    This old video just popped up, as I’ve been desperately searching the internet for ways to eliminate hip pain caused by a fall seven months ago. I was getting depressed at how long it’s taking to heal (I’m 66, so I’m sure age is a factor). But hearing you say it could take 12 to 18 months to recover made me feel better. There’s an end game! I will continue to do PT (God, I hate split squats!) and remind myself daily that I will get better. Thanks for the insights and cause for hope. Oh, and a bedside manner tip I learned from my doctor that you may not be aware of; when you’re looking at a patient’s ultrasound and the patient is sitting right next to you but they’re not looking at the monitor because in tv shows this is where everything goes wrong, never blurt out, “Whoa, look at this! You fell hard!” That doesn’t really help. Thanks for this video.

      Lisa Gonzalez: I took a bad fall a month ago and my knees broke the fall. In my later years my knees have given me problems, coming from the days when I use to lift weights. I have had cortisone shots to my knees, which helped greatly and also once to my hips, the effects which didn't last that long. So after the fall the knees got better, but I guess from over compensating to keep my knees from hurting, the hips and the ball joint are now causing me really bad pain. I can hardly walk at home without having to hold on to the countertops and furniture. My NSAIDS have not helped any. So, now I'm considering a cortisone(s) shot again, but I've been putting it off. I too have heard that stretching helps. So, are there any specific exercises on RUclips that I could do to help alleviate the pain? I would truly appreciate some guidance! Thank you. -EB

    Got a cortisone injection yesterday in my hip. I was so surprised how quickly the pain disappeared. I still "feel" the sensation of discomfort, but no pain. I've had the pain for years but it's gotten worse the last year since I started my new job. Tried everything, physiotherapy, stretching, changing shoes, thinking how my posture is, how I walk - nothing helped. So I'm so thankful for the injection if it works long term with exercise. I've not presented as a "hip' to an ortho nurse practitioner, a PT or ortho PA. No hip involvement was suspected despite my age (73) and my obesity. They took a side view that caught more of my lower spine that only showed slight anterior slippage in the L4-L5. Since I had NO symptoms in my lower legs they just were stumped.However, when they took a front view x-ray of my hip they saw...and I saw...serious arthritis bilaterally. However, I have no signs of a hip problem. The doctors will not do a replacement...which I neither want or think I need...due to my weight, age and comorbidities. However...that is all they are focused on now---my hip.
    Your video was SUCH a gift to me. I can touch the pain with one finger...right over the trochanter. It radiates down the back of my thigh, across where the thigh and the buttocks connect and, on really bad days, across the top of my thigh in a downward angle...not towards the groin. And hearing how long it can take to heal, oddly, was a comfort to me. Everything I've read said 2-3 weeks. I was getting very discouraged. That helped tremendously. My PT had me biking...bad choice. I continue with as much movement as I can and I'm slowly losing weight the healthy way. That was a very, very long way of saying a GIANT Thank You to you both!!!!!!!!

    Thank you for your videos! I have particular interest in this one as I developed severe hip pains in the last four weeks. I had an x Ray and ultra sound. My GP said I have marked hip arthritis, but that the pain is most likely from Bursitis. That may be right, but there has been no pain or soreness in touching or pressing my hip and hip bone. No reddening or extra warm areas. The (severe) pain felt to me to be more internal.
    After my pressing him, my GP has reluctantly given me a referral to a Rheumatologist. The pain has lessened with less movement and pain relief.
    I have encountered this reluctance by GPs to refer to a specialist previously. It always seems a little unprofessional to me. More about their needs than mine!thanks again for your excellent videos. I have not seen anything quite like them before!

    I'm a fit 58 year old female and mt GP told me this morning I have greater trochanteric pain syndrome. My hip has been painful for months - can't lie on it, walking up or down steep hills aggrevated it. The GP has told me to think about the steriod injection but if I don't want to go through that I can contiinue taking the anti inflammatory tablets. Thank you Doctors for this information, I am now informed.

