- Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle (except held items)

4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- My Pokemon have perfect genetics to ensure fair comparison between species.
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle

-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game & timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther
-- Minimize is the other evasion raising move, these Pokemon learn it through level up:

Gengar was a beast and definitely got redemption in this video. Also I love the use of the old watercolor art for red and blue. Makes me feel old but nostalgic.
6:14 time for a fun fact, some of you probably know already but for the uninitiated
In gen 1 all level ups are done at the same time, we see Gengar skipping from level 9 to 11 here
Sounds pretty plain so far, but if any moves get learned on any of the levels that get skipped they're not presented to you, this is hardly ever an issue but switch training against higher levels opponents or similar with exp share (which is broken in gen 1) can actually screw you over
I will be shocked beyond belief if Yellow Gengar is faster than Red Gengar.
I'm too lazy to look it up as I'm out of the house rn, are the learnsets different between the games for Gengar? Or just general R/B differences that aid a lot of Pokémon?
Learnsets are the same. RB is just a very different game.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon More like subtly different game. They're mostly the same and therefore easy to compare, but there's some key differences who alter the experience. That's why the community calls "third versions" and recognizes them as different but similar.
Wish you both the best of luck, gengar is my favorite Pokémon!
gengar is purple…
While I've been critical of the hypnosis reliance in the past, I think you did a very good job with more balanced usage of it in this video. There were a few times, as you commented, that it'd probably have been better to go for the KO but overall you tended to use it on pokemon that a single move could shut you down (better 60% chance for sleep than 20% chance to crit), when you were so low health that it was your only out available, or situations where you were risking being hypnosis spammed yourself (better rely on your 60% chance to hit than their 40% chance to miss). I feel these are all very fair uses of Hypnosis overall, as you're already being forced into a position where you are fishing for a lucky result and Hypnosis is one of the most consistent luck based options you've got. While some moveset variations or extra training might have given you some better solutions to some of these walls, overall it really felt like you considered all your various options and determined that Hypnosis was just your best bet at the time, and that's honestly a very nice thing to see, and it makes it pretty fun for me at least to watch when I see you look at your health, know that you'll die in one hit, and roll the dice in hopes of pulling out a win that's otherwise out of reach.
Thanks! Glad you noticed. Unfortunately Gengar still needs it quite a bit. But I’m happy with how little I used it.
Don't know if this has been pointed out already, but in red, it would be faster to trade the Spearow for a farfetch'd in vermilion. That way you don't have to look for and catch an Oddish for cut
I think thats only in FR/LG
@@patonosequecosa no, same applies to red/blue, just not yellow
Can we just appreciate the effort that went into the editing on this video, more than most much larger channels, love it
If you're up for more Yellow playthroughs with Gengar you can always incorporate a time traveling Gengar from gen 2 that begins with the elemental punches and Night Shade and modify the moveset with things like Body Slam, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Mega Drain, Mimic, and Rest as the TMs become available. I imagine Ice Punch especially would be quite valuable for the run.
Ice punch would solve the Sandslash problem.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Erika's Mega Drain could help with Sandslash too - I think you don't NEED Psychic for the champion
@@LVazR Psychic hits harder, though.
@@LVazR 40 base power doubled to 80 is less than the 90 base power of psychic. Don't fall for the super effective swindle.
@@DrDrao What about Ice Punch over Psychic though? It's gen 1 so it'd be good against more than just the Sandslash. Also Lance would be more trivial than he already is having Thunderbolt for the Gyarados and Ice Punch for the rest of his team. The Brock, Misty, and Surge splits would see significant benefits from Ice Punch and Thunder Punch. He might even be able to take Erika immediately after arriving in Celadon.
Man you are dropping so many videos so quickly, big respect to the grind, great content too. I listen to these while falling asleep a lot because I can picture everything that's happening from the commentary alone.
I love the retro art for Pokémon Red Gengar, it’s a nice touch.
