Former soil/pollutant degradation microbiologist with IBS here… 1) I’d like to understand more about the bacterial/yeast balance in the gut. Everyone seems to forget about yeasts. Maybe that’s why kombucha is popular - a very mixed culture, not just lactobacillus. 2) I used to take a probiotic lactobacillus blend every day, and I think it messed up my Ca++ balance - I got calcium oxalate kidney stones which resolved after quitting the probiotic. No proof, maybe just coincidental timing, but daily probiotic was probably too much. 3) When recovering from an IBS flare-up, limiting processes starches and sugars, adding prebiotics like oatmeal, lentils, and beans, and taking a mixed probiotic blend capsule speeds up my recovery. I’ve also begun adding a little fermented red cabbage in beet juice to savory foods, and I think that is helping. Finding lactose-free kefir is rare but good when you can get it. There are a bunch of different kimchees - cabbage, daikon, cucumber, and combos thereof. Different levels of spice and different seasonal batches mean you can find something you like. Thanks for the good video. Now let’s all say a little prayer for the C. diff patients - yikes.
Yeast is greatly overlooked! We have it all over our body. And yeast is just a fungus. So, I discovered that using an athlete's foot spray under my breasts a couple times a week during summer drastically help with the rashes I would get on my chest. I live in South Texas - so hot for about 8 months of the year and grossly humid all year. I also use it on my neck and at the back of the hairline during the summer because of how excessively I sweat. And yeast loves my tasty, tasty sweet sweat!
I love how you always say, "you are in charge of your own health ". My dad graduated medical school in 1953 and finished his specialty (radiology) in 1964. He use to say that. I don't remember ever having even asprin in the house. His advice, walk at least 20 minutes a day, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and take good care of your teeth. My opthomologist asked me why I was so healthy, so i gave him my dad's advice. I am not medically trained. Lol.
I lost all my teeth by age 50. They got brittle and began breaking off. I believe it was a combination of things drinking lots of soda as a kid, low magnesium, and low vitamin d. The magnesium also eliminated my lifetime leg cramps not one since I started it. I believe they actually make probiotics now that help with dental health too.
You were speaking about the correlation between the brain and the gut. When our son is going to have a seizure he often has a sore tummy. He has collapsed on the toilet a few times when having a seizure. He also vomits after a seizure. We have long thought there was some sort of connection from his brain to his stomach. Great video
Viome has a program where they test your stool and then make and send you a custom probiotic just for your gut biome for $79 a month. They retest every six months I believe. Many have found this beneficial for all kinds of health issues. I have not tried the service yet but I'm seriously considering it.
Great job. 50 years ago I was diagnosed with Crohn's. Not many pharmaceuticals back then. Prednisone for me for several years. My doc (Norman Marcon) didn't follow the book and tried me on eating wheat bran as a supplement. That was unconventional but HUGE for me. Little was understood back then about the biome. 30 years later I had only scar tissue and 40 years later I had no signs of crohn's. 50 years later, still great. Probiotics have been shown to be less useful after antibiotics as compared with a huge variety of plant foods with daily ingestion of fermented foods for a couple of weeks. Fermented foods have been huge for me. One correction about sauerkraut and fermented pickles. They must be home made OR purchased from the refrigerator section of the store. Shelf stable jars are pasteurized and are tasty but not containing any bacteria. Buying fermented foods must be from the fridge and try to just warm them rather than kill them with heat. Great discussion guys. This particular one covered every base that it should have.
After amoxicillin destroyed my gut, taking a probiotic has totally made me feel like a new person! Digestive issues I was suffering from before are gone! Sense of wellness increased and lower anxiety.
The same happened to me. After taking amoxicillin I had problems with my gut and urinary microflora. Now I am taking FemProbiotics and I have no more candida :)
As someone who suffered from c.diff. last year (caused by an antibiotic), I started taking probiotics after tamping down the c.diff. bacteria. Took a couple of months of rebuilding my gut biome with healthy, appropriate foods, the addition of probiotics were/are a game changer for sure. I’m better physically and mentally. 🙌🏼
@@daffin5272 Towards the end of the second round of another antibiotic (metronidazole) to kill off the rampant c.diff., I could take Align. Then I found a better one (for me): Trunature Wonen’s Daily Probiotic. I take it first thing in the morning when my stomach is at its emptiest so the good bacteria have an opportunity to thrive without interruption from food. Then I can eat about an hour later. Hope this helps!
I had a very similar experience but for H Pylori. Antibiotics made my life hell even though it got rid of H Pylori. I tried several probiotics and most of them made me worse OR did nothing except the one that has Saccharomyces Boulardii I-745(Florastor). It was a GAME CHANGER! Look it up on here and trust me it will help@daffin5272
Prior to a dental implant, the doctor told me to start taking and continue taking probiotics due to the antibiotics given to prevent an infection related to the surgery causing damage to my gut bacteria. No problems occurred related to the surgery or my gut health.
I had colon cancer and had terrible problems after repair for 12 yrs, I have recently about 4 months ago started Greek yoghurt, lreuteri yoghurt and kefir, I make my own now and it has changed my life, I no longer have to go to the toilet 15 times a day in great pain and it's hugely helped my reflux from Hiatus Hernia as well, I cannot even tell you the relief this has given me that no drug ever has.
