      We used to have to get its from books, and then, as now, it isn’t always accurate or complete.
      Always surprising that so many people have a jaundiced view of medicine and yet believe politicians who overtly and obviously lie to them. Something to ponder.

      Medicine is an empirical science, politics is not. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I do have a "jaundiced' view of medicine because mainstream medicine has written prescriptions (the majority of which created more problems than I began with) for me but never helped me with any physical problem other than an occasion infection. I have always had to resort to figuring out symptoms and cures for myself and these podcasts are a huge help!@@Patriot1789

      Yeah if you believe the part about swallowed air being the first cause you already know you’re in the wrong place for practical advice.
      Plants and fiber fermenting in the gut causes IBS. Nuts, seeds, legumes…all of it will cause gas and bloating. Only animal foods by themselves will get rid of IBS.

    I was diagnosed with IBS in my early 20s and I'm now almost 60. My symptoms have gradually got worse and it's so soul destroying.
    I've been a vegetarian for 12 years and eaten a very healthy diet. After doing research I recently reluctantly decided to remove all the healthy beans, lentils, legumes from my diet, anything fermentable and I've started eating chicken and tuna. After only a week I feel better than I have in years. Normal bowel movements, no diahorrea anymore, bloating gone, and my chronic anxiety is way better. Some healthy foods do not necessarily agree with your stomach.

      There are loads of supposedly "healthy" foods I have to avoid. Onions (especially raw), citrus fruits, berries, coarse fibres (eg bran flakes).
      Ground flax seeds really help me - I have one tablespoon every day on my cereals.
      My symptoms are more or less under control while I stick to these rules and avoid alcohol.

      As a vegetarian if you eat dairy and gluten, that will not help. Your solution is to prefer cardiovascular disease and cancer over symptomatic relief of IBS.

      I had diarrhea all the time and unexpectedly for many many years. I could not leave the house without knowing where every restroom was where I needed to go. I started taking a Probiotic and it has been a miracle pill for me. It’s called “Align” and it’s for Gut Health and Feminine Health. It says it on the box. I take it daily and it will be two years in March.

    In my experience, 'Emotion' is the key factor for IBS. Diet plays a part, and getting on a diet, that delivers the least amount of winda fn irritation... But Emotions (anxiety, over excitement, unhappiness, worry for others, lack of social interaction, fears, loneliness, lack of reward) and the gut connection to it

    After struggling with IBS for over 25 years, discovering the low-FODMAP diet was a life changer! My gut health improved almost overnight and also my anxiety. I know anxiety can trigger IBS attacks, but I think-in my case-anxiety was triggered by my poor gut health.

      I cure it with a diet of white rice, vegetables, meat , fish, bananas , I think oats, stopped milk for a while, had soy milk. Reintroduced some brown rice, and a little milk with coffee.

      Had the same exact revelation. I tried fixing my gut-issues with fodmap, ended up curing my panic anxiety as well. Rarely ever have attacks anymore, but even a miniscule amount of garlic will trigger it

    My mother had IBS which started at about 65 years of age, I spent years persuading her to use Organic and I set her up with a organic delivery direct from the farm to her every month, her IBS disapeared after about three months of only eating Organic foods.

    Also want to comment on what our lives are like when all of a sudden we have to go to the bathroom with no warning and nothing can stop it. It comes on like a freight train and is so embarrassing. If anyone else has experienced this we know this is no joke

    I've always assumed I had IBS because of constant and real bad diarrhea. However I have never suffered from abdominal pain. My bowel movements would fluctuate from diarrhea for about 5 days to constipation for about 5 days and that cycle continued for a couple of years. At thas time I weighed roughly 230lbs and I've gradually reduced to it's present level of 190 lbs. I very rarely have any issues now because of a dietary change. Gone are the pasta dishes, cereals, dairy from cow milk, processed foods. I now consume loads of greens, low sugar content fruits, grass fed meats and fermented foods like kefir and saurkraut. The cheese I eat now is sheep or goat milk cheese. I also eat a lot of nuts, brazil and pumkin nuts, prunes and figs. The change in diet has been a life saver.

      I have the exact same symptoms and also there's no mucus in my poop. Gas, bloating and burping are other symptoms. Although there's no fixed days of my cycle as in your case it's five days. For 1-2 days I got without pooping too. Did you diagnose with IBS? Or is it something else?

      @@amritasahu2023 I was never diagnosed with IBS however one of my doctors suggested I could have IBS. But he never actually recorded it in my notes. As of today I have not had any symptoms of IBS for about 6 months now. My stools are solid and I consider them to be normal. It's possible my IBS was caused by poor bile production. Perhaps I have low acid volumes in my stomach. Anyway, I take apple cider vinegar daily, 12000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily, fermented foods, gut friendly microbes and leafy greens like kale and the odd cup of spinach. I eat lots of liver and oily fish. Also ginger, garlic, radish, turmeric, black pepper and cacao drinks.

    I have it all the time. It simply is an inability of the brain and colon to have a congenial conversation about what the colon needs to have happen. Somewhere along the nerve pathway the conversation is either dropped...or becomes combative. If anyone can control it...that's wonderful...I have never been able to keep it from ruling my life. I have always wondered how people can plan a day or an activity. When someone asks me when I can do something I never have any idea when I can do anything. I have to ask my colon.

