Hello beanie baby! I've been using oil pastels for a time now but the pack I started with is almost finished, I'd like to know if there's a pack you can recommend! I love your art, even using shitty pastels you make fabulous art. Thanks for reading, love ya'!
These are the only oil pastels I have because they're so cheap haha. They're ok but they don't blend too well especially when there's lots of layers. The packaging is different in the UK Instagram is @by_emilyy btw 😉
It's not just you, they are a harder pastel in general (though I wonder if they are different in Japan). I think they are better used for underdrawing and hard edges/lines. A brand I would recommend if you can get a hold of them at the Caran Dache NeoPastels. They are admittedly not very big (slightly thicker than the Pentals), but they are much creamer (like the Mungyo or Sennelier pastels). Don't confuse the NeoPastels for the NeoColor 1 and NeoColor 2, NeoColor 1 are more wax-based and the NeoColor 2 are watersoluable.
Agree with the smell, the worst smelling art supplies ever ,,, mine were also dry and couldn't later . Maybe they are just too cheap? I've used less expensive ones too but these might be the worst
Oh, those are not the worst, believe me. When I started using Pentel Oil Pastels, I felt like it was a blessing. I used to use another brand that had much bigger sticks but they were so hard and impossible to blend. I admit that they do smell bad, but they don't bother me THAT much.

I use these oil pastels all the time. I’d say they’re some of the worst quality pastels, but... I enjoy using them. There’s something about the texture and the consistency of the pigment, while really shoddy, feel interesting to me. They come off as a bit more translucent sometimes and when layered I feel like a get something unique and different that I don’t quite get from the better quality pastels. I try to utilize what I feel are the strengths of the product y’know? If I want to get a different result, like something that layers really opaque or blends really well, then I have to use a different type of pastel. Also I never really notice a bad smell from them lol I like your drawing though came out really nice.
Pentel were the first oil pastels I ever bought, and OH BOY it was different when I bought some Mungyo Gallery. Cannot even believe I drew so many pictures with those Pentels now.
@@BlackBeanCMS Not the OP, but I tried the 24-colors that I borrowed from my gf, and they didn't smell at all! I dunno if you had a bad batch, or different countries get it from different factories. I'm also from Brasil, and I can confirm that Pentel is the only reasonable option, cost-wise. Any other brand is like 2, 3, 5 times expensive - even crayola :/
Have you tried heating the pastels up on a mug warmer and using them? Like you heat the mug warmer up and then touch the tip on to heat it a little and then use it on the paper. The color is amazing and the mixing experience is better
I would love to see you review the Paul Rubens Oil Pastels and also Caran D'ache Neopastel. Love your videos. Thank you for being you. You're a sweetheart. Much love from Nashville TN USA 🇺🇸 ❤ God bless yall
Oddly reassuring to know it wasn't just the box I got that smelled like a mechanics garage... Eventually had to throw them out because the stink just did not go away even months later...
Ok can I just tell you... I just started to play with oil pastels and bought this exact set because I think it was $6 on sale. I thought it would be good for a first set, and they served their purpose. That said... I agree with you 💯 about the stank! Good Lord! I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am to have found your channel!! Not only are you an AMAZING artist, but the funniest one I’ve ever seen. I absolutely love how you incorporate humor into art (or art into humor if you will). Thank you for doing what you do and inspiring a novice artist. ❤️
I use Pentel and I agree that they are too thin and I want them to blend better. I do like them more than Crayola though. I found Crayola to be dry and too crumbly. Sorry about the stank!! Sounds like a bad box!
I feel like there was either a formula change or just a bad batch along the line because I got a stinky batch and nowhere else had mentioned a smell before. You may have gotten an older one or just been lucky not to get a stink box.
My brother bought ones when he was on college (2016) and now (2021) still doesn't smell like gasoline. So maybe they change something, gotta buy other ones because they are cheap.
I've definitely used some horrid oil pastels in my day. Artist's Loft oil pastels are just dry crayons. I don't think I've ever used any that smell bad though. That's new!
@@EmeralEden How did you end up liking them? It's possible the ones I have were just a cheap version of them because they came in a big set of their stuff I got as a gift. I found a new use for them though. They're kind of like colored charcoal or nice chalk, so I'm ok with that.
