@@MansBestFriend_ the PS5's backwards compatibility is not perfect and has many glitches in quite a few titles - usually to do with textures and excessive pop-in - even popular ones like Uncharted 4.
The PS3 was an extremely expensive piece of bespoke equipment back in 2007. I think thats why it still holds up today as an excellent device to have. It has a lot of functionality even as an offline device. I remember being disappointed with the PS4 when I got it, it just didnt feel as advanced/feature packed.
yup the PS3 was groundbreaking in terms of computing power at the time. Also compared to the 360 it had HDMI, Built in Wifi, Bluetooth controllers and support, and free online. Truly an amazing console for the time.
@@zacktyler2810 only the late model 360 consoles had built in wifi. All other 360 needed an external wifi adaptor module ($60 at the time) if you didn't want to use an ethernet cable.
PS3 still holds up well, and I have been playing quite a few games lately. I am glad I started collecting years ago for it. I like the red cases for my horror games, just seems to make them pop a bit.

I bought one with thirty games for $200 last month, a slim model. It's my first Sony console since the PS2 and it was basically a relaunch of PS3. Simple, sleek and elegant, with all the exclusive content, it's easy to see how Sony won back so many fans to finally eclipse the 360.
I strongly recommend the 1st-party games, by far the most impressive titles on the PS3. Some of the exclusives are quite good, but Sony, by far, got the most out of their own system with that generation.
I got this back in 2011, it still works perfectly, the controller that came with it that was used also works perfectly to this day, play on a near daily basis still to this day even though I have all the other Playstations now, my personal favorite console of all time
BC PS3s are just the best if you can get a reliable one. Three generations of PlayStation games in one box with one controller, all through HDMI and with usually-good deinterlacing for PS2 games, is just fantastic! Do be sure to jailbreak yours and install WebMan for auto fan control so that your PS3 can live a little longer (and a little louder...!)
I just picked up one too . I played it once and then changed the thermal paste . I wish I had a cmos battery at the time though . I kinda said fuck it though cuz I would have to rig it up, being it’s in that stupid setup. Mines a emulation backward one 80g 4 usb model . I bought it thinking it was a 60 gig og model . Still after opening it up. It was in Uber shape so Iam happy
@@slayerofsouls1182 The partial hardware BC models like what you've got have a much better implementation of the smoothing filter by the way. There's very little coverage of that fact, but after trying it out in person with an A01 vs E01 and watching the few comparison videos that are out there it's a night and day difference. It's a noticeable filter for sure, but it looks great on 3D titles. Both smoother AND sharper, not just a generic blur. So in my opinion you ended up with the better model. ;)
I bought my PS3 Slim a little over 2 years ago and paid around $80 for it. I currently have almost 60 games in my PS3 library that I paid $3-15 each. I looked up the going price for them last week and it's insane what some of these are going for. I'm never going to sell them. When I move into a bigger place I'll have more than 2 consoles hooked up so I can revisit them more. It irks me to no end that Sony doesn't implement backwards compatibility. Modders have proven its not difficult.
Yeah.. no.. LOL this ain't gonna happen xD Because these games rely EVEN MORE on the whole PSN / SEN Infrastructure than the PS3 games did. Which means you need to buy consoles with all game patches installed and backup'd because otherwise all of these games will be useless.
Just recently purchased a backwards compatible PS3 on eBay and been putting together a nice collection of PS2 and PS3 games. It’s so awesome to play games like Guitar Hero on PS3 and Champions of Norrath for PS2.
I've bought PS consoles from the very first. It's immensely disappointing to see their lack of respect for the games that not only made them as popular & wealthy as they are- but also the disrespect with the PSOne: Classic and their lack of investment to older titles. This is something that makes ZERO sense to me. They've made a pretty good PS1 emu on the PS3, they could get programmers on to help with one for the PS5 but they don't. They avoid selling these old games at all costs. So they're either afraid of someone seeing their state of the art machine playing something so 'ugly', or they're not interested in a small but constant revenue stream and just want big bucks especially with their bone-headed price increase in new titles. I got the PS3 when my PS2 was broken by someone careless, I was like- backward compatible? Play all my PS1 & 2 games that I still own? Sell the old consoles & some of the accessories to get more stuff for PS3? YEAH. I'm sat with a PS4 Slim, that's more than enough powerful to not only emulate- but UPSCALE these old PS1 & 2 games but- they don't. It's just irritating

