I'm a vegan, will be 80 this year. I take a few supplements but not Vitamin C and pay close attention to anti-oxidant/free radical dynamic. I eat a lot of fresh fruits and veg - make it a point to eat vitamin C foods same meal as iron-rich foods (green leaves) to help assimilation of non-heme iron. I'll keep an eye on my yearly blood work for Vitamin C level as I get older. Thanks Docs.

British sailors originally avoided scurvy by consuming lemons, and were switched to limes because they were easily sourced from Britain's Caribbean colonies. This was fine for short trips, but prolonged journeys revealed lime's inadequacy for supplying adequate vitamin C. The excellent 'Cautionary Tales' podcast 'When Limeys Get Scurvy' covers this subject in detail.
As for Linus Pauling, I was fortunate to see him in person doing an anti-nukes speech in Vancouver in the early '80's. He had by then developed the tremulous voice familiar to many 'courtesy' of RFK Jr, but he communicated the tenuousness of our global predicament with alacrity. Thanks for the crappy X-rays tidbit!

I also hang out with people who are younger than I am. Hence, some of my cultural references are too obscure for them. Anita Bryant was a celebrity who was a Miss America runner-up. She sang the Florida Sunshine Tree commercials in the '70s. . . Until her religious zeal cost her a career in show business. She campaigned for school systems to keep gay teachers unemployed. Someone threw a pie in her face during a press conference. That was the last I saw of her. The commercials and the pie incident are on RUclips.

Sorry, it’s not Son of A son of A Sailor, it’s Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes. But it really doesn’t matter, just keep up the good work.

When I get a cold, I crave orange juice. I wish I could remember to drink it - before I get a cold.😬

I take vitamin C and was using Emergen-C still I realized how much sugar is in it, sadly I will use another form now. I don’t get sick often, I mostly get a cold after flying.

"for these poor people who stuck around to the end". LOL. Classic. Thanks for the video and information. I don't take Vitamin C, but am not averse to it. I like the flavor the chewables and kinda wish I had some now....

I had always heard that Pauling had received a gift box of oranges for the holidays. He & his wife ate more oranges than normal & that season neither had any colds. His conclusion was it was due to high consumption of oranges. Don’t know if it’s true or just a story.

I don't take vitamin c but I eat tons of fruits and greens. If I don't get enough vitamin c I will see the difference when I brush my teeth, I will notice bleeding. Thank you for the great videos.

That seems unlikely to be caused by lack of Vit C... unless you eat all your fruit and vegetables every 6 months.

Zinc is supposed to reduce the duration of a cold according to Dr. Greger. Eating whole food plant based and according to cronometer I smash vitamin c and many of the antioxidants, vitamins, bone health, immune support etc supplements I take are b12, vitamin D3, iodine and omega 3 DHA & EPA. Still it's good to be reminded of the importance of nutrition. My doctor in Cyprus recommended powered vitamin c.

I started taking 1000mg Vitamin C about 10 years ago and I haven't had a cold or flu since. Prior to that, on average I would get about one cold per year. Who knows if the Vitamin C was what made the difference but for me, it's worth taking. As you say, it's inexpensive and doesn't do me any harm (that I know of) so I would rather not have to endure colds if I can help it. 😀

Thanks for pronouncing Oregon right. That's where I'm from. Interesting that you don't absorb Vit C as well as you age. I used to take Vitamin C but then I stopped for no reason really. Wow, Linus Pauling was so smart. I noticed he had a large head. Do you think people with larger heads/brains are smarter? I think there are probably people with small heads that are smart too, but it does seem like larger headed people tend to be smarter. But then birds have little heads and brains and they seem really smart to me. Great video. Thank you.

I have been susceptible to colds all my life. I have had pneumonia 5 times in my life (age 80.6). After reading Dr. Pauling's book, I took Vit. C by the handful for several years. My conclusion was that it may have lessened my cold symptoms but not enough to warrant a potential damaging dose. I never stopped completely but I sometimes wonder if several of my autoimmune conditions were caused by taking large doses in the past.

When my sister and I were kids and started to get a cold, my mom would keep giving us vitamin C until we got Diarrhea. She swore that would knock the cold out, but we needed to take it until we got the big D. It always seemed to work! (for the Diarrhea anyway). 🤣
