I was looking for this method and on a different channel, one of the commenters pointed us to you. Boy am I glad! Not only are you easy to listen to and don’t have irritating background music, (a huge plus) your descriptions and directions are awesome. Easy to follow and remember. Thank you! Subscribed 😊. It always pays to scan comments.
Wow, this video is 10 years ago. I didn't even know I'd learn to sew one day. Thank you for explaining things in details. I've seen shorts about this and they all are too short to understand. Thanks again
I’m so happy to hear that!! I can’t believe how long ago this was made, either, but it continues to be one of my most popular videos. I love this technique and I’m just happy it helped you!!
Your demonstration is awesome! No one else describes the need for positioning the fabric correctly. You start right out with selvage/grain vs. cross-grain. I was working with a batik fabric so had an awful time figuring out the wrong side. I really needed your details. THANK YOU!
Those kissy, kissy sounds were so entertaining. You exude personality while being a great teacher! Thanks for demonstrating this not on a square piece of fabric, like the other videos I've watched, but on a rectangle.
awww, thank you so much!! I’m so glad this was helpful for you!! (And I think the rectangle makes the most sense, since the fabric COMES in a rectangle most of the time!)
You're an exact teacher! This demo was very easy to follow. I'll add that am easy way to store bias tape is by winding it an empty toilet paper roll. You can flatten the tube to save space but you'll get more creases. You can even cut the roll in half across the middle to store two different tapes.
Now THIS tutorial I can follow! Thank you so much for going slowly enough and repeating things so that it’s clear! Why do the other tutorials not mention offsetting the first line?!?? Why do they not mention that when you pick it up to make the seam the lines no longer match up?!!??? It was so helpful to be shown those things. So, thank you so, so much. This is absolutely Ever so helpful.💕
Linda Beebe They do, but she actually REPEATS it since many don't "hear" that information, and it is usually because they don't use the word "offset" snd show it more than one time. Listen to another tutorial and you will realize what I am saying, but that's why we like this explanation so much!! 😊😍
Novice sewer here, trying to make face masks. Watched your video a couple of times and decided to practice on a cotton table napkin. Worked perfectly the first time and got 6.75 yards of bias out of ONE napkin. Wow. Thanks for the excellent video.
Wxcelitutorial What a fantastic explanation of the need for bias on the edges of a blanket..... now that I know that I can’t let my blankets be bound with straight strips. also, thanks for the bubbly attitude in your voice... I need more of that example in my life.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK You. YOU have the clearest best explanation for bias tape making that I have come across. 2 days I wasted fabric trying to get this. I somehow take myself into ONE more try after I gave up yesterday. FINALLY someone who CLEARLY shows what to do. And I got my tape. THANK YOU.
Wow! One of the best sewing videos I've ever seen! No wasted chatter, lots of clear descriptions, great all around how-to. I know this was posted more than 6 years ago but for ME it was new and awesome. Thank you!
While I am also an MC Escher fan, I would prefer hearing exactly how much bias strip you got from what length of fabric. Also, in another video on the same topic, all information was given & included a formula for figuring out in advance how much bias binding will be needed for the project. In general, I liked how your video explained the concept of bias, why it's bias...all of that will help most people & is key. I feel you did very well, did it very clearly & your voice is pleasant, easy to hear & without outside noise- very nicely done.
You can find a chart from Dritz here that will show you how many linear inches of bias tape you get per yard of fabric used: www.dritz.com/sites/default/files/tutorials/dritz-tutorial-how-many-yards-bias-strips-will-your-fabric-produce.pdf I don't generally make an exact amount of bias tape, as I keep lots on hand for various projects and don't mind if I make extra, but the chart is printable and a great resource if you're buying yardage specifically to make bias tape from!
This is the best demo I have seen on making a continuous bias strip it is using only two seams sewn before cutting the strips which eliminate all the sewing of the short seams that are so hard to do and keep even being since they are at an angle.