    Moving into 2024, I was just diagnosed with right hip bursitis. I was told to take Tylenol 3x day, prescription topical cream, referral to hospital for injection. Like you said, X-rays showed minimal arthritis. The only issue will be the very long wait for hospital appointment. Walking doesn’t always hurt more so after an hour or two. Sometimes I’m in severe pain when I get in the house. I just want to sit quietly with a coffee and leg resting on ottoman.

    Very informative video!! I've been dealing with bursitis in my right hip off and on now for a few years. I find it interesting that you talk about a clicking hip. I have always been able pop my hips in and out, more on the right though. It's more of something you can feel rather than hear. I used to do it a lot as a teenager because people got a kick out of it. How do you treat a clicking hip and could this be a reason why my hip seems to stay aggravated? I have hyper mobility in my hips, fingers, toes and spine.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 лет назад +8

      Hi Melissa. The clicking is often related to the tight band snapping over your greater trochanter. It often has no specific solution however if you are able to stretch out the fascia sometimes the snapping will reduce. Hope that helps. And thanks for watching.

  • @449ste33
    @449ste33 5 лет назад +1

    Yes, avoid surgery to remove the bursa at all costs. There are better ways to treat this as they state; physio therapy and anti inflammatory meds.
    It’s a fairly long road back though but you will get there.
    In my case I believe the bursa trouble occurred due to gluteal muscle weakness around the hip. Physio to strengthen can work wonders. Thanks for your helpful video guys

    I am 69 and did have a clicking right hip after doing a roundhouse kick in my late 30s. No problem until last summer when I was really pushing myself in many ways. Then over the course of a few days my hip bursa hurt to the point that there was no position I could get in without a stabbing pain. I ended up getting driven to a minute clinic while holding my right side off the seat and hobbled in with trekking poles and stayed standing to be seen. Steroids, muscle relaxants, stretching and a heat pad slowly got me back on my feet. After 10 months of daily stretching and exercise I am almost back to my old self but can still feel the bursa at times waiting for me to push it too far. It was a crippling experience.

    16 years of power yoga, restorative yoga, Anusara yoga…5-6 days a week and 40 lb. maintained weight loss. Then COVID hit and I am not self-motivated and had no real place where I could do yoga in my house. So I was walking 3-5 miles every day. I now have osteoarthritis of the hip and have done PT …definitely tight IT band and osteoarthritis in my back for decades that is now giving me sciatica! I am not even 60 … I am at my wits end as to what to do and am in so much pain. Planning for hip injection in January but now am wondering if I should do it. Celebrex has done so much more for me than Aleve… such a tough decision. I would get major hip problems through my yoga years…such a dilemma.

    My doctor told me last week that what I have had for years is bursitis. It hurts to run my finger down the side of my leg (lumpy under skin) and especially to press on actual bursa. I don't get groin pain or trouble getting off chairs etc but I don't sleep well. The pain wakes me. I sleep on the affected side and can't sleep on the other side due to impingement in spine that causes nerve pain in foot and charley horses on the unaffected side. I have bad reactions to cortisol. Memory foam on my bed made it worse. I have mild osteoporosis on affected side. I'm at a loss. I am losing weight through diet and I walk as much as I can but stenosis in low back and scheuermann's disease with all its' complications can be aggravated. Been in constant pain for 45 years.

    I was diagnosed with hip bursitis, but it didn’t hurt to touch or lay on that side. In fact laying on the opposite side to the pain is far worse. Also
    Walking after 15 mins I feel pain in that area if I keep walking it will become excruciating painful and hurt down side of leg to side of knee. The amazing thing is when I cycle it doesn’t hurt at all. I do 140klm a week and no pain. Have I been miss diagnosed? Could the problem be coming from lower back/ discs. I am 60 yrs not overweight. Exercises work to some extent in that I feel stronger but the pain doesn’t go away. There is some minor osteoarthritis in lower back.

