Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration
These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll

Errors & Corrections:
1) Mawile is also a mono-steel type (the Bulbapedia list led me astray since the fairy-type was added in generation 6)
2) Regirock had blackouts in it's first playthrough because it had to lose against Wallace
Could hypothetically deplete Explosion and Self-Destruct PP against a Pokemon with the Damp ability to use Struggle, as a note. (Psyduck/Golduck/Wooper/Quagsire/Poliwag/Poliwhirl/Poliwrath/Politoed)

@@BloodfelX it wouldn't work. None of these Pokémon appear in the early game (especially since his issues come before the first may battle), not to mention that the only line available in emerald is psyduck, only appearing in the wild in the safari zone.
@@sup3rkidd333 Indeed, leaves it only a hypothetical solution - and I think the Regis have more moves in Heart Gold and Soul Silver so I don't think it would even be needed there, though Woopers probably appear too late in Johto as well anyhow.
@@BloodfelX HGSS and platinum are actually possible for all 3, without the need for a damp Pokémon, as all of them have stomp as a starting move. Though if they didn't have that it wouldn't be possible as the earliest encounters with a damp Pokémon would be wooper in HGSS after violet city (which has 2 required battles to make it there) and psyduck in platinum in the ravaged path (which has a few required battles to make it there on route 202). This does however mean that diamond and pearl are impossible as they only have explosion in those games to begin with.
I wonder if you tried Sunny Day with Regirock to make Wallace easier.

apparently Wurmple's evolution isn't random, and that WOULD be an interesting technical deep-dive given the nature of these runs
Unfortunately, those Types are really stripped for STAB, this Gen still, so I don't think this is gonna go the way Scott hopes it will... still, those will surely be interesting (perhaps in a VS video?).
@@andreapareti324 Well, at least Volbeat is one of the few pokemon able to use signal beam. I thought for a second Illumise was as well, but after looking at its moveset... ouch.
@@KiranasOfRizon Volbeat indeed technically has the second best Bug STAB in the games up until that point... but it's Volbeat; before the Physical-Special split that made Tail Glow actually synergize with Signal Beam.
And yeah, Illumise is just STAB-less, alongside also being really bad.
They'll have some STAB in the form of Signal Beam or Bug Hidden Power (ouch), but my point was that they're so bad they will probably still have trouble, possibly even against the dreaded Ludicolo nemesis 😅.

The regis cant beat the game on their own, but what if you use all three of them at the same time? They can theoretically switch train each other to victory, but i wonder how a three pokemon run would go in this format.
Could do a gen 4 run and pit legendary trios against each other and rank that. Birds vs beasts vs golems vs sprites

I've been wanting to do an all-Regi run in Gen 3 and I would have just given them a second move (like Stomp). It could be neat to leave them with their base moves and have to switch train them until they learn a new move.
A 3-Pokemon run would be interesting too because you're splitting the EXP 3 ways so you won't be overlevelled as quickly and TMs are not reusable, so you'll have to be careful how you distribute them.
I feel like this started out as an April Fools video about how all 3 of them are at the bottom of the Tierlist.. And then Scott tried to figure out in which order they should be in, and then genuinely tried to figure that out in the most scientific way possible - which ended up in a solo challenge for all the mons with the least intrusive change possible

I second this. I’d love to have more single player Starcraft 1/BW playthroughs out there.
I mentioned it in my mention but I'll put it as a reply here too;
I'd recommend checking out GiantGrantGames. He puts out edited challenge runs not all that dissimilar to Scott's Pokemon runs, and has a secondary channel where he puts out full live playthroughs - again similiar to Scott's methods.
Let's get some tower defense or mass attack vids sprinkled in to change things up.

