- In this video we're comparing Donovan and Richard Thompson, and their renditions of Season Of The Witch. We really enjoyed this song when we reacted to it last season by Donovan. We've read that Richard is a songwriter as well, so we're curious what his take on the song will be. Please let us know who you think did it better. Enjoy!

Richard Thompson is a legend. He began his career as the lead guitarist for Fairport Convention. They were famous for changing from a rock band to Britains first folk rock group. The legendary Sandy Denny (Who Knows Where The Time Goes) was their singer for a few years. Thompson is known as both a remarkable guitarist and a songwriter. His guitar style incoporporates passion and uniques chording and expressions that other guitarists find difficult to reproduce. He published a guitar book that included over 40,000 guitar chords. Many guitarists bought it but were intimidated by it. Others made good recommendations but I will include Reno Nevada. It was the Fairport Convention song (Judy Dyble and Ian Matthews singers) that got them noticed by producers, mainly because of Thompson's guitar solo. Also check out his solo work like Hard On Me and I Feel So Good I'm Going to Break Somebody's Heart Tonight. Thompson did a tour called 1000 Years of Popular music, where he explored how music developed through history. He winds it up with a humorous cover of Britney Spears' Oops, I Dit It Again, which is ironic, because it is a polar opposite of anything resembling Thompson's music. Leave it to Thompson to do that song and actually make it sound good. LOL!
Richard Thompson is one of those artists that has for years been critically acclaimed without any significant commercial success, which is an astonishing mystery.
His own compositions have been covered by such luminaries as REM and Elvis Costello, collaborations with such as Sandy Denny, John Martyn, Nick Drake and his wife Linda etc, etc. A years worth of coal to be mined from this rich seam of music.
Start with "Meet on the Ledge" and keep mining 😊
You should also check out the cover by Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Stephen Stills on the Super Session album. It was very popular in its day. You may know Stephen Stills from Bufallo Springfield, Manassas, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. You should really check out all of them. Very prolific. Too many great songs to recommend. Just explore them.
Donovan❤❤❤
One of the key tracks from Donovan's best album. A brilliant album, where the hit title track is outshone by almost all the others. By contrast, it's a bit of a throwaway for RT, not close to central to his oeuvre. Not even on an album (it was commissioned for a soundtrack). RT is my absolute favorite singer-songwriter-guitarist, and I love what he brings to to this cover. But it's in service to the Donovan original, not even attempting to seize it as his own, just adapting it to his own style and voice. I vote Donovan on this one.
A Joni Mitchell vs Richard Thompson 'Woodstock' would be interesting
I'm so glad that I introduced you this great Donovan track last year. Richard Thompson is a British artist best known for the band 'Fairport Convention" during the '60s and early '70s. A good cover but my favourite is the original by, Donovan.
And in the late '60s and briefly in the early '70s, Fairport Convention also featured Sandy Denny, possibly the greatest British folk-rock singer ever. (There are many covers out there of a few of the songs that she sang first, plus more traditional songs that she just sang best.)
Thanks for the comparison and I'm glad you so enjoyed RT's version.
If you want more (and very different styles of) RT you might start with Meet on the Ledge and Sloth by Fairport Convention also his incredible guitar work on Who Knows Where the Time Goes sung by Sandy Denny when she was in Fairport.
Shoot Out the Lights, Wall of Death, Dimming of the Day (a VERY large choice of comparisons with this one) and I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight are the usual favourites from his Richard and Linda Thompson years.
Solo, try Tearstained Letter, Beeswing, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, Cooksferry Queen, I Feel So Good and in a similar style to Season of the Witch, Can't Win.
There's hundreds of more gems by all three of his acts. His version of Oops I Did It Again! is very funny.
He does folk, blues, rock, jazz, soul and all combinations thereof. Truly a barely appreciated genius.
Richard Thompson is a great guitarist and songwriter! I would recommend "Beeswing" from Richard's, "Mirror Blue" album.
Please can I also put in a mention for Laura Marling, who has just released her eighth studio album, "Patterns in Repeat". This is Laura's first album in four years! I would highly recommend the official lyric video for her beautiful and clever song, "Caroline". Many thanks!
Donovan version for me.
The Donavan version was used by the show 'Salem'. Great show, and watched this year, so that version is planted firmly in my brain, but hey, the guitar in the second version is awesome.
RT
One of the worlds greatest guitarists.