Omg I love your reviews! And you inspired me to do oil pastel work as well! These were the first oil pastels I ever bought and I think I got a good batch, but I do agree the smell and the size is not the best. But I love all the colors you get! I’ve been on the hunt for the 28 pack of crayola oil pastels and they are literally sold out everywhere here in the Bay Area! I might have to buy them online. Anyways, i just want to say thank you again for inspiring me and others to do oil pastel work and to stay creative! I look forward to all your videos and artwork! 💕
I bought my Pentels Oil Pastels from my local charity store; they’ve already been used but not that much, and honestly as a beginner I really like them. They’re nice and creamy, and some are a little harder which really helps me with blending. I’m no expert, but I’d definitely suggest them for beginners. Plus the smell is kinda nostalgic for me, reminds me of being a kid I love it 😅
I have been watching you since fall 2020 and I'm so so glad I did. You have brought a lot of smiles and happiness since you came into ma life. I'm a happy bean
These were my first oil pastels back in 1994 when I was a teen and my mother kindly bought me them. I could never use them for the same reason, but they still had that sentimental value to me. But they made me absolutely hate oil pastels until I found your channel and tried also the Caran D`Ache wax pastels Neocolor II that made me get curious about the oil pastels again. Now I just love them and after watching your review of the Mungyo, I purchased the 48 pack. They are a dream. Now I use oil pastels for my children`s illustrations and the amazing soft chalk pastels for realistic paintings. Thank you for that. Happy new year, hope you stay creative and juicy! :-) Cheers from Norway!
i just started the video, and i just wanted to let you know how much your art and vision really inspires me!! I love you as well as your personality and work you put into these videos. Love u!!!
Juiciest first throat grab of 2021! 👏😆 💖 You compell me to try oil pastels again as an adult. As a child, I had the worst mental tantrums with my immaturity in using them properly. Thank you for demonstrating great temperance for using oil pastels that you weren't particularly crazy about. It's makes for very refreshing content. 👌
I've been waiting for this because I have these. Edit: I've heard a few reviews saying they smell but I think it might be for only a few shades because it seems to mostly happen for people that try the 48/50 packs but not much for anyone with 24 or less colors. And I bought myself the Classpack (since it was on sell for $27) so I can go ham and just learn but there still is no strong smell from mine.
You are the hilight of the beginning of this year THANK YOU! I cannot be in a bad mood watching you! I use these pastels because, easy access but I agree with all of it. Not my favorite and yes they smell and break very easily.
I have these and they are actually really soft and creamy but they get used up super quick. I’ll probably get other pastels in the future. I didn’t get much smell but if I do lean in a bit closer to the art of container they definitely have a smell!
I'm a beginner who uses oil and soft pastels and I had heard such a good reviews about Pentel Box, that I purchased them as my very first oil pastel box, and I was devastated! They're dry, they stink, they break easily, and I can't even blend them or do the layering. They gave me depression for a few weeks and I just kind of gave up on using oil pastel in general.
We have such highly scented ( mostly weird) rough dry pastels in india, smaller in size and miss pigments !!😂 I was enjoying you getting irritated, it was like me missing great brand products herein 😭
I dragged out all of my oil pastels tonight and decided to actually try to figure out how to use them. I've had CrayPas for decades - maybe since the 60s - but they just took up space. I came here after watching Lindsey, the Frugal Crafter's video on oil pastels. I've had my box for 3 years, but because I thought I was ordering something else, when they came, I didn't even do more than look at them. They remained encased in the plastic on top and bottom. Tonight, I was amazed how much they smelled like an old garage - the kind where you used to go to get your car fixed. I'm assuming the oil is petroleum based, too. They aren't too hard - at least they are softer than the ancient CrayPas. I flipped them out onto a tray so most of the sticks would be exposed to air and I'm hoping it will dissipate.
Sadly, these are the only ones available in my city and that I can buy. I think you did a miracle blending those colors because when I used it seemed like crayons and smelled like it too
After watching your Sennelier video, I got inspired and ordered my very first Sennelier set. I just got a small set with metallic colors. I’m not a pastel artist but I absolutely love your art and I have to tell you that I really enjoy that set. They feel like Chanel lipstick. Amazing. Thank you for sharing and congratulations 🎈🎊🎈🎉for you 90K subscribers. You desert it❄️⛄️❄️
I've had a set of 25 since 2014 - mine are not stinky though. The quality is... not great, but I'm only a beginner in oil pastels so it doesn't really bother me! Maybe I just don't know better haha. I also like to do smaller artworks so the pastel size works for me :) Happy 2021! Looking forward to more reviews!