      @@kutatm boy...me too...and my body gets kicked out of parasympathetic peristalsis even for the positive things that cause positive stress...my intestines want to live like a little old lady in a very dull and predictable environment...every time my body ventures a tiny step out of its rigid little comfort zone...it thinks it doesn't know how to poop. I challenge myself to have fun....but boy i pay to play.

      If you feel that the IBS is primarily caused by anxiety please ask your doctor about a Bentil / Dicyclomine prescription (I may have spelled it wrong..) I got put onto it recently and have definitely noticed some improvement in that it calms my nerves (and stomach etc) down- though still suffering from some days of bad IBS (hence being back on this video for more ideas..) but it did seem to calm me down when going out and about with others…. I hope and pray for you to find relief.

      Calm your vagus nerve. Everything has to do with your nervous system. I had bad symptoms because of anxiety. Ear ringing, fatigue, digestive, chest pain. 1 Remove stress from your life 2 dont take too many pills, let your body heal itself. Quit smoking and drinking. Practice a sport at least 30 min or 1 h a day and most important I would say is start praying. Being an orthodox christian was the best thing I could do. 4 months ago I was a wreck, couldn t drive my car, ride a bike, even walking was hard and now I can say I am 98 % healed. Aside from some mild digestive problems I am fine and I am confident that in a month from now, maximum, I will be 100% healed. So this is a everyday fight, keep it up, don't give up, have faith, sleep enough, drink clean water and natural teas, have patience its not going to heal overnight because you havent got to this stage overnight. Maybe it was months or years of stress and bad habits. I lost a childhood friend,I suffered alot, 7 months later I got into a car crash, broke some bones, phisically I recovered in record time but mentally I was a mess until a few months ago when I changed my mindset. Be brave and may Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on you all!

      @@saltoftheearth8358 Agreed, i have tried my best but after almost nine years and getting it down and up and down and up, though even the times i can sort of get rid of it, it has always come back with a vengeance. What you say about praying is also very true, i am not religious but medically and by looking at scans of the brain, praying is a form of meditation and meditaion and hypnotherapy are a great way of treating symptoms! So prayer works wonders, and to anyone thinking they have to be religious to get this benefit, you do not. You can simply pray to just something or nothing and there is actual scientific proof that this gives the same benefits of meditation and religious prayer cause you are in hand giving out yourself and what ails you out of yourself. So prayer is a great tip salt of earth! :D
      I had it as a child then a couple years of and it came back and i have been completely unable to do all the things you say many times, i will also say it can come back, it is lifelong. So keeping up the good strategies after you have treated yourself is also key!

    Thank you for this very informative video on IBS. A Dr like you, would have been a blessing to see! I wouldn't have had to suffer for as long as I did, (17 years). Was diagnosed with IBS-D after all test couldn't find anything conclusive. A friend told me about what Naturopathic Dr do, so I made an appointment with a Naturopathic Dr who found the cause and from there I was able to get the necessary medical treatment. Today I am pain free, side debilitating cramps gone and very very minimal diarreah now.

    This is incredible, the most accurate description of IBS. For years i been dealing with IBS-C, i had to completely change the way i eat. For me, i can't find fried foods, no dairy, and no fat-free cheese. I really niss that, i dont eat sweets. But i still get occasional constipation and bloating, i cant eat anymore rice. Its difficult for me, so niw i eat soups, lentils, ground turkey, ground chicken, fruits and vegetables, i use to not be able to eat oat meal, i can now but even oat meal gives me slightly constipation

    I’ve had IBS for 12 years. I’m 56 now. I believe stress triggered it, but since I’ve been on a carnivore diet. My IBS is gone. I was hopeful, but didn’t really believe this could ever go away. About 2 months into this diet, it seemed like it was going away. I was excited, but still skeptical. Well 5 months into the carnivore diet, and my IBS is gone. ! I have no affiliations, or sponsorships. I just wanted this gone, and I started this diet in hopes of improving my IBS. Also lost weight, and feel better as a happy side effect. Same stress levels, so that’s interesting.

    I was diagnosed with IBS in my early 60s, 10 or 12 years ago. A lot of tests ruled out anything else, and it was decided the IBS had been triggered by a compylobacter infection. It's got better over the years, but is still triggered by some foods - tomatoes, mushrooms, chocolate, and anything with a lot of sugar. It doesn't stop me eating those things, but I'm just careful not to eat them to excess. Another thing that can bring on an attack these days is stress, and that's harder to cut out of life than certain foods!

      Have you ruled out gastritis? Tomatoes, and chocolate, are very acidic and can trouble the stomach. I find bell peppers in addition to these foods irritate my bowel. Supplementing with butyrate helped me. Just a thought.

      I think you have nailed it. There are breath tests to identity carb intolerance and antibiotics which kill these bacteria. Evidence based medicine is the way forward.

    I had IBS for years or so the doctor told me. I recently did my own little experiments and found out I am in fact coeliac. Very dangerous not to be testing people with the symptoms I had. I don’t eat gluten now and my bouts of extreme pain, vomiting and diarrhoea and virtual unconsciousness have stopped. I was often at the point where I didn’t want to live any more because of the incredible pain I suffered. I have had 4 children and would have 4 more rather than go through that pain.

