my god i still wish i had my phat ps3 :’( all my gigabytes of childhood memories were lost in my house fire in 2017. i picked mine up with bday money in 2008 when i was 5 and kept playing even when ps4 and xbox one became mainstream. i miss everything about that console, and im considering getting the same model that i had just to relive my childhood memories.
We really have to commend Sony for continuing to support our beloved PS3, 17 years after it's release date. The store is still open & there was even a new 2023 system update. What a beast of a machine it is. Mine has functioned without fault all this time I've got to say I'm absolutely f**kin impressed.
@@Catalyst254 I still play it even tho I have a PS4. Shooters like Crysis, Killzone & Alien are still great & PS3 has the Sharp Shooter. Sony really dropped the ball with it's aim controller as it only works in VR. If you want 2D shooters with an actual gun then PS3 is still the best option.
I really enjoyed the PS3, but I ended up having four in total due to the disc player failing in the first three. Two original models, and one of the first slim model.
@@DanielRFoxDude changing the laser is a really simple process and worth looking into. I bought a KES-400A laser cassette for my OG PS3 and changing it took less than an hour from start to finish. It only cost me something like ten bucks too.
@@tryksta7247 I bought both the PS3 60gb and xbox 360 +hd dvd to sort out which format was best.. i barely used either.. i think i gamed on the PS3 a total of about 10 hours (if that).. i watched a handful of movies and there it sits today, in my entertainment center, collecting dust. I dont believe ive turned it on in a good 3-4 years
@@herbyverstink I am not a gamer so I didn't really use my PS3 a lot either. What has changed that is I bought a Logitech steering wheel set used, and then a couple of Gran Turismo games on ebay. I have the wheel setup on a stand in my theater so I can play on a 106" screen (largest I could go for this particular space). I liked Gran Turismo when I was younger, going back to the PS2, but it got boring pretty fast. Playing with the wheel though, it's incredibly fun. I am in my late 40s now, a car guy that respects the laws of the road, so its a blast to go downstairs and race around a track. I cannot remember the last time I played any other game.
yes, stand alone BD players were double the price. And PS3 was the benchmark BD player for over 6 years after its release. I used my 60GB OG fatty from 2007 until 2018 for all mediaplay: cd, dvd, BD +streaming. Gaming wasn't that good, and I did jump into xbox wagon (had to have 2 consoles because RROD, but those clan games couldn't wait)
The capacitors were never the issue. There is a guy who did very deep research on the yellow light of death. Turns out, the GPU was not designed correctly on the first couple of models. The constant heating and cooling messed up internal solder points within the GPU chip itself. There are now fixes for it if you can get a specific type of PS3 slim, remove the GPU, and then replace it on your FAT PS3. Itll take some skill, or some money to pay someone skilled, but there is a way to save the original PS3's. Just figured I should point that out. The video is called A PS3 Story: The Yellow Light Of Death by RIP Felix
Not fully true, Felix covered it in a second video - The Tokins can still go bad, and it's the most likely cause of the YLOD if you don't have a 90nm RSX (So CECHJ, K, L, P and 20xx slims)
@@Mathias4595well no shit. for one, the capacitors are getting old and are reaching (in a frequency used system) their estimated life span. And two, capacitors will die eventually much sooner than anything else on any system (assuming the given system didn’t have a major defect elsewhere.)
The original PS3 genuinely felt like a truly ‘premium’ console. It’s a shame that they paid dearly for it for a large chunk of that generation (though, they came out on top eventually).
That OS was too difficult to develop games on. they now use the x86 architecture insteadof their own OS. Xmb was cool but id rather have stability and easier support from all devs.
I remember getting my first job in 2007 and saving up for a PS3 I was one of the few in my highschool that got the more expensive PS3 as opposed to the 360. Great console. Great memories.
MGS4 was basically my sole reason to get a PS3. Other games such as Uncharted and Last of us have been rereleased or remastered, but to this date MGS4 remains a true PS3 exclusive for the PS3 only.
I am taking a ride to my storage unit RIGHT NOW to pick up my PS3. I haven’t played it since 2014. I was about to spend money on a PS5. But after watching this video, I am back in love with my PS3 and will enjoy it for a while longer before getting a new console. Thank you for this video!!!!
HD gaming, wireless controllers by default, free online multiplayer with built-in Wi-Fi, streaming services, blu-ray, region-free consoles, storing save data on hard drives, etc. The ps3 is easily one of the most revolutionary consoles ever.