I eat sauerkraut every morning, usually with a fried egg. I don't cook the sauerkraut, that would kill the bacteria. Also the sauerkraut needs to be the raw, unpasteurized type, not canned. You find it in the refrigerated area.
If you are chronically constipated, be very careful with the sauerkrout and other things fermented. Take it slow and work up. It did eventually help, but not if you overdo.
A probiotic supplement changed my life! No more bacterial vaginosis, anxiety gone and skin issues all cleared up. My gut was destroyed before probiotics. Edit: The probiotic is FlowFlora 40-Billion CFU
Hi I’m a devoted fan of your content, I enjoy your no nonsense approach and humour.Personally I didnt buy into the whole probiotic thing. I did however start using them daily when vacationing in Mexico . I was falling ill with every visit starting about ten years ago. Taking these Canadian made probiotics without fail has eliminated the gastrointestinal nightmare completely for about 5 years now.I’m 65 and I know not to over consume both food and alcohol . Overall I feel getting older has contributed to the tendency to become unwell when leaving our cocoon of First world food safety . This will be our 30 th winter in Mexico. I don’t know why they the probiotics work and don’t care , they just work.
I truly enjoyed your video dear Docs. When I actually had a GP, he told me that for most people, supplements are simply a money burner. I have taken probiotics after an antibiotic treatment.
I went to the health food store the other day and I was inundated with the amount of probiotics on the shelves. A whole aisle was designated just to them, the prices were by no means cheap. thank you for confirming that they are not regulated and just few choice foods will do the trick.
For many years I had frequent u.t.i s, treated with antibiotics. After taking broad spectrum probiotics daily, I didn't have another episode for 10 months. Now I usually manage an infection with the probiotic and D.Mannose. Brilliant!
Any suggestions for the probiotic? I use d mannose as well and it's saved me so much if I catch it before it becomes a proper infection. I haven't been using a probiotic though
I mix take tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and put a 4th tsp of chia seeds and mix pomegranate juice together and drink it everyday, also a teaspoon of kimchee too! Sauerkraut is great! Thanks Docs!
I had C Diff and finished my Vancomycin two days ago. I’m left with IBS and gastric distention. I never in my life had any gut issues before this diagnosis. Clindamycin antibiotic use for a dental procedure made me susceptible to C Diff. I was told to start probiotics, and I have. I am eating sauerkraut and yogurt. Just praying C Diff is actually gone, it’s terrifying! It is life threatening. Thankyou for this video doctors! I wish FMT was easier to attain before patients are deathly ill in the hospital.
As someone who suffered from chronic constipation that seemed IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of, despite trying hundreds of things, I was thrilled to find that my digestive system became 100% predictable and regular just from taking probiotics, so for ME, I take that as an assumption that it DOES work and IS working. I find it to be a virtual miracle.
@pinkrose4824 I have found that I get excellent bowel movements from resistant starch. Supposedly hunter gatherers had a lot more of it in their diet than we modern people, which indicates to me that our digestive tract evolved in the presence of it. Many wild tubers are not that easy to digest, and those guys didn’t have the greatest cooking facilities at all times. There are many articles on the web about it. I use a mix of unmodified potato starch, plantain or green banana flour, psyllium husk, with smaller amounts of turmeric and cinnamon. The latter supposedly has benefits. Scuttlebutt is that black pepper improves metabolism of turmeric. Who knows. I do about two or 3 tablespoons of that shaken with water in a jar, and add some liquid electrolytes. doesn’t taste great, but it’s not nearly as bad as wheat grass juice, for example. I do it before bedtime, it supposedly gives you good dreams.
After having gallbladder surgery, 4 weeks later had problems with gas, also coffee bothered me (loose stool). I started 3 TBSP of greek yogurt (low sugar, low fat, live and active cultures) each morning before I eat or drink anything, by day 3 of doing this...the problems went away.😊
Align Probiotics changed my life!!! After 40+ years of bronchitis and six weeks of coughing every time, a retired Chemical Engineer told me Align probiotics changed his lifelong similat bronchitis issues. I started 10 years ago and it's been miraculous for me!! Not a single episode of bronchitis in 10+ years. Never got Covid, either!!! I believe in Align!
I’m lactose intolerant and can’t eat eggs either, so I take a probiotic twice a week and it seems to help my stomach feel better along with eating vegetables and drinking lots of water.
I picked up C-Diff after colon surgery and went on an antibiotic protocol, Vancomycin, and took a daily high-potency probiotic to help my gut health. I have been off the antibiotic for three months and continue using the probiotic. The C-Diff has not resurfaced, and I feel the probiotic has helped keep my gut health in balance and the C-Diff from returning.
