Ways to blend oil pastels: 1. Always better to put base layers down first because once that pastel dust touches anything, it is stained for good. 2. Dont press too hard That is when you start to get the oily waxy build up which causes the next colour to peel off they layer underneath rather than putting anything on. If you have used oil paints, it is pretty much the same problem. In oil paints we tend to wipe the excess oil. Not something we can do here though. Which is why we use paper with more tooth so it can hold more layers of pigment. The lesser the tooth, the sooner that peeling business starts. 2. Once you have a decent amount of layers, you can use tissue, Q-tip/cotton bud for blending them. 3. you can also use a solvent like baby oil or gamsol or something applied with a brush. That helps with the peely problem. 4. Also all colours wont feel the same. Some colours like white, yellow, some reds and browns, brownish greens are utterly smooth and good for blending. The blues tend to be on the scratchier side. That is because of the colour pigment and how it is stabilised. you get used to working with them. Also, if some colours are being too tough, use one of the softer colours to blend (like white in lighter areas or maybe a dark green if the shade calls for it) 5. oil pastels dont have to have a rugged look. They can actually produce pretty realistic, almost oil painting like art. Depends on the style you choose. But yeah, they are definitely more organic looking than something like alcohol markers - if that makes sense. Hope you try them again with all of these things in mind.
I would like to see chalk pastels after this, I love using them. For oil pastels, I recommend having an exacto knife to shave off stray colors that stick to your white or other pastels. For some smooth blending you could also use a little, and I mean a little, alcohol or paint thinner to blend the pastels. Just make sure you use the right paper. Nice work!
Don’t use fingers unless you cover them with a piece of cloth, else you’ll end up depositing oils and impurities from the skin which could cause yellowing
Yaay! The bunnies are back! hopefully you wont be too offended if i clicked as soon as i got the notification was to see if the bunnies are back xD id still watch the video i just clicked faster than usual cuz of the bunnies since they are soo cute
Quick tip I learned in art school for blending with oil pastels: get a bunch of extra white pastels and use them to lay a base layer on the paper. The easiest way I've found is to take off the label from the pastel and use the side of the pastel to fill as much surface area as possible. You can tape off the edges of the paper to get a clean edge. With the white underlayer, the other pastels should melt right into it and be super easy to blend.
The best way to blend both oil pastels as well as charcoal is a paper "pencil" that is just very tightly rolled paper. It has a good tip and if you know what they look like it you can just make your own. It give a great smooth texture with pastels
Really enjoy the relaxed style of these recent videos🙂. I would love to see you make a really cool piece of artwork using these pastels in a future video!
I was given these pastels in art therapy and I found that they worked best for me when I carefully streaked the color across the relevant area (really light, as if I was hinting at shading) and then smeared the color with my fingertips. That gave me a somewhat even color on which I could build up my drawing. I tried using a q-tip for more control and it works passably well for my purposes.
Aww cute rabbits! Sasuke the rabbit is in ninja mode hehe! Hope that you'll make a video about watching oil pastel tutorials and have some oil pastel drawing retrospective attempt after seeing them. ::
Can I just compliment you on being a good bunny parent? Keeping them enclosed while outside with a large enough area, making sure they have somewhere to hide in said enclosure, getting down to their lever and speaking in gentle tones. Excellent bunny parenting.
Your videos are so entertaining thanks to your limitless talent but also your personality which brings a lot, fortunately that I took over the drawing it allowed me to fall on your channel
Hey there, newer subby.... Ive seen people use a blending stump to blend out the colors... or even their fingers. Dont be afraid to get a little dirty!
I like both but the oil pastels are most definitely great for blending from what I see. They’re both convenient for whatever style you’re intending to go for. Nice video!
Oil pastels are some of favorite to work with. You will find it to be smooth blending if you get your fingers dirty. A small line will smudge a long way and blend like no other. Love the work!
First of all, you naming your rabbit Sasuke is great. Secondly, I'd Iove to see u do another piece with oil pastels now that you've got a groove to using them. Lastly, you're cool, stay cool... and stay safe!!