So I get that I wish I got on better with Xbox, I tried with the 360 from the start and I had several redrings with the early models and gave up on that system. Heard the last revision is basically entirely different machine and won't have that issue but it was too late then. But now I hear the current Xbox Series X/S have always online DRM with all their games. So, I'm extra turned away now. All the systems have issues. Even Switch. Want to back up your game saves? Gotta pay for it- when everyone else has a free option.
@@Snotnarok I went way back to the first Xbox. But even that has a problem of literally self destructing because of its cheap internal clock capacitor leaking corrosive liquid on the motherboard.
@@Snotnarok Every model before V 1.6. Didn't read any real major problems with the last revisions. It's an incredibly major problem but apparently not something very many xbox owners know about considering I haven't heard about it until just last week. I guess people just think they aren't built to last 10 years and don't look more into it.
The PS3 is a great system to start on if you want cheap gaming for a great price. I love using it as a media player for my music CD's. The only downfall of the media functionality is that Sony stopped supporting automatically finding the CD info whenever you connect to the internet, which means you have to manually type out the album title and song names.
Wait, that ran through a Sony Server too? Damn..... i hope there's a way to change it to a free CDDB url, with a Custom Firmware. So that audio CDs will get properly detected again.
This is what I did to my ps3 during quarantine. Jailbroke my ps3, borrowed my friends and family's games I didn't have and ripped them all using multiman and loaded them all on HDD.
I won a ps3 super slim on ebay and it comes with 18 games and all the cords and 1 controller. It said the system was tested and it works. Cant wait to get it to replace my ps3 super slim I bought back in 2014 that took a dump on me. I wish knew more about taking them apart and fixing them. Great videos.
Funfact: the moment everyone talks about the PS3 prices. On the PS4 there are ALOT of great Games cheap to get. Im not really a Sony Collector and buy only Games i want to play, but i have now over 70 PS4 Games in my "not collection" physical and most of them only costs me 5-10€. And yes there are Games included like Dark Souls 3. God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Shovel Knight, Bloodborne ect. And noone told me to do this. For PS3 i buy only Games that are exclusive and interessting. Not every crap that was released, just to try making a "full set" and wasting space on the shelfs

I Absolutely love Playstation 3. I've had fond memories of Playing Awesome games like Ratchet and Clank games, Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham city , Transformers fall of Cybertron, I could go on and on about how many great games that we've had in that era. I still play the Ps3 and the graphics still holds up to this day. It's a must get for sure :)
I agree. As for me though I grew up playing PlayStation 2 But PlayStation 3 was more of a upgraded version of Ps2. Jak & Daxter was favorite game for the console.

You think Xbox One/Series consoles' 40 backwards compatible original Xbox games out of a library of 1000 is enough to satisfy people? 360 backcompat list isn't that big either it is mostly the popular and mainstream games that get added. Fat PS3 at least covers the entire PS1 and PS2 library since it is hardware emulation.

@@retrocratictv275 I’m pretty sure physical games on the PS3 will work without servers running with a dead CMOS battery. Digital games will be the issue. It’s the PS4 that all games digital and physical won’t work with servers down and dead CMOS battery.
Had an OG PS3 back in the day. Sold 5 older systems back then to buy it. Ended up selling it to help me get an XBOX ONE. Now, that things are different, I have gone back to retro gaming and have bought 2 PS3's and am working on a library that is already at about 30 games.
Indeed, I bought most of my PS2 and PS3 games at the end of 2019 and they've only been getting more expensive ever since. Crazy! The pandemic surely hasn't helped since more people are bored at home wanting to collect things.
So when it comes to manuals and ps3 games, you’ll see a 50-50, I believe it was towards its mid life cycle when they started to cut back on manuals and even having colorless inserts saying you can look at a digital manual, personally I think it was to cut costs as the digital era also played a part in helping it not exist any more. It makes me sad.
I remember when I bought my PS3 back in Ireland shortly after it came out. I registered online and sony actually sent me a blu-ray of Casino Royale. Don't know if I won it in a lottery or something but it was nice of them. Super cool and I still have it to this day.