Gengar putting up one of the most dominating performances of Red AND Yellow yet is great. This probably won't be the only sub-40 time (I can take a guess at one more Pokemon who could do it) but I imagine that Hall of Fame is going to be very exclusive.
On the other hand, wow is Gengar really pushing that consistency versus speed problem for Yellow though. It really needs Hypnosis to land at several points to do well. I know its unpopular, but with Pokemon like Gengar, you do have to weigh the consistency versus the speed. The levels you would need to OHKO Pokemon like Sandslash or Magneton with Psychic are going to cost more time than even resetting several times, and in that case, it does make sense to go for the less consistent but much faster strategy. Totally justified use of Hypnosis.
Sleep's broken enough in Gen 1 to justify use despite the accuracy and 60% accuracy is probably worth the risk. Just.
I am loving these red/blue vs yellow runs! I always assumed my strong opinions on the different versions was due to nostalgia and I didn't realize how many differences there were.
Yeah, I didn't either. Playing these challenges makes me appreciate just how different the games are.
When you think the video is gonna end at two runs per game but Scott has a third run ready for Yellow just for the sake of getting that final minute shaved off of Gengar's time there.
Yup. I couldn’t leave it where it was. The Gengar fans deserve more!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon you’re putting in masterful work, man. Keep it up, I look forward to your videos.
Spoilers:
Sub 40 is excellent, congratulations! As a Gengar fan, yes I am happy with these results, and thank you for going to all the extra effort
Man, this is exactly why I love your videos, such improvement and heart, you go man!
Your vids are seriously ASMR for my dog. She always naps next to me while I listen to them.
Point of interest: EXP finally overlapping in the mid to late sixties doesn't even mean the medium-fast curve is finally caught up for time. After all, the medium-slow curve has been spending more time at higher levels past two- or one-shot thresholds and picking xp up faster for it.
Really loving the content coming out lately. I don't have internet all the time where I'm at and I always look forward to your videos man!
I appreciate you man.
I'm so happy that Seismic Toss allowed you to do better.
Scott cranking videos out like a machine this week, love to see it.
Gengar is such a beast and in Pokemon Red he just wipes the floor! It's insane that I could completed it in less time than my morning commute if I had the right setup haha! Unreal to get the times that you did, safe to say the optimization has gone has far is it can do haha.
Also I love Gengars back sprite in red. It looks like how I look when I notice free food sitting on the table lol.
Another great vid Scott! Had to watch this one over mutliple days but there's something relaxing about having consistent content of yours to watch over multiple days.
It helps that in Red and Blue that the main opponents have crappier movesets. Namely the Elite Four plus taking into account AI modifications to some trainers.
If you’re up to do more R/B vs Y videos, I’d love to see Scyther in action! Since it gets Wing Attack in Yellow and thus a fairly reliable way to hit Agatha’s ghosts, I could see it being one of the few Pokémon to be superior in Y as opposed to RB, plus the RB tier list needs some bad Pokémon to round it out 😂 (also this Gengar video was a very interesting watch; didn’t expect the results to be as close as they were)
Neat idea!
Can we talk about how a ghost type can use bodyslam? A normal move that does not affect him? Gen 1 logic is a beautiful thing.
Me: Oh man, is he actually going to get knocked out by Leech Seed from HP?
Executor: Nope.
"After all, I did not have a difficult trainer like Koga to overcome." Never thought I would ever hear a sentence like this.
The name Ghost reminds me of that obscure Creepypasta where a hacked game allowed the narrator to use the actual Ghost from Lavender Town x3
Good video as always!
Do I expect red to be faster? Yes. Do I expect yellow to still look like a more impressive run? Also yes.
I saved this for Halloween day! Can’t wait to watch
i like the idea behind this...youve got all the Solo-Red/Blue pokemon, the Solo-Yellow pokemon, the VS series (same game, different pokemon) AND the "VS-Yellow" series (same pokemon, different game)...all kinds of variables and measurements and data and metrics and experiments and information...
...and, of course, Content and Watch Time ;)
Im so pumped for this run!!!!
