Folks! This is what I gathered.. Copy the text and put it on your phone or print it. shouldn't it be this wood right + blade right = inside corner wood right + blade left = outside corner wood left + blade left = inside corner wood left + blade right = outside corner
MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN Blade to your right & wood to your right = Inside corner to the right MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN Blade to your left & wood to your right = Inside corner to the left MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN Wood to your left & Blade to your right = Outside corner to the left MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN Wood to left & Blade to the right = Outside corner to the left MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN Wood to right & Blade to the left= Outside corner to the right Inside Corners - longest measurement is always the bottom Outside corners - longest is always the top YOU'RE WELCOME! 😁
Thank you for putting this into words. Kind of a type of decision tree…you know if you need an outside or inside and on which side right or left. That is the easy part. But then once I flipped it over and had it on the saw I would instantly go stupid!! Don’t know how many times I put the crown to the side waiting for a time when my brain was fresher but thinking about it constantly and then second guessing myself and in the end making mistakes anyway and wasting material. Cutting crown is a humbling experience indeed!Thank you again!!
GENIUS! This is hands down the best tutorial on crown molding. I just could not figure this out for the life of me. Thank you so much for sharing you and your Dad's brilliants!
Everyone else on RUclips just telling you " you have to cut the top side down and cut at an angle" without mentioning that the saw placement on left or right will dictate if an inside or outside cut and just assuming you know that. This is the only one I saw that actually walked through the saw positions needed for each type of corner needed
One challenge not addressed in videos like this are when cutting crown, you're not cutting a 12" piece but rather a 12' piece. Keeping it on the fence perfectly with a piece that long can be difficult and cause the cut to be inaccurate. I prefer and compound-miter cut where the crown can lay flat to cut. All that aside great video, thumbs up from me.
This video made it so easy! We watched several others and were about to quit until I found this one. Thanks and great job our project turned out great 😉👍
I was trying to dope that out myself. I think a speed square or a protractor is part of the answer. In my case, i was about to just ignore our slight vault and just run straight across, as I'm just running some crown below some existing molding. I'd take the existing down and use that as a guide, but the previous owner was even more geometrically challenged than I am. If I needed to conform to the existing line, I'd probably just use trial and error with crap molding, then transfer the angle to the good stuff. I know there is another way to do this, using the 31 degree markings and laying the molding flat and tilting the blade. Presumably, you'd add the angles, but I'm not sure, and I'm out of extra pieces to experiment with. This way works, but its only as precise as your ability to hold the work steady when you make your cut. I'd hate to try addibg an angle while relying on my grip to hold the work to the fence. As it is, I'm avoiding any situations where I would need both ends mitered other than a 90, as I would be making a big expensive scrap pile.
Can you do a video for coping. Basically a 90 degree that I'm installing on craftsman style header over a door way! And demonstrate where to measure please!
This is perfect. After watching few videos on RUclips I was able cut the crown. However, remembering which side to cut when was confusing. This perfect. U can write it down and just go for it. For DIY this is great.
Years back I put up this same crown. Made pattern pieces because videos were not too thorough. I literally forgot to do master bedroom ...oops! So now I'm trying to figure out cutting AANNDD I realized I put the crown up on the other rooms walls upside down...HAHA!! Looks good tho. So I will install MB crown the same way the rest of the house is...Upside down! Thanks! GREAT EASY VIDEO!!
Hey Cindy, I know this reply to your comment is late and I'm sorry. I am trying to keep up but it's pretty difficult. Your not the first one that hung crown upside down. Obviously nobody figured it out but you, after watching the video..Glad the video helped you out. Have a great New Year!
2:53 You should have spent a bit more time explaining your markings on the miter table. I had to watch it a few times to take notes on the proper blade & molding placement, but once I had it, PRESTO! This simple idea made all the difference for me! That is the BEST part of this whole video. Turned crown molding into a no-brainer!
Gary, I will make another video and zoom in on the markings. There are two more ways I install crown that I want to demonstrate. Cutting the crown flat on the miter table and cutting the inside and outside angles and coping the cut to fit. Thanks for the comment and take care!
When and where does the miter angle use for? You only used the bevel angle. I'm confused. Do I really need a compound miter saw to cut crown moulding or not? I believe that based moulding is easier to cut using bevel angle.
Crown can be cut as I show it in the video, it can also be cut laying flat on the table of the saw. If it’s flat, you would use the bevel of the saw for both inside and out cuts. Not needed if you place the crown on the saw as shown in my video. Hope that helps!