      I was told I had IBS for years and eventually got a coeliac diagnosis - changed my life! I still have to be careful of having too much alcohol and dairy (because IBS can go hand in hand with coeliac disease) & for whatever reason I can't eat meat at all without also getting incredibly ill (but I haven't eaten any since I was a child because of that so it doesn't phase me) but cutting out gluten made so much difference it was like I was a new person!
      It is worth noting that if you suspect coeliac disease a blood test (which is what you will be offered) is not the most reliable way of getting a diagnosis (it is hit and miss as you have to have a lot of gluten in your system for it to register) so a biopsy is really needed to confirm the diagnosis.

      Dr's add too quick to apply thr ROME criteria. Our friend was told by 3 hospital Dr's he had IBS, I told him I was certain it wasn't. He died of bowel cancer less than a year later 😢

      ​@@sarahtrew3314that's not very unusual... Meat can make symptoms worse for some people.... Like it did for me and my uncle (he had to live off of rice and potatoes with a bit of mung bean dal for 4-5 months... )
      I'm a vegan but he wasn't... He still isn't...he is flexitariam... Completely off of meat and dairy.. only a bit of fish... Has introduced most of the veggies and fruits ... Still limits his bean intake (except mung beans , lentils and chickpeas or butter beans)

    I was diagnosed IBS 35 years ago. 10 years ago I realized I was celiac. I am 100% fine after removing gluten, dairy and sugar.

    Posting this here in the hopes that it will help someone. I have had IBS for the longest time. Went to a Gastro who helped me diagnose the issue as Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). It was diagnosed by process of elimination (I was literally negative for everything else). MCAS was only named in 2007. Most doctors don't even know about it. And those who do, know next to nothing as it is so new that there is almost no research on it. They can't even test for it as there is no test.
    I am now on an asthma medication because it's side effect helps my issue, and an antihestimine. It's been life changing. Almost no more abdominal cramps and GERD! I used to get scared of fibre because it would mess me up. Now I have a treatment I'm eating a Zoe diet and loving it!

    I have IBS and find that using IBgard which are peppermint oil capsules really help. Also since it is related to my stress and anxiety I do the breathing and also tapping. As I tap the points I say - I add empowered, I am strong, I am loved, although I am anxious, although I have pain, I choose to relax and I love and accept myself. I sit in a quiet room and do that for 10 minutes and then I am more relaxed with a lot less pain.

    I suffered gi problem for 18 years, having knife stabbing pain in the epigastric area, so, so, so many tests which showed nothing, gall bladder taken out, and many different diets. I was on and off, FODMAP, gluten, dairy and many other things. The trauma I have is from all the pain. Then, after 15 years, I came across someone with my symptoms and went to a Vascular Surgeon. I was diagnosed with Neurogenic Mals. I had open surgery to cut the Mesenteric ligament back to the spine and Celia Plexus resection. My horrific epigastric pain was gone but with nerve damage, I am still having lots of digestive problems. Please, please, if you have a patient with chronic epigastric pain, check for vascular compressions. It could save someone’s life. Thanks.

    Not so, i am unable to manage ibs for the past 10 years. It has ruined my life and i am unable to travel, go to get togethers with friends and almost losing my job presently. My g.i. saids i have nothing showing in my last colonoscopy which is good but this has taken control over my life. Im at the end of my rope. Along w my anxiety issues.

      @@vadimchernov7577 at times yes, and acid reflux, I understand that there are certain foods to be eliminated which I have put aside but I also get palpitations at times, my cardiologist said I need to lose weight, which I am aware and I am trying. I dont do McDonalds anymore and I wont do fast food if I can help it.

      @@anandv5574 urination follows when I defecate, I've been taking immodium on my own, no dr suggested, and this works sometimes not all of the time, my anxiety level supercedes it.

    i have IBS and eliminating dairy and gluten was the best decision i made. it doesn’t mean i am cured. i think a lot of factors also contribute like stress hormones but a the elimination works a lot to remove a big chunk of the pain

    I've had IBS-D for close to 10 years and I'm now 71 years old. I have managed to get the stomach pain symptoms under control. Even the bowel symptoms have improved but they are less consistently improved. I have not strictly adhered to the low-FODMAP diet, but I have stayed away from spicey foods and garlic and take some kind of probiotic. The probiotics have included a variety of the probiotic tablets but over the past year or two I have replaced tablets with daily Kefir with my meals. I have also found that I usually can get my stomach pain under control by breathing exercises....and that is by taking deep and slow breaths and pushing out my stomach on inhales and slowly exhaling and relaxing the stomach when exhaling. I continue to drink coffee and alcohol but in very reduced quantities. Three or four cups of coffee per week and the same frequency of an alcoholic beverage per week.
    Also, before the IBS was diagnosed, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and have often wondered whether or not that could have contributed to or even caused the IBS.

    I was working out, all grit and determination. Then I heard "Irritable bowel syndrome sounds like an 80s rock band", dropped the weight and had to take a minute to recover from the laughter. 10/10, Jonathan. Got me.     Stress and anxiety were the main triggers for me it was when I started a very stressful job. I quit but sadly I got an even more stressful job after that and it didn't help that it was far away from family and friends.

