I'm letting my PSN subscription expire in August, myself. None of these services or modern games really have my interest anymore. There are enough fun games on SNES/PS1/etc to keep me entertained for a lifetime, and I'm not subjected to the multitude of issues with modern gaming.

    • @WolfyRagnarok

@LuFlame-os3bd I certainly advocate for people to spend their money as they see fit, and if you're having an enjoyable time on PC then good on you. For myself, I can't see that fixing things I feel are problems. Online-only, mtx-ridden, bug-infested games seem far too common these days, along with not actually owning your games, games being permanently in "early access" phases, spyware, and many other issues have simply driven me away from it all.
I bought a copy of Secret of Evermore (SNES) last week, and I'm having a wonderful time playing through it again.

Remember when we were all outraged that XBox Live had a yearly fee at all? Because PC games were already online for free? Hey remember how Sony had that as a big selling point, that their PSN was completely free on PS3 while 360 kept charging? Remember how upset people got when the PS4 had Sony decide to copy Microsoft because hey the 360 was selling pretty well with that fee in place. Yeah, and you know how, in point of fact, online play on the PS3 is STILL free to this day? And also, outside of MMOs, PC games ALSO don't require a yearly fee to work online?
It's almost as if the costs of hosting online services DON'T require that yearly fee and it was always just a way to scrape a little more off the top. Keep that in mind now that they're increasing the cost of basic online play along with their Gamepass service that many subscribers don't want to pay for just to play the games they bought outright online.

@@AutismIsUnstoppable If you're talking about party chat, no, that's not "why it was free". That's a simple backend matter to be solved in code. As evidence this isn't why it was free, the XBox 360 didn't party chat for a good long time, but it was charging that fee from the start. From Software's Chromehounds even had a unique mechanic that required a unit with an antenna array to be in range to enable voice chat, and you could get an advantage by destroying the enemy's communication unit. From Software simply killed off their online functionality in the game when MS brought in Party Chat, because it completely destroyed the balance of the game.
Don't make up excuses for these fees. We don't need to rush to corporate defense.

Gamepass is fantastic value for a specific type of consumer. The issue is that their hubris has lead them to believe that it's the defacto be-all-end-all of choices.
A lot of customers only play the same handful of games and for these, there's no value in Gamepass.
Gamepass is more value to the sorts of people who spend most of their free time gaming and want access to a lot of games, which they can beat and move onto the next. While I'll definitely keep my account and I may come back years down the road, I'm just as happy to meet my friends on cross-play right now.
Xbox wants to charge me more for hosting a server where they sell copies of software that they can technically sell for the next 70+ years for profit. Its for all the games from Activision and Blizzard and maybe get more games from 3rd party devs to Game Pass..
They paid about $1B for 3rd party games 2023..
Maybe they aim to get more, bigger games on Game Pass day 1.

Just a thought, but I'm more inclined to buy a game once the various patches and updates/DLC are completed.
Maybe selling a physical edition at the end of the run that requires no downloads or internet connection to just play?

  • @First_Chapter

Had Gamepass purely because one game that was purely multiplayer (Destiny 2) demanded it to even fire-up the game. Quitting Destiny 2 removed that need. Subscriptions are a bad thing. Circumstances change. If playing a game relies on being able to afford a monthly fee for the game and a monthly fee for broadband, because it connects to servers, then the game is gone and unplayable if times are hard financially and those payments have to stop. A physical game, whether that's a hardware cartridge for an old console or a disk for a PC, that plays entirely offline is a different story. So, for me, the rule is "no subscriptions".