From the bottom of my heart, Scott, THANK YOU! Emerald vids are my fave and I especially love the Regis for their unsettlingly abstract designs. This was an amazingly fun and long video to watch

I think Regice above Registeel was a fair result since it was still a bit faster even with worse luck. The Regirock redemption arc really impressed me!
I watched this video over the course of a couple days and to say this had me on the edge of my seat was and is an understatement. Scott, I love your videos, and you always do such a great job, explaining and playing these games. And I think this versus video is probably my favorite between all the jokes, the comparison, and just how tight the race was. It was incredible and I am looking so forward to seeing every new video you come to post. :)

1:12:28 Steven swapping into Metagross to die to Earthquake was... uh... brilliant. Poor guy tried a switch strategy and got destroyed because of it lol. Great runs. Shame Regirock wasn't able to do as good later, but that's the fate of a Rock-type in Hoenn sadly.
These runs were quite the roller coaster with all their twists and turns, and I enjoyed it a lot

The dedication you have to these videos is very impressive. The fact that you looked at three Pokemon who could not solo a game and said "but how can I rank them within the impossible tier" is amazing. I probably would have considered a universe in which the Regis start with their respective weak STAB moves, or even have them start with Stomp like they do in later generations, but the solution you used was way funnier. I noticed you using early Rare Candies, which I think is really good and will drastically improve your Emerald play by considering which Pokemon need them and when. One thing I'd consider doing differently with the solos is I'd have made Marshtomp the rival for Regirock instead of Grovyle just because it resists Rock moves. It especially would've made the second fight harder and maybe would have required training for Secret Power. Very very good video! I'm excited for more Emerald VS videos!

I was really surprised about the starcraft intro. Normally I never knew anyone to really talk about that game unless they were in the community. Thanks for reminding me of that game, I spent years of my childhood playing it and it really brought me back

Honestly what initially got me into this channel years ago was my love for Pokemon/challenge runs.. but also that I never played gen 1 more than a little, and really didn't have much deep knowledge in it. Your super through/rigorous breakdowns with these solo runs was the perfect infodump wonder for me
I've loved watching you go into games I know better, and refine your layout and gameplay with time. But losing that magic as you've moved to more familiar gens left me less engaged recently, in all honesty.
I've barely ever played StarCraft, and know absolutely nothing. That taste in the intro really recaptured that magic again for me! I'm so excited for this new channel, honestly.

This came on auto play after another video and I was VERY confused at first.
I legitimately would be interested in some StarCraft videos though. Even though I have never played them more than a few minutes but listening to you talk about the infested Terran actually had me wondering about it. Goes to show that literally anything can be interesting if presented well!

When I was a kid there was a strategy game I used to watch my dad play on the computer and got to play a grand total of once. All these years later I've often wondered what it was. Watching this video I really think it might have been Starcraft. Thank you so much for that tangent.

I'd watch an Infested Terran only StarCraft run. But I also watch StarCraft challenge videos anyway. If I wasn't paying attention I would have thought this was a video from another tab I have open. Interesting solution to the Regi problem. They were never intended to be level 5. I likely would have started the run with them being level 10. But that also unbalances the rest of the tier list. Explosion if obviously useless in solo runs, it would be interesting to see how it can help in runs where you have a team.

Usually I wait to comment but oh my watching that StarCraft opening has just brought me back to being 8 years old. I was the exact same as you Scott and wasn't allowed the internet so played StarCraft campaign exclusively! However I preferred the Terrans cause I always thought I'd be like the marines I instantly went and subscribed to your other channel and I am very excited. Of course I don't remember StarCraft looking such high quality compared to my cube monitor back in the day haha
They released a fantastic remaster of the game a few years back. It feels very faithful in style but dramatically improves the visuals.

Yeah, when you've got only 50 base special attack and are primarily a physical attacker, it's always best to go adamant. The nature drop to such a low stat is barely even going to affect the moves used when you do use the rare special attack for a physical attacker or vice versa. Even Regice would probably perform better overall as Modest if it can still manage to pull off Whitney at the same level. It might be worth doing various playthrough comparisons to test this, but yeah, glad to see you're learning more about natures

I love the regis!!!! They are my favorite legendary trio ever made. I'd love to see an actual regi of every type! I know there are YT videos of fan made ones but I'd love a game with a regi of every type

I would love to see explosion be an option in play throughs. I think changing it to where it is a priority move that leaves you on 1 HP so if you don't knock out you run the risk of getting ko'd next turn!

