  • Here are some basic maintenance tips that help your chainsaw operate at its maximum potential. Personally I want to know as much as I can about my equipment. A good sawyer places emphasis on knowing how to maintain their equipment.
I definitely don't know everything there is to know, as sometimes I reach out for help myself. The more you know the more effective you can be!

I refill, clean and sharpen each saw after it was used. Sometimes this takes longer to do than the saws were in use. I often use multiple saws and several hours cleaning, afterwards, makes a long day a lot longer.

@@usaisalwaysnumber1 cutting big wood it is often unavoidable. I sharpen any saw after use, whether it needs it or not. I also carry several saws with me for just those occurrences. It took me three sharpening to get my ms 360 back up to my standards. I also had to file down the top and bottom of the bar to remove the abrading the sand caused. Stoned it, too. That is just one of the reasons that I do not like laminated bars - they are to soft for hard cutting in sand. I do like their weight differential over standard Oilimatic E bars. My 440 finished bucking up that 25 inch hickory with no problems. That wood was so heavy I could not roll it over and finish up the cut. Those rounds weighed 200# a piece and I did not have a Peavy with me.

One word of advice when filling gas and oil tanks - brush off any saw dust or dirt from around them before filling. This keeps and stuff from getting in your tanks, blocking the filters over time.

Sprocket E clip - reinstall with a pair of pliers. Pushing it in with a screwdriver or screech is a sure fire way to loose it. I start it in the groove and grab the top of the E clip with a pair of pliers and snap it in the groove.

Could you talk about bar and chain options for the 460?
When cutting hardwoods what's the reasonable limit for milling?

When cleaning the PTO side, clean out the bar oil port before you blow things off because any sawdust in the port, actually a slot, can be blown down into the oil line feeding the port, blocking oil delivery to the bar.
