  • Playthrough Rules:
    1. Only my starter in battle
    2. No items in battle*
    3. No glitches or exploits*
    4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
    Other rules:
-- *Pokeballs are allowed in battle when I need to catch an HM user
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- I allow myself to manipulate my starter (IVs, nature, HP type)
-- Using the bike for movement speed increases is banned (it can be used to obtain items)
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- HM Mules cannot use Pickup (I want to ensure that the comparison between Pokemon is as accurate as possible, this RNG would skew things.)
    *Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
    -- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining

21:50 A tip for the Wobbuffet battles: Dark types like Shiftry are immune to Mirror Coat (and Ghosts are immune to Counter). And since Wobbuffet is very slow, it almost always uses Destiny Bond second, meaning you can just not attack the next turn to completely avoid it. So Giga Drain gave you a guaranteed win against every Wobbuffet, as long as you didn't attack the turn after they used Destiny Bond... Which you did, and that's why you died.

I honestly and unjoking-ly love the big ol Tengu. Never really saw him as a "crotch for a chin" guy, cause - first of all - he looks like a wooden doll and as most action figures and dolls just doesn´t have a crotch really and second because I always thought it´s not really having a mouth as having a movable part like at one of those creepy dolls. Again - with the doll theme. I know. And despite all of it I love it. It is weird, its based on a cool japanese yokai and much too much doll things going on that it should be.
Looking forward to it. You kicking it out of the ball park for a while now Scott and I want to say thank you. I am happy to be here along the way talking about wooden dolls in pokemon for whatever reason.

Also as a fellow music nerd i also think Wally's remake theme is pretty good, but my one complaint about it is that it's such a short loop. You don't notice it so much when battling him but just go to the battle tower in oras and change the music outside to his theme, i get sick of it after the third or fourth loop (so about two minutes). Now, the Hoenn E4 theme on the other hand, that is absolute perfection, god *damn* i love that battle theme. Used to walk around as a kid with my headphones on and my gameboy in my pocket in an E4 battle just listening to that dope ass theme

Heads up for future Dark and Psychic runs in Hoenn, aim for Tate’s Pokémon first (Claudia and Solrock). Liza’s Pokémon only have Psychic as an attacking move. So if you take out Tate, who is the only one with coverage, Liza can only annoy you with status (namely sleep and boosting Special). It really takes all the bite out of the battle.

I do think the cool thing about Shiftry in comparison to the Pokemon around it like Ludicolo or Swampert is that it always felt like it had good options available to it. Maybe an earlier Growth could have spared it some levels against Steven? I'm not entirely sure. Steven seems...a lot scarier in Emerald than Red in Crystal, especially Skarmory. Feels like every Pokemon that goes against it has to play the puzzle of "How do I beat the Skarmory".

HP Fire would of been best for you here I think. Also as its Halloween, do you have plans for a Shedinja only vid. its a ghost for Halloween and we all know how much you like your bug types.

I think part of why you struggled later was because you weren’t sure what strategies were the best to commit too. Like do you go more Physical based to try to brute force fights or do a Special setup with Growth. I personally think Growth setup is pretty good in the League since the first Mon tends to use a setup move.
If you’re going for HP Fire in the future, Rollout could be good for Flannery and Winona. Rollout can be used on Slugma so you one shot the Torkoal, and it can be also used on Tropius so you can one shot Altaria. In terms of dealing with Drake, I think Growth + Thief with Black Glasses could be a way to deal with the Dragons that can’t be hit with Giga Drain.
As a Shiftry fan, I can’t wait to see how you optimize it in the future! Maybe a Ludicolo vs Shiftry race?

    -Good nature choice
-Good HP choice, even if it ended up being a mistake in the end that's really hindsight, HP ice isn't a clear mistake logically thinking
    -Picked up all useful TMs
-Good battling strats, except for Wobbufett and Winona's Skarmory but those were over quickly
    -Started using persims
Definitely your cleanest Emerald run, not even by a small margin, it's leaps and bounds better. It's a pleasure to see all the improvements

      First few gyms VERY GOOD
Flannery I'd run substitute for same with Norman
I'm questioning the hidden power choice maybe hp fire was the answer specifically for Steven this is very debatable because drake would have been the wall without hp ice n question is would you take a bad drake or an awful Steven
Tate n Liza definitely would have been a sweep with shadow Ball
Fun fact you can save n reset for shadow tag from catching or Thieving wild duskull or shuppet which would have helped vs tate n liza n allowed you to hit dusclops n sabeleye ranges
Sidney I had a gripe with not using white herb you would have swept the fight instead of an unnecessary close fight
Phoebe I'd run spell tag or sitrus berry
Glacia I ran the calcs n yeh you didn't have a good play there
The champion Wallace fight WAS REALLY POORLY PLANNED
You taught REST and no chesto berry to compliment, that was really bad n COST YOU AT LEAST 10 MINUTES minimum
Same went for Steven more time lost because of no resto chesto
It is 100 percent THE IDEAL PLAY to go chesto berry on your rest pokemon unless
      A. You get one shot anyway
      B. A range YOU must hit ABSOLUTELY needs to happen or you lose
This does happen a bit which is WHY we research type boosting items n berries
      C. Confusion status or attract
      D. If your opponent swords dance, dragon dance or calm mind n that essentially leads to situation A

I love both Ludicolo and Shiftry (their design is awesome), but I think they lack 30 points in their base stats to really shine. Especially Shiftry that has a lot of weaknesses.