Was the probiotic prescribed? I need some serious help and I’m not sure if I can just buy one or my gastrointestinal doctor has to prescribe one for cdiff
I’m not a probiotic user intentionally, although (unlike Doc Paul), I do like yogurt and eat it occasionally. But I’ve learned the value of probiotics for my dog! The poor little guy started having frequent diarrhea within a couple of months after I got him-seriously enough that I took him to the veterinary clinic on a near-emergency basis, where they not only prescribed a probiotic but also a special food for awhile. After that, though, he would still have periodic bouts of diarrhea, every few days, often associated with going camping or traveling, but sometimes without any specific event that I could associate with it. For quite awhile, I thought it might be a dairy issue, because he likes ice cream and I learned that often dogs are lactose intolerant. Then I read an Internet article that suggested that dogs whose guts respond poorly to stress might benefit from probiotics. The article described all sorts of potential stress inducers, from traveling, to changes in life style, to being left alone, to guests in the home-even when the dog seems to be enjoying the event. My little guy seems to love going for rides and going camping, and he seems to have no issues with being left alone, but way too often, he’d get sick, typically with diarrhea and sometimes vomiting. So at his next visit to the veterinary clinic, I asked about trying a regular supplement of probiotics. The staff veterinarian suggested trying it for a month, and go from there. That was 1 1/2 years ago, and he’s had only one brief episode of diarrhea in all that time. So at least for him, the prescribed probiotic supplement, which he gets with his evening meal every evening, has been a real God-send. He’s been much healthier all around, and obviously he’s much happier, not having frequent tummy problems. I’m happier, too, because I haven’t had to clean up after him in all that time!
When my youngest child had an earache (29 years ago) I took her to the clinic I had hoped to get a culture done. The Dr. prescribed an antibiotic without a culture. When I questioned her about the over prescribing of antibiotics. She made me feel like I was out of line. People always blame the "parents" but in some cases it is the doctor.
In the time it took for the lab to grow the culture, that same culture was growing in your child's ear possibly damaging her hearing. Listen to the doctor.
Your humour is sweet. Keep it up. As a RN, I appreciate the education on all these topics. My husband used Pre and Pro biopics everyday for 6 months, and it did help his stomach ( a bit) after Vancomycin (antibiotic). I tried it along with him, and had no change , or noted benefit, nor bad side effect. Pre and or Pro biopics are ridiculously expensive, so I like your suggestion of foods to try. Great job, you two !
I get Culturelle Probiotics from Costco when they go on sale. That helps to save a little money. And, they go on sale about every 3 months ... so I buy them then.
Thank you for the information and I agree everyone is different. I’ve been taking Align for the last four weeks and I have never felt better in my life. The bloating the acid reflex symptoms have completely been removed.
I do take a probiotic daily but now I’m rethinking that. I also take regular vitamins, glucosamine and magnesium bysglinate. I have a really healthy diet, eat lots of vegetables too, and stay away from too many carbs, sugars and processed food. Thanks for all the information. Food for thought…I need to digest all this information 😅. Thanks for staying real docs!
Easy, they'll tell you they don't work because they are not FDA approved. My take, do your own research, there's TONS of scientific papers out there with REAL scientific evidence.
I had chronic sinus and ear infections as a child and was on antibiotics constantly, often prescribed by my own father who was a dentist. I went through all kinds of health problems probably related to leaky gut type stuff. A decade ago I had a very bad sinus and ear thing that required sinus surgery and PE tubes in my ears. That year, before and after surgery, I took at least 7 courses of antibiotics including some of the scary ones - an allergist I saw literally flinched when I recounted all of the antibiotics I had taken that terrible year. But - I took one of the rather expensive probiotic supplement every day that year and never developed any GI or GYN issues, it was amazing,
I noticed that as I started drinking alcohol to excess, that I would have nausea every morning when I woke up. Brushing my teeth would cause me to wretch and would frequently induce vomiting. My bowel movements became very loose and more frequent. I observed this for nearly a year. At some point I began to wonder if maybe the alcohol was killing the "good" bacteria in my bowel, much the way antibiotics do, so I started taking a probiotic that had 10 strains and 60 billion CFU (colony forming units) and within 4 days the symptoms went away and have stayed away for nearly a year and a half. Not drinking would probably be the better solution, but for now this is working. If I fail to resupply and miss a couple of doses, that's all it takes for the nausea to return. I'm convinced that the loose bowels would also return in a few more days. This is anecdotal, but it's truly what I've observed in my own experience, for what that's worth.
If I ever get fever blisters they can get really bad, but if I catch it in time and start taking probiotics 3-6 times a day it prevents them from spreading
I have IBS, and life isn't great without taking probiotics. Was originally recommended by my (then) GP. Trouble is I don't know which company I can trust. Was taking Renew Life, but they became inconsistent and recently switched to Webbers which seem to work well but don't entirely trust them. BTW, I take it daily and have for a decade, if I miss one day, its a big issue (blotting, pain, irregularity, etc).
Of the 10 you listed, I don't eat any of them, partially because I am lactose intolerant and I have a soy allergy. I am a whole food plant based vegan, and besides vitamins D3 and B12, I take 3 to 4 tablespoons of ground flaxseed meal, which has really helped my gut, not to mention lowering my BP substantially. Interesting video though.
You can make homemade (or buy) coconut milk yogurt? Also homemade or store bought fermented sauerkraut. Wild Brine is really good I've bought that a few times. Can also make fermented vegetables. Don't forget vegetarian kimchi. Most kimchi has fish in it but I've seen vegetarian versions.
Whenever I had to take an antibiotic I would get a yeast infection. When I told the pharmacist, she told me to take a cultural, probiotic while I was taking the antibiotic and for a few days after. I have never had a yeast infection after taking antibiotic since. I know they have helped me.