    I was diagnosed in my 30’s. I felt like I was in labour on a regular basis. I had no quality of life. I was afraid to drive anywhere, in case I needed the toilet. I ended up having to have an hysterectomy as this was recommended as I was told it was hormone related. I still get pain but not as often. I find a connection with my migraines. I always know when I am going to have pain. I have a migraine and feel exhausted beforehand.

    Thank you for this discussion. I went through over 5 years of IBS-D type symptoms but was never diagnosed with it. However, I eventually did figure out that I have some severe intolerances to chocolate, soybean/canola oils and wheat as well as gastritis caused by a medication I was on. I still struggle with gas and bloating, so there’s probably more going on but at least the diarrhea is gone. Obtaining a healthy gut can be really complicated but it does help to avoid processed foods and cook from scratch whenever possible.

    I was diagnosed decades ago. Had THE best doctor rest his soul. He told me to write down everything I ate & when I got sick. He said the colon goes into a spasm and is caused by stress - and - or certain foods or combinations. Sure enough, it turned out to be either cooked dairy, or dairy ( like a glass of milk ) with cooked meats and started a new job far away in the middle of winter and the commute was a nightmare. He's right - I know people with IBS whom have sensitivity to brassicas, especially broccoli.
    Librax was the best medication and knocked it right out, but I changed my diet since then for the bettter.

    I have had bowel trouble/fatigue for years - Colonoscopies showed bowel damage likened to... but not Crohns ....at last in my late 50's I was diagnosed with severe pernicious aneamia ...my diahoeara was still present even after I felt better with B12 injections - I found out about IBS in a chance chat with the GP after a dramatic all nighter in the loo and she advised the FODMAP diet - which worked.... ...I still have to restrict my diet but am gradually adding more things back in - but.... watching your video's I was convinced that I needed Kefir - the results have been dramatic and I have not had a terrible time since I started adding kefir to my breakfast regime... Thank you

    I had IBS. I went to the doctor and he laughed at me took my money and sent me home saying I was imagining things. I proceeded to go on an elimination diet giving up all bread, grains etc for a while, then giving up milk and dairy. I then reintroduced everything one by one. My IBS I would say was 100% caused by white bread, milk intolerance (which was gotten rid of and the re-introducing so I was fine after) and a lack of natural fibre (from something like rocket plants etc) and then taking multivitamins with minerals and iron!! I have never had it since unless I eat alot of white bread with no fibre! Great podcast!❤

      For me sourdough bread is a game changer. After just one week my bowel movements became daily (sometimes twice) and well shaped. I am in the process of eliminating dairy which I find difficult because I like cheese and yoghurt but can't handle it. Also I don't combine proteins with carbs anymore. I eat those with vegetables and it has made a huge difference. I eat salads with bread for lunch everyday.

      @@Violet._.PhoeniX Probably because sourdoughbread ik kinda predigested. During the very long fermentation gluten breaks down, not 100% but stil. The same goes for other fermented foods. So I think you give your gi a helping hand. But saying that your stomach hurts everyday maybe it's a good idea to go to the doctor's first. Greetings.

    My IBS is highly responsive to the Monash low FODMAP diet, and I recommend people with IBS try that diet to help identify trigger foods. I know which are the worst trigger foods for me now and can avoid or limit intake of those. My gut reacts very dramatically to the sugar alcohols that constitute sugar substitutes in sugar free sweets. I feel ill after eating around 5 or so and they have a horrible laxative effect. If you react badly to sweeteners such as sorbitol, mannitol and maltitol, definitely consider FODMAP sensitivity as a significant factor in your IBS.

    Thank you for this video. My experience was slightly different than what you describe but nothing other than microscopic colitis has been diagnosed. I have been aware that stress does have an effect. The illness does produce considerable stress I will say.

    People are falling apart is my conclusion. Everyone trying to figure out what perfectly healthy food they need to avoid to not be in pain. That is so crazy. We need to figure out how to be able to eat healthy foods again. What has happened to the human gut?

      What happened is we stopped eating our natural diet which for millions of years consisted mostly of meat. Same thing would happen if you put a tiger on a grain diet for example.

    IBS C here. It started with me as a child but I didn’t get a diagnosis until I was in my 30s. When I was a child all the doctors told my parents that I was just looking for attention. I remember they put me in the hospital for a week and did every test you could think of and everything came up negative. So they told my parents I was just looking for attention and they treated me as such. I was so happy when I finally got my diagnosis and was able to tell my family that I was not making it up that I was really suffering. I would rather break both of my legs, then have a flareup. It puts me in excruciating pain. I should add that I’m in my 60s now so back in the 60s and 70s. I don’t think they really knew much much about IBS.

      I'm in my 70's now, was diagnosed in my late 20's. Both sides of my family had severe gut issues, so thankfully I wasn't told I was seeking attention 😅. I have lived with IBS my whole life, but nothing prepared me for the pain I'm experiencing now and for the last 1½yrs. I had a bad flare up that hasn't stopped, lost 65lbs and can barely eat. The Drs don't have a clue as to what is happening. I totally feel for you ❤️, and certainly understand where you're coming from 👍☺️! Good luck 🤞🍀 to you 🍀🙏💚🙏.