@@jakehunter3434 yeah its most obvious in 2 and 3. Take a close look during cutscenes after you’ve upgraded the armor once or twice. It never properly rests on his head and you can see his brown cap while in the originals that was not the case. Will you be picking up Rift Apart this month?
Good pick up. I still have my PS3 and love the backwards compatibility. I love going back and playing older games I still have especially ps1 & ps2 games. I had it set up but I recently moved and had to put it back in its box.
The PS3 is my favorite system to collect for. I have a full US set, and sitting currently at 1601 PS3 games, with a full Greatest Hits set as well. It looks nice all together on 1 shelf, but split from the main collection. The PS3 certainly is notorious for all of its spine differences: You have the initial design (used from 2006-end of 2009) with the red PS3 logo at the top of the spine. The redesign logo (first used in October of 2009) where its the black PS3 logo at the top of the spine. Then you have Greatest Hits games. Also the 14 Blue Label games (released from February 2014 - June 2014). And if you collect the ESRB games from Latin America, you have the Favoritos lineup (Latin America's Greatest Hits equivalent) which have Gold Spines, and you have the Digitales Lineup (digital codes in a case), which have Silver Spines. A ton of diversity in the PS3 library, but it is super fun to discover and collect everything!!
@@Ozzyozzysheesh mostly 3 bookshelves I got from Target. They fit games 2 deep, so I put all the shovelware/sport games in the back, that way more notable, rare, and valuable games are at the front. I have the rarest and most valuable games on the top shelf, all in box protectors.
@@mvsdo1995 search “blue label PS3 games” on Google. Keep in mind only US versions of those games have the blue label. Personally the only one I have is Drakengard 3 as it didn’t get a disc release at all in Europe.
I also started collecting physical PS3 games after the whole PSN freak out! So many great games, my wife already owned the FF Lightning Trilogy with the last two games in steel books so that's pretty cool
PS3 was the console that did the major breakthrough in gaming. It introduced bluray, hdmi and (especially towards the end of its generation) the 3D games as we've come to know them in recent years. For me, more or less, PS4 is a PS3 in 1080p and PS5 in 4K. Ok screen analysis is important of course, but PS3 has it all on 720p. Monster games like the last of us, GTA V, skyrim, red dead redemption, uncharted 1,2,3, all kind of games like crysis, far cry, metal gear, fallout, COD, fifa, pro, nba 2K, you name it. Plus the move technology and games like just dance, resident evil, tennis but also countless sport games that take advantage of it. Amazing console. Mine was destroyed from excessive gaming and I bought another one in order to continue playing my huge backlog of games (that need two lifetimes to complete).
Or you could just get a slim, put custom firmware (CFW) on it and play every single PS2 game ever made on it. A modded slim is way better than any other PS3. The original PS3 is not as capable of playing PS2 games as a slim with CFW.
@@nissan_6828 All you have to do is convert ANY PS2 game that doesn't work into a PSN .PKG file, and it works. Yes, every single game. Yes, some do not work as an .iso file, converting them to a PSN .pkg file solves that issue. I have done it with literally every PS2 game that allegedly didn't work.

I know how to do it and some games require configs etc, i own a BC PS3 and i don’t need to do all of that but tbh, it ain’t worth buying a BC one. if you’re planning on playing solely ps2 games, buy a ps2
PS3 stands next to the gamecube as my favorite console of all time. Too bad that similar to Nintendo's treatment of gamecube, Sony doesnt seem to care about this system and many of the gems on this system are stuck there with no future. Really hope emulation is drastically improved for PS3.
I loved the ps3, some of the exclusive games were brilliant and are with my all time favourites. Mine broke but I want another. They sell them in pawnshops here in the uk for around £50/60 and the games are like £3-5 each 👍
I'd been wanting to collect the exclusive RPG's that are on the PS3. So, I had been buying more PS3 exclusive RPG's fairly recently, as well as anything else I wanna play or other RPG's I see for cheap. Within the past few months, I have acquired black label Ni No Kuni, Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII, Darksiders II, NieR, Drakengard 3, Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Neptunia Victory, a sealed copy of Persona 5, the limited edition of Mugen Souls, and The Guided Fate Paradox with its soundtrack. Although, I recently acquired The Witch and The Hundred Knight with its soundtrack, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Time and Eternity. Mainly collecting the RPG's because those games tend to go up in value the most, alongside horror. That being said, I've also bought Split/Second, Silent Hill HD Collection, Xblaze Lost Memories, Batman Arkham Origins, and LittleBigPlanet as well.