Same I have PS5 I like it but the PS3 is still better it’s not about the graphics we all know the PS5 has better graphics It’s about the nostalgia and the amazing games and backwards compatibility PS3 has the best games of any Sony console!
Being a multiple PS3 console owner it’s important to note that it’s widely known the first Xbox 360 variant had a 50% + “red ring of death” failure rate it overshadowed the PS3’s own YLOD, disc drive & laser reliability issues. PS3’s aren’t aging well & you’re seeing fewer functional systems. Sure, the super slim is known to be the most reliable PS3 console but let’s not forget about the “bios bomb” battery issue that will make PS3 consoles useless unless Sony updates so PSN check in isn’t required before shutting it down. IMO it’s going to be incredibly difficult to enjoy all those fantastic PS3 games in 5-10 years unless Sony allows backwards compatibly on PS5. Just my opinion being a PS3 owner
The PS3 in my opinion was one of the 1st modern consoles. Still holding up well. Features younger games may take as common originated on the PS3 and yes later XBOX 360. I wouldn't call the PS3 retro just yet, as the newer consoles haven't really innovated the way the PS3 did over a decade ago. Yea, resolution and graphics have gotten better and you can play some games in VR if you care about that but nothing like being to play a game in HD for the 1st time. Wireless controllers right out the box. Speaking of controllers, the original PS3 controller was quite innovative as well with motion controls built in (I know few games used it, but still.) You could run apps from it, play blue rays, surf the web, and so much. Ahead of its time when it released.
Stop this nonsense. They charged your ass $600 for a prone to failure console that didnt start seeing great games until 2008. I like my ps3 60gb but let's not act like the ps3 did some innovation lmao. The online experience was way behind xbox live, mic quality wasnt great and the wireless controllers left a lot to be desired. You are just living off of nostalgia at this point.
Man i still look back fondly to Christmas 2008 when I got my PS3. Got Guitar Hero World Tour with it too. One of my favorite gifts ever. Still have it along with what I swear has to be 100 games. Its been a trooper over the years and still works great for me.
I might just be an exception but i have a lunch model which I've owned since new, no maintence has been done to it (never opened) except cleaning the exterior case and its still working as of today. I've used it for so many hours playing assassins creed games, gran turismo and the batman games just to name a few. There's been times I've accidently left it on during the night after I went to sleep and it never fails to keep working. Its quite honestly the greatest console to have been made by Sony, although I have been enjoying this ps5 quite a bit haha. I've owned every iteration of the playstation so far and the 3rd is my favorite.
Ahh, got my PS3 in 2007, i was a sophomore in highschool. My first game? Assassin's Creed. The graphics and open world of that game was ahead of its time.
I got mine December 2006 when I was a Freshman in highshcool. My launch games were Resistance Fall of Man and NBA 2K7. I remember being blown away by the graphics at the time.
I have this PS3. I’m not hardcore gamer and I like old skool and retro games. I bought my PS3 soon after the PS4 launched for £60! I had loads of PS1/2 games and buy PS3 games for next to nothing now. Great system which doesn’t cost much with a huge library of cheap games. Love it!
@@linerangersjusticebrown6225 Some people just like to be more old school bring back the good memories 🤷♂️ at the end of the day you can’t change their decision no need to call him a cheap skate.
I still have my launch 60gb Fat PS3 and it looks and works like brand new in the year 2022. I currently have it hooked up to my LG C1 65 inch with a surround sound system and the games still look good in todays standard based on the right picture settings used. Great video! 👍🏼 (Update) The fan noise level on my PS3 still remains at a constant level where it isn’t too loud when playing PS1-PS3 games. Since I have a PS5, I occasionally play my PS3 for a max of 3 hrs so it doesn’t overheat as well (warranty sticker still intact btw and never been opened). Remember these consoles are 15+ years old, so it’s important to take really good care of them so they can last on the long run. 🙏🏼
Running cfw was the best thing to ever happen to the piano black model aka the first ps3, and still is amazing to this day, this system and specifically the piano model may be the best system to have been released. Also, I don’t care what anyone says, Final Fantasy 13 was beautiful, amazing graphics and environmental detail. It’s actually the reason I got the console back in the day
The first PS3 was great. It was backward compatible. It allowed you to upgrade the HD very easily. It played Blurays. It allowed the Other OS feature. Then they took away the backward compatibility in subsequent models. Then they took away the Other OS. Of course, the YLOD was a major flaw of the first release. If you have one that still works, you're lucky.