Thank you so very very very much! This is the best tutorial on the whole internet on how to make continuous binding. Everyone else is either way confusing or waste way too much material. Thank you so very much for this tutorial I'm so happy I could cry.
Amazing video tutorial!! I have been sewing for 30+ years and this is the truth that you never cease to learn from other people!! Thank you for this FANTASTIC tutorial!! xoxox
Thank you!! You demonstrated this in a fashion that I can appreciate and understand! As a preschool teacher I tend to think in preschool fashion and the more detailed the better. Amazing and I'm full of confidence that I can do this now!
Thank you so much, this was the first time I have ever made bias binding, this video made more sense than the other videos I watched. I actually used 3/4 of a yard of fabric instead of the fat quarter and it turned out great. It made 20 yards.
this is the best tutorial I have found. clear, concise and not long winded and annoying. other than my pet peeve of the use of chillaxing I would give this a 6 out of 5 stars. you have saved me so much time and rescued me from endless frustration. Me and my couch cushions thank you.
This is great! It's so easy to overthink making continuous bias tape and end up confused and messing it up. You presented it in a very clear way that will make it much easier to keep in straight in my head. Thanks for making this video! I can't wait to make yards and yards of tape on my own!
I'v watched several videos showing this technique, but they were very confusing. Then I watched yours - va la! Easy to do because your instructions and video were so clear. Thank you so much!
Used this technique yesterday and worked so well. Just such a simply concept and yet not intuitive. Will be using this method time and time again as I have a lot of binding to do for bag making. Thanks for sharing and showing all the little bits which can easily trip you up.
I have tried doing this by watching a different video and ended up with a total mess! I loved this video because she took the time and made it very plain what she was doing. The other video I couldn't tell how she was matching up the lines. This was an excellent teaching for us beginners. Thank you!
For marking cut lines I save my expensive markers and use a plain writing pencil. It doesn't bleed and will wash out. I also like Crayola fine tip washable markers... (really any children's or school marker will work) because they are made to wash out. The markers also glide across the fabric without pulling. They come in various colors and are very inexpensive... usually a whole pack of washable markers for one fancy marker from the fabric store. And if you make cookies, your child might let your use one of theirs... so free! These last pretty well (unlike chalk that might brush away). (When I say "wash" I don't mean dab with water... it has to be fully saturated, a good rinse maybe a better term because I don't think you have to use soap.) Sending lots of love ❤ from sunny 🌅 Arizona 🌵
The truth is that any marking instrument will work (as long as it doesn't bleed will do the trick here as you are marking the cutting line... and if it left a stain, the stain would be hidden within the seem allowance. 💖🌞🌵😷
What a great tutorial. I have been looking for something like this so I could make 2.5in strips for many of the bags and quilts I have making recently. Thank you so much for such a great tutorial.
Great video! Clear, concise and entertaining as all get out. I recently tried the continuous bias method using the video by McCall's pattern editor. Seemed simple enough, but I got lost in the process very quickly. I most definitely will try again using these instructions. I am so happy that I came across this tutorial. I will watch it again when I am actually ready to cut bias binding for two quilts I am ready to finish. Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you... just made my very first bias tape thanks to you! No getting frustrated... enjoyable to make and now I am such a very happy bunny! X
Great tutorial for learning how to make yards of continuous bias binding in minutes. Once you get learn how to do this, you will never buy those expensive packages again that only come in limited solid colors. Make lots of bias binding in various fabrics and have fun with stripes, florals, and geometric shapes!
Gosh, isn't that the truth?? I want to have all the fun fabrics, in good quality cotton, right when I need it with no trip to the store. This technique makes all that possible!
Omg, thank you! I've been trying for 2 days to do this via other tutorials, and no one ever mentioned to offset the tube by the seam allowance...most everyone was concerned with a perfect square!
I have seen several tutorials on making continuous bias, but the way you explained it gave made a light bulb go off as I understood how it worked. Thanks.