    What worked wonders for me: I wasn’t sure if I had SIBO or IBSD
    -Beans and rice and pasta (or whatever foods you can tolerate best), then adding one new food a day to see how you react after a few weeks
    -ultrainflammix protein powder to make sure ur getting nutrients (aka “elemental diet”) specially made for sensitive bellies
    -fermented foods , a couple bites before each meal (kimchi, raw soukrout)
    -Boswellia at each meal (250mg-400mg) helps with inflammation
    -I am 95% better from 10 weeks ago, when I had to stay near a bathroom all day and night.

    As if you go to a doctor and they take a detailed medical history, perform an exam and do tests. They diagnose IBS with none of this and then if you go back repeatedly and lose a load of weight/ get more ill, you might eventually get tested for something else like IBD. But only if you really push for it.

      I spoke with a gastroenterologist 4 weeks ago after a colonoscopy as I had diarrhoea for a long time, the colonoscopy showed nothing wrong, I have been ibs for 30 years treatment is buscopan only, after speaking with gastroenterologist she said it’s just your ibs playing up and sent me back to GP

      I have had IBS D for years. I was rushing to the loo 5 or 6 times a day. Doctors and gastroenterologist basically said nothing they could do. In desperation I investigated you tube videos. Went carnivore diet and within 3 days no diahorrea!!, I stayed on meat only for 30 days and and was amazed at how much better I felt. IBS gone! However I started to introduce other food one by one. Salad is a no no! Potatoes are ok as is broccoli. I am being very cautious about introducing other food types. Processed and ready meals are not tolerated by my gut. I have also cut out any oils except pure olive oil . Most oils are refined and are very toxic due to the refining process. Hope this will help some of you.I also cut out any bread and biscuits etc.

    Thank you, Dr. Will, and Johnathan. I was diagnosed with Spastic Colon Syndrome at the age of 20. (I think it's the same as IBS today. I am almost 85 now. It's a lifetime search. Doing constant elimination diets has led me to a whole plant diet. Strictly no animal products, no oil, and no or little processed foods. I take some digestive enzymes, and simethacone to help form a stool, and help eliminate gas. The high fiber foods don't bother me as long as I don't indulge in caffeine or the afore mentioned foods. Drs. McDougall, Barnard, have helped me a great deal, among others.. thank you Dr. B for your contribution, too.

    I have always said I had emotional bowels. Get anxious and boom diarrhea. I also started to realize that I’m allergic to vegetables. If I keep my intake of vegetables to a minimum I’m good. If I eat them more than once or twice a week it’s not pleasant. I’ve learned to manage my stress and diet and now rarely have the cramping and pain. Everyone needs to try to listen to what their body and find what works for them.

    I had megacolon as a child from chronic retention of faeces. From my earliest memories my Mother used to put me on the potty late in the evening before bedtime, when my urge to pass anything had faded. So I spent until my teenage years perhaps voiding only once or twice a week. Then as stresses of examinations grew, I developed IBS. The doctors considered that I had a spastic colon. None of the usual drugs like Mebeverine prescribed had any effect, but small doses of diazepam, presumably as anxiolytic and antispasmodic, relieved the pain and made passing stools easier. Finally I had an episode of a pyrexia of unknown origin, with severe IBS pain in the usual site of the descending colon on my left, which resolved itself after a couple of days observation in hospital without any treatment. A diet of Cantonese and Malaysian food for a couple of years gave me a regular regime of passing motions, albeit slightly loose, within an hour of getting up, and from my late 20s until my early 70s, IBS was a thing of the past. Last Christmas, following an episode of Influenza, a productive cough lasting for 5 months terminating in an episode of frank haemoptysis, an CT scan investigation, led to three courses of different antibiotics to counter the lung infection in the lower left lobe, and return of the IBS symptoms - pain with mixed constipation and diarrhoea, several visits to the loo day and night with incomplete voiding. Just started diazepam in the hope of some relief, looks like I may have to find a supply of Penang laksa, avoid cereals except rice, and reeducate my microbiome with blachan and kimchi, or something.

    I was diagnosed with IBS 20 years ago, 10 years after clinial depression diagnosis. Everything here was super helpful. In addition, I have found that a cup of camomile tea helps when I get the bloating symptom that can come before the pain and diarrhea

    Childhood trauma alters the gut microbiome and it doesn't appear to be fixed after healing. I have c-ptsd and many people with IBS report childhood trauma.

      I've had colitis for 2 years I'm 46 had gallbladder removed and found out I had colitis few months later when I went septic I was wondering if you had to get disability for this I've heard I can but can't find a lawyer who will say yes or no

    IBS has had a chokehold on my life for the past three years and thanks to starting Zoe 5.5 months ago and apple cider vinegar every single day now for 6 months and I rarely ever get symptoms anymore. The times I do are at times of max stress and anxiety, but so pleased I’m out the otherside now.

They then score every good on a scale of 0-100, to help you build the healthiest meal for your body - because we’re all very different

    Low serotonin is the cause of IBS for me. It's not that the IBS is "in your head", but in some cases your head is not getting enough neurotransmitters. 5-HTP supplementation for a month or two definitely got my vagus nerve and digestion firing again, and sleeping better again.

    I have IBS and migraines. I have learned that it's very common to have both as they are related. My doc put me on a high fiber diet and it really helped... Except still get migraines.. Best of luck ya'll!