Yeah the 65nm process version/s... 60gb and 20gb. Also had 4x usb ports and sd card slots, could use most formats of video/music, and had high compatibility with Bluetooth devices
I found a good CECHG01 model. It's not backwards compatible, but its a fat model. It runs great, and still plays games just fine. No loud fan, and I made a few small mods to keep it cool. I got it lifted on wood blocks, and I got a mini fan to blow cool air into the side vents. It's staying cool, and running perfectly. Doesn't really upset me that it's not backwards compatible, considering I have a perfectly working PS2 Slim
Well done! I have a PS3 slim and I upgraded the HD to 1 TB. I lose the PS2 compatibility but I was able to buy a lot of PS2 games via the PSN Store. It is also my Blu-ray 3D player. I actually discovered some great PS1 games via my PS3. I have had no issues with my Ps3 and it still plays perfectly.
I still play my PS3 slim....I have a Nintendo Switch also but the PS3 is probably the console I play the most at the moment. I consider it a modern retro console at this point. It has modern sensibilities like HDMI and wireless controllers, but considering it came out over 15 years ago I definitely consider it a throwback console at this point. Not too old but definitely not the latest in technology.
I just picked up a PS3 slim. Having missed out on that whole generation (minus the Wii), it really feels like the nexus between classic and modern hardware. You can wing it into your old CRT with composite cables or modern television with HDMI and it works just fine natively. The interface is ridiculously smooth and modern for something that came out in 2006. The slim model doesn't have full compatibility, but it also just works, and fits seamlessly with modern consoles on a shelf. In a way I'm upset that I missed out on it new, but in the other hand it's great to be able to pick everything up for so cheap. The going rate for any game seems to be about $5, and the games don't feel aged. I have about 30 games and a complete console and, all told, I'm still less than $200 in. It feels like such a steal.
It was the cheapest blue ray player at the time, and had free online, plus you can run linux play ps1 and ps3 games, unless you have the original like my father once did. Really a step up in hardware from the ps2 but developers struggled for this reason. Ps home was by far revolutionary for me and when I walk about it to this day it blows ppl away.
My comment was directed to the list of features that wasn't mentioned in this thread previously obviously it's not the only Playstation that has a built-in drive or the ability to use a external drive with
The PS3 is a classic. Glad I scooped one up again a few months ago (fat 80gb) love the looks of the piano black chrome finish in the front. Beautiful console. To me it's the best looking PS out of all.
It is INSANE how well this system still holds up. Gameplay still feels very modern. I am playing Spec Ops The Line and MotorStorm in 2024 and couldn't be happier. These are game experiences before "seasons" and live service. A system still with pure gaming.
I use my PS3 for RUclips and Netflix, since it's the only streaming console I have that can connect to my CRT. I also recently started getting into Call of Duty so there's that!
I got a slim about a year ago, I love it so much. Even though it's unfortunately missing full PS2 backcompat, fortunately a ton of games I wanted to play from that console were available via the PS store. To be honest, I bought it as a retro games machine but it's also been great to just play PS3 games in general!
I heard those full backwards compatible ps3's are prone to overheating and dying. I got the fat but it's only compatible with ps1 games but it still has that amazing design
I was skeptical about using my PS3 on a newer tv but it actually looks better on 4k, with all the settings and HDR that can be adjusted it's quite nice.
@@seriousstuff8887 They're maximum signal output is 1080p,but some higher end 4k TV's will have built in hardware upscaling that will upscale a 1080p signal to 4k.Even better if paired with another upscaling device like an Mclassic.
The 1st Xbox back in 2001 had a hard drive built in, played dvds, let you burn cds so you could listen to them while playing games. Playstation has a variety of games hands down but if we’re talking about features or superior ports of 3rd party games it’s always been on Xbox.
My father still uses our first Playstation 3, bought for christmas 2009, to watch his collection of BluRay films. It is only now starting to crack down as the fans are noisier every year. We got a second Ps3 for him to start using whenever that may happen. It is a great device.
If you're looking for the original model which is backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games, I would look for a fully refurbished unit with a reballed/replaced RSX as well as replaced NEC Tokin capacitors
These days, those fats are prone to getting YLOD. I learned the hard way with my 80 gig. After it got YLOD, and I tried to repair it twice with no luck, I got the slim instead
@@autolife2785 Yep I have a FAT and I only use it for playing Silent Hill...the rest I play on a slim like u..I was lucky with my FAt was from Person who never used it was a gift and he dont like to play games so the FAT was on the box several years, nevertheless I dont take the risk of using it too much...