Oil pastels over Crayons definitely! I might try them also, I’ve always been a color pencil and Markers guy but you’re encouraging me to try other things out.
I have Pental oil pastels which I really like. Depending on what I'm doing I sometimes use them wet, dipping the end into a small amount of water and using them like a stick of paint.
I prefer...no, I love the oil pastel side! You made another piece of art ADCArtAttack...even if all that mess on the sheet makes me crazy! Ah ah ah ah! The blending of the colours, how vibrant and defined they are and above all...the amusement they gave you that you made me feel: all these parts are great together! I hope you can work with them soon, I wish you and your lovely family (wife and...killer bunnies) to stay safe and to have a very nice day.
LOL, I'm loving your videos. I've done a lot of work with charcoal and it also leaves residue like crayon and pastel you want to pick a soft bristle brush for brushing them off the page and avoid smearing the picture. Great vids man keep up the good work
There’s no competition. The vibrancy of the oils alone is enough to win... but that blending! 😮 I do wish they had a finer point like the crayons, though.
I'm quite late, and I am not the best with oil pastels but when I tried them out I saw some videos suggesting to use a black coloured pencil for doing line work. I think this will definitely help with drawing the lines for the webs. I really love your art style and your videos all super helpful, keep up the great work!
YES I’m so happy you finally got to this! It hilarious because I used these for the first time in grade school (crayons too) so your reactions just remind me of 3rd grade art class😂😂
It's wild how good this looks on a first go. Pastels are like poker in that learning the game is easy but mastering it takes a lifetime unless you're you. Bravo.
I really like your "I tried ... for the first time" videos :) i really enjoy watching you draw / paint. And i also like your asmr videos. I'm watching these every evening before sleep. Thanks for all these videos! :)
As others have already said, using cotton swabs (q-tips) to blend as well as trying the swabs with a bit of baby oil really blends well. I recommend trying them on a slightly more textured paper like colored construction paper or the Canson brand artist papers (they come in many colors). I like using a toned or colored paper for my pastels and I always buy extra white pastels for blending. To keep them neater try blocking colors in instead of blending on top of each other. Once you've blocked them in you can blend with cotton swabs (with or w/o baby oil).
We often use oil pastels at school and, I really have to tell you, you actually need to use your fingers to blend the colors together. The heat and friction motion is what will "melt" the medium and blend the colors, plus the natural oil that's already on your skin helps alot too. Just a quick warning though, if you think that technic was messy, wait until you get them all over your hands, boy it's nasty! ...but you will get much better results :). Other than that, I'm newly subscribed to your channel and I want to say, I really love your work, it's amazing and you're really talented :D!!
I have only used them as a background. Laying down a couple colors, and with my finger, rubbing, moving the pigment around to get a nice blend. I don't use as much of the stick as you might think, as I don't "color" with them. I move color around. You might try this technique for a more freestyle look.
Love your vids!!!! But I had no idea you had buns!!!!! My wife and u had a bonded couple (husbun and wife) they both passed a couple months ago within 2 days of each other. Was seriously one of the saddest times of my life. Your videos helped me to cope. Now that u know you have buns that just makes it that much better!! Keep making great content and you'll always have a supporter in me!!!!!!
Okay, first of all-great video! So, here is an idea I figured out as I want to keep my oilpastell art safe and laminate it. I did thick (!) layer of oilpastell on aquarell paper. It looked like anHundertwasser. Then I put it in a plastiksheet-thingy and laminated it. It was ruined, but cool at the same time! So I did some experiments with my iron and more art. Have fun trying! Yes, I had fun experimenting and enjoyed it so much! Greetings!
Hey, I loved your painting! I'm an artist too, yesterday I did an oil pastel painting and I used some techniques that I learned on tiktok. You did very good! Say hello tô Brazil!
This was so fun. The bits that come off are annoying, I think they do that more when they’re cheaper, though these are fairly good. Sometimes they’re scratchy due to a coating that should come off when they’re used more, idk. I love when you found the right angle to blend but then said it would make your hand hurt, the way you said it was funny, but ouch. I like using oil pastels occasionally, I find it a faff to blend and hard to do details, but they’re so vibrant and immediate.
