This. As I was reading your comment it was almost exactly what I wanted to say. I use different mediums, the genre and my style are vastly different. But his work is incredible. I honestly think doing a study of his work would do me A LOT of good. To get outside my comfort zone, be more loose and expressive, and play with unexpected colors. I actually bought this set of pastels a while ago, so I'll take this as my sign.

I like these, but not for a whole picture. Because yes, these are STICKY, that is exactly what I thought when I first used them, my goodness are they ever sticky. I also find them quite inconsistent. Many of the colors are nice and creamy and opaque, and then you get some inbetween that are transparent and feel like a glue stick. I like them, and I would buy them again for what they cost, I think they are a really good value, but I do not want to use them just on their own. My favorite oil pastels are Mungyo Soft and Neopastel, which I find very similar to eachother. I like that smooth even type of creaminess. This sticky thing about the Paul Rubens does make things difficult for me. And man, I am glad that someone else has finally mentioned it, because with all these positive reviews, I was feeling like I am the only one who finds that an issue. I like to start out with a harder pastel and then take the Paul Rubens to add the final layer, I think that works really great, but I have not enjoyed doing the full work with the Paul Rubens.

I clicked sooooo fast. These were the first oil pastels I ever used and bought. I commented once or twice wanting you to review them because I was undecided. The crumbles were frustrating for me too! but I found if i left the crumbs on for a day or two they seemed to dry out and lose the stickiness so I could brush the piece carefully. With the shiny finish of each piece it just made me more aware of how my fingers were being used so any prints on the piece were done purposefully. Also a q-tip enabled me to smudge in finer detail and some areas honestly I found were best not being smudged AT ALL. I’m AGAIN so glad you reviewed these. The first piece you did was my favourite and the fixident really helped the colours to POP.

Genuinely glad I caught this. I've got watercolors from Paul Rubens and I definitely know the feeling of having to just play with them and get used to them. I love them though and I've been curious about oil pastels after getting a Faber Castell set in an art box. Im glad to hear basically the same thing that I heard about their watercolors: mid-ish quality at a good price. Putting these on my amazon wish list right now.
P.s. my fave was the flat top boy.

This was an EXCELLENT review. You gave all the pros and cons. I like creamy but with sticky crumbles the side of my hand will mush them around. Still I might try them. I always learn so much from you- I like that you pointed out the values were less dark when you blended- but it looked a lot better with the fixative. Anyway, you’re truly the best and love watching you do op. I would watch a whole op painting in real time without skipped parts or speeded up if you posed that.

I'm on my second box of the Paul Rueben oil pastels. I started with Sennelier but I'm a new artist and Sennelier is really pricey. I love Sennelier bc they're like lipstick and the colors are amazing. I'm a big fan of the uber soft oil pastels. I agree Paul Rueben OP's are a decent Sennelier knock-off which is why I use them. I love the blendability of PR. And I do love the colors, however you're right, there is some inconsistencies with creaminess and they do tend to be a little shiney. Neither of those things stop me from using them.

There have been older products in Europe branded with the name Rubens, though Idk about that one being a renowned elite brand. This Paul Rubens seems to just have been getting their foot into the European market within the last ~5ish years, the products seem kind of hit or miss but mostly surprisingly good for the price.

I think the difference may be with creamer oil pastels, it gets deeper into the paper, which means the white of the paper isn't showing through, making the colors look dull.
The creaminess would make the blending easier and the two colors become muddy when combined because the pigments would mix together more than with a dryer pastel.

Oh man, I wish I’d watched this before ordering these. I just opened my box and was like “whoa, these are sticky…” and looked up reviews and found yours…I adore your work and didn’t even realise you’d reviewed these! 😅
I’m still gonna give these a try…after all, I already paid for them… I haven’t used oil pastels since high school, and that was my predominant medium… I wanted to get back in to that and see what I can do with the experience I’ve gained since then in developing my art style, but I’m nervous. After watching your review, I’m super nervous!! 😅😅 I think I used to use whatever random supplies the school had, so probably old and hard pastels.
I’m gonna give it a go, though (and watch your reviews before I spend any more!) 😂🎉

You have got to find a set of Ooly Twisty Stix! I got mine at an Art museum gift shop and haven't been able to find them since, but I love them. They are my gold standard

I just discovered Holbein student oil pastels. In Australia, everything is more expensive (roll eyes) and I found them for only $1.25 each! I bought 18 colours to try out. I've always disliked oil pastels becuase of how messy they can get. But through your videos, I want to try it out and love them lol. Maybe give those a go and let me know if they're good oil pastels (clearly I wouldn't have a clue whether theyre deemed good or not)

Always love your content! You’ve inspired me so much over the past two years. Your videos introduced me to oil pastels and I have loved them since. Plus you’re left handed which has truly been helpful to me as I learn more about Art.
I have used a few different oil pastels including the mungyo and crayola, but my affordable go to oil pastel is from hobby lobby. The Master’s Touch Premium Soft Oil Pastels from hobby lobby are pretty decent and I would love it if you tried them out! Also, added the Paul Rubens to my Amazon cart 😂
Again thank you for sharing your passion, creativity, and talent with me and the rest of this weird world!
    Stay Awesome!!! 🤩🥰

It was so expressive and proud and I was fully entranced by the scratchy scratchy you did all over it. I love your use of every colour. You use so much of your heart in your art and it shows! I don't know your name or what cms stands for, sorry but I'm old hun, but I really love your art and I think you are totally brilliant. God bless you hun.