This was the best crown tutorial I've found. I've watched approximately 1254 of them. The goal for me now is to figure out exactly WHAT angle my inside (lazy susan) cabinet is at. Thank you!!
You have to turn the table so the top of the crown as it sits on the saw (upside down) ends up being the long point after cutting. I’ll be posting a new video soon covering it again in detail. Please SUBSCRIBE.
The best explanation I have seen on cutting crown molding. I'm installing crown molding in our bathroom today and after watching your video last week...and again this morning, I feel more confident. Thank you !!!
Robert, thanks for THAT comment, if only!!!! I have new videos coming soon so subscribe and share if your willing. Have a great New Year and take care.
Thank you sir. This was the best instructional video I could find. I’ll be watching more. I had already wasted one 16 ft piece but I know how to put half of it back together. I really appreciate the time you spent on this and your sympathy for us poor DIY SLOBS. 😂
It’s a good video except for this. There is no stop block on the front of the saw to stop it from slipping away. The cuts will never be equal. Also, you will never get the inside to be even and equal with this cut. No corner is 90 deg. The one side should be a butt cut and the other a miter that you back cut or cope to fit. That’s the proper way to do it
Probably watched like 10 other videos by now but they all just rushed thru it and even forgot to mention a few things like flipping the crown mold before cutting... Happy i stumbled across your video cause its a gem! Should be on top when searching for how to cut crown molding! Thank you for the video and going into details with everything, really helped me out ! :)
This video really helped me do a crown molding job for a customer. I've always had trouble doing crown. All the videos I saw on RUclips didn't help. However your video is simple to understand. I watched it several times and the next day I was
Good mate! But how do you measure it? Lets say you need this piece to be 255mm e the other one 243mm. I really do not understand =/ I stuff up some pieces until I guessed the right position. Thank you
Hi Mike, good video. I was just wondering how you put the permanent marker on the blue tape. Did you have to measure the angle between the fence and the tape to be 45 degrees?
Why is it done this way when the saw can moved to make less complicated. I’m about to do my own and I’m so lost good thing an extra wrong piece was shipped so I can screw it up
One important detail that is seen in the video but not mentioned: The fence where the molding tilts and sit on has to be tall enough to support the molding sitting at 45 degree angle. And the fence should not stop the blade to cut all the way thru (my miter saw is fix and can't get thru !!!, might have to get another one). In this video, the tall fence is made in wood and somehow get attached flat to the metal fence.
Hey Shacobyl, I'm glad I was able to help. Subscribe and share, I'll be posting new videos soon and a surprise tool I patented for enlarging existing holes and offset holes. Take care
Thank you! I have done crown so infrequently that I have to brush up on it and this basic concept will now be my go to for painted crown. (The coping method is what I have used in the past.) Appreciate your vid!
This is great, but all I have is a mitre box and handsaw and am trying to trim a column, which I assume is four outer corners. I tried using foam crown and it was a mess. 😑
Better than this old house instruction. Love to see you do the measurement and mark the piece and put it up. Do you measure your walls first, cut the pieces, then put it up or do you measure, cut the piece and then measure for the next wall?
I'm trying to frame a brick wall with crown molding, so using the same crown molding on top and the sides instead of doing corner wall molding. How would I need to make the cuts for this to work?
Omg!!! Your a genius!! I just cut my crown molding, I can’t believe it, my husband can’t believe, he said it was too hard to difficult, I just freaking did it!!!! Yasssss!!!! You just saved me $700. Thank you!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍
Well, I really am sorry this response to your comment is so late...Responding to all the comments is so time consuming and I actually have a real job. I am very happy for you and for allowing you to attempt something you thought you could not do. I hope you shared your experience with others and possibly this video!!! Also, glad to have saved you all that money. Are there any other home improvement videos that you would like to see? I'd be happy to make one and give you a shout out! Have a Happy New Year!
Hey Justin, yes I made the fence out of wood due to touching other fences with the blade. It happens and the blades are too expensive, so yeah! Take care..
Great video. I have watched this several times. One add on to my miter I learned by watching was to add a taller skirt and this enabled me to get a better seat on the crown molding (top and bottom). I simply through bolted a 3/8" finished scrap piece of plywood to the fence on the left and right side of the blade (counter sunk the machine screws). Just make sure when you lower the blade that the housing clears the taller fence when cutting at a 45 degree angle.
THANK YOU for this video! I'm fairly handy, but crown molding has been my nemesis for years until this video. GREAT VIDEO! Kitchen cabinet crown installed!