Thank you for all your videos as someone whose trying to figure out my style and preferences am happy to see someone I look up to be willing to try new thing
you can use a blending stick (same one you use for charcoal) or a tissue or a cotton swab to do the blending and smooth out the picture texture as a whole. But also helps with color layering with no pilling.
BUNNIES! They're so big now. I love oil pastels but they do take a while to get used to.. I usually dont do lining with them but for the first time use you did great! I prefer the oil pastel because it looked more professional. Great work man
I really like the oil pastels not only do they leave a vibrant rich color also can blend beautifully to add so much depth and features! While the crayons are a bit washed out but I think are really good for less depth detail & simplified drawing technique.
I always liked to do a mixed medium with oil pastels. Like doing main art with colored pencils for the control and the pastels for the backgrounds. They can make amazing effects.
I recently just started oil pastels too and I watched a couple of videos and they say using a fluffy watercolor or paint brush to wipe away the access and it really helps and you can scrape to add a little texture but it looks amazing you are so talented 😍I love watching your videos was watching the video while writing this 😂
Now, one thing about oil pastels. Lay down your colour/s, then use the pad of a finger to rub it in. This is how you truly blend them and ensure the white dots where colour didn't saturate are filled in. Next, you should try out watersoluable oil pastels, they are amazing. Recently watched an artist draw a My Neighbour Totoro scene with them, and it was phenomenal.
haha i just bought some oil crayons and googled oil crayons and your video popped up. it's my first time with oil crayons too, after recently purchasing childrens crayons to paint a little...just like you i instinctively did the swatch tests, blend test AND then *tried to blend with the finger*! the blend you got in the neck is just...ahhh so lovely! new subbie! 🙂 thanks for a great video 🙂 i definitely prefer the oil side more!
The girls and I loved this! I think the natural thing for you would be to underlayer with markers and do blending on foreground figures with these pastels. I've worked oil craypas before when I was trying to get a chirascurrio effect. It's more like painting but you get to sculpt the color layers... For the webbing, put down thick black lines, color over them and then scratch the oil off to reveal the black lines underneath. OK, anyway, a large TMNT (in the original style), full color... Pencils, ink, markers, and oil pastels....
i am not a artist and i have never use oil pastels but i have seen many ppl using napkins folded to smooth and blend and looks amazing smooth . you did amazing job as well i am really glad that youtube put your video as recommend >>^.^>^.^
That’s dope! I’m always learning something from ya videos man, even if I’m just watching you draw in general! You art style of how you put it to paper is like descriptive af in a sense , it’s a breath of fresh air
Wow! You did such an amazing job using these. The blending is so amazing. Maybe with a higher "artist quality" pastel, it would not flake as much. Others here in the comments have great tips. I would love to see you do another piece using oil pastels.
There's a lot more you can do with oil pastels. You can blend using other oil pastels (as you did here). Blend using folded tissue paper, blend using blending stumps, blend using oil such as baby oil and a brush (gives more smooth look) you can have an underpainting using acrylics or water colours then layer your pastels on top. There's so much more you can do :)
Those Pastels are amazing! They are way much better than crayons. Only 30€ for this result (I don't forget your excellent drawing skills too). I can't wait to see how you're going to use them in new artwork (layer over brush markers, DBZ character with skin tone, etc.)
I gotta go with pastel side.. I watched this with my son, he is 9 months old and was drawn to the vibrance of the pastels... Also my son just loves watching your content with me :)
When you use oil pastels you can use tissues to blend the oil pastels it stops you from wasting oil pastels age its easier
Hamza K or your hand
Tips are good too
I use my fingers to blend crayons and colored pencils.. I don't use oil pastels that much because I'm afraid to get my drawing dirty
I've blended them using Q-tips.
Don't use your fingers to blend you might accidentally ruin your drawing
I tend to stay away from pastels because of their greasy texture, but I found that using a tissue or sponge can be helpful to create a smooth blend.
lol i was just going to comment that well nvm
That’s why it’s called oil 🤣
I also was going to suggest the tissues plzt try them
Ways to blend oil pastels:
1. Always better to put base layers down first because once that pastel dust touches anything, it is stained for good.

