the issues caused by Navistar’s design choices on the 6.0L and the 6.4L. I think it’s pretty safe to say the 6.7L is undoubtably better than 6.4L in almost every way. It makes more power in stock form, it’s more efficient, its lighter, its quieter, and its way more reliable.

Once deleted and studs installed the 6.4 was a monster with the tunes available during its time. Innovative offered a tune that was good for nearly 350HP over stock on tune alone. I would see 58 PSI of boost. No tuned diesel since has impressed me as the 6.4. Most of course is due to not being able to delete plus tune due to our wonderful EPA. I'm truly glad I got to experience such raw torque before the EPA crashed and burned deleting diesels. No fuel additives or regen. 0-80 mph it was quite a ride. Miss that truck. 6.4 is just a punched out 6.0 with common rail system, same head bolt issues from the 6.0, just takes more power to find out about it, but the fuel system is capable of flowing so much it can easily destroy itself, so 6.7 is the only choice in this comparison

I'm pretty sure those old enough to remember will wholeheartedly agree with you on that, hands down. In fact, it can be argued that that was easily GM's biggest monumental failure of the late '70s and early to mid '80s. It is also probably what leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth about anything with a diesel being released by GM. Literally everything from lacking a water separator, to weak head gaskets to failing injection pumps and the list goes on plagued that engine. I remembered many of the cars equipped with that engine being sent to the scrapyard very early in it's life due their failures and maybe a few extending their life not by much with hack job gas engine transplants.

I had a 6.0 liter F.O.R.D., if I pulled a trailer, the 4 bolts around each cylinder ( should be SIX) would allow the head gaskets to leak. This put 2,000 psi power pluses into the coolant. The radiator cap would TRY to release the over pressure ( 16 psi cap). That pressure would go to the plastic bottle and blow antifreeze on the window & the cars windows around me.
Called a tow truck to haul to Ford dealer (still under warranty) the FORD tech. said everything is fine. No problem.
Ford refused to replace headgaskets. The next day, towing a trailer, the coolant pressured up and exploded the E.G.R. cooler. This time I did NOT call a tow truck. I drove the P.O.S. home. The 6.4 if you delete emissions and maintained them correctly and didn’t tune them heavy where dependable they just where horrible on fuel economy the 6.7 is great on fuel with the same power of the 6.4 and less maintenance issues if you want to delete emissions and hold up better with high tunes due to the torqshift 6 speed from 2012 and up that literally is the f750 commercial truck transmission.... I’ve had Cummins duramax and powerstrokes the new ones are all tit for tat but the more refined one nowdays is the ford as far as good all the way around on power fuel efficiency power distribution/ turbo lag ...cab and chassis/suspension quality

Also as far as lasting forever no body is buying these trucks to last for 20 years nowdays you will trade it in if your buying a $80k truck you most likely will be able to afford to get a new one and if not the 6.7 power stroke right now on fleets locally are at 375.000 and nothing significantly replaced mechanically, same as the duramax work trucks and the Cummins all the new trucks last If not abused

I've got an 08 (Job 1) 6.4 which is completely stock and has always had all scheduled maintenance/service done religiously. Yet it still has been plagued with problems, all being engine related.
Leaking radiator (replaced), leaking head gasket causing over-pressurizing of coolant system (cab removal repair), oil leak at bedplate (cab removal & engine removal repair), HP fuel pump failure (cab removal replacement), exhaust temp sensor failed (1 failed but replaced all 3) including a new DPF, exhaust temp sensor failed on up pipe (replaced). All instances, except radiator and oil leak, took several trips to dealership service dept. in order to diagnose because no codes were initially stored and it only gave us problems when under load while towing our RV. At these times we would experience reduced power (limp mode) and/or blowing white smoke, both of which would temporarily go away after doing a shutoff/restart. Fortunately all covered under extended Premium Care warranty, which I've renewed twice because of trucks history, at $3200 a pop. Switching to a 2021 6.7 when current warranty expires the end of next year. The 6.4 was a disaster as was the 6.0. Ford Motor Company did the right thing by ending their relationship with Navistar. So far,, I have heard/read nothing but positives about the 6.7 since its rollout in 2011, both privately owned and with fleet trucks.

There seems to be one key point missing here. Ford was responsible for the majority of the problems with the 6.4L Powerstroke. Ford was already planning their own engine, and the 6.4L was their experiment into making a diesel engine run. The 6.4L wasn't the last straw. The 6.0L was, and Navistar already knew it was at the end. The 7.3L and 6.0L Powerstrokes were essentially the same engines Navistar put in International trucks, just a different color of paint. Ford bought a cheapened version of the 6.4L longblock from Navistar. The turbochargers, fuel system, EGR, DOC, DPF, etc. were all Ford's own doing. I'm not saying that the 6.4L used in International trucks wasn't a piece of shit in its own right, but you can't blame Navistar for how bad it was in Ford trucks. Knowing Ford was soon to be gone, Navistar came up with the TerraStar truck, equivalent to the F450 and F550, in an effort to recover some of the market for their V8 engine as a justification for continuing to produce it. Obviously that worked well, given that the V8 is long gone, the Indianapolis Engine Plant and Indianapolis Casting Corporation have been leveled, and that class of International truck is now a rebadged Chevy.

As issues that plauged the 6L power-stroke really strained ford and Navistar's relationship when after the 6.4 power-stroke's production run ended had the pair end their relationship when ford took lessons from the three decades of engines built first by international harvester and later Navistar to develop an entirely new engine to meet current and future emissions standards when ford came out with the 6.7 power-stroke.

6.7 is better than 7.3 it’s way more reliable than the 7.3 don’t get wrong the 7.3 will last but it’s not more reliable than the 6.7 for shit

@@raptordan6851 how do you go on your 3 turbo tho my dad has a company and I work for him and like the only problem we’ve ever had on one of his 6.7s was a turbo leak but we didn’t have to replace the turbo we just had to fix one of the pipes or whatever and the one I drive was just the DEF but once you take that off it’s gonna run good as new it’ll be able to breathe much better DEF is a regular problem that’s gonna happen to anyone wether you drive a durmax or Cummins you know but if you don’t get rid of that def it’s gonna mess up the engine more so that could be why you’re on your 3 turbo too

@@raptordan6851 and the 7.3s we’ve had have lasted forever too one of them is about to hit 500k miles the other 7.3s we sent to our ranch in Mexico with new tires and stuff those had around the same amount of miles and they’ve gone through beatings I’m talking about 20k pounds on a daily, and we’ve also used Cummins but the problem with them is the transmission even if you get a stick they’ll fuck up

@@HSSANITO I’m deleting my 14 f450 here in the next couple weeks , it’s still a solid truck , as for my 2017 f350 platinum the original turbo went at 10,000 miles full on limp mode. The last time was at 30,000 miles, one day just started barking with erratic boost and squealing, I’ve got 45,000 miles on it now and who knows how long it will last , I asked the local dealer if it was just my bad luck lol , dealer said they change them all the time primarily 16-18.

6.4 is disposable. Rods and wrist pins missing bushings. Built to save money. Take very good care of it and do not tune it and it will be okay. The engine is virtually non rebuildable once it goes. Yes they're exceptions but it's a disposable engine

“Throw away engine”: an engine designed to last until the end of the power train warranty to limit warranty costs.
The 6.4 was designed to be a throw away engine and it wasn’t even a good throw away engine