@@miguelpereira7934 yeah. What's sad is, it's an awesome console with all the abilities it has, but it just breaks too easily. I really liked it while it lasted. I don't think the previous owner of mine really took any care of it. I sometimes feel like if I were to get a new motherboard for it, it might come back to life.
I own an originally purchased PS3 60GB system that is fully backwards compatible. I think I purchased in late 2007, maybe early 2008. Besides the Super Nintendo, GameCube Nintendo, XBOX 360, the PS3 is one of my all-time favorite home consoles. I just wished it’s capabilities were fully realized much sooner into it’s life.
To add to what I wrote earlier, my original PS3 60GB model has never been Updated. Not even once! I use my Super Slim PS3 500GB to play my games, so I don’t think it is even worth unboxing/connecting my PS3 60GB console to download over ten years worth of Updates. I think I used my PS3 60GB a couple of times to play games like Heavenly Sword, Genji, and some other game and to test my PSOne/PS2 games in it.
I’ll never forget Christmas that year. Getting a 60gig (which was huge back then), backwards compatible ps3 that had the part of the case that flipped up to reveal additional slots such as micro SD, I mean it had all the bells n whistles. Fast forward all these years later and I still have it in near flawless condition with the original box still intact. I’m a sucker for keeping the boxes I still have my OG PS1 box from 1995 lol. But yeah, it’s cool seeing videos like this n the nostalgia that comes with it. The ps5 is really good n I enjoy mine very much, but they’ll never have that “magic” that the likes of the PS2 and 3 had. Those to me were really the golden years of gaming n I plan to hold onto all of them just kinda like bookmarks in time.
60 gb ( huge back then) hold my beer. My first computer with a hard drive had a 20 mb harddrive. Modern smartphones take what? 10 plus mb still photos these days?
@@marcellachine5718 oh yeah. It’s how technology goes mate. I remember using DoS with floppy disks with 11mb of storage was considered “high capacity” lol
Yeah i have an original and a later one with the 80GB but at the time i didn't realise just what they had ripped out of the newer version. Extra storage was good for then but they took away the cool flap that opened with memory card options and removed PS2 compatibility lol. I still have both but the original one is my main unit for PS3.
I have two PS3s, an original launch model and a slim, both of which have been modded in full and upgraded to SSDs. The kiddo thought I was stupid for spending the money on getting them setup, "its so old", "why not buy a PS5?"....Then he saw what it can do and did he change his mindset quickly. Granted, we're getting him a PS5 for Christmas this year so its probably limited, but he loves playing emulated SNES/Sega titles and loves watching me play through The Last Of Us. I'm waiting for the original to YLOD, but I'm ready with my heatgun and soldering iron for when it happens -- I plan to keep that sucker going as long as I can just because of the sheer amount of fun I've had with it.
I absolutely love my ps3. I use it way more often than my ps4 actually… I still play gta 4, cod black ops 2, gran turismo 5 and cod world at war on my ps3. I always use it to watch Netflix, RUclips and Amazon prime video too. I also store lots of music on it. Ps3 is definitely my favorite console i have ever owned, and I say this after having played all ps1, ps2, ps3 and ps4 consoles. I still haven’t managed to get my hands on a ps5, but I hope I will soon find one! Amazing video btw, and I find amazing how many people still love a 16 year old console so much!
I remember having read the military bought a huge surplus of PS3s, as they made for inexpensive computing clusters (read that in an IEEE article). It was quite a revolutionary device... To the point where many of its components made the switch from lab to production exclusively for this console. Sadly, because of its incredibly ambitious hardware, developers couldn't get their heads around them so what they did was build a virtual machine that effectively crippled the platform so it could fall back in line and be much more familiar. Thought this would be a much more technical video but it was fun, to be honest... I didn't know about these games lol only a bit about the tech specs
Yeah,I wonder why no one goes in depth about how the military and other corporations used the PS3 as they've obviously seen value in its complexity. I wish Sony would've pushed the peasants aside and commit.to this sort of innovation today. It's unfortunate what they've become.
USAF bought several hundred PS3 when it was first released and Installed Linux, which you could do in the early years, and created a very powerful cluster computing set up,
This was the best PlayStation Ever… I still have mine… PS3, PS5, PS1 … and I do miss handheld memory cards… go to a friends house with ALL your Data… thanks 🔥💯👌🏽
having literally owned every PS from 1 to 5 and even a PSP... PS3 was the most fun... and I love my PS5... but the gameplay on PS3 was awesome. I need to go get one again.