I'm amazed you were able to make such neat drawing with these. I've bought it to learn how to use pastels and I can barely use it at all, it's just too dry. Good too know pastels are not supposed to have this texture (or smell).
doing oil pastel research because i’ve had some for years and wanna give em a go…of course this is the brand i have 😅 still gonna play with them!! at least mine don’t smell LOL so excited to have found your channel!! not just for your art but your personality as well
These are the only oil pastels I started using (I do digital but want to delve into traditional art) and I do agree when you first get these the smell makes you light headed. Fetching them from the depths after a year thanks to your inspiring videos, the smell is pretty much gone, but my god it was an absolute STRUGGLE when it comes to the dotty technique and layering! When you try to put another colour on top for a painterly effect it's impossible, the colours mush together. The colours are still rich and vibrant but I would only use these as a base layer or to fill a large area/blending. I'm now shopping for either Paul Rubens or Mungyo to see how they are comparison to the Pentels.
I have a 36 pentel set. I did notice it was hard to blend but I thought that was just me since I've never really used them before. Good to know I'm not the only one.
Haiii I'm such a huge fan u inspire me to keep on doing art I have had problems and anxiety about coming out to my parents as gay and when I'm sad I watch ur videos to make me happy it would mean the world to me if u responded with some advice : )
First of all I want to say congratulations! For me, it took a while to be comfortable with myself. It can be a struggle but be proud that you are finally wanting living your truth! Unfortunately, I really couldn't give you much advice. Everyone's life experience and environment is different. I was 20 when I came out and I was still terrified. I will say this, only you will know when you are ready. I suggest you make sure you are in a safe space. And no matter what be proud of who you are! The fear of hiding the real you won't last forever! Good luck to you friend! ☺️
I get that you're a pro who likes pro materials, but it was really awesome getting your opinion and seeing your process on the level of something **I** can afford. So thanks.
You got me into oil pastels and these are the only brand I have ever tried. I've run into the crumbly, not blending problem as well so I'm glad it's not just me lol
I don't know if the formula varies from country to country, but I'm from Brazil and just bought those and they almost don't smell like nothing, I just notice smell if I reeeeeally get them close to my nose (and we are not doing that in here babes LOL). So sorry that you didn't have a good experience with them. Love uuu, you're a inspiration
Aw baby, I wish I would have known that you were even CONSIDERING using these lol. I got as far as doing a small bunch of violets because the smell alone gave me a dizzy headache. Literally had to take them outside. Scratchy, don't blend, dry af... I don't like them. I guess I got dry and stink too. I ain't moist either lol. But thanks for taking one for the team.
I would love to see you try a medium/paint/art supply you think is kinda scary, intimidating or just new to you! Would be fun to see your usual faces in, for example, watercolour ☺️👌🏻 great video as usual!
I do use them. I didn’t get the smell. But, but, but they are dry. I’m a beginner using oil pastels. So, I’m just learning. I normally paint with acrylic’s on canvas. Love your work!
I just bought these… and I’ve used nice pastels before. But I had to look through your videos to see if you’ve done a review of them cuz I had to know if I was crazy for thinking they smelled like straight gasoline - glad I’m not crazy lol. The pilling/crumbling was on par with my experience too.
These are the only oil pastels I have ever used and the smell was one of the reasons I didn’t try other brands because I assumed they all smelled like that.
I found some old Pentels in my stash and I'm using them to establish background color and I have ordered more (still waiting for delivery) because of price and I'll let you know what happens--I'm a little nervous now--didn't have any stink with these old Pentels. I got Crayolas on watching you and they are fine and dandy. I would like you to give an opinion on Van Gogh oil pastels. I use to get individual pieces from my local art stores and now they are hard to find--they are made by Royal Talens. You're great. ro.