If you haven't already, see if you can track down The Awakened Fate Ultimatum, which follows the story of The Guided Fate Paradox. Combined, I have quite a lot of RPGs for other consoles. I will have to look into getting The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. I've been wanting to try out The Guided Fate Paradox for awhile anyways, so if I enjoy it, that will really motivate me to try and get my hands on the sequel. As for the Neptunia games, I already owned the first one on PS3, I just needed the other two.
Don't call old school games retro, here is why: Retro describes something relatively new (a product, style) that imitates that of the past. Retro is not original but is inspired to appear like the original. Vintage refers to something original, aged between 20-100 years, is rarer and therefore has more value than its retro counterpart.
I was so glad that the PS3 store stayed open when they were going to shut it down! I’ve been playing my PS3 on and off over the years but not long before the announcement of the store closing I had bought a bunch of PS1 classics like Silent Hill and the original Resident Evil games (1-3). It just sucks that it’ll still get shut down soon enough. The PS3 is still a great console that warms my heart when I see the layout and floaty background :)
Put a SSD in it. It'll fix quite a few of it's issues. It'll improve texture streaming for quite few of its game. Like Rage and all Unreal Engine 3 games. It'll fix Arkham Origins awful texture streaming and asset popin. I'd reccomend either a Crucial MX500 or a Samsung 860 Evo. The 1TB models are very affordable now. With inbuilt Cache for smaller files. Samsung 860 Evo 1TB is the one to get.
@@18837ven Yeah! It's not gonna fix every issue. But using one will improve the stability of the system and games. It won't improve CPU related fps drops, but will make sure the fps doesn't drop when it comes to texture,asset and world related stream fps drops. Games will feel more stable because of it. Also textures will load way faster. I think the highest SSD you can use is like 1.75TB. But people never talk about trying a bigger size in a PS3 Super Slim. PS3 Super Slim has a few SATA related improvements over the other PS3 systems.
@@18837ven You want to see examples of this. Look up Rage PS3 SSD Digital Foundry or Skyrim PS3 SSD Digital Foundry. They had a look years back. SSD's have vastly improved since then, so you get even more benefits from one as they have inbuilt Cache these days to remember smaller files.
I didn't have any plans at first to grab some PS3 games, but this video reminded me of some games I wanted to grab when the PS3 was out, and I didn't have one. I'll probably head to my local cartridges galore store and see what they have.
I would love to keep my PS3 running forever. As it is now, within minutes the fan kicks on and runs at ludicrous speed. I swapped the power block (I forget what its called) inside to the cooler one and put fresh thermal paste on the 2 plates (forget what they're called too). Still runs very hot. I'm afraid to play it and cook it. What can I do?
Both the cell and the rsx have thermal paste under the headspreader. U have to take both of these of and put new on it, but be careful about it. You can easily do damage. Buy a ylod ps3 and try it first with this system.
If it is regular FAT model (non backwards compatible), just find some video how to delid PS3 and try it. If you kill it, just buy slim, they cost peanuts. If it is BC model, be way more careful so you do not kill it. BC models are, and will be sought after
There are several PS3 games with no manuals. I feel bad for the eBay sellers who point out ‘no manual’ for games that never had them anyway and it makes it sound not complete.
I still remember when I opened the very 1st playstation. Got the 2nd and 3rd then just took a break.. became a dad 😅 gave away 1st and 2nd but kept 3rd. Bought 4th few years back..(for my kids)and Last year purchased ps5. Yesterday when I was bringing out the Christmas decor I found my ps3. I'm planning to have a set up with the last 3 generations.. ps3, 4, and 5, by the end of the week in the man cave..too bad my kids will enjoy, not me🤣. Wish I kept them all.
I recently imported a White PS3 160gb slim from Japan. It is complete in box, and in amazing shape. Mostly bought to be able to play Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Which I did end up buying the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection. Before that I ended up buying like 15 games and a USA Black slim ps3 for 50 bucks from a neighbor, but that PS3 died. But it was still a good haul due to the value of the games I got in it. So when i was looking to buy another PS3, i decided to take a chance at importing one from Japan, since they apparently take very good care of their things. So if you can't find any good PS3s around, don't be affraid to import a Japanese version. The only 2 caveats with a Japanese Imported PS3 are the fact that it will not play NTSC-U PS1 games due to region lock, and X and Circle are switched functionality in the menus. Other than that, it perfectly plays US PS3 games. And yes, the menus and all are in which ever language you choose, so it is all in English for me. Thank you Sony for making us collectors out there have to go out and find some working PS3's, since you want to forger about it. But love your content man, let's keep this retro video game collecting GOING!
I wish I could turn the clock back to the PS-2 and PS-3 days….the world was so so so much better and more fun….literally use to have all nighters playing Tiger woods golf in 2003-2006….it was still fun even playing alone after that….miss those years
I skipped the PS3 generation and bought one almost 2 years ago to play the games I missed out on, I bought a bunch of games for it and I’m glad I did cause these prices are crazy now lol.
I've had a brand new PS3 sitting in my closet since around 2010. I had thought of building a dedicated Mortal Kombat cabinet based around it, but that never happened. So it sat there unopened for more than a decade. I've recently finally unboxed it and set it up because I wanna play the Last of Us (due to having watched the series on HBO Max).
Bought my backwards compatible ps3 last year and I've been collecting games even rare games that are hard to find as well. Some of the rare games are brand new and I'm not opening them lol.
My ps3 is over 6 yrs old spawn, still works like a charm. I started buying, and collecting for it again recently. You really cant go wrong with the PS3, it has an incredible game library to say the least. I highly recommend motorstorm: pacific rift if you like racing games, its friggin awsome. The PS3 still holds up graphically in my opinion, even to this day
Bought a used back-compat Phat PS3 a few months ago and I’ve already logged in over 100 hours on Persona 3 FES! It sounds like a jet engine, but she handles well.

It's weird. I've owned that game since close to it's release. I have never played through the full game and still love it. I hope to make time to play it through. BUT BUT.......I will never sell it.