Keep in mind I'm just at the early portion of the video, so I don't know what's gonna happen, eventual realizations and optimizations, but this isn't the first time you make... out there choices for natures, right after you express sound reasoning about the Pokémon's movepool and stats.
I have now gotten to the Regirock vs Wallace portion of the video and... yeah 😅; but hey, experimentation is interesting and making mistakes and learning from them is part of that, right?
As always, I admire your approach - just *please* consider Adamant, Modest, Timid or Jolly much more often; I get that this is before the Physical-Special split, but I don't think it's usually worth it to have anything else for coverage, especially for Pokémon that are this skewed towards one kind of offense, so they will generally be more useful natures when going in blind for a Pokémon; you always have the next playthrough to make adjustments, if you feel they're really needed.
Ahhh I got to this video late, the Starcraft love always makes me happy, we should play someday! I'll send a message about the new channel as I'm a major expert on BW and can definitely offer some use over the long run.

I've also always felt the Regis were pretty emblematic of their Types! Granted, Regice is indeed slow, which is not ideal, for an Ice Type... but many of them are slow anyway; in that sense, I guess Regice is the quintessential Ice Type Pokémon, rather than incorporating well the Type itself and its strengths.
Glad you went for the 3 playthroughs. Personally, I believe Registeel is the best of the three but the hardest to play optimally due to its defensive playstyle. So thanks Austin haha. But yeah great video.

So many "oh no" moments. Glad you got through it all.
I still have my grandfather's launch Starcraft 1 & Brood War. Very fun games especially playing them as a kid when they came out was so much fun. Lore and books are a very good read. Another game earlier that is fun is Z. I would watch a playthrough of these games for the millionth time.
Finally the originial Regis are my favorite legendaries together with Raikou, Suicune and Entei. Sadly that they are not very usuable in competitive like other legendaries but the idea behind them and how to get them felt special back in the Gen 3 days. Regigigas and the two new regis are cool as well

If you use infested terran correctly, they are brain cancer. But that being said, you have to change entirely from the zerg meta to make them work. Used to use them any chance I got, and usually could never set them up outside a one time use trap. But used correctly? You'll force your enemy to send detectors with anything more than three units. Because it costs you less to kill three with a burrow.

Ah yes, I too appreciate the simplicity of a Pokémon that sounds like a transformer and sticks its right arm to the sky.
It took me until just a few years ago to try making a comp version of each regi to actually appreciate them. Registeel wont be great until gen four, regice wont be great until gen five. chesto, rest, agility, charge beam, ice beam. lots of fun. Scott, gl in platinums lake trio versus. I hope you can make it entertaining.

Registeel is my favorite golem. My guess would be Rock but then i realized Ice has bolt/beam so i guess it could clean house.
Imo though, gigas type fits the theme, but the newer ones being dragon doesn't fit, it should have been Dark. Since they're all weak to fighting. The electric one doesn't really fit either, but its at least kind of symmetrical.
I mean the whole ages of history thing still fits with the newer ones:
Regice - Ice Age
Regirock - Stone Age
Registeel - Iron Age
Regidrago - Dark Age
Regiekeki - Modern Age
Although I will admit the Gen VIII Regis do feel a tad off in that regard
@@pyrotempestwing that does make sense though dark-age makes it feel like dark would probably fit better, but the mythology aspect makes the dragon make sense.

well done Scott. Great watch as usual. I was listening to the vid on 1.25 speed and it sounds much better than the regular speed. Maybe consider changing the speed to 1.25 during production. Just a thought for Scott
Speed controls on RUclips are there if you want to speed it up. It would be awkward to alter my voice in post-production like that.
