  • Episode 212. Time for a blind taste test. I found this sample pack of Johnnie Walker on sale and decided to spend the afternoon sipping my way through. Many cuts and outtakes later, I am truly shocked by my pick. What is your favourite Johnnie Walker? #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour

    Thanks Jon.....A shame they didn't include the Green in there.....am sure you would rank it very high - better than Black or Blue.

      I love their Green Label. From memory, it is my favorite. However, from memory, Black label would have come in third so.....

    I know these JW's well (other than the Blue). Black Label still surprises me each time I try it: it's just really enjoyable. I think the 12 years in the casks converts the grain into something deeper. And the malts in it are from Diageo's better quality, characterful distilleries. Cheers to Canada. I'm thankful I work with two fine ex-pat Canadians, here in Australia.

    Howdy Neighbour.....I am new to Johnnie Black, I am almost finished my Chivas12 (liked it enough) but I've had some revelations with the JWB I bought recently. I can drink it neat, a bit of peat detected, a very nice finish, but with soda or water, it's got that pleasant smoky "bottom" (the best way I can describe it, nothing too intense like my one taste of the Ardbeg 10 ashtray). Less peaty than Teachers which I liked, but more refined somehow. Just a nice mellow scotch flavour, and I'm aok with that. Black Label is darn good, there's a reason it's so popular.

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  3 года назад +1

      This blind comparison forced me to look at Johnnie Walker Black again. I can't deny that I enjoyed this dram. It was not the best nose, or even palate, but when taken together, I just simply enjoyed it and would choose to relax with it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here and I'll need to try it with a bit of soda. Thanks for sharing!

    Black Label is the flagship of Johnnie Walker, the price point notwithstanding. If it was good enough for Churchill, it's more than good enough to me. I am a diehard Black Label guy, and I believe that it should be on the shelf of any scotch aficionado. For mixing (e.g. Rob Roy), I almost always incorporate Red Label (or maybe Famous Grouse). I have yet to try Blue Label, but I very much hope to try it soon.

    I finally opened my discovery pack a little over a month ago. I went through all 5 of these plus the red. I considered doing a blind tasting but ended up going through them separately. I ranked the Blue my favorite on the nose / smell... but the price and overall flavor lost me.
    Gold was my favorite overall for price and flavor.
    I’m also surprised that your chose black best in flavor... but there’s a reason so many people like it huh?

    Hi Jon I went a different way from you in that I tried Shelter point Single Malt at 46% abv against Deanston's Virgin Oak at 46.3% abv and found some significant differences and similarities. The SP. was all virgin oak the Dean st. was starter in ex-bourbon then finished in virgin oak. On nose the DS. was definitely ex-bourbon and the SP. had none. The DS. on the pallet had some sweet, sour and bitter the SP. was sour, bitter and grainy. It took one teaspoon of water for my taste in each and 30 min. of sitting for each to settle and calm down into good sippers. I'm borrowing your expression.
