- I've done my homework on some of the basics and now I'm back to paint my 2nd ever Warhammer 40k Space Marine. From Paint thining the layers and some tiny extra details I'm going to take what I've learned and see how much improvement we can make on the first marine from the infernus marines beginner set.

Wow! This video is amazing! want more video like this.
Tip for keeping your hands steadier, sit with your back up against a good chair (poor posture will really come to bite you in the ass after a short while being hunched over). Both elbows on your table. Use a pinky finger to keep the model steady. No matter how steady you think your hand is we will all make mistakes and go over lines! But good positioning really helps keep things tidier
@@Johnno-o2v oh that's a good point.
I've definitely fallen into bad shrimp posture, leaning in as close as I can get haha
I have just bought the little podium/Handel I mentioned in this video so I'm keen to see if that and your tips help thank you
@ seriously you’ll very quickly notice it 😂 I’ve only gotten back into warhammer in the last few weeks and already feel my back going from shit posture
13:08 Tips for using the shade:
You can water this one down, too! When the shade dries on part of the surface, it leaves an obvious edge.
I like to water down a shade a lot, then apply it over all the parts on the mini where you want that shading. It will gather in the details and become really thin on the large open areas :)
(As a bonus tip, you can glaze on your original base colour on the brightest areas to get that true blue colour back.)
Ah awesome, I thought with it basiclly being water already you woulnd't be able to but If you can I might give it a go!
As a beginning painter myself I enjoy watching this type of video where people discover the wonder of mini painting. Everyone else has already given plenty of good suggestions. The only one I offer is using your brush to grab paint from the pots. Shake them good, and don't pour from them as you'll get too much paint and waste it. Keep up your journey. It's a fun one for sure! (PS. Corax white is such a horrible paint, the pigment clumps up so bad. Grab Titanium White from Pro-Acryl and don't spend a ton of money on brushes. Get some middle of the line sets that will serve you well.)
@@unphocused thank you, it has been an absolute joy so far there's so much to it.
Oh yeah after painting this one I watched a Duncan Rhodes video on paint thining and he used a brush to get it out, I can't believe I was pouring the stuff it seems like such a no brainer haha.
Ah nice I'll check out titanium thanks
@@TailsandTrails-y5m Easy cheat for a wet palette, buy the refills for one and use a plastic container you can seal. Saves a buncha money.
Army painter wet pallet is a must bro helps so much!
Thanks for the suggestion, a pallet is high on my list so I'll definitely check that one out
Wow bro honestly the improvement is insane great job man way better than my second ever model 😂
Thanks man! I'm really enjoying it 😀
I am really happy to see your progress and your enjoyment of painting. The difference is night and day. I cant wait to see what the third one looks like.
I do have some more advice for you for some of the points and techniques you were using.
- Brushes. Different sized brushes can make a world of difference. You don't need anything fancy, just a medium sized brush and a small detail brush. I'd say pick up another brush the same size as the one you are using, but at a higher quality and a detail brush (size 0, or whatever feels good in the area)
- For the sake of your brushes, I would suggest that you try not to use brushes for the basing paint. It can do damage to the brush and is probably why your brush didn't make a good tip for your detailing work. You can use a toothpick or a tool Games Workshop makes specifically for basing.
- Shading at times, is rough. It sounds counterintuitive, but its okay to cover the parts you are working on with shade as long as you dip the brush in water afterwards and wipe away the smooth surfaces. After that, go back over with the original colour in the parts that would normally see more light.
When you finish all three, I would suggest that you not go back and fix the previous ones for a little while. They will be a great inspiration for you and are a reflection of the great progress you have made. Sorry for the wall of text. I'm just excited to see more.
@@AlmightyTooth hey thank you, I'm loving making progress it's so much fun.
The wall of text is great don't apologise haha
Brushes are top of my list to get, I'm going to pick some up this week. Like you suggested probably just one or two or varying sizes, maybe even steal some of my fiancés old make up brushes, I've seen people use them for base coating so that could be fun to try.
I'm definitely going to go back and touch up number 2 at a later date, I noticed so many parts I missed when I was taking post filming pictures 🫠. I might leave the first one alone as a reminder to how I started, that is until I get sick of the sight of him haha
Glad you're enjoying the videos, I'll think I'm going to do the 3rd marine Thursday so the it should be uploaded this weekend
@@TailsandTrails-y5m There are really a small hand full of miniature painting techniques to learn then you can tackle anything.
- basing
- priming
- highlights
Go out there, and have fun.
Welcome to the addiction.
Looking good mate. Your next practice should be on edge highlighting. If you hit those marines with a light blue highlight, they would absolutely pop.
Awesome job. And it's good that you aren't afraid to try a paint and see what happens (when you used the shadow wash). That's how you get better, but it's what most people are afraid of.
Cheers.😊
@@vintageswiss9096 thanks it's good to be here haha,
I'm actually planning on trying that on my next mini tomorrow! It seems like the natural next step that'll add the most improvement
Oh yeah I'm definitely a kinetic/trial and error learner so I'm more than happy to balls up and learn from it that way
@TailsandTrails-y5m how did the mini go? We need an update!
Oh, and re-watching, I noticed that plastic pallete... make yourself a wet pallete with a paper towel and some baking sheet.
Once you start blending paints, you don't want them to dry up on you, because it's almost impossible to re-mix the exact same color twice.
Edit: and at @2:10 when you forgot the backpack... try to lightly sand the paint off of any pieces that you paint in subassembly (even though you didn't mean to, lol).
Plastic glue only reacts to plastic. If a layer of acrylic is in-between, the pieces may not cure properly and fall off in transport later.
Holy shite... here we go... edit #2: My brother in minis... get rid of that Citadel brush. I am so glad that the starter kit got you into this hobby... but that brush is going to eventually kill your soul. (At @7:30 you can literally see the tip splitting...)
Monument Pro Sable Size 1 is the best "cheap" natural hair brush you can get. Should be like £8...
That 8 quid will save you a lifetime of headaches and it will last you forever if you treat it right and don't use metallic paint with it.
@vintageswiss9096 @vintageswiss9096 it's going well so far! I've just been super busy with work so I'm behind in my painting but it should all be done and uploaded tomorrow!
I'm definitely going to play around with wet pallets next minis
Oh yeah only having the starter brush has felt like a massive restriction, I actually bought a new brush and robbed a make-up brush from my girlfriend for the 3rd mini which was a game changer!