Those battles with the mighty secret gen 1 fairy type Venomoth had make shaking in terror 😨
why? gengar is a poison type, silly! he'd resist the venomoth's stab moves!
Lets goooo.... Gengar in red should have it easier, specially with Koga, Sabrina and specially Giovanni.. ^^
Good luck Scott! Happy that you give Gengar more place again :)
This is a really interesting idea for a vs video, im looking forward to seeing more like this
Machamp is next in this series
I love your overlay!
Wow, Scott you're absolutely amazing! Doing 10 runs with the same pokemon, and completing that, is a tough job, and I super appreciate it 😊. Keep up the good work!👏👏👏
Sesmic toss was kind of nice idea to use for coverage. Speed is really brilliant with these cool ideas. 😊
Doing a run with a max dvs gengar is making that small(yet big) deference(and without vitamins) , between it and mediocre one, in my run I lost to koga the sliph rival and giovanni, because I wasn't outspeeding thier pokemon or i couldn't take a hit. 😅😂
So thanks for teaching me all of these cool strats to make my future runs even better, from now on. 😊
Man. What a redemption arc for Gengar in Yellow, despite the increased difficulty. Ditching the old strategy and new adjustments in the rules and new strategies made an enormous difference in time.
Gengar is luckily one of the few Poison types who is not terrible fully evolved, unlike some like Muk, Vileplume, Arbok, and Weezing. Even against the threat of Psychics in Kanto. Still though, Hypnomiss is a pain, even in Gen 1 competitive as a Sleep Lead for Gengar.
Definitely the best poison type
And to think, all it had to do was have a good moveset, immunity to Normal and Fighting moves, and be reasonably tanky specially which means it hits hard specially. Gengar may as well not be a Poison type at all.
*at erika* "I solemnly swear not to over use hypnosis."
*rest of run* Proceeds to make it the primary crutch of his yellow run.
Love your content, had to call that out.
“Over use” I used it when required.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I think we'll have to disagree, but I think we just play differently. Kinda like the three non-attacking moves agaisnt the champion with Arcanine 1st run. It works for you(sometimes) but it definitely feels suboptimal.
missed that video out, damn now i start missing videos too not just streams xD well at least i check your channel weekly
gengar is my favorite pokemon man, looking forward to watching this one!!!
This is awesome and love the effort you put into this and the fact that you got sub 40 in Yellow, regardless of how many times it took 😁😁
Yeah, a year ago I would have said sub 40 was impossible. Glad I was able to do it.
Idea Scott! If you ever need a break from the normal challenge run, you should do one where you race to catch every Pokémon available in the game. It obviously wouldn’t be all 151, but it’d be fun to show what each version-like red, blue, yellow-had as far as version exclusives and all
I love the ultra Instinct Gengar illustration. (It's funny that in the Pokémon world carbs make you faster)
Still catching up on all these videos. Loving all the content !
very nicely done sir, I got to say that looked so close, even with all of your practice at this point on Yellow with Gengar (and a ton of others for that matter) Yellow is a bastard of a game if you're trying to be quick. I think without those paralysis' you might of beaten Reds time, but your luck would of bad to be perfect to do that and wheres the fun in perfect. you've been a real trooper this halloween and I think you for it. you make great viewing for while I attempt my Gen 3 play throughs, I'll tell you this now, if you try Beautifly vs Dustox for Emerald, Beautifly will win and if you ever try a Masquerain it will be better than both especially if you start out with a Surskit and evolve it at level 25 instead of 22
So glad I found your channel. I absolutely love these videos. It’s nice seeing the differences between the 3 games. You should try a Mr. Mime/Jynx run.
I guess the self-destructing hiker wanted to celebrate Halloween with a fireworks show
Another great vid! Thank you, sir :)
You’re welcome!
Man Scott you the man, just coming out and saying you messed up in the past that's some real man shit. Respect mad Respect, and once you get back to a normal schedule I think it would be cool to see lickitung. It has a good move set but it's stat are wack
Lickitung will be fun!