I bought a PS3 for the first time on eBay, but it was the slim model. I initially wanted to buy the original phat PS3 but because of heard of people getting scammed over the overheating issue and also cuz I hated that the gloss of the console easily gets scratched.
I remember that the XMB got a lot of hate back when the PS3 launched. It was probably mostly fanboyism, because I remember being on forums and fan sites and reading people who don't own a PS3 complain how they hated how it looked and thought it was confusing. Comparing it to present day, or even just later xbox interfaces though, it is clearly superior.
In 2009, I was looking at buying a stand-alone Blu-ray player but in the end decided to buy the PS3 Slim for $100 extra. I was glad I did. Got to play a lot of great games and then they later released an update for the PS3 to give 3D support. I loved playing certain games in 3D once I got my 55 inch passive 3D TV in 2011 and also being able to play back 3D movies. Had I cheaped out and just bought the stand-alone Blu-ray player, I would never have gotten to experience any of the games that I did or the 3D. I still have the PS3 now and it is working fine, and I even still have the 3D TV in the spare bedroom although two out of the three HDMI ports have since crapped out.
@@notrecyborg5492 They did come out with a system software update years ago that allowed you to take advantage of 3D Blu-ray movies and it works great! You just need to have a 3D TV to hook the PS3 up to. Luckily I still have my old 3D TV from 2011 hanging around and still occasionally enjoy that feature.
I bought a PS3 in 2011, and I sold my Xbox 360 to buy it. I still have it to this day. The two main reasons I wanted it was better exclusives, and because I didn’t want to pay to play online. One of the games I have for it is Need For Speed Rivals, and I still find people playing that one online to this day.
Great video! 💯 I remember getting my PS3 "original" vividly. Being a resident evil fanatic, I bought a GameCube in 2005 so I could play RE4. I bought a PS3 the next year because at that time it was actually cheaper to buy the PS3 then to buy a Blu-ray player! And slowly but surely the absolute killer games started being released on the console. About a year later real high speed Internet hit my area. I still don't own a PS4 or PS5. With the advent of modern PC gaming that actually was low technical stress (the youngsters don't know how horrible that used to be ), I never saw the need to upgrade my console. Yesterday (3/05/2023), my PS3 finally gave up the ghost. I think it's interesting that my first instinct was not to go look at prices of a PS4 or PS5, but I'm looking to replace my PS3. I know I got lucky, but I've received almost 15+ years of near flawless use of my PS3. TVs came and went, but my PS3 kept kicking. I don't think I've ever owned a piece of electronics that has lasted this long (I've had my Mac mini for 10 years). So thank you again for this video. I didn't know much about the "super slim" but you've convinced me to avoid it. Lastly, Sony several months ago was going to stop supporting the PS3, but the noise from fans convinced them to at least postpone it. You can't buy games directly from the PlayStation store anymore, but you can buy a gift card from Amazon or some other source which works just fine. And all this time later, a PS3 is still a great Blu-ray player. So I've come full circle.
I loved my Gamecube, but the PS3 probably was the best console I ever owned. I'm not a console guy anymore, but the PS3 was basically my home entertainment hub for several years -- Blu-Ray, I think it did DLNA (I streamed from PC somehow), good games. I also recall it had a really nice image slideshow features, sounds dumb but one rendered your pics as Polaroids that drift onto the screen.
I bought the 1st Gen PS3 console only on Facebook Market Place for $20 here in Alaska. It is in excelent condition and suprisingly works like new. Even the disc works too. It reads games like new. It was definately a hidden gem for sure. I’m glad I bought i for only $20. Best purchase I have made.🙃
Just restored a CechB01 BC ps3. New ssd, delid, thermal paste, new 19 blade fan, and trashed the Zssr power supply and got a nice Aps-226 in there. Along with my CechE01 these are amazing consoles but they arent getting any younger.
And I have mine right, my family bought a PS3 Fat for me in February of 2023, I wanted especially to have access to PS1 and PS2 games, also to PS3 games who were not brought to PS4.
I still have my PS3 hooked up but I never use it anymore. Most of the exclusives I would want to play have been ported to the PS4/5 now, I'd rather play PS1/2 on a CRT and any cross platform releases from the time are going to run better on 360 or PC most of the time.
