The RTX 3070 Vs GTX 1080 Ti - Should 1080p Gamers Upgrade?

  • After checking the Nvidia site every day for about a week I was lucky enough to catch the elusive RTX 3070 in stock. I bought one because I had planned to upgrade in a few months, but who knows when they'll be in stock again?
    I therefore decided to compare this card with my good ol' GTX 1080 Ti on my current 1080p monitor to see how much of a difference there is at this resolution, all while using my mid range Intel Core i5 10400F Processor.
    Thanks for watching :)

    As a EVGA FTW 3 1080Ti user, I’m glad you made a comparison, only thing is that I have a 2560x1440 monitor at 165Hz. It puts on perspective that for me a upgrade would be nice, including since I use a second monitor, but I’ll wait till the next generation again. I’ll just lower the resolution down to 1080 on my gaming monitor so I can get a bit more frames since this card is still a beast and strong after all these years. Glad I bought this 1080Ti years ago when it came out, and thank you for the quick, useful review and perspective as a 1080Ti user.

      If one is used to 60 or 75Hz, upgrading to a high refresh monitor has its own issues, namely one's vision system gets retrained so that lesser refresh rates are no longer tolerable. Someone who's already switched won't be able to understand this, but if one is content with 60/75Hz (locked I mean) then upgrading to a high refresh monitor is not necessarily sensible. Many will claim it helps for competitive fps, but there's no objective data for that beyond those who play such things constantly anyway (ie. they're likely better because they play more, not because of the monitor). And btw, his other half picked the 1080 Ti, check the old video. :)

      I just upgraded from a GTX 1060 to a 1080Ti and I'm very happy. The thing is at 1080p you'd need a 10th gen Intel clocked to 5GHz or a new Ryzen 5000-series to get even close to reaching the full potential of the 1080Ti and that is kinda amazing thinking that the card is a few years old.
      I'm running mine with a Ryzen 2600X and I'm bottlenecking the card pretty hard. Still getting nice frames but it's nice to know that I can just slap a new Ryzen 5600X in my system and there's plenty of performance headroom left in the GPU department.

That i5 is already bottlenecking the 1080Ti a bit (would be more noticeable on Modern Warfare or Far Cry 5 for example), but the bottleneck on the 3070 is quite relevant. If somebody has a CPU of that level I don't think it's worth upgrading. I had a strix 1080Ti paired with a 10700k that I bought a few months ago for 330 bucks. On 1080p the performance was still great, I'm upgrading the GPU just because I can sell it for almost the price of a new one, both amd or nvidia, so I would feel dumb not doing it

      @Leo-ud9cn 3 года назад

      @@briank3754 that's not really what I meant, I was just saying that the performance could be a lot better with a cpu that's at the gpu's level. The CPU is not that bad, so since upgrading a CPU means that you need to change both your motherboard and your RAM too, the amount of money needed is around 700 dollars. A 3070 is available for 500 and you will get a bigger performance increase, so it makes sense. I've a 1080p 240hz monitor and the 3070 would not be enough to enjoy them all. When there's gonna be some stock, I'm gonna go for an ultrawide 2K 144Hz paired with a 6800XT. 60Hz are not for me, no matter what. I'll be upgrading. I picked up a lovely 1440p 165 Hz monitor but my mobile 1070 just can't push all those pixels with higher graphics settings. The 3070 is tempting, but I might try waiting for a potential 3070 super if I'm patient enough

    Nice overview. I won't be upgrading anytime soon, it's too expensive to do so and my GTX 960 in my desktop (or built in 1050Ti on my laptop) are still decent enough for what I need. Though some games are limited to 30FPS and not 60FPS.

    I can stream with my 1080ti at 1440p & get fantastic service from it. I wanted a 30series but with no stock I’m in no panic!
    If I do get an upgrade it will be when ever & a 3080ti or a 40series depending on how long it takes for them to come out

      Make a custom resolution in your radeon settings with the refresh rate at around 75 fps and the go to gpu driver properties and change the refresh rate to the new made framerate, then hit OK not apply. If your monitor Doesnt show anything wait 20 secs and try again with a lower refreshrate. If it worked hit apply and congrats u now have a overclocked monitor😎😎😎