To Cloudy Wishes; Thanks for the note. I'd forgotten about this video so now I'm saving it thanks to you. In real time, I don't sew much today, lots of years have passed and life takes over as does "old age", lol.
I just love the bing bing bings! Your humour and ever so clear instructions are excellent. I keep coming back to this video and enjoy it every time....one day I will 'get it' without having to reconfirm. But then I would miss the bings and your humour!
You know i just love those sound effects too and that is 1 of the reasons i keep coming back here, i cut a slightly larger piece and get 277" of Bias - who doesn't love that !
this is the best continious bias video tut I have found. I was able to make it, without it looking like garbage and it did jot have me pulling my hair out. thank u
Thank you so much, I'm a total beginner and trying to learn from RUclips. You have been the easiest and most enjoyable to watch so far. I can't wait to do this. I hope I find lots more from you.
such an enjoyable way of getting to grips with making bias binding continuous. took me a couple of goes to get co-ordinated but its such a time saver and saves a lot of frustration. Pat New Zealand
This is such a good tutorial that I even went to their website where it posted along with still pictures and a description of the steps. I printed that all off so I have it in hard copy too. Just in case the internet or RUclips decides to lose this. 🤷♀️
i tried to find the hard copies, I truly need these is there any way you could send them to me through messenger? My handle on messenger goes under Digster Mader. I would for ever be grateful to you. Thank you.
Deborah, when I first started your MMQ2022, after attempting one 2019 or so, I decided to look at everything that might help me. I always consider myself beginner even though I have been tinkering with quilting for about 5 years or so. The first video being this one, I thought to myself, ah, I don't need it... others tell me that the bias isn't necessary. OK... I decided to try it. YIKES! Great info... I guess when I get to the pathway for the calendar, I will have to do it... It looks extremely challenging to me... but I am here to learn. Looking forward to learning from the rest of your tutorials... I may be VERY late attempting to solve the 2022 murder. I never even made it to the crime scene in 2019's!
Thank you! Best continuous bias tape tutorial! Detailed and clear. I will be needing yards of bias tape for my next project and you make my life easy with this video. Thumbs up!
Thank you for posting this! I've only made bias tape once before for a sewing project and had found the putting piece by piece together and was not looking forward to a bigger project....until I found your video! I am going to make so much bias now and super fast and easy!! Thank you again!!
Thanks so much Deborah 🙏 You’re such a great teacher👏👍. Love how you “ting! ting! ting! “ like magic 😂😂 I enjoyed watching the video. Will now go and make my own continuous bias tape😊. You make a great primary school teacher. The kids will love you! 😍
Even though I'm an experienced sewist, I'm going to use newbeequilter's comment below. Drawing that extra 1/4-inch line is just so much more accurate. (Yes, my OCD for perfection is showing! 😐) But truthfully you don't need to be that accurate, you'll just cut the dogleg at the seem like she showed in the video and it works out because it's bias! Like magic! Who ever thought of this method deserves a Nobel Prize! ❤🌅🌵
Thanks a bunch! I didn't think I'd want to make my own B tape, but now it looks like fun and not so time consuming. Anyone who love geometry should enjoy doing this.
Wonderful explanation. I always wound up with the lines not matching....since I'm poor at math I thought it was me! I would cut them crooked to match....what a mess! I'd make it work but not satisfied. Now.....now I can be satisfied! Thanks for clearing up the mystery and giving me my confidence back!
Now that i've watched your video three times and all the way thru, I'm thinking that (if you have your serger out) you could do all that cutting with the serger but, without it being threaded. Boy, your video is really good, love the editing too. BTW, I get how you've positioned it for the initial first sewing, salvage to flipped other side. Those stripes really make it visually perceptible.
@@Whipstitch Why don't you just try it? You['ll be amazed at how much quicker it makes your work and maybe you could make a video of that too. I guess it's easy for me to say because I have an old serger which drove me nuts when trying to thread that lower looper, so instead of getting rid of it, I use for just this. Your video is stored in my Favorites, so thanks.