The main reason I started playing my PS3 in 2022 is because of Demon Souls. Yes, I'm still struggling to get a PS5 and I was told that it's on PS3 as well
@@eemeli7093 Lol you must be younger than the PS3, yes Demon Souls originally released on PS3 and was remastered for PS5, there are even older from software titles that date back to the playstation one era, google "kings field" . :)
Nathan hits this review out of the baseball arena. This console Sony created IS their champion trophy, only for them to mess up with price override to put fans off, however this still revolutionise alot of gaming wonders we're seeing on the two now gens. The 60g console is awesome and adventurous, yet a letdown is the overheating which leads to TYLOD and TRLOD, to even modernise the circuit of handling overheating, things would still make this console the greatest....and agree with Nathan...it STILL is.👍🏿😁
In the end the ps3 outsold the xbox 360. The fact online gaming was free really helped in achieve that. I had the fat 60 model. When that died I got a super slim. People also forget even tho the nvidia gpu only had 256gb or vram devs could also use a few cores from cell cpu to make the graphics even better look at uncharted games etc
Indeed...some titles as Folklore,Deadly Premonition D cut,Silent Hill,Siren the blood Curse ,Nier and a few more are a little more expensive but overall there are lots of 5e games....
@@DerekMoore82 yep ur right, but I rather like to have the hard copy ,see the box the manual etc...sometimes its expensive toke me more than a year to get all the silent hill games and next to 1000e. but every time I loke at my colection give me a pleasant satifasction look at them...
Actually, the OG Xbox pioneered having saves on the HDD. Memory cards were an option, not a necessity. I never owned or used a memory card for my Xbox.
I recommend buying the slim PS3 and upgrade it with an SSD! I have the original 60GB and the Blu-ray disc reader/writer drive is starting to give up, replacing the drive is tedious and expensive! Although if your pockets are deep the original 60GB is worth it for the PS2 hardware emulation, Super Audio CD playback and the extra ports and connections. Another problem is the Wi-Fi card can sometimes give up but this can be fixed with restoring default settings! I love this console because my brother loved sharing games and controllers with me and it still remains extremely nostalgic and sentimental to me!❤️
I still use my PS3. I have the 60 GB original and use it to play my old PS2 and PS1 games. Infamous & Infamous 2 were definitely enjoyable games for me alongside the other big title games you mentioned.
I ve a huge colection ps3 games this days I m playing Nier,I bought everything I thought was relevant for me since Last of us,Folklore,Silent Hill, all Residen t Evil ,Siren the boold course, the journey,Call of Duty ,etc but I never bought Infamous u think that game is still good this days ? as a good History etc ?
I had the 80G and for me is the best PS ever assembled. I played my PS1 & 2 games, especially Marvel vs. Capcom - Awesome !!! Grfx were also enhanced when played in this REAL backward compatible edition. It's logo, like Rolls Royce' emblem on their tires' hubcap - stays upright no matter how you position the console. Unfortunately, our apt got flooded from tenants upstairs and got all our entertainment system in the living room water soaked. When I returned it, no problem exchanging it, but at that time, they stopped manufacturing that super console, so I had to settle with the smaller version. That was a major blow for me.
@@anthonybell5160 Most Definitely! No question! It's actually advanced for it's time. My jaw dropped when I saw the screen was filled with moving, blasting, fire & smoke, sound effects, all happening at the same time without a glitch or strobes. The engine they used there was just unheard of before! 😳
I suggest getting one and modding it. Maybe not the original fat one, I never tried that, but I have a PS3 slim with ReBug and an SSD and it’s awesome. It can’t play the entire PS2 library but it can play a lot of games with minimal or no issues. Best benefit is installing all of your discs directly your HDD/SSD. Loading times are insane for PS2 emulation.
And native HDMI out* Converting old systems to HDMI sucks, and the adapters suck too. Having native HDMI on a system capable of emulating NES, SNES, N64 (mileage may vary), Sega Genesis, GameBoy OG-GBA, etc is a godsend not only for convenience but video and audio quality as well. Can’t beat it IMO. If I could only have 1 system ever I’d keep the PS3.
IMO using an SSD is kind of pointless since the speeds are bottlenecked by the SATA 1 interface it’s plugged in to, so it’ll preform no better than a HDD, maybe slightly faster but it’s not a big difference. I think the only reason you would wanna get one is cause of reliability, it has no moving parts so it’ll last for a very long time and will survive being dropped.
My dad pre-ordered the PS3 when it launched because Blu-ray players were roughly the same price as a PS3. He wanted the Blu-ray disc Drive and I got to play games
Sony integrated the Cell processor in the PS3 to make it uncost effective to design games for it and other platforms. Essentially trying to make game companies chose and hold them hostage.
