Your 9th edition guide was really good, but this is a genuine upgrade. While I’m not new to 40k, I will say this is a much better guide video. Well done!
Amazing video. Thank you for not glossing over any techniques and really explaining everything. I tried a couple other miniature painting guides and they just expect you to know too much, you really stripped it down and didn't skip over a single step, cheers friend.
I know what it was like starting out and I just wanted to make a video people could actually use and follow. I want to help people get into the hobby :)
Consider myself a fairly experienced painter but still loved the video. Wish it had been around when I started off many years ago. Am sure it will inspire a whole new generation of model painting artists. Thanks for putting it out there.
Thank you. I wish this was around when I first started as well :P I would definitley be further along as a painter. I really hope it does inspire and help people ^^
Ive just gotten my first war hammer set today. Its the two ones you are painting but a different set. When i finished painting the white one, I knew something was missing, so i watched a bunch of videos. And when i heard you say to water down the most watery thing i have witch was margos purple i decided to give it a go. And my lord it gave new life to it. So thank you very much.
I recently started making my armies and i love it. I bought the starter set and have made my pwn hive fleet and space marine chapter. Love your content and keep it up. 👍 ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Best tutorial vid I've seen, everything's explained concisely without any bloat. Got all the materials listed in the videos and I've been having fun painting, and thanks to the basics you taught me here they're looking pretty awesome! Feel like I can build upon these basics and enjoy the learning process. Thanks dude!
:D thats amazing. I'm glad your enjoying the hobby and I'm super happy you feel confident to go futher and paint other miniatures. good luck on your journey
Nice guide. But even for beginners I recommend and undercoat so the base paints adhere better. Even a cheap can of grey plastic primer from a Halfords in the UK or even pound store black spray paint is fine. Shouldn't blow cost out.
I´ve started playing Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 a few days ago. This really re-sparked my interest in the universe. Thank you so much for the tutorial video, it made it very easy to get an understanding of how and where to start, as a complete beginner (I´ve painted miniatures before, but it´s been 10+ years).
welcome back to the hobby. It seems like its gotten a lot of people interested by the looks of it. I'm not complaining though. More people in the hobby the better :D I'm glad you fond my tutorial and welcome back to the hobby. take your time with it and enjoy it
I love the way you painted the space marine and tyranid easily 10/10 keep up the good work! 👍 I got very happy when you said your genestealer video will been in November as that is my birthday month. 🥳
And just to add to this if we were to drybrush to get a good highlight would we need to do this straight after we apply a maccragge blue base or after we’ve done all the details
I would paint between the armour first so you can clean any mistakes. Then recess shade and drybrush. After this I would do the weapons and the steps in order 👌🏻
This does feel like an excellent introduction to mini-painting. Just got my first models a week ago, looking forward to using this as a guide! Thanks a bunch.
I think it's really nice when eperienced painter gives such valuable lesson for newbies just beginning their adventure. You shown how we can (not perfectly, but quite elegant) paint miniatures from starter set without battery of different paints, but with just paints from starter pack. Thanks!
I got into 40K pretty recently, and just picked up some minis myself. Once my paints arrive, I'm definitely going to enjoy painting them with what you've showed off in your tutorials.
@@TableTopReadyRUclips not sure if you're going to see this comment or not ive ordered the paint set and the introductory set however in the near future im going to order a space marine cpatain and he has skin what citadel pain is suitable for human skin colours and does the paint set box you showed consists of any skin colour or is there any paints i could mix from that set to achieve the colour of a skin

GREAT VIDEO man! thank you! New subscriber! First time : I just bought Death company set and the 40k base paint set, glue and a handling base. Are those colors ok to start painting death company? :D any suggestion? will watch your others video. :D
welcome to the hobby. you should be able to use the paints in this set to paint them. they just black, red and silver pretty much :) just get all your base colours painted and then as you get more comfortable you can try other techniques. whatch my how to better collect and paint warhammer video
Thank you very much for this amazing tutorial! I have just started getting into 40K and bought myself a combat patrol and paint set. This is the such a helpful video for a complete novice like me. I’ve just subscribed 👍
Amazing tutorial! I love how you get into every step and not skip anything.. I watched numerous other tutorials and no one showed how to water down the colors, they just assumed things! I probably would have figured it out on my own but it's annoying when steps are skipped! Love it, thank you!