I battled extreme migraines for over 20 years and about 3 ish years ago I started taking a daily probiotic for some stomach issues and it took care of that, but after about a year I realized I hadn’t had any migraines. Now almost 3 years later (still taking the probiotic) I still haven’t had one, so just another example of the stomach biome and brain connection.
Another excellent video topic. When I contracted Bacterial Pneumonia the antibiotics removed my gut bacteria, so I was told to take OptiBac, it did make me feel better quick quickly.
I take Align when taking antibiotics - or actually I take it at a different meal during the course plus a few days after. Was recommended by a very conservative and experienced GI who ordinarily didn't do much too new fangled! The doctor's brand preference was due to it being the only brand with the research behind it.
I've tried probiotics and didn't notice any difference, and as you say they are unregulated so I always worried if they were what they say they are. I do take digestive enzymes and I find they help my stomach. I've had my gallbladder out and was told it helps. Do you agree?
My husband and I were advised by our two GPs to take probiotics; after some YEARS of this, we had to stop as they were doing more harm than good. Also, we have & ingest 8 of the foods that you list at the end of this video - thanks very much!
The 2 last times i took antibiotics i took them with lots of water on an empty stomach thinking it'll minimize killing intestinal flora. Once for a prostate infection and once for h. Pylori.
Love the Dad jokes! Keep them coming. Interesting video. I took a medical/science-based CEU course before Covid and I remember the instructor telling us taking probiotics over the counter was like adding a drop of water to a large water reserve holding tank. She told us to not waste our money with over the counter and to focus on quality food. I was lucky to be born into a family that knew the importance of quality food and that has served me well into adulthood. Food is medicine for general health.
I was on a probiotic for years, without any problems. Then I started to develop stomach issues. Alot of pain no matter what I ate. I went through tests and biopsies, and nothing was found. I decided to stop the probiotic, and after about 3 months, my stomach issues have stopped completely.
I started probiotics about five years ago after some antibiotic therapy. I am convinced that it has improved my digestion. It also seems to have a mild laxative effect so I might skip a day to regulate that. I give it credit for eliminating a hemorrhoid problem. I take it on a completely empty stomach. It is a part of my healthy lifestyle!
I've even heard that when we acquire a taste or crave something it can be due to the bugs in our bellies wanting us to eat it, depending what they thrive on, so is a case of, "we are what we eat", or, "we eat what we are"?
My gastro doctor suggested I take align. I have IBS and had a c-diff outbreak. I couldn't get a fecal transplant because of doctors offices being closed down for covid. The only time I take them now is if I'm prescribed antibiotics because I get c- diff symptoms after 2 days or when I'm fasting. It does help in these conditions.
I have gut issues and starting to add Kefir, Yogurt, fermented foods etc (I did my research and found which products actually have live cultures that haven’t been killed by pasteurization or the sugar added (to fruit yogurt for example). Fermented foods always need to be refrigerated. You really have research it. I had no idea.
As always it's worth mentioning, that pasteurized probiotic foods from the supermarket don't have any life bacteria in them unless they are added afterwards.
I’m making at home Kefir which I take daily along with probiotic saurkraut. In 2007 I had cholorectal cancer and the successful treatment included radiation, chemotherapy and a portion of my rectum and colon removed. For the first 15 years afterwards I battled diarrhea such that I was in constant fear of an untimely evacuation. I adjusted diet, tried medication and increased fibre but nothing dependable resulted. In 2021 I discovered kefir on RUclips as well as fermented foods. Although occasionally I will eat the wrong thing, mostly sugar related, and I will have an issue but these are less frequent and do not last as long. Probiotics in the form of morning sauerkraut and breakfast Kefir along with 2 psyllium capsules daily are what I feel are the reason for this. Incidentally when I asked my doctors for help I received only try this medication or salve. They had no idea how to help so 8:238:23 I guess we as individuals are the guardians of our health.
I always have saurkraut and kimchi in the fridge. I also eat miso and tempeh but not often enough. I'm a vegan so LOTS of fibre but no yoghurt. I'm very curious about microbiome/autoimmune interaction. I recently developed a mild soreness in one wrist/base of thumb so I bought a hand exerciser which has made a difference. I have familial high cholesterol and therefore some atheroschlerosis so maybe there's some kind of weirdness in my gut bugs. Such a fascinating and mind-blowing subject. I have always avoided antibiotics - trying to think whether I've ever had any - not in the last 50 years! I'll be 80 in 12 months. Thanks for the video, they would be NOTHING without the dad jokes! NOTHING!
Try the turmeric with black pepper capsules from Costco, I had pain and a swollen joint in my cmc joint and it is 99% better now. Highly anti inflammatory.
@@1whitecottagelife770Thanks for the tip but I've had to give up turmeric which I love because I'm on blood thinners and so turmeric's blood thinning effect compounds the action of the medication and makes it too powerful, unpredictable and dangerous for me.
Please do SERIOUS research into Keto and the stricter Carnivore way of eating!!!! It is literally saving people’s lives!!! I am a 77 year old female on Carnivore for 8 months now, and it is a life saver. Blessings….