Still have my ps3 super slim, true it was the worst looking due to its bland exterior with a sliding tray instead of touch controls, yet its sturdy as hell and plays my ps1-2 jrpgs along with the amazing driver sf with a quiet fan. However, I am now looking at the Xbox series S, check out how you can legally emulate most past gen ps Nintendo and sega consoles and games. Long live the old gens!
In the middle of the PS360 generation, Walmart started to demand media be more eco friendly, so that prompted the end of instruction manuals in games, plus on 360 & DVD those horrible eco cases with chunks taken out of the plastic that weakened the spindles & caused discs to fall out & get scratched to hell.
Props to the PS3 for being the first console with an HDMI port.

ive made the mistake of letting family borrow consoles and games, and they never gave them back. always "losing" things.

Not at all the Ps4 was slow even when it first came out. Smartphones open apps faster.
yup the PS3 was groundbreaking in terms of computing power at the time. Also compared to the 360 it had HDMI, Built in Wifi, Bluetooth controllers and support, and free online. Truly an amazing console for the time.

I bought one with thirty games for $200 last month, a slim model. It's my first Sony console since the PS2 and it was basically a relaunch of PS3. Simple, sleek and elegant, with all the exclusive content, it's easy to see how Sony won back so many fans to finally eclipse the 360.
I strongly recommend the 1st-party games, by far the most impressive titles on the PS3. Some of the exclusives are quite good, but Sony, by far, got the most out of their own system with that generation.

I got this back in 2011, it still works perfectly, the controller that came with it that was used also works perfectly to this day, play on a near daily basis still to this day even though I have all the other Playstations now, my personal favorite console of all time

BC PS3s are just the best if you can get a reliable one. Three generations of PlayStation games in one box with one controller, all through HDMI and with usually-good deinterlacing for PS2 games, is just fantastic! Do be sure to jailbreak yours and install WebMan for auto fan control so that your PS3 can live a little longer (and a little louder...!)

I just picked up one too . I played it once and then changed the thermal paste . I wish I had a cmos battery at the time though . I kinda said fuck it though cuz I would have to rig it up, being it’s in that stupid setup. Mines a emulation backward one 80g 4 usb model . I bought it thinking it was a 60 gig og model . @@slayerofsouls1182 The partial hardware BC models like what you've got have a much better implementation of the smoothing filter by the way. There's very little coverage of that fact, but after trying it out in person with an A01 vs E01 and watching the few comparison videos that are out there it's a night and day difference. It's a noticeable filter for sure, but it looks great on 3D titles. Both smoother AND sharper, not just a generic blur. So in my opinion you ended up with the better model. ;)

I bought my PS3 Slim a little over 2 years ago and paid around $80 for it. I currently have almost 60 games in my PS3 library that I paid $3-15 each. I looked up the going price for them last week and it's insane what some of these are going for. I'm never going to sell them. When I move into a bigger place I'll have more than 2 consoles hooked up so I can revisit them more.
It irks me to no end that Sony doesn't implement backwards compatibility. Modders have proven its not difficult.

Just recently purchased a backwards compatible PS3 on eBay and been putting together a nice collection of PS2 and PS3 games. It’s so awesome to play games like Guitar Hero on PS3 and Champions of Norrath for PS2.
I've bought PS consoles from the very first.
It's immensely disappointing to see their lack of respect for the games that not only made them as popular & wealthy as they are- but also the disrespect with the PSOne: Classic and their lack of investment to older titles.
This is something that makes ZERO sense to me. They've made a pretty good PS1 emu on the PS3, they could get programmers on to help with one for the PS5 but they don't. They avoid selling these old games at all costs.
So they're either afraid of someone seeing their state of the art machine playing something so 'ugly', or they're not interested in a small but constant revenue stream and just want big bucks especially with their bone-headed price increase in new titles.
I got the PS3 when my PS2 was broken by someone careless, I was like- backward compatible? Play all my PS1 & 2 games that I still own? Sell the old consoles & some of the accessories to get more stuff for PS3? YEAH.
I'm sat with a PS4 Slim, that's more than enough powerful to not only emulate- but UPSCALE these old PS1 & 2 games but- they don't. It's just irritating

I wish I got on better with Xbox, I tried with the 360 from the start and I had several redrings with the early models and gave up on that system. Heard the last revision is basically entirely different machine and won't have that issue but it was too late then.
But now I hear the current Xbox Series X/S have always online DRM with all their games.
So, I'm extra turned away now. All the systems have issues. Even Switch. Want to back up your game saves? Gotta pay for it- when everyone else has a free option.