I found your channel bc i bought those and I wanted to try something new yk. It was so cheap that bought it and, actually, I was looking for dry pastels (well, in a way i got it hahah) and looking your videos that made me think that, perhaps, the pentels were really dry and hard, I didn't have any references so... Mine stink and don't blend well too. I love your videos, you inspire me! ^^
As someone who used these all of high school I totally agree with the things you were saying about these. I always felt they were dry and not made for blending or layering 😬
ok the first time i watched this i was like “omg no i love pentel pastels” but since then i’ve used pastel a lot more, i know what kind of effect i want to get, and i’ve followed a lot more artists who use oil pastels. and let me just say, now i feel kinda cheated. i used them bc i had them but they are SO. WAXY. and they break SO MUCH. and now i know there are others that are creamier and don’t break??? anyway thank you so much for this revelation
Pentel arts are the first oil pastel ive got. Some are dry but some are not. They dont stink that much. They get a bit flaky when i try to do much layering. They are not the that wxpenaive here in my country. I also made some good stuff with that. I learns how they works so i think that it. Love all you juicy beans! Keep creating
Ahhh I love you!! You make me want to do oil pastels again even though I'm 20 now and the last time I used them was in 3rd grade😂😭 I bought the pentel ones but I haven't even opened them but I've used CrayPas all those years ago. Hi CMS, It is Jobina again. I'm logged in at work this time. Its the end of the school day and I was excited to see your video. I couldn't wait until I got home. I am ashamed to admit, I order these pastels every year for my students to use in class and I have never smelled them until today. You are right , they do stink. And I smelled the new set. Your packaging is the old package. Nevertheless, they both stink. Although, I know how to use oil pastels, I do not use them that often. And when I do use them, I use gallery mungyo. So I never notice the poor quality of pentel. I chose this set for the students because of the many colors the 50 pack offers and the low price. After looking at your other work and then looking at this review. Comparing the two, it does seem that the crayola is better than the pentel. I think I was one of the people that recommended on a comment in the past for you to try the pentel. I am sorry to put you through that. I have however recently tried the Caran D' ache neo pastels and I love them. I am debating if I like them better than gallery or not. I'm thinking I am going to do a comparing video of the gallery versus the Caran D' Ache neopastels and compare the crayola to pentel. Feel free to use the same concept for your video if you want. You have probably already thought of that anyway. After watching your video, I can say I am going to rethink which oil pastels I will order in the future for my students. Perhaps I will switch to Crayola and use one of your videos as a demonstration tutorial for my students in class, when we do that lesson. Now you have me excited about comparing crayola to pentel. Again I am sorry, I had no idea. Thanks for your review. It was very informative.

Any other brand is like 2, 3, 5 times expensive - even crayola :/
muito chato ter poucas opções :/ vc consegue misturar bem?
Eu já ia comprar um desses da pentel aqui na Kalunga... e só tem deles mesmo kkkkkk
Have you tried heating the pastels up on a mug warmer and using them? Like you heat the mug warmer up and then touch the tip on to heat it a little and then use it on the paper. The color is amazing and the mixing experience is better
Sir your art is just too great, you could use anything and it turns out immaculate.
I would love to see you review the Paul Rubens Oil Pastels and also Caran D'ache Neopastel. Love your videos. Thank you for being you. You're a sweetheart. Much love from Nashville TN USA 🇺🇸 ❤ God bless yall
I agree, I'd love to see those reviewed too!
Oooh me too on the Rubens!
Thank you for sharing, because I almost bought them! YOU ARE A SAVIOR !!!!! On to watch your other Oil Pastels reviews =)
mine doesn´t stink at all, lol. they´re not great, the purples are really dry, but the blues and pinks are great...
😂 you are hilarious! But you seriously got me with that throat grab. I did scream very loud.
😊😂😅
Hahahaha!! 😂😂😂❤️
The messy art shirt/apron. 😭😭😭😭😭.
A true artist!!! & your personality makes me so happy
I bought this set in July/2020 and they didn't stink at all...
I feel like there was either a formula change or just a bad batch along the line because I got a stinky batch and nowhere else had mentioned a smell before. You may have gotten an older one or just been lucky not to get a stink box.
There was a formula change, I have an old packet as well and they smell fine.
They added more solvent so that they last longer and add fluidity.
I bought these in February 2020 and they stink quite bad
My brother bought ones when he was on college (2016) and now (2021) still doesn't smell like gasoline. So maybe they change something, gotta buy other ones because they are cheap.
I've definitely used some horrid oil pastels in my day. Artist's Loft oil pastels are just dry crayons. I don't think I've ever used any that smell bad though. That's new!
Nooo, i just bought the artist loft ones 💀😭
@@EmeralEden How did you end up liking them? It's possible the ones I have were just a cheap version of them because they came in a big set of their stuff I got as a gift. I found a new use for them though. They're kind of like colored charcoal or nice chalk, so I'm ok with that.
This brought back trauma from art class in primary school 😭😭😭
Haha!
Plus the smell is kinda nostalgic for me, reminds me of being a kid I love it 😅
wow look at u using more green! the growth 😤💚 (love u fr bro, u can always make me smile)
I love your honest reviews such as this one, can't wait to see more.