The plastics on the SIXAXIS actually age better, in my experience. It only feels cheap because it’s so light due to a lack of rumble motors. There’s so much that goes into running and maintaining a PS3 with full backwards compatibility, and many owners disagree about what is and isn’t necessary, but even after the preventative maintenance I’ve done to my 20GB, I only use it for PlayStation 2 software. I use a 500GB Super Slim for PlayStation 3 software, but I use an adapter to use it with a DualShock 4.
Got two PS3s in front of me as we speak! Long story.. It’s basically my favorite all around system.. Definitely the most well balanced.. Although I have owned my PS4 Slim for 5 years and it has grown on me..
I actually had the original PS3 and loved it until the DVD player broke, and I sold it for cheaper and got a PS3 Slim. I miss the OG design, though. Seeing it here again got me the biggest sad/happy memories of a long time.
Don't EVER get an original model PS3, its not worth it with how prone they are to failure. Stick with the Slim and Super Slim. If you want to play ps2 games then get an actual ps2 to do that. As long as you do that you're in for a treat, the PS3 is definitely worth your time. Lots of great titles and its also region free.

Looking back it really is astonishing how Playstation came along and just instantly became a major (if not leader) of console gaming, and then went on from strength to strength 😊
I miss the early days of the PS3, so many new concepts to take in and games to experience and when PS Home dropped it was like META before the meta, good times. 👍🏿👍🏿
I bought the 20gb model because I play DVDs, Blu rays, PS1-3 games all the time. I spent a little over 300 on it. Glad I did, as the blu ray and PS3 games are really nice compared to my old PS2. Please note that the newer model that the video shows off, the one with more memory, frequently ceases playing PS2 games because of software updates. I kid you not!
@Scott doesntmatter and all... Is the Ceche01 mg one of those models this happens to? Is there another update that can be used so this does not happen to it?
Having owned my PS3 since August 2008 with the last BC with emulation 80gb then upgraded to 1tb that came with MGS4, I still use it from time to time and if you think about it, the last system to have physical ownership of playing games on it compared to PS4/PS5 you only own the license to the game. I did sadly suffered the YLOD for keeping on for long periods to download game demos and DLC for the my games. From Motorstorm, Resistance, MAG; if you know, Uncharted, Rachet & Clank, Castlevania LoS, and many more from my collection I bought over the years for it. My last best gaming system from that era.

I loved my PS3 & PS4. I am really enjoying my PS5 I just recently purchased. Playing all the PS4 games I purchased two years ago when I sold my PS4 thinking I would be able to buy a PS5 right away. I was sorely mistaken. I was finally able to buy a PS5 at normal retail from Target almost two years after it was first hit shelves.
I still have the PS3 CECHE01 80GB (Motorstorm Edition) I bought new when it was released. Even though it's not the hardware backwards compatible one, I'm happy with it. Mainly because I still have the original PS2 (Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec Edition) I bought new when it was released. So I'm set either way.
I remember buying the 80GB PlayStation 3 in 2007 which had PS2 software emulation. I was still in college back then, and I made the smart decision of saving some money for it ever since the price was revealed at E3 2006. I remember playing Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4 on it with my roommate. Those were the good times.
I bet you and your roomate were the laughing stock of your college for wasting upwards of $600 on a terrible console and a bunch of mediocre games. The only good games you mentioned on that list are Modern Warfare and GTA IV, both of which looked and runned better on Xbox 360.
@@NVintage I'm just saying the truth, Xbox 360 was a way better console. Not only was it cheaper than the PS3, but it also had a better controller, a better online service and better games. By 2007, the Xbox 360 had games like Gears of War, Oblivion, BioShock, Crackdown, Forza Motorsport 2, Halo 3, Mass Effect and a bunch more. And Xbox 360 also had the better version of multiplatform games. It was just a better console all around.
I still have and use every day, the original fatboy ps3 that plays the old PS games. We only use it for Netflix and I bought it about 12 years ago for $60 from a coworker who took it away from his son for bad grades lol.
Owning a PS3 since launch, i can say that owning a PS2 is worth it. My dad's PS2, which he bought before i was born in 2002. Still works now in 2022. It requires no cooling, no cleaning or maintenance, never buffers or glitches and can run for hours with no issues at all. And has been like this ever since i first played it at 6 and 7 years old. I still play it to this day and cherish the games I've still yet to complete due to inexperience and giving up a bunch. Sadly my PS3 heats up after an hour and has crashed so many time i can only use it for thirty minutes. And if it's below 73 degrees i can use it for a couple of hours. We have so many PS3 games but i can barely play them anymore... I'm a huge souls fan and we bought every souls game. So we still have every ps3 game we bought since i was 8 on a shelf ready to be played.