thank you, I was really proud of this one. I wanted to created a video people could follow along with and get everything they need from it. Its important to help new people into the hobby
thats really upto you, seeing as you have the tools and paint set you could expand to one of the starter sets. I really just wanted to show how a miniature is painted and explain all the ideas and why things are done the way they are. the information can then be continued on to other projects regardless :D
Enjoyed this guide. Is there a shopping list to follow by any chance? I see you've linked firestorm games and the categories which is great, but a list of the items you used would help so I don't have to go back through the video to find out. However it's a great guide and will help me get the painting started now that I've done the building and priming phase.
Im watching this video for like the 20th time still debating If I should pull the trigger and start this hobby 😅 If you could add any paint colors to this set what would it be?
Can I ask a question on the space marine holding the pyro blaster. Can you still use the pyro blaster in game even if its canister is not connected to it? (I'm new)
Thanks for your amazing tutorial ! I started the hobby three months ago, and I learned all the showed technics, but I needed to watch a lot of different videos. It's great to compile all theses in one video, I know what to share for new people starting the hobby 😊 Thank you for your work
I think you could honestly, I would get a pot of Retributor armour and Reikland fleshshade as well, but the rest can be done with what you have in the box. gold armour with a reiklandfleshsahde wash and then you can paint all the other details with the box paints
See once you have done the base undercoats, do you still need to add water to your paints for example when you're going over your miniature once coated to paint on the black?
How do you keep your colours active/wet on your palett? I feel like once once I mixed a colour and used it once, it already dried out by the time i need to reload my brush with it
So if your a new painter you might as well make a wet pallet it can easily be made with a Tupperware I've even used old plastic lunch meat containers cleaned first of course. Then fold like 5 paper towels so they fit in the container then put a peice of parchment paper on top of your paper towels tats also cut to fit. Your paper towel will keep moisture and the parchment with seperate your paint and keep it wet and usable much longer you can always put the lid on and come back tomorrow
it is, but these miniatures are push fit and so you really should assemble them fully. you can watch my getting miniatures ready for painting video to get a better idea of the process
Just a quick question for the community, I am new to the hobby And was just wondering if I should use Balthazar gold or should I go get retributor armour instead ?
wicked. I hope you enjoy doing it. remember this is just an oppertunity to get an idea of what paintings like and getting use to the process. don't worry so much about how they look just take your time and remember your learning :D good luck
this is why I made this video, to give you the information and knowledge so it isn't so over whelming. if you follow what I do in the video with out any expectations and just give it a try then you'll love it. I would reccomend doing an undercoat but if your fllowing this video then its not needed just for 2 miniatures
Only just discovered you mate. This is one of the best beginner tutorials I've seen in years!!! Very informative and the step-by-step is very, very professional. I'm building up British and French Napoleonic armies atm and even though I've been painting miniatures for years it's no bad thing to get back to basics... a mate wants me to try Warhammer and the Ultramarines are my favourites to look at so your tutorial is a huge help! Thanks for this and you have a new subscriber too. Well done!
thank you very much and wlecome to the channel. Its important for me to make content people can actually use and achieve results with, I want more people to enjoy painting miniatures :D I also love making these videos and helping people with their own hobby
Brilliant. I'm already deeply involved in the hobby, but I still enjoyed watching anyway. It reminds me of when I got started with the Age of Sigmar Stormcast Eternals with Paint Set starter box all those years ago when Soul Wars was new. Cheers!
Well one thing I do appreciate with the newer miniatures is that they can be built with limited use of glue. I started off with 4th edition high elves and then moved off the 40K 2nd Edition. The miniatures were far smaller and fully utilized glue to build. Man, when I look at some of my first space marines I wish I knew to thin my paints lol. Cause they are just a lump of blue and yellow paint now that I look back on them.