That’s legit the smoothest blend I’ve ever seen with oil pastels. Great job!
I love how one of the rabbits was named Sasuke
Ha yea Just quality 👌🏼
Ikr
If ones named sasuke the other has to be named naruto right????????????????????????
Hope the other one doesn't scream Sasuke all the time like Naruto
Bet the other called Naruto 😏

"Say hello!"
Rabbit: *In batman voice* "Hello people.."
Peapull
Tell me you’ve seen “The Magicians”
Have you considered using a stump or your fingers to blend the colors, it’s probably worth a try. Great artwork and videos btw.
That's what I've done when I've worked with pastels. Also, Q-tips can work if you don't have stumps.
I like using my fingers, but you can also use a tiny bit of baby oil or gamsol to blend them.
Don’t use fingers unless you cover them with a piece of cloth, else you’ll end up depositing oils and impurities from the skin which could cause yellowing

I like the oil pastels a lot. The color looks so rich. Great job on Spidey.
Gimme more of your sweet rabbits. Love them. And your artwork is fantastic as usual.
Would really like to see you do this again after gaining some knowledge on how to use them.
The bunnies are cute. You did great with the oil pastels, spiderman looks totally real 👍🏽🔥🔥

Glorious work. I love the end results and your enthusiasm and energetic reactions
There is not about the supplies, it's about the artist. And You My friend, you're a really good ones
We used oil pastels in elementary school art class. I remember feeling like such a "real artist" coloring with them.
Really enjoy the relaxed style of these recent videos🙂. I would love to see you make a really cool piece of artwork using these pastels in a future video!
There is so much craziness in the world right now. Thanks for something happy and beautiful. Please keep going.

I say yes to the oil pastels! I commend you for going through with it. I would love to see more of your artwork with the oil pastels.

Love the colours of spiderman💗

Blending stumps work really good with pastels too.
Oil pastel confetti. They are so bright. Love it.

I am happy with the oil pastels colouring more than the crayola wax crayons! 😍 Loved it 💯
Nice one there! Love the result of the pastels and the messiness that comes with them! Cheers!
the result here is so much better ! love it

Totally killing it. Awesome video buddy.
Impressive! That color difference from crayon to oil pastel is massive! Awesome as always man. Take care!
I really like your "I tried ... for the first time" videos :) i really enjoy watching you draw / paint. And i also like your asmr videos. I'm watching these every evening before sleep. Thanks for all these videos! :)

