Hey man, this is a great general maintenance video, I have just received my Dad's MS460 (I think a 2001 or 2002 model) and it's my first one, so really happy with it but your guide will help me alot to get to know it and maintain. Cheers from Australia.
I bought my 460 about the same time you got yours. I thought I did all the maintenance but you showed me a few new things to do. Thanks! BTW-it is my favorite saw!
I have a 460 Magnum the same model and age as this. I always clean the needle bearing with degreaser/thinnners/acetone/brake-clean and then dry it out and then spray high temp grease into the bearing making sure it is packed in fully. You can buy high temp grease is a hand held spray can with a plastic squirter nozzle. The rest of the saw I clean with degreaser and water before hand cleaning with rags.
Thanks for the advice, I like to use Lucas Red N’ Tacky. A buddy of mine got me started on it a number of years ago. It was -5 Fahrenheit over the weekend and I came across an old used tube in my garage that has been sitting for probably about 5 years or better and the little bit that was left in the tube was just a tacky as it was when it was brand new. Thanks for watching. 🤙
Great video! Just bought a MS 460 2002 model. But here in Norway we don't have these "western fully wrap handles". I would love to get one on the 460, aswell as the large original Stihl type log dogs. Do you have any item or part number for the handle? Have done a little searching and it looks like the 460 came with 2 different clutch covers, depending which type log dogs? When I am finishing cleaning my Stihl saws, I like to give them a spray of WÜRTH´s silicon spray, and let it sit for a bit - then wipe off the access. That'll keep the savage coming off easier on the next cleaning. Also it helps the plastic bits and rubber bits on the saw against sunlight and cracking. Best regards, Ola - Norway :)
Hey man great video. When you put the clutch drum back on you dont need to worry about finding the arm just place the drum in the clutch and spin until you hear a click that means its in
I clean up everything on all my saws and blow them out when I use it each time,I also inspect my bar and chain, but man,Your saw looks brand new! I picked up my 460 in 2006,I think, and it has cut MANY cords of wood but now that my body is garbage I don't use her much anymore.
Thank You sir, I honestly have never cleaned the spark resistor. You bring up a good point though. I’m assuming you’re talking about the spark arrestor screen on the muffler. I honestly have not cleaned mine because I put the muffler on it recently (within the last couple of years) and I haven’t used the saw enough to be concerned about performance loss and/or internal damage due to the restrictions from built up carbon restricting airflow etc. Thanks for the suggestion and Thanks for watching.
This is great stuff, brother. Chainsaws seem to constantly try to kill themselves with all the goodies they collect. The nature if their job means that they are instantly filthy as soon as they touch wood. What you're doing adds years to its life and keeps the hair on you head instead of pulling it out in the woods fighting a saw that won't operate correctly.
Nice video man very well put together and good information now get over to my place I got twelve saws you can clean up lol keep up the good content waiting for the next video
I think in the video I said somewhere around 2009 but thinking back on it I had it for my oldest kids first birthday. So I think I purchased this saw in the winter of 2010 going into 2011.

Great knowledge. How about the spark resistor? How to clean, maintain and the effects of it?
Thank You sir, I honestly have never cleaned the spark resistor. You bring up a good point though. I’m assuming you’re talking about the spark arrestor screen on the muffler. Why no new videos. Really good info I always just used the compressor so the brush is a good idea for the chain.
I started my own business in April of 2022. I’ve been extremely busy. I’m hoping to make some more content soon.