It's an incredibly major problem but apparently not something very many xbox owners know about considering I haven't heard about it until just last week. The PS3 is a great system to start on if you want cheap gaming for a great price. I love using it as a media player for my music CD's. The only downfall of the media functionality is that Sony stopped supporting automatically finding the CD info whenever you connect to the internet, which means you have to manually type out the album title and song names.
Wait, that ran through a Sony Server too? Damn..... i hope there's a way to change it to a free CDDB url, with a Custom Firmware. So that audio CDs will get properly detected again.

This is what I did to my ps3 during quarantine. Jailbroke my ps3, borrowed my friends and family's games I didn't have and ripped them all using multiman and loaded them all on HDD.
I won a ps3 super slim on ebay and it comes with 18 games and all the cords and 1 controller. It said the system was tested and it works. Cant wait to get it to replace my ps3 super slim I bought back in 2014 that took a dump on me. I wish knew more about taking them apart and fixing them. Great videos.

Funfact: the moment everyone talks about the PS3 prices. On the PS4 there are ALOT of great Games cheap to get. Im not really a Sony Collector and buy only Games i want to play, but i have now over 70 PS4 Games in my "not collection" physical and most of them only costs me 5-10€. And yes there are Games included like Dark Souls 3. God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Shovel Knight, Bloodborne ect. And noone told me to do this.
For PS3 i buy only Games that are exclusive and interessting. Not every crap that was released, just to try making a "full set" and wasting space on the shelfs

I Absolutely love Playstation 3. I've had fond memories of Playing Awesome games like Ratchet and Clank games, Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham city , Transformers fall of Cybertron, I could go on and on about how many great games that we've had in that era. I still play the Ps3 and the graphics still holds up to this day. It's a must get for sure :)

Indeed, I bought most of my PS2 and PS3 games at the end of 2019 and they've only been getting more expensive ever since. Crazy! The pandemic surely hasn't helped since more people are bored at home wanting to collect things.
So when it comes to manuals and ps3 games, you’ll see a 50-50, I believe it was towards its mid life cycle when they started to cut back on manuals and even having colorless inserts saying you can look at a digital manual, personally I think it was to cut costs as the digital era also played a part in helping it not exist any more. It makes me sad.
Also, yes, I believe during late 7th gen, they stopped making manuals. I bought Halo 4 and I was confused when it didn't came with one.
I remember when I bought my PS3 back in Ireland shortly after it came out. I registered online and sony actually sent me a blu-ray of Casino Royale. Don't know if I won it in a lottery or something but it was nice of them. Super cool and I still have it to this day.

The PS3 is my favorite system to collect for. I have a full US set, and sitting currently at 1601 PS3 games, with a full Greatest Hits set as well. It looks nice all together on 1 shelf, but split from the main collection. The PS3 certainly is notorious for all of its spine differences:
You have the initial design (used from 2006-end of 2009) with the red PS3 logo at the top of the spine.
The redesign logo (first used in October of 2009) where its the black PS3 logo at the top of the spine.
Then you have Greatest Hits games.
Also the 14 Blue Label games (released from February 2014 - June 2014).
And if you collect the ESRB games from Latin America, you have the Favoritos lineup (Latin America's Greatest Hits equivalent) which have Gold Spines, and you have the Digitales Lineup (digital codes in a case), which have Silver Spines.
A ton of diversity in the PS3 library, but it is super fun to discover and collect everything!!

@@Ozzyozzysheesh mostly 3 bookshelves I got from Target. They fit games 2 deep, so I put all the shovelware/sport games in the back, that way more notable, rare, and valuable games are at the front. I have the rarest and most valuable games on the top shelf, all in box protectors.

I also started collecting physical PS3 games after the whole PSN freak out! So many great games, my wife already owned the FF Lightning Trilogy with the last two games in steel books so that's pretty cool
PS3 was the console that did the major breakthrough in gaming. It introduced bluray, hdmi and (especially towards the end of its generation) the 3D games as we've come to know them in recent years. For me, more or less, PS4 is a PS3 in 1080p and PS5 in 4K. Ok screen analysis is important of course, but PS3 has it all on 720p. Monster games like the last of us, GTA V, skyrim, red dead redemption, uncharted 1,2,3, all kind of games like crysis, far cry, metal gear, fallout, COD, fifa, pro, nba 2K, you name it. Plus the move technology and games like just dance, resident evil, tennis but also countless sport games that take advantage of it. Amazing console. Mine was destroyed from excessive gaming and I bought another one in order to continue playing my huge backlog of games (that need two lifetimes to complete).
If you play Skyrim at this point on PS3, make sure you increase the brightness to the highest level. It looks ridiculously dark on PS3.

Or you could just get a slim, put custom firmware (CFW) on it and play every single PS2 game ever made on it. A modded slim is way better than any other PS3. The original PS3 is not as capable of playing PS2 games as a slim with CFW.