I just started this hobby like a week ago. Now I have 32 paints [a lot of shades and technical] and my biggest hurdle is accidental touches :( I got myself magnifying glass to help me aim but still I from time to time mess up, which means I have to do yet another QC pass with same colors. After like 15 hours I am still in pre-nuln oil phase of painting about 17 miniatures [adepta sororitas] (as denoted in duncan tutorial). I still have to do QC abaddon black pass after all other passes. It's undending. But so much fun to see the result and the zen feeling doing it!
As long as your enjoying it. That’s important. When you start, it’s going go take a lot of getting use to and learning brush control. The more you do the better we get. Mounting your miniature onto something you can hold like I show in the video will help a lot 😃 but keep practising and you’ll get there. I believe in you 💪🏻 good luck
One of the best tutorials I’ve watched and I’ve watched 20+ I know why you never did layering/contrast because it’s a beginner class but definitely could have with how you explain things so clearly
Got my blue base on after priming with chaos black primer. Nice thin coats, looks like I have kept it smooth. Next is the black detailing. Taking my time, keep coming back to this video for guidance.
Can You make a new one with 10Th edition please :D i already boght the magazine ! But now i there is an introductori set that incluye paint and hobbie tools as well :)
this is a 10th edition tutorial already? if your buying the beginner box then you'll just need get the extra paints seperatly, otherwise the lesson is still the same :) good luck and have fun
@@TableTopReadyRUclips thank You very much !!! And greatings from argentina! I was on the fence in betwen the starter pack, or the paints and the ultimate edition :)
if your getting the ultimat eediton then I would actually start with the paint set and amagazine. learn and try out painting using this video then you can move on to the ultimate edition :)
Okay this is mental. I've never had a good skill in painting, but with this video I was able to paint base colors easly. Good job man, good hob. On to the definition and highlits!
Thank you so much. Your videos have been a great help. My son, daughter and I have both just gotten into the hobby and your videos have taken the apprehension and feeling overwhelmed away. Cheers from Canada.
Thats great. I'm really glad your going to have something to share with your kids :D always remember its the fun and experiance thats important. not how good you are at it. I wish you all the fun times :)
Can you please do a guide on how to paint gems/ lenses, because I don’t know how to do the glowing affect on the eyes and other areas on my space marines.
I do a lot of these smaller details throughout the main tutorials. In different ways so you could choose whats best for you. I'll also continue to cover these in the main videos so you'll always see the most up to date way I like to do them :)
I was always interested in this universe and they finally made me try it out. I first learned about war hammer though the death korps of kreig actually
Im going to be honest and say thank you for this video. I didnt know they made this 2 peice pack and ive wanted to try painting WH but didn't want to buy a $75 to $200 pack just to maybe find out i didnt like it. Super easy to follow you!
@@TableTopReadyRUclips I was just thinking how much worse a mini painted without primer looks and how the paint doesn't stick very good. Just a bad experience for a newcomer, I think anyway.
Painting my very first miniature set now, 10th edition introductory set. This video has given me a lot of confidence that my minis won't look good awful. Thank you for the help. Edit- Is it okay to use normal acrylic paints like for canvas on minis? It may seem like a dumb question but like I said I'm a noob.
awsome, I hope your enjoying the hobby. Personally I would avoid acrylic paints that are specific for miniature painting. They have different consistencies and the pigment strength can be poor, especially for cheaper stuff. There are cheaper alternatives than citedal, for example I'm a bug fan of Vallejo paints and you can use a 'conversion chart' to find the same colours. we spend a lot of money on the miniatures so its worth investing in paint for them. as well when starting out just worry about your base colours and slowly get more paints later when you can
@@TableTopReadyRUclips thank you. I'm 12 hours into painting my first termaguant, still have the black edging for the back and a dry brush highlight. Been taking very slow treating each model as its own art project. Bought some scarlet, gunmetal and silver. Getting a lot of use from mixing the scarlet.
Oh hell yeah an updated video, started recently with this set and ive done the space marine thru the older tutorial so far! I was thinking about what to use as reference for the tyranid, now i can watch this! Also i didn't have blue tac so i used double sided tape, hope that helps someone else!