    I have IBS-D. I have had this for 15 years. I became intolerant to all but hard boiled eggs, beans, high fiber grains like wheat, soy, artificial sweeteners, raw veggies. I was put on Viberzi, but eventually it constipated too much. I use Digestive Advantage and Saccromyoces Boulardi probiotic and was able to go off of the Viberzi. I exercise regularly for stress. I am on a Facebook group for it and everyone is different. All you can do is try things.

      I have it too😢 interesting that you could eat full grain. I seem also to be able to eat real sourdough bread ( full grain, artisan organic, 24 hour) it gives really calm belly. No blow and no pain. And yes eggs are fine for me as well. And am trying now with carnivore in the evening but adding some other things in, like saurkraut. I don't know yet about the saurkraut.. We will see. I am surprised you could eat raw vegetables? 😮 I am so dying to eat them, but don't know how my stomach will react. I have ordered saccharomyces boulardii.. And can't wait to try!! Can you eat everything again?

    This was written about me, age 75, onset age 61. Led to Ischemic Bowel Disease where bowel sloughs off clots. Experience 1-2 episodes a week, that put me to bed. New GI Dr now & trying new therapy, including Xifaxin. Learned new information, thank you!

    Believe me it does affect everyday life. I have had IBS since i was 35 and I'm now 72 and am still struggling with it. I also had an ileo cecal resection which complicated my life further. I get lots of pain very loe down in my abdomen. I often get less than 10 seconds to get to a loo. Can you imagine how embarrasing that could be. I would dearly like to have 'normal' gut

    I have never been diagnosed with IBS, but have had chronic constipation for decades and am finally after much experimentation coming to a couple of conclusions..
    1. I am constipated when it takes more than 5 minutes to evacuate... regardless of frequency or the nature of the results.
    2. While Miralax has been recommended recently and I have found it effective, I am happier with results from either cod liver oil or castor oil... (I've also tried the olive oil/lemon juice/honey and pepper route, but that is about as effective FOR ME as the Miralax (or the generic equivalent.)
    3. Fermented foods or legumes may or may not cause me to bloat and yes peppermint tea or oil is effective but it may take a couple of hours...
    4. My ferritin level is less than normal, so it is of concern what effects all these things have on my body. I found that European travel was very easy on my stomach and even my sugar dips, so now I look for where the products are produced... I also noted in the French pharmacy, that they ACTUALLY HAVE a system to evaluate their supplements.. Remember our production of most everything here in the states has been moved offshore and the place where the product is produced is not indicated... Which is something that might be happening in Europe because of the removal of the country of origin.. (why would that be done? think about it...)

    Mine is so bad I almost pray for constipation! i have the gut pains, as many a 6 bathroom rushes and the urgency is ridiculous. I have episodes that last a week before the semi-calm. I could not get an appointment with gastroentologist until late January 2024. I have cut down on coffee and am taking probiotics and have helped some.

    From approximately 18-20(1983-85) I was on the antibiotic tetracycline to manage my acne. In my late 20's I developed gastrointestinal dysfunction, reflux, bloating, gas, incessant burping. I had to take regular antacids and guzzle Mylanta! it was horrendous. I would awake at night because of discomfort. At no time did the doctor make a single mention of the negative side affects of long term antibiotics on the microbiome. I developed anxiety and depression from some traumatic events. I'm now 58 and still trying to minimise the bloating and gas. I'm going to increase my vegetable diversity and I'm doing Wim Hoff method breathing and easing myself to the cold showers.     I was diagnosed with IBS 29 years ago in 1995. To this day even though I have talked with every doctor that I’ve had since then about it, not one doctor has given me medical advice for it. Now I suffer from diverticulitis often and have even ended up the ER. I was also on acid blockers for this same time and now my body will not digest vegetables. I’ve been off the acid blockers for 5 years now however my stomach has not recovered. Most all vegetables come out of me in the same condition as they went in. It looks like I just chewed them and spit them into the toilet. To avoid digestive problems I only eat meat, onions and radishes. The last two being the only veggies that won’t destroy my digestive process.

    IBS with diarrhoea is no funny thing and can severely affect life. Noting the gradual onset some 15 years ago, I identified this initially to much of the sauces and processed foods that can be added to make a meal. It’s now got to a point that I have to be careful about using anything processed. Restaurant food is in the most best avoided. By food avoidance - ie highly processed foods, garlic, certain fruit and vegetables - plain homemade food seems the best management for me at least. You can think you are managing your food and then something you may normally think is ok to eat seems to cause a problem.

    Even though my IBS symptoms went away after an emergency appendectomy I still found this video helpful. I suffered from IBS symptoms for eight months eating only bland food in a modified BRAT(banana, rice, applesauce & toast) diet. After my surgery my PCP suggested that I probably had chronic appendicitis which was the cause of my IBS symptoms. I'm wondering if you had any patients with the same results. Your description of IBS was spot on for me and describes my symptoms to a tee. I am IBS free now and feel like I have a new life to live at age 68.

      Yours went away and mine started shortly after an appendectomy. Had every test possible, they couldn't find anything and just said it is probably IBS. Was bad for 8 months, but gradually got better. Still have episodes but not as bad as the onset.