I just love how you explain the instruction. This is my 3rd piece of rhombus. However, I think I will finally get the continuous bias tape because you took time to explain it step by step-what NOT to do and what is the CORRECT WAY! Thank you....:)
Loved your tutorial, I must have watched 10 videos and your was the best, it made sense, and easy to follow, and finally today I was able to make a continuous bias tape, thank you so much for your generosity
Fantastic tutorial .... You have really given me the confidence to carry out my project ... I very much appreciated the time and effort you put into this video to show us how to do this ... Great work !!!!
At 12:22 you ask, "Does that make sense?" Well, yes it does; but it would make more sense to me if I drew a 1/4 inch line on both sides of the raw edges first. Then I could more easily see where to push my pins through instead of doing a kind of trial and error poking different places until I got it right where it should be. Maybe after I'd done it a few times I'd find it easier to skip drawing the line. But my first time (and maybe always?) I think I'll draw a 1/4 inch line from the raw edges. Ha! You're probably a more experienced eyeballing than I am. Thanks for doing this tutorial.
THANK YOU so much! I was SO confused! Your video was easy to follow and didn't make me feel dumb at all. I'm making a Christmas tree skirt with plenty of "firsts" for me. You video was awesomely helpful! Thanks again. I know who's videos I'll search for when I need help in the future!
THANK YOU!!! I've watched so many videos on how to do this and my brain was not comprehending... You made this video fun to watch and all though I still didn't get it right (I for some reason didn't have the dangly bits) I have confidence to try again in stead of scrapping the whole project!
This is fantastic! I've looked at other tutes on doing the bias tape this way but I wasn't clear on this. Great video, clear and I'm looking forward to trying it again. Thank you
Your work is so precise and neat, making it easy to follow you. The sound on my older computer is broken, but with the visuals and organization of this demo, it was not needed!
Thanks for this video. Your technique is the same as a book I am working though ("Stitch by Stitch"). I love the book so far, but the section for the continuous bias tape was confusing. It uses the same method you do, but I was just not getting it. Now I do! I also watched your video on how to use a bias tape maker. I love the kissy noises! :) They made me smile during the video.
Oh, that was _awesome!_ I didn't know there was a way to make bias tape without wasting a whole mess of fabric! And then whatever's left (other than the salvage itself) could be used to make a belt or something. ; )
Thank you so much for doing this video. Mine didn't quite work out exactly like yours. Mine was in strips. However, they were long strips and I was still able to make the material into bias tape.
I love love love this video...it is so clear and helpful! Looking forward to learning more sewing terminology and techniques from you ...so I subscribed! Blessings, E.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. It is the very best one I have viewed. I love how you present everything. You explain what you are doing and why it is necessary to do it that way. The video so much fun to watch. I love the kisses, the little comments, and your voice inflections. It is just a plain fun way to learn! I had my parallelogram cut done and the lines drawn, but I was scared to go any further because I didn’t understand the matching the lines before sewing the seam. Now that I understand it so well, I will be cutting the bias tape tomorrow morning. (I am using my bias tape for cording and it is really going to show so I need to do it right and with your help I will!) I hope it is okay that I have linked to your video on my website.
My bias tape turned out PERFECTLY thanks to you. I kind of made a little cut in it when I was cutting the spiral. I just wasn't careful . . . like you said to be! But I miscalculated the amount so I have plenty spare.
Don't forget that you can really make the insides of your garments neat and clean with custom bias binding to enclose the raw edges of your seams. Use a lightweight fabric in a contrasting shade or pattern with similar colors as your main fabric. A georgette, lawn, polyester, chiffon, etc. works very nicely for a professional, soft finish!😊
Loved your video and the lack of unrelated chatter. Is there a way to ensure the least amount of disruption to a continuous pattern when making bias tape? I mean matching stripes and geometrics at all of the seams so that it appears to truly be one continuous piece of binding.