@@nissan_6828 All you have to do is convert ANY PS2 game that doesn't work into a PSN .PKG file, and it works. Yes, every single game. Yes, some do not work as an .iso file, converting them to a PSN .pkg file solves that issue. I have done it with literally every PS2 game that allegedly didn't work.

PS3 stands next to the gamecube as my favorite console of all time. Too bad that similar to Nintendo's treatment of gamecube, Sony doesnt seem to care about this system and many of the gems on this system are stuck there with no future. Really hope emulation is drastically improved for PS3.

I love the PS3. I own a PS3 Super Slim model and I love it. I had lots of fun on my online PS3 games.
I loved the ps3, some of the exclusive games were brilliant and are with my all time favourites. Mine broke but I want another. They sell them in pawnshops here in the uk for around £50/60 and the games are like £3-5 each 👍

I'd been wanting to collect the exclusive RPG's that are on the PS3. So, I had been buying more PS3 exclusive RPG's fairly recently, as well as anything else I wanna play or other RPG's I see for cheap. Within the past few months, I have acquired black label Ni No Kuni, Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII, Darksiders II, NieR, Drakengard 3, Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Neptunia Victory, a sealed copy of Persona 5, the limited edition of Mugen Souls, and The Guided Fate Paradox with its soundtrack. Although, I recently acquired The Witch and The Hundred Knight with its soundtrack, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Time and Eternity. Mainly collecting the RPG's because those games tend to go up in value the most, alongside horror.
That being said, I've also bought Split/Second, Silent Hill HD Collection, Xblaze Lost Memories, Batman Arkham Origins, and LittleBigPlanet as well.

@@gott2641I mean, the RPG genre is my favorite genre, closely followed by horror. So, a lot of games I've been buying lately are RPGs. Not just for PS3 though. Combined, I have quite a lot of RPGs for other consoles.
I will have to look into getting The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. I've been wanting to try out The Guided Fate Paradox for awhile anyways, so if I enjoy it, that will really motivate me to try and get my hands on the sequel. As for the Neptunia games, I already owned the first one on PS3, I just needed the other two.

Don't call old school games retro, here is why:
Retro describes something relatively new (a product, style) that imitates that of the past. Retro is not original but is inspired to appear like the original. Vintage refers to something original, aged between 20-100 years, is rarer and therefore has more value than its retro counterpart.

I was so glad that the PS3 store stayed open when they were going to shut it down! I’ve been playing my PS3 on and off over the years but not long before the announcement of the store closing I had bought a bunch of PS1 classics like Silent Hill and the original Resident Evil games (1-3). It just sucks that it’ll still get shut down soon enough. The PS3 is still a great console that warms my heart when I see the layout and floaty background :)

Put a SSD in it. It'll fix quite a few of it's issues. It'll improve texture streaming for quite few of its game. Like Rage and all Unreal Engine 3 games. It'll fix Arkham Origins awful texture streaming and asset popin. I'd reccomend either a Crucial MX500 or a Samsung 860 Evo. The 1TB models are very affordable now. With inbuilt Cache for smaller files. Samsung 860 Evo 1TB is the one to get.

@@18837ven Yeah! It's not gonna fix every issue. But using one will improve the stability of the system and games. It won't improve CPU related fps drops, but will make sure the fps doesn't drop when it comes to texture,asset and world related stream fps drops. Games will feel more stable because of it. Also textures will load way faster. I think the highest SSD you can use is like 1.75TB. But people never talk about trying a bigger size in a PS3 Super Slim. PS3 Super Slim has a few SATA related improvements over the other PS3 systems.
@@18837ven You want to see examples of this. Look up Rage PS3 SSD Digital Foundry or Skyrim PS3 SSD Digital Foundry. They had a look years back. SSD's have vastly improved since then, so you get even more benefits from one as they have inbuilt Cache these days to remember smaller files.
I didn't have any plans at first to grab some PS3 games, but this video reminded me of some games I wanted to grab when the PS3 was out, and I didn't have one. I'll probably head to my local cartridges galore store and see what they have.
I would love to keep my PS3 running forever. As it is now, within minutes the fan kicks on and runs at ludicrous speed. I swapped the power block (I forget what its called) inside to the cooler one and put fresh thermal paste on the 2 plates (forget what they're called too). Still runs very hot. I'm afraid to play it and cook it. What can I do?
Both the cell and the rsx have thermal paste under the headspreader. U have to take both of these of and put new on it, but be careful about it. You can easily do damage. Buy a ylod ps3 and try it first with this system.
Buy a slim
If it is regular FAT model (non backwards compatible), just find some video how to delid PS3 and try it. If you kill it, just buy slim, they cost peanuts. If it is BC model, be way more careful so you do not kill it. BC models are, and will be sought after

I'm actually changing out the thermal paste of three of my PS3s today.