      @@westsparks6844wow the same thing happened to my 16 year old son. He started with his appendix being removed then his pain continued. They found H pylori was given very strong antibiotics. He was sick with joint pain, sharp burning pain in the stomach, diarrhea, vommiting and losed over 70 lbs in less than a year. He missed school for about 4 months. It got triggered again this year and after doing another colonoscopy and endoscopy they told him he has ibs-d.

      After my appendix burst and I had surgery I developed IBS It was and still is at times awful. I was put on the format diet and learned quickly you are what you eat.

    Thank you for opening up on the possibility that IBS could be something else. I have never talked to my doctor about my problem with diarrhea because I know he would not like the idea that I had sleeve surgery. All my problems started after the surgery, including Lactose
    Intolerance. I have a gastrointestinal doctor because my Father died of colon cancer so I have a colonoscopy when my doctor tells me it is
    time. Luckily I have even been able to get my husband to also have a colonoscopy. Listening to you I think I will make an appointment with
    my Gastroenterologist, whatever I have does affect my lifestyle very much. If I am leaving home I always take anti-diarrhea medication.
    I have wondered if this is a bad choice but I don’t leave home without taking it. I’m ready to get help. Thank you!!

      You most likely have SIBO (look it up) and it will cause GERD in some cases. Lots of burping or gas.
      Battle plan:
      1. Get a bottle of Atrantil.
      2. Start taking HCL and bile salts with cooked protein meals.
      3. Look up a SIBO diet.
      4. If you smoke and/drink alcohol, quit.
      5. No sugars, wheat at all for 6 months.
      6. You can also strengthen your gut linings with Gut repair formula after you get rid of the GERD.

    My IBS - C only got better when I went on a low fibre ketogenic diet, and my panic attacks also stopped. I'd previously been eating a wholefood vegan diet for years and developed debilitating IBS that made me afraid to leave the house.

      Coffee enemas will help clean you out and help with toxins removal, which will greatly help with sleep and anxiety.
      2. Get a DNA based Stool test, a SIBO test would be beneficial as well.
      3. Betaine HCL and Bile salts with cooked proteins.
      4. Eat clean, avoid wheat, junk food, processed foods and stick with pasture raised meats/fish, organic eggs.

I started off doing the Fast Tract diet by Dr Norm Robillard (website is digestive health institute) which scores foods based on 'Fermentation Potential' (likelihood that they will cause symptoms). As I don't tolerate starches very well I ended up doing a ketogenic version of this with occasional non-ketogenic foods such as small amounts of honey. I eat meat, fish, eggs, olive oil, beef fat, small amounts of fermented veg, lemon juice, olives, occasional goats/sheeps cheese or yogurt, occasional berries. I choose fatty cuts of meat over lean cuts and usually eat 3x per day within an 8-10hr eating window.

    I have benefitted from regular therapeutic massage. I've noticed a reduction in pain episodes. I get a massage every 3 weeks. This is not the only life change, but it has made a difference.

    I had IBS. I went on a meat and animal fat only diet and my IBS ended within 3 days and has not come back. No fibre, no constipation, no gas, no diarrhoea, no pain. One toilet visit per day. For you, like me, the "cure" may be simply to remove the foods (fibre) that provoke it.

      Interestingly, I experienced the opposite. I had very bad ibs and thought I was fibre intolerant, but after removing animal products from my diet I was able to tolerate any normal amount of fibre, something about having meet egg or dairy irritated things to the point I couldn't tolerate fibre. Prior i'd tried everything from, fodmap, low fibre, all sorts of elimation. I had noticed some improvement in pain but never tolerance. After cutting out red and processed meats I never considered salmon, egg or chicken could play a negative role. However, within weeks of removing them I saw massive improvements like never before.

      @@davidr1431 I have listened to a lot of podcasts about health and nutrients. I have listened to medical doctors who suggest carnivore diet and also to the ones who suggest plant based diet. My conclusions so far:
      1) If you have severe gut/digestive issues, carnivore diet is usually more agreeable with your gut.
      One doctor (I forget his name) said that 'red meat is the least disruptive food for your gut'. Fred Ervard, who has survived stage 3 colon cancer said that, at the worst of his illness he couldn't eat anything other than rib-eye steak, not even chicken, egg, or dairy. And previously he had been vegan for about 10 years!
      2) If you have no issue with your digestive system, you can eat a lot of plant based food and reap various benefit from it (longevity, etc.).
      Most doctors and scientists on those podcasts suggest mostly plant based diet with some animal based food (egg, kefir, yogurt, fish, chicken, even red meat - all grass-fed or pasture-raised). There's only a few who suggest pure vegan diet. And they always suggest to also take supplements, because they acknowledge the difficulties to get sufficient nutrients from plant based food only.
      As far as I know, none of the Big Four of Zoe speakers (Tim Spector, Sarah Berry, Will B., and Jonathan, the host) is vegan. All of them are big proponents of the 3K fermented food: kefir, kimchi, and kombucha.