Carmen Postulart Thanks for your kind words! The only way I know to do that is with stripes, which can be manipulated to match fairly well along the seam lines. I do that at the machine, as I stitch, by adjusting the placement as it goes under the needle. With a repeating pattern or dot I don’t know a way to match it perfectly along the diagonal, since most repeats are along a horizontal line-but it hardly ever shows without close inspection. I prefer a solid, stripe or check for bias tape, anyway!
Loved this presentation alot especially the fabric with those lines being used in the demo .... but I got lost at 12:00 on matchup. Will have to recheck this out and also try it myself.
So this I have bombed on multiple times. Your video is the best Ive seen so far. After the last bomb in this version Ive just been practicing (even this is a struggle as I am VERY new to sewing, only started to do surgical masks recently) the version connecting the ends of the strips. I've been practicing though and came upon your video and decided to try again. Just bombed again. The reason is....I have yards of fabric so no fat quarters. I measured a fat quarter as you said, 18x22. And when I cut the 1st bias line it came out all wonky and wouldn't fit the ends together right. I was like DANG IT! I can't even get this right??!! What the world! Soo....then I noticed it....I watched the video again to see what I did wrong....a fat quarter is 18" along the salvage line and 22" away from the salvage....I did the opposite. 😤😭😱😨😖😭 pray for my sanity 😂😝😘
Hi, Mickey! The CBT has to be cut in a single layer, but you *could* do it with a ruler rather than chalking the lines. I know some folks who cut theirs on the serger using the blade but no needle! Hope that helps, have fun!
I was looking for this method and on a different channel, one of the commenters pointed us to you. Boy am I glad! Thank you so much, I'm a total beginner and trying to learn from RUclips. You have been the easiest and most enjoyable to watch so far. I can't wait to do this. I hope I find lots more from you.
such an enjoyable way of getting to grips with making bias binding continuous. took me a couple of goes to get
co-ordinated but its such a time saver and saves a lot of frustration. Pat New Zealand
This is such a good tutorial that I even went to their website where it posted along with still pictures and a description of the steps. I printed that all off so I have it in hard copy too. Just in case the internet or RUclips decides to lose this. 🤷♀️
So glad you enjoyed it, Rebecca!! Thanks for watching!
i tried to find the hard copies, I truly need these is there any way you could send them to me through messenger? My handle on messenger goes under Digster Mader. I would for ever be grateful to you. Thank you.
I tried about 4 videos trying to get this down. Yours did the trick for me. You've got a new fan! Thank you.
Hooray!!! Listened to your video several times. After 3 times attempting to make CBT SUCCESS at last!! Excellent tutorial! Thank you!!
Thankyou for your tutorial. I knew this could be done, but i just had no success. You have made it so clear.
Wonderful video ! I finally understand the process. I've also watched many videos on how to do this and none were very clear!!
Thank you !😊
Deborah, when I first started your MMQ2022, after attempting one 2019 or so, I decided to look at everything that might help me.
I'm so excited to quilt with you this year, and really happy this series is helpful for you!! Can't wait to see what you'll make in 2022. :)
Jaime Carlton
Thanks so much Deborah 🙏 You’re such a great teacher👏👍. Love how you “ting! ting! ting! “ like magic 😂😂 I enjoyed watching the video. Will now go and make my own continuous bias tape😊. You make a great primary school teacher. The kids will love you! 😍
Excellent tutorial. I cannot wait to make the bias strips for 3 of my quilts I need to make binding for. Thank you 😊
Even though I'm an experienced sewist, I'm going to use newbeequilter's comment below. ❤🌅🌵
This is one of the best explanations of bias tape ever. Thank you for sharing!
yes, agreed!
+Nancy Wilke Thank you both so much!! I really do love making it--so pleased this was a useful video for you both! :)
I love, love, love your presentation! You are an awesome and engaging teacher! This is the best tutorial on this subject that I have ever seen.