@@carolblair2845 I've been vegetarian then vegan for a total of 55 of my 79 years. There are 3 groups of reasons for my decision: My health, ethical treatment of animals, and environmental concerns incuding climate change mitigation. The whole keto/carnivore thing seems myopic and extremely selfish as it kills billions of animals worldwide each year. An extreme carnivore diet is also not sustainable at all in terms of carbon use. So my decision is not made self-centeredly but in terms of my role as an ethical being in the context of a complex world.
The only time I took probiotics was to counteract C-diff. It was a prescription which was a really high dosage, and I ate yogurt in all kinds of ways. It still took over 18 months to get better. If none of this had worked, I certainly would have considered the transplant option. C-diff is misery!!
I think I just got cdiff for the 2nd time😬 I’m so scared!!! How did you know it wasn’t diarrhea from antibiotics? I also want to treat with probiotics but I’m so confused with the many different kinds and types😳 it does take a long time to get better and the damage it did to my pelvic floor was horrible ❤️🤞✌️
I wish you would have told us what to look for in the capsules you can get at the grocery store! They have sooo many different strengths, and do prescription medications "kill off" the good bacteria causing you to need a probiotic?
Hey Chris! The docs thumbnail pic has a hint... I heard/learned to look for a probiotic that has at least 10 Billion CFU (Colony Forming Units) w/ as many different strains as you can find/afford. I take a probiotic 2 times a week w/ 10 Billion CFUs & 14 strains. I include it as part of my food/grocery budget. My body & mind are happy!
My Uro told me to take them. He said a refrigerated one and also eat yougurt. I have a bladder disease(IC) and could write the book on UTI's.But They help me not get UTI's. But I'd say work with your provider to get best. But helps me.
I always mix apple cider vinegar with smoothies or flavored seltzer water- one thing I would caution- I used to take a straight tablespoon or shot until one day I accidentally coughed while taking it and it went down the wrong "pipe" and up into my nasal cavity- I couldn't breathe. It's a great, beneficial digestive supplement, but always dilute it with some type of liquid before drinking.
In the past my gut would feel unsettled and I would ingest a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar and I would feel a whole lot better afterwards. As a side note,I would suffer from mild vertigo enough so that my gut would have a low grade sickly feeling to it plus I would have to keep my head perfectly vertical and again the apple cider vinegar came to my rescue
I take probiotics but I am going to finish this bottle and then not take them anymore. I eat almost everything you listed that provides enough bacteria already. Thanks for providing good basic information on a variety of topics that gets us thinking about exploring and asking questions about our own health. You Docs rock!!
Cured my acid reflux. I had a pain in my lower thorax around the solar plexus area. Dr scheduled a ultrasound and recommended enzymes just in case it was a gut health issue. A few weeks into the enzymes and I noticed I was not needing antacid tablets anymore and I was eating several everyday, I had some wherever I was and in every jacket pocket. Those enzymes really worked. Ultrasound showed I had cancer though. Luckily I have a treatable form of liver cancer that I am living with but it's not killing me.
A probiotic supplement changed and improved my digestion 1000%. My digestion had gotten so bad that I was afraid to eat out because nothing I ate digested right. I mean just about nothing. The only thing i could eat out was grilled shrimp, hamburger (no cheese) and strangely wine. Thats it. I started doing some research because I really thought I had like IBS or something terrible. Finally bought a probiotic and it took 3 days and my digestion had improved soooo much!! i take it daily and wont go without
Cheap probiotics; take a few of your favorite capsules of probiotic, open them and stir them with the wooden spoon into any kind of milk, and hit the yogurt button on your smart cooker. You’re both testing the quality of your probiotic, and making yogurt for a third of the price. Works every time if you start with the good quality probiotics. It won’t be quite as thick as store-bought yogurt, because you’re not adding thickening agents.
I started a probiotic subscription months ago and it has absolutely changed my body for the better but of course we all react differently and some may not have the same results
My doctor argues that numbers of bacteria in a probiotic supplement capsurle are a drop in the bucket compared to the quantity of bacteria in our gut. She considers them a waste of money and recommends eating fermented foods instead.
Yogurt, parmesan cheese, cottage cheese and sometimes sauerkraut from your list. I'm 85 and still get up each day if, for no other reason, than to see what's NOT WORKING TODAY!
Dr. Paul Z YOU are wonderfully entertaining and love your sense of humour!! Really is invitro truly sterile? What about Mom's bacteria? I grew up on a farm and my family of 13 NEVER went to a doctor nor were we ever given antibiotics. We believed in WHAT DOESN'T KILL US MAKES US STRONGER. Even my two children both born in the "80's NEVER or rarely if ever were giving antibiotics. I did make CABBAGE/SAUERKRAUT this fall and been told it's loaded with probiotics. I don't take probiotics but do take supplement/vitamins.
First of all, I love your humor! Bringing humor into learning is the best way of teaching!👍 I love sauerkraut! Especially on hot dogs! And there are a couple of other things you listed that I will eat. I hate taking antibiotics! They kill your body's own antibodies and weekens your ammune system. I don't think I had 20 rounds of antibiotics before I was 18. I had my tonsils removed when I was about 5 or 6 and had mumps and measles as a kid. I'm sure there were antibiotics prescribed with some of those illnesses. And it seems you're always put on antibiotics after a surgery but I don't think there were very many occasions when I took antibiotics. It upsets me when a doctor tries to prescribe antibiotics for a viral infection. It's just knocking down my body's defenses. Thanks for sharing another great and informative video!