Please add information next time on how to prepare a miniature before painting. It must be washed so that the paint does not come off. I noticed that no one says a word about it.
Hey there. Long time painter here, this isn't true! Whilst it is on resin models from places like forge world, you are absolutely fine to spray your plastic kits from games workshop straight after building. If you are having trouble with getting your primer to stick, make sure you check out some videos on spraying with a rattlecan, it's not as simple as "spray". Things like temperature, mixing etc. All have an effect. Also, be sure to let your spray can primer "cure", which is not the same as "dry". Let the primer sit on the model overnight, then apply your paint. Know that ultra mat paints like vellejo model colour will very easily rub off no matter what you do due to the resins and binders being far weaker than those found in satin paints like citadel or the new army painter range. You can also seal your miniatures with a few thin coats of Matt varnish when you are done painting to protect the paint should you use a more delicate brand. Hope this helps! :)
@@ukcubing3150 I had this problem a week ago. The paint was just falling off before my eyes. In general, nothing helped until they advised me to wash the miniature and clean it with a toothbrush.
I did this in the previous version off this video and chose not to include it. The reason is that it made no difference. I tested this. I would recommend undercoating them first if your having issues with paint rubbing off. But of course for best practice you can wash them 😊 I just felt it was an unnecessary step for the video
It’s upto you. Varnish isn’t really needed. If you use an undercoat the paint is pretty durable and your not gonna do be doing anything so robust. Varnish can also alter how your miniatures look
this is is great content, thank you so much. Today I bought de magazine with the miniature and the paint set! Please continue a roadmap for beginners every once in a while, thanks!
Thanks for the video, I’ve been thinking about starting for a couple of weeks and I’m actually going shopping tomorrow to buy some form of starter kit so this will be a huge help

@@TableTopReadyRUclips i actually went straight for the starter set and paint and tools kit, almost finished my first space marine today. Your videos are a huge help

mate! welcome to the hobby :D I'm glad the videos has helped you. It is a learning curve, but a very rewarding one. keep painting and practicing and you'll be amazing :) I believe
The white synthetic brushes are just fine for starting out. In fact they often recommend synthetic brushes for beginners until you learn how to use the brush properly and brush control. You don't have to buy GW brushes tho. Even a cheap starter set from an art store or other hobby store is just fine. Then, as you get better, you can upgrade to real sable brushes. And don't buy GW brushes. They're ok but you're paying a premium price for a basic product. They are know to have poor brushes. Look at Raphael or Devinci or Windsor and Newton.
Not at all. The only issue I find with them is that they hook at the tip. But try out different brushes and find which you like best. Everybody is different 😃
Your 9th edition guide was really good, but this is a genuine upgrade. While I’m not new to 40k, I will say this is a much better guide video. Well done!

How do you keep your colours active/wet on your palett? I feel like once once I mixed a colour and used it once, it already dried out by the time i need to reload my brush with it
something i use is a wet pallet. I have one linked in the description of the one I use, its very good.
More videos for absolute beginners! :) Love the content. Sub+
Thank you. I have some ideas
Can’t you just use a grey colored primer that matches the models to undercoat?
you can use an undercoat or primer yes :)
i can't find the starter brush on the website. is the base brush s or layer one the same or as good?
the starter brush only comes in the tool set. its not a great brush anyway. I would go with a medium layer brush if i had to choose
It Is usefull to start painting before the arms are attached to the torso?
it is, but these miniatures are push fit and so you really should assemble them fully. you can watch my getting miniatures ready for painting video to get a better idea of the process
Haha the tongue is out that means deep concentration i do it myself
more streamline painting
Just a quick question for the community, I am new to the hobby And was just wondering if I should use Balthazar gold or should I go get retributor armour instead ?
Retributor armour. Which I wish they had in the paint set rather that baltherzar 👌🏻
@@TableTopReadyRUclips thank you for the feedback and great guide 🙌🏼
Best video I’ve seen for how to start, excited to give it a go now!
thank you. I'm excited for yah :D have fun and enjoy it
This is such a great video thank you so much for the info!