It's a tengu.. tengu, in Japanese folklore, a type of mischievous supernatural being, sometimes considered the reincarnated spirit of one who was proud and arrogant in life. Tengu are renowned swordsmen and are said to have taught the military arts to the Minamoto hero Yoshitsune.

i resorted to using this thing for my Dark Type in Sword, i was surprised how good it was, the grass typing certainly had a factor into its usefulness but yeah the weaknesses really hurt it if you are not too careful.

For Sydney, you can get a white herb to negate the Intimidate drop outside the berry shop on route 10 after you beat watson in gen 3. It's best at sydney maybe drake or Wallace for physical attackers, because against Maxie and Archie, their mightyena can always swagger you and give you +1 with the persim berry.

I feel like solo itemless challenges are exactly what this game was made for. That AI is absolutely brutal and they have really good 'mons too, but you'd never experience that if you were playing the game with a team. At every turn that AI wrecked you and exploited so many aspects like item use to get an advantage. Emerald is such a great game for that.

    I love generation 3!
I haven’t played much past diamond/ pearl, those two were SO. SLOW. PACED. So honestly I don’t even play those much but I do enjoy it.
RBY are obviously high on the list, I was playing those before I even could comprehend what I was doing and constantly saving over my brothers game and him getting pissed…oops!
Silver/ Gold are great too, although I have the least amount of time with those, I actually still have to look up some stuff with those two.
I also played White and honestly I hated it so much I never went past it bahaha.
But emerald is the one where I was actually old enough to understand most of the concepts, I think I was in middle school when it released so I spent soooo many hours playing it, and it’s the one I always seem to go back to. So basically what I’m trying to say is THANK YOU for playing Gen 3!
I do have a question, I don’t think I’ve seen you play Fire Red/ Leaf Green? Did I just miss it or any reason you dont?

Given Shiftry's STABs and best Hidden Power options, I'd have gone with high special attack and not regular attack, despite it having a slightly higher attack stat. Wanna boost what you're gonna use the most in the end game

Once when I was a kid, after fighting Koga, I was switching a few pokemon around from my PC box because I didn't really have anything that could surf on my team (because I was a kid and really only used Venasaur and Graveler) and I managed to black out and lose half my money because I put away my only pokemon with HP left and withdrew a fainted poliwag.

I was waiting for you to try Shiftry because it is honestly pretty good, especially in later Gens with Leaf Blade and Night slash, also Shiftry is much better than many Hoenn Dark types that have the "Rampardos" problem, i.e. High attack, low and everything else, but Shiftry has high attack and high speed. Also, if you're gonna try this again, maybe Break Break is good for Steven?

Speaking of the Root Fossil, I'd love to see a Lileep run. I expect it would lose a race vs Anorith, but maybe the latter would get stuck on someone that Lileep could just stall out?
I see two potential answers to Flannery's Torkoal: allowing Amnesia as an egg move, or learning Rollout via move tutor. Apparently that particular tutor is in Mauville City, but I haven't played Emerald anywhere near as much as Ruby. Maybe the NPC is inaccessible before Flannery, e.g. you need Surf or something.

I didn't really like shiftry as a kid, it always looked so odd to me. And besides I really hated to face Sydney's shiftry because of double team.😅
But you've kind of gave it a great run. As stone evolution it's movepool can be very limited, but you've managed to make it, even though it kind struggled at the end game for sure.
I think that having chlorophyll is better then early bird for the hoenn playthroughs, because they rarely use a sleeping moves in hoenn, so having that with paired with sunny day could work against Wallace and Steven.
If you're using rest you could combine it with substitute, if you want to avoid being hit by status move at the turn you wake up. By the way, you can make a use of skarmory's toxic to use facade(it would do natural damage because of Steven having steel types) , and then heal whenever the toxic damage is too strong. It would only work with attract though to make sure that the skarmory won't attack you.
By the way, to avoid cruse from phoebe's ghosts you can use protect or torment to make sure they won't use that on the next turn.😊
Shiftry would have wished to have its egg move of amnesia and leech seed, for this run. The physical/special split of pre gen 4 is really is really bad for shiftry overall, add to that a team full of steel types. Yeah, the hoenn games are not kind to grass type at all. 😅
But, hey, I love watching you try new strats, to make the runs a bit better in emerald, a little by little, and you're doing a great job at it, so keep it up! 😊👏👏👏