      I think Will B is plant based. His website and publications all lean heavily this way. The Zoe enterprise is heavily plant oriented with meat being minimised and saturated fat demonised.
      From what I’ve heard of other people’s experiences from RUclips comments of the personalised Zoe program that you can buy, it is also universally heavily plant based whatever your biome results.
      The genius of this is that it is like the doctor that predicts the sex of your child with your money back if they are wrong. Everyone gets a predicting of male, just like everyone gets a recommendation of minimise meat and maximise plants. For those who it suits the result is fantastic, for those who it doesn’t, they stop paying and are never heard from again.
      They do not get a recommendation of minimise plants and fibre which might be exactly what they need.
      This is also a pity as the Zoe predicts research may become increasing scewed towards people who respond well to a plant heavy diet and the study results may then confirm how good this is for all.
      They will claim that the study is sound but omit the fact that the participants are increasingly self selecting.
      The good news is that the comments section of videos like this allow people who are interested to understand that there are various options for them to try and with the exception of ultra processed food there is a solution for them to find improved health.

      @@tiararoxeanne1318 It can be complicated, because meat like ribeye's and store bought chicken has tons of histamines in them and if you have gut damage this can mimic IBS. That's my situation. When I eat high fiber and plant based foods it regulates me because the histimine/mast cell reaction goes away and inflammation goes down.

    Such a helpful video. Thank you so much. Super-clear and simple information and advice. I suspect I may have developed IBS and the only thing I'd claim is that, in my case, it isn't related at all to stress or depression. I'm so laid back I'm a danger to myself, and I've been meditating and a follower of Buddhism for years and years. This leaves me with "Is this really IBS". So I think low FODMAP is a good way to go and then a visit to my GP surgery if it brings no relief.

    Try intermittent 24 hour fasts, cut out sugar and excess carbohydrate, hopefully you should see an improvement. If you cant fast for 24 hours build up to it, do 6 hours one day, then 12 the next day, etc

    In my experience, I had zero issues until 25 years old. I developed ibs after a long period antibiotics term a few years ago and it seems to be permanent now. I had to take antibiotics for a completely unrelated reason. Therefore I believe ibs has a strong connection with the gut bacteria. I hope this helps someone to get a hint on their way to find a cure one day.

    Diagnosed with IBS-C at about age 20. Barium enema with fluoroscope detecting motility in colon. Often it's not the what but the when. The colon tends to shut down when it senses something uneasy in the atmosphere, with concomitant bloating and cramps. Sensitivity may play a part, but not necessarily stress per se. Had symptoms when I was working and after I retired they did not dissipate, albeit the stress of work made bowel habits more regular. I have my own planetary theory which is probably too way out for this blog, so I'll spare you. But if you can lay your hands on a used copy of "Cosmic Patterns: Their Influence on Man and His Communication" by J. H. Nelson, I think you'll gain some insight into the "when."

    Very good information and greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for sharing. I’ve read all of the comments and appreciate them too. I’ve suffered with IBS-D from childhood and was finally diagnosed in my 40s after years of doctor visits and my first colonoscopy. As a child, I gave the name, “Poop cramps” to my movements because of the pain and cramping. I have almost every symptom described in this presentation from an IBS-D perspective. My quality of life has definitely been affected by it with fear of being in public and especially when a toilet isn’t near. Nevertheless, I’m positive making fun of myself giving names to the mucus like “poopoo grease”, “butt snot”, etc. I celebrate every solid turd as a special occasion. I can definitely understand the saying not to trust a fart! Stress definitely affects my symptoms too and mindfulness and breathing exercises definitely has helped me. I also suffer with chronic migraines and various other types of headaches and was diagnosed finally with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain patient. Diet is a constant consideration and challenge. I haven’t found the perfect one yet trying vegan, vegetarian, carnivore and everything in between. Probably a whole food diet has been best for me taking enzymes to help my digestive issues. My stomach is carrying on a conversation with me as I write, never a silent moment. 😊

    The age-old question that I've been thinking about for almost 30 years since being diagnosed in 1997 (I've had symptoms since 1994) is "does the IBS cause the stress or does the stress/anxiety cause IBS?" I also was on antibiotics for years for acne (1993-94) so RIGHT before I had IBS symptoms. Classic case, unfortunately for me. Thanks for your video. It's very accurate and helpful, even years after diagnosis!

    I’ve had IBS C from my teenage years. Severe pain and bloating being the main symptoms. However, before having my gall bladder removed, I was tested for H.Pylori which was positive. I was given triple antibiotic therapy and my symptoms changed dramatically to IBS D and at times passing water like fluid and lots of mucus. This is far worse than IBS C as it is uncontrollable. I’ve been tested for all sorts of things, gastroscopy and colonoscopy were clear.

    I was diagnosed with IBSC. Certain foods help in gut health, like sweet red pepper. I have a whole list of what to eat/not eat. And I am doing fine by following this list. Only when I stop eating these foods do my symptoms return. My key is Prebiotics.

    I completely agree with “Is this really IBS?” After having our son at 40..postpartum kicked in along with GAD and agoraphobia. I spent years worrying about what my gut will do on long trips and with what foods I would eat that I would remove myself from all family functions. It wasn’t until my doctor suggested I try Zoloft that I actually experienced a huge difference in what my body was doing. My mind is so much more calm in turn causing an effect on the rest of my body. I’m feeling so much better now and, I’m able to actually live and even reintroduce foods that I had eliminated thinking they were causing IBS issues. This video is extremely informative…Thank You.