I just did that to a PS3 I picked to tinker around with. Throughly cleaned it out, new CMOS battery, new thermal paste and a new SSD hard drive.

There are several PS3 games with no manuals. I feel bad for the eBay sellers who point out ‘no manual’ for games that never had them anyway and it makes it sound not complete.

I still remember when I opened the very 1st playstation. Got the 2nd and 3rd then just took a break.. became a dad 😅 gave away 1st and 2nd but kept 3rd. Bought 4th few years back..(for my kids)and Last year purchased ps5. Yesterday when I was bringing out the Christmas decor I found my ps3. I'm planning to have a set up with the last 3 generations.. ps3, 4, and 5, by the end of the week in the man cave..too bad my kids will enjoy, not me🤣. Wish I kept them all.
I recently imported a White PS3 160gb slim from Japan. It is complete in box, and in amazing shape. Mostly bought to be able to play Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Which I did end up buying the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection.
Before that I ended up buying like 15 games and a USA Black slim ps3 for 50 bucks from a neighbor, but that PS3 died. But it was still a good haul due to the value of the games I got in it.
So when i was looking to buy another PS3, i decided to take a chance at importing one from Japan, since they apparently take very good care of their things. So if you can't find any good PS3s around, don't be affraid to import a Japanese version.
The only 2 caveats with a Japanese Imported PS3 are the fact that it will not play NTSC-U PS1 games due to region lock, and X and Circle are switched functionality in the menus. Other than that, it perfectly plays US PS3 games. And yes, the menus and all are in which ever language you choose, so it is all in English for me.
Thank you Sony for making us collectors out there have to go out and find some working PS3's, since you want to forger about it.

I wish I could turn the clock back to the PS-2 and PS-3 days….the world was so so so much better and more fun….literally use to have all nighters playing Tiger woods golf in 2003-2006….it was still fun even playing alone after that….miss those years

I skipped the PS3 generation and bought one almost 2 years ago to play the games I missed out on, I bought a bunch of games for it and I’m glad I did cause these prices are crazy now lol.

I've had a brand new PS3 sitting in my closet since around 2010. I had thought of building a dedicated Mortal Kombat cabinet based around it, but that never happened. So it sat there unopened for more than a decade. I've recently finally unboxed it and set it up because I wanna play the Last of Us (due to having watched the series on HBO Max).
Respect for not selling it or keeping it sealed and instead actually putting it to use. Hope you enjoy TLOU!

I got a ps3 console 500gb slim I found at a pawn shop under $100. I love this console so much.
Bought my backwards compatible ps3 last year and I've been collecting games even rare games that are hard to find as well. Some of the rare games are brand new and I'm not opening them lol.
Well since you own the games you can legally download the ISO/roms and put them on your PS3 modded.
I didn't realize how hardcore the these retro markets get till I started pricing my PS1games.
My ps3 is over 6 yrs old spawn, still works like a charm. I started buying, and collecting for it again recently. You really cant go wrong with the PS3, it has an incredible game library to say the least. I highly recommend motorstorm: pacific rift if you like racing games, its friggin awsome. The PS3 still holds up graphically in my opinion, even to this day

Bought a used back-compat Phat PS3 a few months ago and I’ve already logged in over 100 hours on Persona 3 FES! It sounds like a jet engine, but she handles well.

I started collecting PS3 about 6 months ago, right before the prices went up. Actually got 3D Dot Game Heroes for $35, I can’t believe how much it’s gone up. The lots were really cheap back then too.

It's weird. I've owned that game since close to it's release. I have never played through the full game and still love it. I hope to make time to play it through. BUT BUT.......I will never sell it.

I collect ps3 titles as well, the funny thing is that I can get ps3 games at a local thrift store in my town for 1 to 2 dollars each, so I tend to get titles that I dont have, great video

Online play is completely free, no PS plus membership required. I even made my series based on PS3 games, showcasing content.

Still have my ps3 super slim, true it was the worst looking due to its bland exterior with a sliding tray instead of touch controls, yet its sturdy as hell and plays my ps1-2 jrpgs along with the amazing driver sf with a quiet fan.
However, I am now looking at the Xbox series S, check out how you can legally emulate most past gen ps Nintendo and sega consoles and games.

In the middle of the PS360 generation, Walmart started to demand media be more eco friendly, so that prompted the end of instruction manuals in games, plus on 360 & DVD those horrible eco cases with chunks taken out of the plastic that weakened the spindles & caused discs to fall out & get scratched to hell.
Glad I bought all my ps3 games last year. After these types of videos: even PS5 moves games are now $20+ 😂.
One good thing about the PS3 is all games were region free ....for example you can play UK games on a USA PS3 and vice versa