Sending you HUGE Thanks from across The Pond - wonderful tutorial ... love the "ding! ding! 😊💝
Washiela Ratcliffe I’m so glad, Washiela!! 😊
Alice Crawford I’ve never tried this, but if you do I would love to know the results!!
I'm so glad!! Best wishes for beautiful bias tape!!
Thanks for doing this tutorial.
newbeequilter
Yep, need witnesses marks for sure.
I drew a line there too - it was very helpful!
I like your teaching style! Thanks for explaining it in detail and for taking the time to complete this tutorial.
WOW....love this. This is the best explanation I have seen. Simply great!
You’re so cute Deborah! You’re a great 👍 Fantastic teacher! Love the way you teach! You made it so easy and funny 😄! Thanks 🙏 lots
This was the best funnest is that a word, well it is now. Loved this video and now I’m looking for your book! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I watched someone else do this and couldn't get it. You made it so clear and so easy.
I'm so glad, Carolyn!! Have fun sewing!
Thank you very much, I just made about 10 meters of bias tape within 1 hour or so. Easy and efficient method.
You just saved me !!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Of the several continuous bias videos I viewed, yours made sense completely.
If I could give you 5 thumbs up I would. This is the coolest sewing have I've ever seen.
Thank you!! That made my day, I’m so glad it’s useful for you!! 😊
The BEST and very least confusing of all the videos I watched. Thank you so very much Deborah
Thank you, and your voice is beautiful, you sound like Doris Day, Que Sera Sera!!💜☺
This was sooo helpful! I was making bias tape for an apron using a pattern, and it did not explain this at all! Thank you! It worked out perfectly!
THANK YOU!!! I've watched so many videos on how to do this and my brain was not comprehending... You made this video fun to watch and all though I still didn't get it right (I for some reason didn't have the dangly bits) I have confidence to try again in stead of scrapping the whole project!
I figured out what I did wrong, I matched up the lines with themselves so instead of cutting a spiral, I was cutting rings..
Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial! I can't believe I waited so long to try this!
This is fantastic! I've looked at other tutes on doing the bias tape this way but I wasn't clear on this. Great video, clear and I'm looking forward to trying it again. Thank you
You’re an excellent instructor, thank you for this tutorial!!
Absolutely fabulous tutorial! I just finished making my first continuous tape. Thank you so much!
Explained very well indeed..best I’ve seen and I’m certainly going to be able to follow your clear instructions. Subscribed 👍
Really great demo of how to make continuous Bias Tape........5 star!
Brilliant, explained in so much detail it becomes easy to make.Thank you
Your work is so precise and neat, making it easy to follow you. The sound on my older computer is broken, but with the visuals and organization of this demo, it was not needed!
Thanks. I enjoyed watching you and I learnt it without any problems. You have a nice way of teaching!
I love this video!!! Your sound effects and the Can I get a Whaat... Love it.
Thanks for the tutorial. I done my first one just now watching you. You're great. 😁
I love love love this video...it is so clear and helpful! Looking forward to learning more sewing terminology and techniques from you ...so I subscribed! Blessings, E.
Thank you for this. I've watched a few others which are a tad long winded. Love the sound effects lol.
(I am using my bias tape for cording and it is really going to show so I need to do it right and with your help I will!)
I hope it is okay that I have linked to your video on my website.
+Kathy Rosen Absolutely, Kathy!! Please share away, and thanks so much for your kind words--made my day! :)
Yes, yes!! I love a Hong Kong finish or a clean, bound seam. So pretty!!
I have been using this method for years..... BUT never thought about that 1/4 inch offset !!! thanks!
This is the first time I have actually understood this. Using striped fabric helped.
MISTY Hiller You can do it!!!!
Could you fold this in half and cut with ruler instead of marking? 1.5 inches is not very wide to work with
Hi, Mickey! The CBT has to be cut in a single layer, but you *could* do it with a ruler rather than chalking the lines. I know some folks who cut theirs on the serger using the blade but no needle! Hope that helps, have fun!