      I shouldn’t be so quick to say it’s bursitis. It might be tendinitis. Right hip was replaced on April 13, 2022, anterior approach. The moment I woke from anesthesia I was in excruciating skyrocketing pain, crying and sobbing. I wound up in hospital 4 days and rehab 12 days due to poor pain management. Truly horrifying. Surgeon had one word for my case: Unique. I had my second hip replaced by a different surgeon and anesthesiologist on September 20, 2022. Easy peasy! The second anesthesiologist got permission to give me a nerve blocker and maybe that’s the difference that made the difference because my pain was minimal compared to the first experience. The second surgeon is taking over my entire case including the first hip. If physical therapy does not improve whatever is going on with the soft tissue of my right hip I will see the surgeon and go from there. I’m walking great but my endurance is not there because the right hip area starts to get inflamed and swollen and then my IT band tightens up. It really hurts. Hopefully, things will be resolved in time. I would like to add that I just turned 68 and otherwise in good health. Not on prescription medication for anything. No smoking, no alcohol, no recreational drugs. I gave up all my sugary junk food and desserts over a year ago. Sugar causes inflammation. I am a reformed sugar addict. I gradually lost over 30 pounds and I’d like to lose at least 10 more. Feeling good.

    I have hip pain that occurred after lifting weights, specifically deep squats with 160 lbs barbell across my shoulders/upper back. x-ray shows arthritis and MRI revealed iliopsoas bursitis and tendinitis as well as mild to severe arthritis. I do CrossFit workouts with a senior group. My doctor has given me two cortisone shots 7 weeks apart that helped against pain but each for only about 24-36 hours. I'll see my doctor in 5 more weeks. He has discussed gel shots and we've even talked about hip replacement down the line. Meanwhile, I'd love the pain in the bursa area to slow down a bit. It has persisted for three months and it is intense. I can live with taking it easy in workouts but walking, getting into and out of the car, and sleeping isn't going well. Is there a sunset on the pain I can reasonably expect or at 71 is this the end of golf and biking?

    Thanks docs you make very relatable and informative vids. I appreciate the information.
    Going for a THA June 22 and also have bursitis in same hip. Can’t take NSAIDs due to CKD stage 3. This makes pain tough to manage. Would like to know stretching that would help bursitis after THA. For sure I will bring it up with surgeon and see what I am allowed to do in PT. Already doing gluteal squeezes and the other 3 exercises from your other video to prepare for Surg. Thanks to you both.

    Hi Docs, My name is Laura, I had a Labral tear in my right hip (from a fall at 43 in 2009) was diagnosed alongside the tear with hip dysplasia. Had a PeriAcetabular Osteotomy. 1-year post-surgery as a result of the reconstruction my pelvic broke in half, nonunion fracture of the Ischium and Pubis bones. 2 years to heal from that. All has left me with years of debilitating pain in my hips, I was diagnosed with hip bursitis, did therapy, massage, and Ibuprofin. Ibuprofin works, but when I stop taking it, the pain comes back. I worry about being on Ibuprofin indefinitely and the damage that could cause. Still the chronic pain, almost burning feeling in my muscles surrounding the area keeps me from being active. I used to be a distance cyclist and a kayak guide. These days I'm lucky if I can do a grocery run by myself. My surgeon did not want to do cortisone injections, he told me they probably would not work. I can relate to being positive I was bone on bone only to find out I still had plenty of cartilage in my hip. I have slowly stopped doing most activities now. I just can't find a solution out there for me, this has been going on for 8 years now. I did think getting hip replacements would finally fix this. Because of my dysplasia, I will need my hips replaced but just the thought of having bursitis even after the replacements is disheartening, to say the least. I am located in Michigan, if you know of a therapy that might work and I haven't tried, I would appreciate it greatly.

      Hi Laura. So sorry to hear about the difficult path you have been on . Dysplasia can be tricky and with bursitis on top of that, it is a difficult problem. If you have groin pain, that typically means more of the pain is from the joint whereas if your pain is on the side, that is more likely to be bursitis. Two things that you may want to consider would be an intra-articular injection of cortisone or possibly hyaluronic acid which may help with groin pain. Sometimes injections for bursitis will also help but usually just cortisone. As well, you can try a topical preparation to reduce the inflammation and possibly reduce your need for advil. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

    Any thoughts on shockwave therapy? I'm doing that and I'm quite sceptical.