Rohan, sorry for the late response. Watch the video again and I think you will get what I mean. I hope the video helped you, take care and Happy New Year!
Thanks for the information! I watched a few other videos but I came back to yours and kept referring to it. The tape trick is awesome and also writing the notes about which side you are cutting on and the angle of the saw to give the correct cut. Those were key points that helped me a lot. Thanks again!
Hey Michael, sorry for responding so late to your comment. Thank you for letting me know that it helped, make me feel like it was a good use of time for a video that helped many. I hope you have a great New Year and take care.
Hands down the best teaching video. I’ve wasted so many . Thanks !
Awesome video. Clear and easy to understand.
Very informative and detailed. I love the step by step.
Richard, thanks for the comments. Glad to help.

wood right + blade right = inside corner
wood right + blade left = outside corner

wood left + blade right = outside corner
chughes737 Maybe! I’m almost ready to do more cutting. I’ll test it out.🤣
THANK YOU CHRIS!!!
@@chughes737 You are correct
you have it reversed when material to the left of the saw
You have a good video than other person I am planning put crown moulding inside my kitchen
Man, very good. And I can just taste that Bosch miter saw! What a great machine.
Very nice and informative,
I'm glad I was able to help. Please subscribe and share, hope a wonderful New Year!
Thank you for this video!!
Important start out with a good saw
Mark, I agree 100%. I would use a fine finish blade if you have a lot of trim to install.
MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN
Blade to your right & wood to your right = Inside corner to the right
MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN
Blade to your left & wood to your right = Inside corner to the left
MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN
Wood to your left & Blade to your right = Outside corner to the left
MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN
Wood to left & Blade to the right = Outside corner to the left
MOLDING UPSIDE DOWN
Wood to right & Blade to the left= Outside corner to the right
Inside Corners - longest measurement is always the bottom
Outside corners - longest is always the top
YOU'RE WELCOME! 😁

What if the corners are not 90 degrees angle? What would you do if it's 93 degrees angle?
A1 indeed cheers
All the comments are much appreciated. Thanks for watching and I hope to help more people.
This sounds great until you get a 12 foot piece of molding that you can't hold and cut at the same time
Beautiful video
Thanks you
I literally had to watch this video for 15 minutes before each cut , I'll NEVER do this again.

In 7 minutes explained a outside and inside corner better than 30 minute videos I’ve watched. 🫠
Awesome! Wrote them down on index cards to keep for my records. Thanks man, genius instructions!
Too much explanation before beginning the task. By the time you started cutting I was confused with all of the instructions.
I'm new to this and disagree. He spent about a minute on this. Short and straightforward.

The best and simplest video on crown molding. I don't think it would be that hard if I could find a video that properly explains it. Thank you!
Can you please explain angles for crown molding on angled ceilings. No one ever explains it.
I was trying to dope that out myself. I think a speed square or a protractor is part of the answer.

Smithmt13, thanks for the comment. Glad to help.

Many many many thanks! I had been intimidated for a sec, thought about paying someone...😂 I GOT THIS!!!
Does that work with 50/37 crown
Thank you
Best crown moulding video on youtube. Very explanatory.
Why is it EVERYTIME I attempt this it’s an outside corner.
I seriously don’t get it.

Time to upgrade the tools!!!
They should delete all other crown videos! Thank you. Very succinct

But how do you measure it?

I stuff up some pieces until I guessed the right position.

Hi Mike, good video. I was just wondering how you put the permanent marker on the blue tape. Did you have to measure the angle between the fence and the tape to be 45 degrees?
I had to watch one part repeatedly because it wasn't making sense to me.
Then I realized you had flipped the work twice.
Why is it done this way when the saw can moved to make less complicated. I’m about to do my own and I’m so lost good thing an extra wrong piece was shipped so I can screw it up

Best explanation I have ever heard. Good teacher. Very clear. I will tape those maxims to my saw as you have. I’ve wasted too much stock not to.
This is great, but all I have is a mitre box and handsaw and am trying to trim a column, which I assume is four outer corners. I tried using foam crown and it was a mess. 😑
Thank you so much. Very understandable 👌🏾

did some crown molding after this and all i can say is that it's still tricksy when doing a lot of it.
Omg!!! Your a genius!! I just cut my crown molding, I can’t believe it, my husband can’t believe, he said it was too hard to difficult, I just freaking did it!!!! Yasssss!!!! You just saved me $700. Thank you!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍

Is that a home made fence made of wood?
Hey Justin, yes I made the fence out of wood due to touching other fences with the blade. It happens and the blades are too expensive, so yeah! Take care..
Excellent teaching
Great video. I have watched this several times. One add on to my miter I learned by watching was to add a taller skirt and this enabled me to get a better seat on the crown molding (top and bottom). I simply through bolted a 3/8" finished scrap piece of plywood to the fence on the left and right side of the blade (counter sunk the machine screws). Just make sure when you lower the blade that the housing clears the taller fence when cutting at a 45 degree angle.
I been trying to cut the side but I can’t
Watch the video again, I’ll post another soon and hope it helps.
fantastic mike thank you great explanation and video again thanks a million
Where have you been? Best video by far on cutting crown molding
THANK YOU for this video! I'm fairly handy, but crown molding has been my nemesis for years until this video. GREAT VIDEO! Kitchen cabinet crown installed!
Ed, Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment.

thank you so much for your video! I was able to do my crown molding by myself and am feeling quite accomplished.

"SAWSET PROTRACTOR" is the most accurate miter finder out there. No Math. No gimmick.
Do the comparison.
Thanks! Great instruction. I needed this to repair a five cut section in an old house.
Great, glad it helped
Mike, excellent video. Was cutting inside corners on crown today, and your video was a tremendous help.
Hey Dale, Sorry so late in responding. I'm so glad to have helped out. Any ideas for new videos? Let me know, take care and have a great New Yer!

Great Mike! Thanks for this crown tutorial. You explained it very simply!

Best video on how to cut crown molding 👍
I still don't know
