    In the past three years, my husband and I gradually changed our diets according to what you have mentioned. He had gout and RA and PMR. We no longer (2 yrs) drink alcohol. He has lost 60+ lbs. (now 200lbs, 6’), no gout, RA, PMR. Walks 12+ miles at a time. No more inflammation. Please people believe it. He is 79, I, 77. You don’t have to feel old just because you have a high number age.

      I'm 76 and regularly (4-5x a week) jog 4 or 5 miles, plus 30 min calesthenics, to kick off my active days. I agree with everything except pairing red meat with processed meat (and then focussing on nitrates). For years I have eaten a mostly home-cooked keto diet free of sugars, grains, starches, seed oils, and alcohol. I do better eating quality beef than poultry.

    2. Trans fat
    3. REFINED carbs (glycemic index spikes)
    4. Alcohol (sorry!)
    5. Red and Processed Meats (AGE)
    6. Vegetable and Seed Oils (too many omega 6’s)
    Runners up:
    Gluten
    Nightshades (these are okay, no proof that they cause inflammation)

      Seed oil and vegetable oils in moderation aren't inflammatory according to this nutrition scientist.

      Some people might be sensitive to nightshades.
      Try removing them from your diet temporarily to see if you are one of them.
      There is a video from the Nutritionfacts channel that gave evidence to that effect, but I can't find it to give the link.

      People with a genetic variant of MTHFR are more sensitive to inflammation from nightshades due to the alkaloid solanine, which is the inflammatory chemical in nightshade vegetables . This can be tested in a simple blood test by Labcorp. Blueberries also have solanine, the inflammatory chemical in the nightshade family. Eating blueberries every morning led to finger stiffness for me, which went away when I stopped eating blueberries every morning.

    Great great ! Video. As a doc myself , I have recommended these same suggestions. I luckily got to live overseas as part of my childhood, in Europe and it is so easy to eat healthy. There are so many good things to eat. So many ways to prepare delicious vegetables and fruits with lean protein such as fish,chicken, turkey, and limited beef. It’s in the last 30-35 years that here in the USA, the large food industries have contaminated our ideas and force feed people. When I was in Jr high and HS, when we had a dance or other social activity , THERE WAS NO FOOD! It was great. We knew to eat before the activity and then go and enjoy the activity not go to eat. In the late 70s-80s , during the disco era in college, we would go dancing and not eat because we ate before going out. I feel food is the focus for all activities. Also, the style was to be thin , not huge.

      Sensible quantities of fruit? Eat as much fruit as you want. It’s packed full of vitamins and antioxidants, and contains fiber, which greatly reduces the absorption of naturally occurring sugar. People think you should limit fruit because of sugar, but that’s not true because it’s a different process than eating added sugar in a processed food item like candy or crackers.

    Starting small is still better than not starting at all. I was eating a LOT of red meat, fried/baked potatoes, and white corn. Now I eat more salmon, shrimp, chicken, pork and lamb instead. I still can't resist a deal on tri-tip or ribeye steaks so I generally share those meals with my son and my dog who craves red meat protein-so I'm not stuck eating the whole thing by myself. Pasta is probably the hardest thing to cut out of my diet so I've been trying to rotate in cabbage and onions sautéd in avocado oil, oven baked sweet potato and yam fries lightly coated with avocado oil garlic and pepper. Lots of sautéd squash. I also found that whole grain brown rice isn't so bad. I'm also a big mac and cheese fan. Does anyone know if the whole grain wheat pastas are worth the substitution or are they almost as bad for inflammation as the regular pasta? Baked potatoes are maybe once a week instead of 3 times a week. Red meat once or twice a week instead of 4-5 times a week. Trying to reduce down to once or twice a month. When my son is staying with his mom, I live on salads though I know dressings are high in dairy fats and/or sugar so I try to go light...like I'm dressing the salad in underwear instead of an entire outfit.

    There’s a lot of nitrates in vegetables too, but nobody seems to think it’s a problem. As far as red meat goes, we’ve cut our consumption in half over the past few decades and there’s been a proliferation of chronic diseases.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 года назад

      Hi Bryan. Natural nitrates are safe and are found in vegetables and red meat. The nitrates added to processed meat is the problem. And less meat consumption is obviously not the cause of chronic disease. If you look at the areas of the world where people live the longest - blue zones - they eat very little meat. But it is still always your choice to eat whatever you want. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    Love listening to you two Docs and the rapport that you have with both each another and your audience. You're never judgemental, only helpful. Must say that everything you said in this video, I can prove correct. I was a 35 year vegetarian and thought I was healthy. It wasn't until three years ago when I went vegan that my arthritis cleared up completely, my blood pressure dropped to 80/50 and my quality of life went through the roof. At 69, I'm now running at least a mile a day, climbing ladders like a 25 year old and dropped from 140 pounds down to 100 pounds (I'm 5'1"). Best thing I ever did for my body and psyche. Are you assuming the red meat is conventionally raised? Have you done any studies on grass fed beef?

      Hi Shawn. There are lots of studies on grass fed beef. It doesn’t make as much difference as everyone would hope. Red meat just isn’t good for you. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    Drinking Green and Black tea helps along with more water to reduce inflammation.
    I've cut red meat out the last month. For me it's seemed to help.
    I never bought into tomatoes being a real issue. I'd be crawling if they were.
    Thanks for sharing

    Potatoes, Red and Green, and yellow peppers, pork. Beef in small portions may be okay, but better to eat fish or chicken, or turkey. I have chronic pain and I get some relief by eliminating the aforementioned foods from my diet.

    Thanks for the wonderful videos and educational info. I'm evidence that people can change their tastes and the foods they enjoy. I grew up in the country with lots of garden vegetables, but also lots of beef. My family became vegetarian 20 years ago, and step by step we have changed the way we eat. In the beginning, we were eating "whites" but as our tastes lightened up, we explored more brown rice, whole grains, etc. Now we don't crave or even think about eating those foods. You learn that when you do decide to "splurge" and eat them, you don't feel good. It definitely becomes easier and easier to eat healthy because the cause and effect is crystal clear.

      My husband and I have had the same experience as you. The more we change to unprocessed fresh food (brown rice, whole grain stuff), the better we feel. And, we pay a stiff price when we “go off plan.”

    It took me years to figure out my inflammation, joint pain, and erythema nodosum was caused by my omega 3 and omega 6 ratio being out of whack. I figured this out with elimination diets. I have since increased my omega 3 index and get it tested regularly to keep the inflammation down and my omega index correct.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  Год назад

      Yes omega 6 can be very bad. Mostly in processed foods and certain oils. Way to go. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    Great Canadian docs and excellent topics. Time to bring on Dr. Robert Lustig (not Canadian but should be an honorary Canadian) and Dr. Jason Fung. Food is medicine. It always was, and only now are we fully appreciating how much we got wrong and how much we can do to improve our health.

    I imagine diets are different for everyone. I gave up all plants and only eat beef (yes red meat) and chicken and fish/shrimp, butter, bacon. Finally after 20 yrs have a normal a1c, no more arthritis, rashes, acid reflux, no more pre hypertension and I lost 41 pounds. I know it’s not for everyone but your diet almost killed me. It’s nice to have options for different body types.