Hello Scott and Denis!
I've always loved Gengar! Yellow was the game I had as a kid, so I hope it's not too much worse than in Red.
Good god, that red gengar sprite! It looks like its in some sort of hellish purgatory!
I've been playing these games since 1997 and at 17:05 was where i realized for the first time that DROWZEE USED TO HAVE HUMAN HANDS.
Oh gen 1, never change
Hype! Happy spooooky season
"Looks at Lance's Red Team" Yeah no wonder Diantha beat him up. Probably just needed only her Gourgeist.
Once again a beautiful display of Pokemon and science colliding. Top notch you've come such a long way from your older videos.
I do wonder though, why did you choose to fight Flareon in every run, would Jolteon team give you some precious seconds not having to deal with Magneton, I understand that the real problem is Eggexcutor but would Ninetails and Jolteon be a potentially better opponent.
Or is all this null and void because of the extra time it would take to fight rival 2a
Rival 1a has Spearow that has peck. Takes time to fight him plus he is dangerous for Gengar. Far better to just skip and figure out how to deal with the Flareon team.
It was such a great video!!!!
Hey Scott! Quick q: what do you think of chaptering your videos on RUclips? Do you think that detracts from the experience as you can sorta get a grip on how the run is gonna be before you even watch it or do you think it can be implemented for the next vids? Thanks!
At the end of the day: it doesn’t matter which version of a Pokémon is better, Yellow will always be seen as being significantly harder than Red and Blue.
It's the fact the boss battles have mostly better teams as well as AI modification for some trainers. In a normal playthrough, it isn't like they don't give you good paths to victory. It should also teach you the importance of teambuilding since it's possible to clear the Elite Four underlevelled as long as you have a strong and balanced team.
I laughed out loud when I saw the Bruno tier lmao
At this point I’m just going back watching all your older videos…
If you haven’t considered it yet, would love to see a Chansey gen1 run
I did Chansey in December!
Scott, may I suggest that for challenges like this - where a Pokemon runs against itself in different versions - you change the layout to a color matching the version?
I know you tried to tell them apart with the sprite displayed on the left, but I think color makes it more apparent.
For challenges just in yellow, I would like you to keep the type based frame
His mum must be so shocked seeing her son return after 2 hours having become the new champion
I screamed when you tried to use lick against starmie.
Excellent video.
What is this? Scott releasing like 3 videos in a week? Holy crap what a treat
5 actually. Omanyte, Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Gengar, Misdreavus
I half expected Toxic and Mimicked Leech Seed to come out with that Exeggutor! (Or does Yellow fix that bug?) Very nice runs, both sides.
58:45 lol Surge is the new Erika huh. And here I thought Jrose demoting him to "Assistant Gift Store Manager" was funny.
Hey Scott have you thought about showing the trainer Pokemon's stat changes in the overlay? Like when Lorelei's Slowbro uses Amnesia or you score a special drop with Psychic. Not sure if it's a ton of work or even possible, just curious
Possible. There is an issue that needs to be solved though that I currently don’t know how to fix. It will take time.
An unsurprising result. Really cool to see the game results side by side. Is the plan to do additional ones in this format, or separate videos with a comparison at the end of whichever gets played/released second? Or no plans at all?
If I’ve already done the Pokémon in yellow and I want to re-do it, I’ll probably do this format. If I just want to replay Yellow, I’ll stream it.
Hey you’ve done all three starters, both as evolved final forms, and as baby’s, you should do a regular raichu and surfing raichu next. Like the surfing pikachu video
Today I learned the real threat of blue’s exeggcutor isn’t leech seed. It’s Leech life. Happy spoopy season :)
Now that you play red and yellow witch one do you think is best to do a solo challanges and/or mono type run?
If you want difficulty: yellow
If you want ease or speed: red/blue
I wonder when that Q&A video promised two months ago is gonna come out?
Getting psychic early so the gastlies are a one shot and don't paralyse you could be a mistake since gengar cannot be paralysed by lick. (secondary effect of a Same type damaging move)
True. Confuse ray can still be awful though. I don’t think Psychic first is a mistake, even just because of the time save one hitting every poison type from there on out.