Just find someone with experience to take it apart. Clean it. Add new thermal paste. And swap the fan out if its bad. It may cost you $100 plus shipping both ways. I found an honest guy on ebays that was selling repaired consoles and asked if he would do the work. I have one more to send him to repair. He sent pictures of the repair step by step.
I remember my ps3 not working well in warm temperatures. One thing you could do is look for a gadget repair shop. Near me theyvare called gadget guru. The guys who work at those places are very capable and they can take apart your ps3 and clean all the dust out of it. You can easily do this on your own but it is possible to damage the electronic board if you are not careful
I brought the 80GB PS3 at launch. Within a few months it was $100 cheaper, and the fat PS3 had severe durability problems, mine lassted almost 2 years. I now have a PS3 slim and it has lasted years.
Agree with everything you said! I have no idea why Sony moved away from the XMB interface. It worked perfectly on both the PS3 and the PSP.
That OS was too difficult to develop games on. they now use the x86 architecture insteadof their own OS. Xmb was cool but id rather have stability and easier support from all devs.

I've used it for so many hours playing assassins creed games, gran turismo and the batman games just to name a few. There's been times I've accidently left it on during the night after I went to sleep and it never fails to keep working.

The ps5 is really good n I enjoy mine very much, but they’ll never have that “magic” that the likes of the PS2 and 3 had. Those to me were really the golden years of gaming n I plan to hold onto all of them just kinda like bookmarks in time.
I strongly agree !!
I wish I still had my ps1 box so bad! I do have the perfect t condition box for my original NES I got for Christmas as a little kid.
Everything about the PS3 was astonishing! The only negative points about that system was the price and the noisy fan.
You prefer it over ps4?
Funny, I remember hearing oddly similar things about the military and the PS2.
USAF bought several hundred PS3 when it was first released and Installed Linux, which you could do in the early years, and created a very powerful cluster computing set up,

having literally owned every PS from 1 to 5 and even a PSP... PS3 was the most fun... and I love my PS5... but the gameplay on PS3 was awesome. I need to go get one again.
What are your observations concerning CMOS battery in PS consoles? Did you ever replace it? I had ps2, ps3 and still have my ps4
It
was probably mostly fanboyism, because I remember being on forums and
fan sites and reading people who don't own a PS3 complain how they hated
how it looked and thought it was confusing. Comparing it to present
day, or even just later xbox interfaces though, it is clearly superior.
It got backlash for being super slow. If you owned an xbox you’d see how seamless it was to manage save files.
I still have the PS3 now and it is working fine, and I even still have the 3D TV in the spare bedroom although two out of the three HDMI ports have since crapped out.
what do you mean 3d? Can i do that to my ps3
Another badass thing about the PS3 is that it’s region free!
ya I had forgot that 1....and the on line gameplay is free too...
I remember getting my PS3 "original" vividly.
Best purchase I have made.🙃
I'll buy the slim model for 40 USD today, hope everything works fine

Till this day I still have the OG PS3 and it works like new. I also have the PS4 and waiting for the right time to get PS5 😊😊😊
Love mt playstation 3! The games in the used games market are really cheap rn, its a must have if you love gaming
Indeed...some titles as Folklore,Deadly Premonition D cut,Silent Hill,Siren the blood Curse ,Nier and a few more are a little more expensive but overall there are lots of 5e games....
Or you can just download any PS1, PS2, or PS3 ISO for free and play them on a jailbroken Fat PS3.

Actually, the OG Xbox pioneered having saves on the HDD. Memory cards were an option, not a necessity. I never owned or used a memory card for my Xbox.
I got the card jus to hack it. Super pain in ass back in the day. Xmbc was Kodi years before anyone even knew what that even was.
The XMB is God-tier
Having owned every console since almost the beginning of time the OG PlayStation was just unbeatable.
I have a PS3 right now. Unfortunately the yellow light of death took it away from me.

Most Definitely!
And native HDMI out*
Converting old systems to HDMI sucks, and the adapters suck too.
I have a dying PS3 that needs capacitors replacement. Can't wait to revive that baby. ❤️
You don’t need an adapter for a
DualShock 4 You can just use a USB cable
You can set the dual shock 4 up wireless on your PS3 also. The only thing I wish is whichever way you do it the home button would work lol