so can we just take a moment to appreciate how cute his rabbits are lol.
A nice fluffy soft paint brush is what I use to get the little crumbs swept away without leaving as big of streaks.
I love oil pastels so much. I need to buy some more after seeing this.
You're using oil pastels for the first time! Wow
You’re my inspiration, thanks for videos. Would like to watch a real time inking video. 🙏🏿
Would love to see this, too
Okay, first of all-great video! So, here is an idea I figured out as I want to keep my oilpastell art safe and laminate it. I did thick (!) layer of oilpastell on aquarell paper.
I'm always amazed when you do such an amazing job when using new medium for the first time! Love it!
Hahaha sasuke :D funny intro. What a funny rabbit xD
Hi ADC
Have you tried the Derwent Inktense pencils there amazing when you add water to them,
Worth checking out if you haven't
Great work keep it up
you can use a blending stick (same one you use for charcoal) or a tissue or a cotton swab to do the blending and smooth out the picture texture as a whole. But also helps with color layering with no pilling.
Awesome work ADC! Glad you tried it out! If u want to try and sharpen your pastels, try cutting it with a knife!
BUNNIES! They're so big now. I love oil pastels but they do take a while to get used to.. I usually dont do lining with them but for the first time use you did great! I prefer the oil pastel because it looked more professional. Great work man
These colors are amazing
They look so beautifull
I like the oil pastel art and ur rabbits r cute!
You can use a soft pencil for the fine detail like the webbing. I love oil pastels.
I really like the oil pastels not only do they leave a vibrant rich color also can blend beautifully to add so much depth and features! While the crayons are a bit washed out but I think are really good for less depth detail & simplified drawing technique.
I love the vibrance!
You are the man. Great job! I would love to see you use Watercolors. Thank you
Yeah defo big piece with these please bro. You got the hang by the end, making that blend smooth like water 👍🏻
I always liked to do a mixed medium with oil pastels. Like doing main art with colored pencils for the control and the pastels for the backgrounds. They can make amazing effects.
One of the things you can use with oil pastels is mineral spirits. Gives an interesting finish to blends . Should try it!
I recently just started oil pastels too and I watched a couple of videos and they say using a fluffy watercolor or paint brush to wipe away the access and it really helps and you can scrape to add a little texture but it looks amazing you are so talented 😍I love watching your videos was watching the video while writing this 😂
Excellent job. Really vibrant and punchy. I love it! Try using an oil pastel blending stick for super smooth blends.
Now, one thing about oil pastels. Lay down your colour/s, then use the pad of a finger to rub it in. This is how you truly blend them and ensure the white dots where colour didn't saturate are filled in. Next, you should try out watersoluable oil pastels, they are amazing.

Dude I love when you try new materials on this channel its like a new adventure everytime I click on your videos.
Omg watched this intro so many times for the bun buns! Love the video :) greetings from holland :)
haha i just bought some oil crayons and googled oil crayons and your video popped up. it's my first time with oil crayons too, after recently purchasing childrens crayons to paint a little...just like you i instinctively did the swatch tests, blend test AND then *tried to blend with the finger*! the blend you got in the neck is just...ahhh so lovely! new subbie! 🙂 thanks for a great video 🙂 i definitely prefer the oil side more!
I would buy that just like that. That is art to me in the purest form
Keep uploading new videos. You channel is my no.1 favorite channel ❤️❤️❤️
You can smudge blend too ...like with graphite or charcoal.... Use your finger to move the medium around
i am not a artist and i have never use oil pastels but i have seen many ppl using napkins folded to smooth and blend and looks amazing smooth . you did amazing job as well i am really glad that youtube put your video as recommend >>^.^>^.^
Haha thank you very much, I'll take the advice on board next time :)
VERY GOOD !!! YOU ARE VERY TALENTED!!!💯💯💯
I love the vibrancy of the pastels, but crayolas have a special place in my heart....and are way more travel friendly. ❤️
The bunnies are sooo cute, I have one too and he is so adorable, the best per you can get 🥺
Your so talented and I love your rabbits
I love your videos i learn a lot from you continue posting bangers
Those Pastels are amazing! They are way much better than crayons. Only 30€ for this result (I don't forget your excellent drawing skills too).
I can't wait to see how you're going to use them in new artwork (layer over brush markers, DBZ character with skin tone, etc.)
I like his manly squeal as that vicious bunny jumped on the box! Reminds me of Monty Python. RUN AWAY!
I literally jumped Haha you can see the moment my body shook
I gotta go with pastel side.. I watched this with my son, he is 9 months old and was drawn to the vibrance of the pastels... Also my son just loves watching your content with me :)