Random spooky fact: I always name my Shedinja "Ghost in the Shell"
Did you ever consider doing a segmented run? Like, just do a split over and over until you're satisfied, and only count the best times? It would, especially in comparisons, eliminate luck to a great degree, as you'd be only counting the times you personally like. Maybe give it a try, if the idea tickles your interest.
Yeah, I do that if I’m practicing a particular segment of the run. I’d love to do it more but production takes so long as is that it isn’t really realistic to do it.
Have you done Parasect Scott? It fits the Halloween theme because it's practically a zombie.
I wanted to release that video. But it wasn’t in the cards.
Scott how would you feel about using the setting in the universal randomizer to set 100% catch rates. For catching a flyer like doduo. May save time
I don’t like modifying the game other than my starter and the trash can puzzle. There’s so many small things that could be modified but that’s my limit
I'm relatively new to this channel, so I probably missed a video that explains this, but what is up with always mis-typing Venomoth? Is it just because, like me, you can never remember what the types are?
Venomoth video has the answers!
Prediction for Yellow Time: 1:10:25 (Not even close to correct here: 48:40, wow!)
Prediction for Red/Blue Time: 1:02:12 (Not even close here either: 42:07, again wow!)
All I can say is I'm disappointed in Butt for not being a better brick wall.
Scott is a boss!
For the algorithm
Now I'm no Pokemon champion, but that Misty fight hurt my soul.
Me too
Great video
Hey. Hypnosis saved me in my Hoothoot only in Fire Red run. It did so by being Hoothoot's only "good" move, but still.
So eventually you did get that Mega Punch crit :).
imagine knocking someone out of the way of the eevee then prof oak gives the person a gengar
Seismic Toss may be useful just to restore PP if it's exactly the same as Night Shade in the early game.
I wonder if investing some time to fight Rival 1A would be worth it to avoid having to play around Magneton paralysis as much, even though you also give up the free win against Flareon. Probably wouldn't help much if at all though.
Could make it more consistent, but I think the time ceiling would be lower. The Flareon team technically can yield the fastest playthrough time.
Couldn't you get the Eevee and water stone in celadon to surf instead of waiting for Lapras?
"Which triggers the glitch, cutting Gengars speed to one…"😂😂😂
Hahahahah. God, I love this game
Me too! This glitch is so funny
I think I heard that “so wrong” Exeggcute pronunciation more times in this video than in any other. I’d probably have liver poisoning if I turned this into a drinking game.
Who else taught their charizard seismic toss without knowing what it did because ash's zard used that move?
That's gotta be a long ass rope. I did always wonder how the rope got you out of a tunnel lol
Do you have a link for that "Rapping Lass" picture? It's really cute.
I don’t, Sarina drew it so it’s only available through the videos.
Might actually make it in time today lol :)
I'm gonna guess Red Gengar will be faster, seems to be the trend ;) No idea how fast though... sub-hour time.
11:45 The dryness of your delivery cracked me up.
1:30:48 You get burned by Arcanine's ember, thus halving your attack stat. Does this not trigger the badge boost glitch?
Burn / paralysis doesn’t trigger the badge boost glitch. It modifies only the intended stat and does not cause badge boost recalculation.
Finally a chance at redemption
So the answer is spam hypnosis! BTW real talk Scott, know what happened to Jrose? Haven't seen a Halloween special there. Keep up the great work, love how you guys support each other in building a great solo run community!
He posted on twitter that he isn’t feeling very good right now. I think he’s streaming though, check him out there to give him support!
Noctowls for the blood god. Dennis for the Skull throne.
So sacrilegious, you should praise lord Helix
Are you going to do a run without poke centers?
For future thumbnails you should youse the Red/Blue Ken Sugimori artwork vs the anime key art for Yellow instead of the Fire Red/Leaf Green art.
Would you ever make comparison videos like these with remakes?
Maybe
