Finally you caved and used flex track !!!! You will find things run a lot better.
Congrats! It may never seem like much to some, but I think every modeler understands one of the greatest joys in the process is that first loop up and working, regardless of how much work there is to go!
Hi Dave. I have found, especially when doing n scale flex track, if your joints are staggered in a curve, there is a significantly less chance of the joint kinking and out of guage. A little tip leave a joint or two unsloder with a gap for expansion and contraction. I didnt think it would matter in the basement, but unfortunately it did and now im fixing track.Take care. Sean.
Staggering the joints makes a huge difference!
awesome Scott thanks for sharing.😊😊👍👍
Love the new layout. At first I thought that locomotive would have hauled the single level Hawker Siddeley RTC-85 S (like the one on display at the CN tower). But upon further research, the GP40M-2 did in fact haul the Bombardier bi-level coaches we see today.
That Is Looking Really Sharp👍👍👍👍.
Well done. I am looking forward to the rest of the build.
track is coming together beautifully. as far as that GO locomotive, its a GP40M-2's. they were former Rock Island Units, no generators so they would have to be coupled with another locomotive, such as an F40 in order to be used for passenger service. they were traded in in the 90's for the F59PH which you will still see on the Lakeshore West lines frequently.
I have not run my Trains in several years, on the track. I run them on rollers several times a year(my O-scale) To busy on Scenery and Structures. I run some of my Ho a few times a year on the track. Good job Dave, Thanks for sharing!
Very Nice! Always good to see the first run go well. The bigger curves look so much better than the 18" radius curves. Thanks for sharing.
Well done Dave!!👍👏
Sweet!🤘🤘🤘🤘. Little By Little.
Hi ,hand of god , awesome track laying, very nice green loco 😊😊😊😊😊😊 have a good one mate
very nice again Dave
Great job laying and testing out your new track! That UP engine sure looks nice!
Congrats on your first loop/mainline. Always check for continuity/dead spots as you lay track down. Keep chuffing along, but please get some rest!
No dead spots, every inch has power, lol.
Looking good and sounding nice and smooth.
Great track work from the bridge transition. Loco didn't even wiggle Congratulations on running the 1st train on your new layout. Cheers from eastern TN
Thanks. I figured of all the places I needed a perfect join, the bridge was it.
Hey Dave I think you need to connect the wires from the isolated track after the bridge to the bridge so when the bridge is lifted and the power is cut to the bridge it also cuts the power to the isolated section of track
Next project suggestion: motorise the bridge somehow so it truly becomes a lift bridge :)
Excellent stuff, great progress. Yeah, get those trains running, big curves rule.....;)
Now you can go to bed!!!! Haha great work. I'm excited to see how your going to super elevate your curves.
Great work indeed Scotty! Thanks for sharing and inviting us over. Happy Railroading
Looks great - you are off to a cracking good start!
I don't use flux when soldering the wires to the rails. I use a small wire wheel in my Dremel tool to polish the rail and use resin cored solder. Eliminates corrosion from left over flux.
Brilliant Job Dave nice one!
Good job Dave, congrats on your first track loop, no more withdrawls.. 😁😁
Looking great my friend, now enjoy trains when you are building or relaxing 👍
Yes they were the locos that pulled the bilevel carts when they were first introduced way back in like the 70s and yes I was there lol
know the happy Feeling * Happy Rails*
GREAT RUN!!!!!! NICE WORK AND NICE LOOKING LOCO. congrats
Bravo! You work fast! Looks great… looking forward to new developments!
Wow! I am impressed on what you have done, great job, and great locomotive!
A real test would be to add a few Athearn Bombardier coaches and give it a run ! Great work, you should be happy with your running now !
Lookin good Dave! FUN to have a new layout to run on!! ENJOY!!!
Im a new fan, very cool and i like how u explain every step , im here to the final detail of this neat build you created
Yes, getting that first loop done. Great joy ! You can cut out the small section of plastic between the underside of your track in between the ties. Then you can slid the ties to give you a little more room.
Yeah a full loop. Congrats Dave, it's promising for the rest. Greetings from Hai
What fantastic work, well done. Inspirational for my own layout.
Great job looking good well done 👍
Coming along nicely dave
Hi Dave, with regards to the GO GP40 theres a nice section on Wikipedia about these specific locos. Heres a snippet from the page. "Much like the GP40-2(W)'s 700-710, they were not equipped with a HEP engine and generator, and so were not capable of powering a train by themselves. Thus, they had to be paired with either another locomotive that did provide HEP, or with one of the 900-series Auxiliary Power/Control Units (APCU) or the 800-series Auxiliary Power Units (APU). These units were also equipped with pass-through HEP cables, so that they could be coupled between an APCU and the rest of the train." Ex Rock Island purchases which GO Transit bought once they were rebuilt by Chrome Crankshaft at the Silvis shops after Rock Islands liquidation.
Excellent job , cool locomotive, interesting tool for cutting track
I was getting annoyed with the little clippers. Why give yourself more work.
Dave I totally understand, you use what works
Fantastic update.. always good to see a train run around the layout for the first time.. I'm still in the planning stages of my On30 layout.. could go with OO scale, but switch over to On30 for now..
Really need to stagger the joints in curves. Even with soldering, you can develop kinks in the rail.