Two different songs.
You have to listen to more Richard Thompson, Fairport Convention, Richard & Linda Thompson etc.
His acoustic guitar work is just as amazing.
....For novelty value - Listen to his live arrangement/interpretation of Britany Spears "Oops I did it Again"- played in different styles.
This is a Fantastic track. There are a lot of Covers of this oot there. It could be as early as '65, '66.
My Vote 🗳 - Donovan 🧙♀️ 🧙♂️
FFS, again.
@SPKdesign1 I am the .. Hurdy Gurdy Man ! 💊
Classic lead break from Richard Thompson but going for Donovan. Cheers.
What you said. 😃
I've always put Donovan down as a second rate purveyor of fey nursery rhymes but there is an underlying darkness and heaviness to this song and Richard Thompson takes its inherent drama and absolutely wrings the neck of it. I regard Richard Thompson as being among the most talented musicians and writers I've ever heard, as well as being an inspirational guitar player, so thanks Donovan for the song but RT wins this one.
If you want to explore Richard's vast (nearly 60 years) catalog and have another Who Did It Better David Gilmour covered one of Richard's greatest songs, "Dimming of the Day." Richard's ex-wife Linda is one of my favorite singers so the fact that Gilmour even comes close is amazing, but the Thompsons' version is the gold standard.
When you have someone like David Gilmore saying Richard Thompson is one of the best guitarists in the world (and covering his songs in concert) you know you are on a good thing! RT has over 20 solo albums, plus 6 albums as a duo with his former wife Linda in the 70s and early 80s, and several albums with Fairport Convention, who he was a founding member of. Not to mention numerous collaborations with others. So certainly not “just” a singer songwriter with a few of his own songs. He’s a genius songwriter with an extraordinary turn of phrase, and an outstanding guitarist, both electric and acoustic. Plenty of people have covered his songs, across multiple genres - even the Pointer Sisters, who got a hit out of his song “Don’t let a thief steal into your heart” in the 70s.
You definitely need to check out some Richard Thompson - you won’t be disappointed.
Donovan is a fellow countryman of mine, I believe he is from just along the road from Malcolm and Angus young, over in Glasgow, but I must admit even though I'm biased, I'm giving the second one top marks aswell, another draw 🏴✌️
I don't tink I've heard a Bad version of it so far.
I would like to make a request...respectfully and not ever anything else...your first date and the obvious love that carries through...👍🇦🇺
Donovan by a whisker.
Thanks
thank you
They're simply not comparable. Thompson, as much as I love the guy, was only doing a tribute to the song, rather than trying to make his own stand-alone version. (The guitar solo is smashing, though.) He's excellent, but he doesn't capture the essence of the song, and I don't think he even intended to. He was just having a bit of fun.
Lots of respect for Richard Thompson, I'd pick him over Donovan any time, but not this song. I love the zany solo though.
And the winner is...
Vanilla Fudge with their 1968 version. It is much creepier and spooky than the 2 versions you played. Unfortunately, you missed a trick there.
Second is Donovan and third is Thompson ( whilst appreciate his fine guitar skills,he solos for too long on this track and misses the essence of the song).
By the way, Vanilla Fudge were a major influence on early Deep Purple.....if you are interested.
richard thomson has a new album out, i particularly like singapore sadie off of it. there are too many classics from him to choose one, everything off of the album liege and leaf by fairport convention is perfect though
ps keep up the good work 🤣
Love did it better always btw ❤

If you want to watch him playing acoustic try 1952 Vincent Black Lightning- ruclips.net/video/j0kJdrfzjAg/видео.htmlsi=i1HATLBHTiCFq-d6 - close your eyes and you’d swear there were three guitars being played.
the best version is from the album SUPER SESSION with Steve Stills and company..just fyi
Lana Del Rey also covered this song.
The best version of Season of the Witch is.... ruclips.net/video/NWkMMXgQohc/видео.html Listen for yourself & agree or disagree.
Something about Donovan I just can't stand. This is a decent song though. Richard Thompson can basically do no wrong. Here's a couple of my favourites, but there are dozens, all different (he does a baroque style cover of Oops I did it again! 😆) ruclips.net/video/TDNzhiR_hp8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/_Sap3JK8CxE/видео.html
Wow! Hardcore. Great songs, but rather, um, difficult... Not songs I'd choose to recommend as an introduction.
