The bowls are beautiful. Here in south Louisiana Tallow trees are looked upon as trash trees. Not many get a chance to grow very big before they start to rot or get cut down. The wood from a small tree is most often white in color , but if allowed to dry in a dry area, it can develop brown streaks in the wood. I have a neighbor that has a large Tallow tree in his backyard that’s about 50 years old. He told me that he plans to have it cut down. I told him that I want all the good wood from it.
That's what I've heard as well. I was in my house one morning and heard a nearby chainsaw. Looked outside and saw a guy up in a tree starting to cut it down at the house across the street. Texted them and asked if I could have some and got a couple large chunks and a nice crotch section which had some amazing feathering.
Robert, I loved watching this... but for a different reason. I wish every Woodturner used this so as to not waste that inner core that always gets turned away and ends up on the floors. But I'm sure it's not always practical to do this. I've seen so much beautiful wood end up in the floor. Anyway, I loved these for the reason you showed. These bowls go together so well. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
Thanks so much Vickie! That was the reasoning behind buying it. It isn't too practical on bowl blanks which are below 10in to start but when they get larger it's definitely handy to have!
Absolutely Coswood! While this coring equipment is a bit pricey, you do get a lot of extra bowls. I bought it cause I've got a couple of Oak burls which I want to core!
Love seeing turning making and saving money by coring the wood and not just making shavings on the floor!!!! They all look beautiful and you great job making them all! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
I live in Alvin, TX, and am just getting into woodturning. Because there is so much Chinese Tallow in our area I specifically searched RUclips for Chinese Tallow projects to see if anyone was turning it. I don't know if all Tallow blanks turn out looking this nice but was very impressed with your finished bowls. Tallow has a very noticeable smell when cut, burned, etc. I assume that after finishing a bowl you can pretty much use it for food items as you would any of the other more common wood used for bowls.
Hi, thanks for watching. I was told that Chinese tallow is toxic so I'm not 100% sure I'd recommend it for food. I myself would be fine putting rolls, biscuits or popcorn. Probably wouldn't use it for anything with much liquid. Since you're in the area have a look at Gulf Coast Woodturners Association. It's the local club in Houston and a great way to learn about woodturning!
I really like ur videos and I’ve seen ur stickers on there so much that I have decided to try the Thompson tools ordered my first one the other day an 1-1/4 skew chisel can’t wait to get started with it
They were just having it all hauled off by the tree cutting service so o figured I'd take a few. I bet my other neighbors thought I looked silly rolling a dolly with logs on it across the street.
Thanks Bill. Harry is ok he's got cat like reflexes and always lands on his feet. Plus the floor was covered with shavings which helped cushion the impact.
With the Oneway coring system you can purchase 4 different cutting knives. The largest knife allows you to core up to an 18in diameter by 7.5in deep bowl. You could likely start with a 20in bowl black and start with the largest knife to get the 18in blank, then the other knives would allow you to go down to a 9.5in diameter bowl blank.
Thanks for the response, that gives me some idea of what I need. I have a laguna 1836 revo, so from what you just said I'll only need the 3 smaller blades?
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks yes 2hp. Where did you get yours? From Oneway, Amazon, or a woodworking store, looking for customer service. Looked at Oneway online, you can't order online from them.
Amazon sells the version that I have. The base is sold separately from each of the knives. You just have to make sure that the base you get is made for your lathes swing size. amzn.to/40ERt9t

I like your videos very much but you can be a little cruel to Harry at times though; poor little fella. I was wondering how old he is in Beaver years as well as human. I wish I had a coring system it would save the amount wastage and the bin loads of shavings I throw away which could be bowls. Well done, loved it.
Thanks Frederick! Harry and I have a great relationship! We are like best buds where we wrestle around every know and then but we both know we've got each others backs. I believe he's about 25yrs old in human years....which makes him....I'd guess 4 years in beaver?
Great job, a huge piece wood, very beautiful bowl,👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much Gao!
That turning video is so divine and the music is mighty fine! I love it!
Glad you like it Rick!

Thanks Radar. I love the coring setup!
Nice. Love the way this wood turned for you.
Me too Doug! I've got two halves of a crotch piece from the same tree which I've excited to turn into some bowls or platters!

Nice Robert. That was one big tallow tree. They usually don’t survive long enough to get that big. Well done.
Thanks Jason. It was pretty big. It had been growing in my neighbors backyard.
beautiful bowls, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Joyce!
Good Job Robert. Nice Project.
Thanks Brian! I'm glad they dried without any cracking!
Fantastic work love it love it.
Thank you so much 😀
Stunning bowl Robert, I am going to start saving up for the Oneway coring system, keep well, Rob
If you've got a lot of large blanks then it pays for itself after you sell a couple of nested bowl sets. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Glad I found your channel!
Thanks Parker! I'm glad you found it too!
Thanks for sharing, those turned out great. Full View and Like 👍
Thanks Allen!
Well done hodge very nice set of bowl
Thanks Barry!
Very well done, Hodge!!!! Awesome to see the coring system and finished nesting bowls!!!
Thanks DD! I'm glad they dried well after rough turning! Much better than a set of Oak bowls I cored!

Thanks so much! I'm definitely happy i got the coring system and try to use it anytime I can!

Great to hear maxfli! You'll love Doug's tools!
The coring system is awesome, unfortunately my lathe is too small for something like that. Great work, love the bowls
Yes they are awesome! I'm lucky to have come across a good deal on my lathe!
Where did you get a huge piece of Chinese Tallow, you are very good neighbor!

They all look great, Robert. That coring system sure saves a lot of wood plus makes nice matching pieces. Is Harry ok after his fall? Take care.
Bill

I'm interested in a coring setup. What was the diameter of your starting blank, and what's the largest bowl you can get with this system?

Yeah, I dont think I've used the largest knife yet. Is your lathe 2hp? If not there might be a bit of a struggle when you core.

Was Harry getting a face full on that first small bowl turn? Did he leave any tooth marks that needed sanding out? 😂 🤪
Valerie, Harry knows his place. One bad decision years ago about biting my bowls is all he needed to know never to do that again.