Thank you for the tutorial, I just ordered my introductory set and looking forward to getting to painting.
wicked. I hope you enjoy doing it. remember this is just an oppertunity to get an idea of what paintings like and getting use to the process. don't worry so much about how they look just take your time and remember your learning :D good luck
I really want to get into this but a bit intimidated since I’m not super good with painting. And do you have to use primer before painting?
this is why I made this video, to give you the information and knowledge so it isn't so over whelming. if you follow what I do in the video with out any expectations and just give it a try then you'll love it. I would reccomend doing an undercoat but if your fllowing this video then its not needed just for 2 miniatures
@@TableTopReadyRUclips thank you, I shall give it a shot. They have the exact paint/tool set and a similar 2 minis set at my local hobby store
😊 thank you and as always it's amazing 😊
Thank you 🙏🏻
Only just discovered you mate.
I bought the codecs a year ago and then never started
get started, todays always the best day to start something
Is it normal that they dont have decals?
For this set yes. Usually for most other kits. You will eat transfers.
Brilliant. I'm already deeply involved in the hobby, but I still enjoyed watching anyway. It reminds me of when I got started with the Age of Sigmar Stormcast Eternals with Paint Set starter box all those years ago when Soul Wars was new. Cheers!
Thanks for watching 😁 I’ll hopefully do an AOS version of this tutorial for the up coming edition
Thanks for sharing :)
I cover a lot of different details in other tutorials and I do have a contrast tutorial idea in my head :D
Wao!! you are an artist my brother. I'm still in the assembly process. This video gave my confidence. I will do my best even with shaky hands.
thank you. i'm happy you liked the video. good luck and enjoy it :) our shaky hands get better with time and practice
Thanks for this perfect step-by-step tutorial dude!
I'll try this week-end with my first Space Marine and Tyranid!
I hope you've been enjoying the hobby :) rember to have fun and take your time
Got my blue base on after priming with chaos black primer. Nice thin coats, looks like I have kept it smooth. Next is the black detailing. Taking my time, keep coming back to this video for guidance.
Awesome. Have fun painting 😁
That was My idea :D thanks You !
Please tips for painting salamanders
I have a salamanders tutorial on the channel you can watch :)
Okay this is mental. I've never had a good skill in painting, but with this video I was able to paint base colors easly. Good job man, good hob. On to the definition and highlits!
well done. skill is a result of lots of practice. keep going and you'll have all the skill you need :D
First rate video. Brilliantly filmed and edited. I'm ew to the hobby and you will definitely be my go-to.
welcome to the hobby. I'm glad I've helped you start your journey. good luck and have fun
Welcome to the hobby. The death corps are great 😃
Rust oleum black primer would work for space marines ?
I can't really say, I've never used it or know anyone who has. do your research :D
rust oleum works great to prime
@@tyrant4798 ty !!!
Im going to be honest and say thank you for this video. I didnt know they made this 2 peice pack and ive wanted to try painting WH but didn't want to buy a $75 to $200 pack just to maybe find out i didnt like it. Super easy to follow you!
That’s why I wanted to make this 😃 glad you liked it 🖖🏻
is it a medium dry brush or a small dry brush? You mentioned Medium Dry but the graphic on screen shows an S
I didn’t even realise. A small drybrush would be better 👌🏻
I have a suggestion for the next space marine chapter you could do, the Lamenters!!
I have a list of chapters I want to do, but this won’t be until next year sometime 🤪 need a little break from marines
Primer is always needed. I'd argue a new person needs it more than anyone.
if they want to commit to the hobby then I agree, but not for 2 minitures wanting to try the hobby out. it just ads cost and another thing to learn
@@TableTopReadyRUclips I was just thinking how much worse a mini painted without primer looks and how the paint doesn't stick very good. Just a bad experience for a newcomer, I think anyway.