I’ve tried many things, including taking Align and other probiotics, to try to reduce the supersaturated brushite in my urine since I have chronic brushite kidney stones. The probiotics didn’t seem to make a difference according to 24hr urine tests, so I went on to trying other things that have seemed to work. Recently I had to take ANTIbiotics for a tooth infection, my urinary ph skyrocketed, SS brushite went up, etc. Terrible. So there is probably SOME link between my gut biome and my kidney stones. I’m going to have to get two teeth pulled in Jan, so I’ll take probiotics to repopulate my gut. Question-Do you think I should take the probiotic during the course? Or just after? P.S. Your video on hemorrhoids a year or two ago dramatically changed my husband’s life for the better! Major game changer. Thanks a million for what you do!
Im in treatment for H.pylori 2 antibiotics and pantoprazol. Simultaneously im eating broccoli sprouts, kefir twice daily. Im almost done but im scary what is the best way to take care and repair my good bacteria in the fast run to help my gut. Any suggestion doctors..?
I am on Amoxicillin for a UTI now. I have been eating yogurt and oatmeal and taking Florastore. Don't know how its going to go. When I was young, I could take antibiotics without an issue. Now I am 71 and antibiotics kill my stomach.
I drink keefir because I like it. I eat yougurt almost daily. I eat sauer kraut out of the jar, cold because I like it. I am just weird that way. Also drinking different kinds of beer can upset my stomach.
As for a guy (63) now with lifelong IBS and 4 stomach surgeries from Perotinitis, this video is super interesting. I have had hordes of antibiotics, and my PCP says take probiotics. Lactose intolerant too, so greek yogurt is best for me. Also have high BP, so miso is a no no. Other options in foods?
Another brilliant and interesting video. I really enjoy natural yogurt, cottage cheese, sauerkraut, miso and parmigiana. After following you two fab, funny and informative doctors for some years I feel that you have a cookbook within waiting to be written! Many thanks
Miso paste and kimchi actually r doing nothing if after you cooked, the active probiotics died already. In addition, miso paste is extremely salty, only a tsp can be added into water to make a soup, so a tiny quantity for probiotic actives doesn't warrant its myth in addition of dead probiotics bodies in millions in lasting high temperature cooking. Besides, miso paste was learnt from the ancestor of China, kimchi was learned from its continent of China's Si-Chuang province as well. Let me tell you the truth: go to Chinese supermarkets locally, you will find far more than ever the probiotics products in foods who's the ancestor s of numerous eastern Asian's fermented things: fermented soybean paste or beans in variety of forms and types, and many many others. The so-called miso paste, kimchi, tempeh, natto etc. just a huge campaign of ads for "something" (the nationalism, or politics, or "the soul of capitalism" of, a huge money therefore has been earned universally in the endless space、、、) .🎉😢😅🤬🥳😁 Warned (please don't say I didn't warn you first😢): Korean kimchi has extremely high Nitrites especially in its peak period of the first 3 days, and lasts to the 6th till 20 days. After 20 days, you even can't eat the kimchi, which became a mushy one like rotten.
So glad to hear that “supplements” are unreliable. I’ve spent good money on some, a few times, but my budget really could not sustain purchasing them endlessly. Thanks so much for sharing this info! 🤸🏼 Also love laughing along with you Docs! 😁
I some how got a bone infection when an incision didn't heal from a foot surgery and i was given some very strong antibiotics to help clear up the infection. The antibiotics didn't clear up the infection so ended up having an amputation which gave me the best chance of getting rid of the infection. I have been on a probiotic supplement ever since along with foods that help with probiotics. Doing OK now it's been 9 years since the amputation
Really so so sorry to hear about that. Just can't believe how could hospital go wrong when does procedures on the operation tables? If you as a surgeon and assistants strictly follow the procedures? Horrible story. Best wishes to you in this new year and going forward 🎉❤!
I make my own yogourt and kefir with kefir grains. Kefir is healthier than yogourt, having almost double the cultures. Very soon I will make my first batch of sauerkraut... Some of the other fermented foods look like they would be as interesting to make...very nice subject...
I have read many books, I listened to many RUclips videos by many of the world's leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to the hidden herbs by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.
Hi Docs, one important point regarding cheese for all your followers. Parmesan and Parmigiana-Reggiana are very different. The latter is controlled in Italy under their strict DOP laws. The former is made in different countries by their own methods. Parmigiana-Reggiana is the epitome of what we call Parmesan. Expensive but well worth it. Costco sells it at a bargain.
I’ve suffered with IBS for many years and have tried most things, including several probiotics. Nothing helped, so don’t bother now. I do have Kefir and it’s nice. I love all fermented foods but can’t eat them due to the IBS. So annoying! 😟
Thanks for this video and information on probiotics. Currently I do not take any of these supplements. I would first ask my primary physician if it is helpful to take any of these supplements. One of my friends said he is taking them, but that doesn't mean that I should. I eat allot of fruits, some meats, veggies, and many whole foods. Diet does play a big part in how we feel. Anyway, thanks for the video. take care.
Former soil/pollutant degradation microbiologist with IBS here…
1) I’d like to understand more about the bacterial/yeast balance in the gut.
Lol.
Great advice!