I had these and thought ‘yay THATS why my attempts look awful’, then I saw your brilliant drawing and thought again 😂😂
I have been watching you since fall 2020 and I'm so so glad I did. You have brought a lot of smiles and happiness since you came into ma life. I'm a happy bean
every time I watch you make art it inspires me to make art because your work is so gorgeous. ty 💗
👏😆 💖
You compell me to try oil pastels again as an adult.
The way you blend colors is beautiful!!! 💖
i found this video while i was making some watercolor paint and it was exactly the mood i needed
I think you did a miracle blending those colors because when I used it seemed like crayons and smelled like it too
EARLY MODE
love your videos btw, your enthusiastic energy is rlly refreshing to see and you've got real talent so keep it up ! ❤️
Thank you!!
You desert it❄️⛄️❄️
OMG UR ART IS SO PRETTY OMG!!!!
If your a Filipino student... This gives a memory to your poster making 😂
The scream before you scratched snatched my soul right out of my body. 😆
You didn’t say a DAMN word about sketching in green, I am so proud!
Always so excited when you post a video🧚
Fabulous video as always! I'd love to see you draw the faun from Pan's Labyrinth 😍
I've had a set of 25 since 2014 - mine are not stinky though. The quality is... not great, but I'm only a beginner in oil pastels so it doesn't really bother me! Maybe I just don't know better haha. I also like to do smaller artworks so the pastel size works for me :)
Happy 2021! Looking forward to more reviews!
Yes 🙌 I love ur reviews!!
Thank you for coming back 🥺❤️
No problem! They’re so fun! 😛
I'm amazed you were able to make such neat drawing with these. I've bought it to learn how to use pastels and I can barely use it at all, it's just too dry. Good too know pastels are not supposed to have this texture (or smell).
This is literally all I can buy from art stores in my country that comes in a large set, other than pastel pencils
doing oil pastel research because i’ve had some for years and wanna give em a go…of course this is the brand i have 😅 still gonna play with them!! at least mine don’t smell LOL so excited to have found your channel!! not just for your art but your personality as well
I'm not impressed... I've heard things about that brand that made me hesitate, glad you confirmed them! I love my gallery pastels... they're amazing
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's heard about Pentel. Oh my gosh! I love Gallery so much!!!!
I bought them partially cuz of you!
Your videos are golden!! I hope this year brings you even more success 😊💜
I’m so happy to have found a new art RUclipsr! I really wanna try RUclips myself so yes subscribed can’t wait to binge watch your videos ✨✨🐌
i used these in high school and i was unaware they weren’t supposed to smell like that. but yeah they are very hard to move around on the paper.
one of the best things about 2020 was finding you🥺👉🏻👈🏻💜
These are the only oil pastels I started using (I do digital but want to delve into traditional art) and I do agree when you first get these the smell makes you light headed.
I'm now shopping for either Paul Rubens or Mungyo to see how they are comparison to the Pentels.
i’m so excited for the next oil paint video!
I have a 36 pentel set. I did notice it was hard to blend but I thought that was just me since I've never really used them before. Good to know I'm not the only one.
Glad you did this video. I've always had issues with my Pentels. Glad it wasn't just me.
Your oil pastel reviews are the only ones I will ever watch 🤣💖💖🤞🏽
Your colour mixing is amazing.
These gave me such a headache - the smell filled the room! How you were able to make such art with these is beyond me!
I get that you're a pro who likes pro materials, but it was really awesome getting your opinion and seeing your process on the level of something **I** can afford. So thanks.
I was about to buy these to start off, and I'm so glad I watched your video!
Okay so, you may be disappointed in the tools. But your drawing? It is amazing and you truly proved here that its not the tools that make the artist.
Happy new year little bean ! Take care of yourself and stay safe ❤
I am pumped for when you reach 100k!!!
You mentioned the smell so much that I’m afraid to try them for myself lol I rather stay with my gallery lol
You're great. ro.
i have to use these for a project and you’re so right about the smell omg
For a video I'd love to see a Q and Art where we ask you shit and you answer them while doing art stuffs!!
This brand is the only one I've ever used and I do wanna try different brands but for how easily I can just pick up a pack and all the cute little colors you can get I like them🎶 Im not sensitive to alot of the smells of my supplies so I need to go home and sniff mine👀 you make me want to try the crayola ones to start branching out in✨ great video and Tyvm for sharing your thoughts🎶
YOU'RE ALMOST AT 100,000 🎉🎉
Hi CMS, It is Jobina again.