I am starting with this new hobby and i have to say you did a great tutorial, very usefull. Appreciated the tips. I will keep watching your channel
thank you. welcome to the hobby :D hopefully you can learn more in the future with my content
Fell out of love with painting for a while, but hoping to get back into it soon by trying my first Space Marine. Thank you for the video!
I think we all have that at some point. But I’m glad your making your way back. 😁 good luck
I have just brought this paint set I'm curious what chapters can you print with it
You can paint any chapter that has the colour of any of the paints. You can even make your own 👌🏻
Painting my very first miniature set now, 10th edition introductory set.
That scrapping tool is very good considering it comes with the paint pack, mine is 1.5 years old and still works.
I have so many. I don’t know why they are not more of a thing in scale modelling in general 🤷🏼♂️
@@TableTopReadyRUclips do you prefer them over a hobby knife? I have just been using that
Personally I prefer the back of a hobby knife blade but realistically it's the same concept so either way works.
@@JamesDM_ Excellent, thanks
My preferred tool is a needle file, but I actually use all 3.
Knowlegde is power and watching you is knowlegde!!!
I have the power 💪🏻
Oh hell yeah an updated video, started recently with this set and ive done the space marine thru the older tutorial so far! I was thinking about what to use as reference for the tyranid, now i can watch this!
Also i didn't have blue tac so i used double sided tape, hope that helps someone else!
Double sided tape is a great idea. I just struggle to peel off the other side of the tape haha good look with the tyranid 💪🏻
my kit didnt have the minis🥲
oh no. with the magazine? you need to talk to who ever you got it from
Please add information next time on how to prepare a miniature before painting. It must be washed so that the paint does not come off. I noticed that no one says a word about it.
Yeah!!
I’ve never washed a spru yet and never had a problem.
I did this in the previous version off this video and chose not to include it. The reason is that it made no difference. I tested this. I would recommend undercoating them first if your having issues with paint rubbing off. But of course for best practice you can wash them 😊 I just felt it was an unnecessary step for the video
I am new to WH40k and i think you just sold me on starting....
welcome to the hobby :D I'm excited for yah. theres no rush and just enjoy it
Do you use varnish after finishing painting the miniatures or is there no need?
It’s upto you. Varnish isn’t really needed. If you use an undercoat the paint is pretty durable and your not gonna do be doing anything so robust. Varnish can also alter how your miniatures look
this is is great content, thank you so much. Today I bought de magazine with the miniature and the paint set! Please continue a roadmap for beginners every once in a while, thanks!
wicked. I hope you enjoy painting. make sure to take your and enjoy it. I'll definitely be doing more beginner stuff in the future
nice, thanks!@@TableTopReadyRUclips
Thanks for the video, I’ve been thinking about starting for a couple of weeks and I’m actually going shopping tomorrow to buy some form of starter kit so this will be a huge help
Glad you liked the video. Welcome to the hobby 😁 this is a great place to start and get use to painting. You then have the paint set and can easily get one of the other starter sets 💪🏻 and apply the same steps
@@TableTopReadyRUclips i actually went straight for the starter set and paint and tools kit, almost finished my first space marine today. Your videos are a huge help
Nothing better than making do with what you have
👌🏻 exactly. No need to be fancy
Great video brother! I followed it step by step to begin my "painting miniatures" journey. There is definitely a learning curve to the hobby and you make it easy and simple. Keep making these type videos for new and intermediate hobbyists!
mate! welcome to the hobby :D I'm glad the videos has helped you. It is a learning curve, but a very rewarding one. keep painting and practicing and you'll be amazing :) I believe
Sweet.. never knew that bit about the shield icon
I’m glad included it then 😁
Goddamn, bro got us covered. tyvm
💪🏻 always
Ordered the middle starter set. Super excited and terrified 😂
awsome, I hope you enjoy building and painting it :D take your time and have fun. expect to not be very good to start with
Hi. love your beginner tutorial 😊👍🏻. Is there any difference if i use a synthetic brush? (the white ones)
@@kharbury great!!! really appreciate your reply 😊❤️
Not at all. The only issue I find with them is that they hook at the tip. But try out different brushes and find which you like best. Everybody is different 😃