Absolutely look after your teeth. It’s linked to your brain and your heart health. The teeth that is
Great dad. I will teach my daughter that as well 😁
I lost all my teeth by age 50. They got brittle and began breaking off. I believe it was a combination of things drinking lots of soda as a kid, low magnesium, and low vitamin d. The magnesium also eliminated my lifetime leg cramps not one since I started it. I believe they actually make probiotics now that help with dental health too.
After recovering from surgery and all the antibiotics I took because of that, they gave me probotics capsules to take for a week to help my gut.
You were speaking about the correlation between the brain and the gut. When our son is going to have a seizure he often has a sore tummy. He has collapsed on the toilet a few times when having a seizure. He also vomits after a seizure. We have long thought there was some sort of connection from his brain to his stomach. Great video
Same with a lot of migraine sufferers.
I had ulcerative colitis, with surgery about 30 years ago. When I discovered vsl, now visbiome, a few years it was life changing.
What is flow flora
After amoxicillin destroyed my gut, taking a probiotic has totally made me feel like a new person! Digestive issues I was suffering from before are gone! Sense of wellness increased and lower anxiety.
The same happened to me. After taking amoxicillin I had problems with my gut and urinary microflora. Now I am taking FemProbiotics and I have no more candida :)
Which one did you guys take?
As someone who suffered from c.diff. last year (caused by an antibiotic), I started taking probiotics after tamping down the c.diff. bacteria. Took a couple of months of rebuilding my gut biome with healthy, appropriate foods, the addition of probiotics were/are a game changer for sure. I’m better physically and mentally. 🙌🏼
Which probiotics did you take?
Saccromycis boulardi helps with that
Prior to a dental implant, the doctor told me to start taking and continue taking probiotics due to the antibiotics given to prevent an infection related to the surgery causing damage to my gut bacteria.
Heck yeah 😊how about cottage cheese?
I love those two doctors! They are fun and smart and I always learn something new.Thanks.
I eat sauerkraut every morning, usually with a fried egg. I don't cook the sauerkraut, that would kill the bacteria. Also the sauerkraut needs to be the raw, unpasteurized type, not canned. You find it in the refrigerated area.
Nice work
Or make it yourself! Super easy and cheap!
If you are chronically constipated, be very careful with the sauerkrout and other things fermented. Take it slow and work up. It did eventually help, but not if you overdo.
True that, I concur. Start with a pea size then more then more n more, yum 😋 ❤
A probiotic supplement changed my life! No more bacterial vaginosis, anxiety gone and skin issues all cleared up. My gut was destroyed before probiotics.
Edit: The probiotic is FlowFlora 40-Billion CFU
what is the supplement you used?
The one from Alicia's Naturals@@moongirl3232
Alicia's Naturals 40 Billion@@moongirl3232
I don’t take supplements, but I do eat plain full fat yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut, and occasionally drink kefir.
which probiotic?
I have IBS-C and after research have found two specific probiotics that are extremely helpful.
I have that too. Which ones were they? I hear aligin and curetelle. Which is better and helped you? Please and thanks in advance
I went to the health food store the other day and I was inundated with the amount of probiotics on the shelves. A whole aisle was designated just to them, the prices were by no means cheap. thank you for confirming that they are not regulated and just few choice foods will do the trick.
Very welcome Paul.
You need to mix more crap in your concoction.
Yes very scary. Best of luck
@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you 😊
As someone who suffered from chronic constipation that seemed IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of, despite trying hundreds of things, I was thrilled to find that my digestive system became 100% predictable and regular just from taking probiotics, so for ME, I take that as an assumption that it DOES work and IS working. I find it to be a virtual miracle.
So probiotic’s solved your chronic constipation?
Which brand do you take?
I suffer from constipation. So what kind of probiotic foods helped you get rid of constipation? Thanks
Which one do you use?
@pinkrose4824
I have found that I get excellent bowel movements from resistant starch.
I take Align as well. It's amazing.
I love the humor in your videos. You make learning about medical issues fun!
Doing our best denise
Same, I agree. You guys are hilarious!@@TalkingWithDocs
It's called Edutainment...lol😂
I’m lactose intolerant and can’t eat eggs either, so I take a probiotic twice a week and it seems to help my stomach feel better along with eating vegetables and drinking lots of water.
I picked up C-Diff after colon surgery and went on an antibiotic protocol, Vancomycin, and took a daily high-potency probiotic to help my gut health. I have been off the antibiotic for three months and continue using the probiotic. The C-Diff has not resurfaced, and I feel the probiotic has helped keep my gut health in balance and the C-Diff from returning.
Glad to hear that
Was the probiotic prescribed?
So true,I have had what they call silent reflux and after taking Align Iam so much better and will keep taking it for a while longer
The more crap you take the more big business likes you.
Guys, do a talk on collagen. I've been taking collagen in powder form for years. What's your take on collagen supplements?
Easy, they'll tell you they don't work because they are not FDA approved. My take, do your own research, there's TONS of scientific papers out there with REAL scientific evidence.
Plain yogurt w/ some fresh fruit & maple syrup, sauerkraut, kimchi, red meat, a little red wine, a little cheese.