Nicely done Dave, im about to start some benchwork on my own layout now after ive done my renovations. as for the GO transit, I've only ever seen locos like that in the yards shifting coaches, but on occasion they probably ran them. GO only uses the double decker "bombardier" cars, and they usually comes in packs of 3. if you don't mind second hand, there is actually a few people selling some in sets on Facebook around the Toronto area, but the prices can be a bit steep due to some brands discontinuing making them (Athern and Walters). otherwise, you'd have to buy them new, in singles from Rapido. Rapido is always great, but you defiantly pay for that detail. hope this helps a bit
I had an idea that maybe on the right side if you're standing at the fold up bridge facing the rest of the layout where on the inside of the loop on the right side of the bridge, you could put a roundhouse for all your engines
They were hauling the new bi-level coaches.
Wow Dave, really great work
Nice job, Loco runs well, if not a colour scheme for me 🙂
Are you more of a Rangers man? lol
@ScottRails yes mate, season ticket holder, but a fan of football rather the the nonsense that goes with it. Still I have just bought a NS Heritage Unit that's green and yellow :-) progress
Nice job Dave! Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant job well done
Very nice, congrats on the new layout! I will be starting my switching layout next weekend!
GO Transit( Metrolinx ) still runs some of those locos on the bilevel cars, here in the Kitchener area anyway
Small correction - the Locomotive here is the GP40 - they were retired in the late 80s. They look quite similar to the F50phs that are on the Kitchener line. As for passenger cars, they ran the original Hawker Siddeley coaches as well as the Bombardier bi-level cars.
Thanks for correcting me, Denny. They do look very similar.
The New engine is a atlas GP40 that was custom run through tru line trains and it could pull the double deckers they were used into the early 2000s
Thanks Dawson.
@@ScottRails your very welcome
Bombardier passenger cars for your new Loco. Athearn and Rapido make them and they are expensive. I have 7 of the Athearn and they are terrible passenger cars to work with and pull. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Thanks
Thank you Peter. More track funds.
Great video 😅
Clip off a couple coils on your little springs and it'll sit down level
But then that would defy the point of the springs. I want tension against both surfaces. My magnetic clips arrived today. I'll update on the next video.
@@ScottRails I guess I thought that the springs were being used for extra continuity ..... layouts taking shape looking good...
Yes, you're right. They are filling a void between the sides of the dowels. But if they are slack, they will serve no purpose.
Just an FYI if you ever run European Marklin, Roco, Fleischmann train brands, to name a few companies, most will not run Code 83. Because the flanges might be too big, these trains need to run on Code 100. Personal experience on this.
Ok then, no Marklin for me then, lol.
Great job Dave!! Nice loco,s a great addition to the fleet I have 2 go trains and they work well they run almost silent.I know where there are at least 6 mint passenger cars.they have been there for a long time ,a great guy to deal with don't know if your willing to go to Stratford .leave how to get a hold of you ,if you can leave it in your replie I'll give you his number.
Thanks Terry, but at the moment, I have zero funds, lol. Track was expensive, but crucial I think.
Excellent work. Can't wait to follow your progress! Liked and Subbed! Cheers, Andy
Thanks Andy. Should have another update tomorrow.
Excelente información. Muchas gracias, saludos desde Perú
I am following your layout progress closely. Too bad I was not able to use your great tips on my Nscale layout
As for your passenger station, why don't you paint the building or just put the front of the building attached to the wall as part of the background so you have more room to do scenery and maybe some stuff in between the platform closest to you when you're standing facing the platforms and the inner loop track
Roundhouse and turntable
62 years ago I started my layout and used super elevation but now wish that I hadn't. On successve extension of the layout I left the track level
The problem I have is that when long trains are climbing the 3% grade on the 24 inch radius curve, there is the danger of counterflow hoppers being pulled inwards off the track as the super elevation shifts the centre of gravity of the car towards the inside of the curve. The problem is more apparent when the train is travelling slow. I will admit that it does look better but I question the overall value when the overbalance can cause a problem.
Thanks Roland, I never thought of that.
Eh Dave If You want Get Some Small Sectional Track To Help The Flextrack as A Partner if you Need It when Needed If you Want and You Know That Makes Sence.
👍
Great job, but for cutting track wy domt you used your dremell it will be easyer
Not sure how a dremell would be easier than a pair of snips, lol.
@@ScottRails you have to used a cuting dics. check on you tube
Hi Dave, did you isolate the track on the controller end of the bridge to protect your loco's when the bridge is up?
Another informative session!
Not yet. I'll do that when I install the micro switch.
I've got to learn how to do super elevations any chance that could be your next video? If not, do you have a link of a video you have used/learned from? Thank You
Maybe not my next video, but very soon. It won't take long.
Was that long bit a masonry bit perchance? It seemed a bit slow when it bit the ply!
It said "multi purpose" on the packet, lol.
Good work. Where will the train lose power if the bridge is up?
Either side of the bridge for about 14 inches.
👍
When They Make Flex track They Should have Had the holes Drilled so The Modeler Doesn’t have To waste Time to Drill the Holes Before Assembling and You know I Am right .
There are holes, but they are only 90 percent through the plastic. It's so you can have the option of glueing without seeing any holes.
Cool.
👍😀OperateOnOperator
I'm new to this hobby, so, sorry if this is a dumb question. But is there a reason for not soldering to the bottom of the track instead of the sides?
No, that's a perfectly sensible question. I decided not to solder to the bottom, as it's easier to fault find if you have a bad connection somewhere. If it's underneath the rail, you don't have access.