You had us until red meat Suzanne 😂
I enjoy your videos and I absolutely like the humor y'all add...we all need humor in our lives!!! Keep the videos coming...I look forward to them
I’m using plain Greek yogurt topically to keep rosacea flares down. It really works! Is it the probiotics in it that is helping?
I have IBS, and life isn't great without taking probiotics. Was originally recommended by my (then) GP. Trouble is I don't know which company I can trust. Was taking Renew Life, but they became inconsistent and recently switched to Webbers which seem to work well but don't entirely trust them. BTW, I take it daily and have for a decade, if I miss one day, its a big issue (blotting, pain, irregularity, etc).
I was always constipated but since taking probiotics I feel better and go more regularly.
Which one helped you? I am currently suffering from that too.
The probiotic is called Culturelle, not “cultural”.
I've had probiotic and prebiotic recommendation from doctors for years without any of them learning what caused my gut problems.
Sorry to hear that. Hope it gets better
Glad to hear that.
What probiotic can someone take for h pylori?
I take Align when taking antibiotics - or actually I take it at a different meal during the course plus a few days after. Was recommended by a very conservative and experienced GI who ordinarily didn't do much too new fangled! The doctor's brand preference was due to it being the only brand with the research behind it.
I love Parmesan cheese. So happy to hear that it can help my gut bacteria. You docs are wonderful! Many thanks!
I've tried probiotics and didn't notice any difference, and as you say they are unregulated so I always worried if they were what they say they are.
I do take digestive enzymes and I find they help my stomach. I've had my gallbladder out and was told it helps. Do you agree?
I have IBS-D. When I have a flare, I find probiotics very helpful. I take Digestive Advantage and Saccromyoces Boulardi.
Thanks for sharing!
Do you contact UFOs too? They can help you.
I've even heard that when we acquire a taste or crave something it can be due to the bugs in our bellies wanting us to eat it, depending what they thrive on, so is a case of, "we are what we eat", or, "we eat what we are"?
Yes unhealthy and processed foods are very disruptive.
You guys are awesome l love your humor actually it helps to reduce stress and lower pressure. Continue the great work. Wonderful drs❤
Yes live cultures for sure. It can help especially in those with gut issues. Sauerkraut too!
Thank you for this video. I'm pleased you bought up the food. It strongly helps me as I suffer badly with my disabilities.
As always it's worth mentioning, that pasteurized probiotic foods from the supermarket don't have any life bacteria in them unless they are added afterwards.
Align works better than others for me. I've tried them all.
They had no idea how to help so 8:23 8:23 I guess we as individuals are the guardians of our health.
"You are in charge of your own health" soooooo true !!
NOTHING!
Wow awesome!!
Just started, no more constipation after 5 years suffering and taking linzess finally I solved my own problem 😔 probiotic change my life
The only time I took probiotics was to counteract C-diff.
That's amazing
I got C.Diff from augmentin. I will never take again. My GI recommended a probiotic to help with gut health so I hope it does help somewhat.
I take probiotics but I am going to finish this bottle and then not take them anymore. I eat almost everything you listed that provides enough bacteria already. Thanks for providing good basic information on a variety of topics that gets us thinking about exploring and asking questions about our own health. You Docs rock!!
You should also stop taking anything not FDA approved by this logic.
I took augmentin about 14 years ago and got cdiff. Since then I Take Align probiotic everyday.
When I have issues with my stomach because I have Gerd, I always eat a yogurt, and it always helps
Thanks for sharing and for watching!
First of all, I love your humor! Bringing humor into learning is the best way of teaching!👍
I love sauerkraut!
You could consider natural sources like sauerkraut and kimchi as well as yogurt
@@TalkingWithDocs thank you so much
I am on Amoxicillin for a UTI now.
Prebiotic help. I have UC and it has helped keep me from flaring along with the usual medication treatment I'm in.
Probiotic*
Another brilliant and interesting video. I really enjoy natural yogurt, cottage cheese, sauerkraut, miso and parmigiana. After following you two fab, funny and informative doctors for some years I feel that you have a cookbook within waiting to be written! Many thanks
David you just may be onto something ... 😜
The so-called miso paste, kimchi, tempeh, natto etc. just a huge campaign of ads for "something" (the nationalism, or politics, or "the soul of capitalism" of, a huge money therefore has been earned universally in the endless space、、、) .🎉😢😅🤬🥳😁
Warned (please don't say I didn't warn you first😢): Korean kimchi has extremely high Nitrites especially in its peak period of the first 3 days, and lasts to the 6th till 20 days.
Wow sorry to hear that. Osteomyelitis is very serious. Glad to hear you are ok now
Really so so sorry to hear about that.
I recommend everyone giving it a read.
great book, unfortunately this industry is all about profit, nothing more, nothing less
I got it, one of the best books ive ever read
that book turned everything around for me
thanks
finished reading it a few days ago. you can see why it was censored by just reading the first chapter. this industry is truly scary
I had an intestinal yeast infection many years ago. i think i might benefit from taking probiotics
Thank you for this informative video. What amount of serving(s) of fermented foods are we looking at, and should we have it every day?
You knocked this very important topic out of the park! Thanks for being voices of reason.
Sorry to hear that. Hope it gets better
Anyway, thanks for the video. take care.
I ❤you both. Trying to Learn both medicine and English from you.
I have got MS & Neuropathy pain. God bless you. Sheida
