Well, having just seen Deadpool and Wolverine I was amazed. Its a good film, it did not disappoint me in any way. I saw no real shortcomings. It had two superb characters, played very well by great actors. It was violent, it was funny and it rightly took the p**s out of the mess of Marvel and its woke girl boss failures. IT had two straight white male leads, making fun of all the gay tropes, it had a woman as the flawed villain and did I mention it was funny? I have not laughed so hard at a super hero film since Tony Stark quipped his way through his appearances. The other thing for me is it reminded me of old school male heroes, the sort you could look up to as kid, and be partly scared of what they would do....people like Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne etc...And its taken a lot of money. A LOT. And its continuing to do so, through word of mouth, people are going to see it more than once, which is truly fantastic. So if nothing else it will prove that male leads are still the mass appeal, get it right and you make bank and others will look at the film and want to have the same success....this should help shift opinion in Hollywood, even if they dont agree with it behind the scenes, giving people what they want makes money....

My advice to executives that wish to move away from THE MESSAGE: don’t do it quietly. Fire these people loudly and publicly. You will gain favor from fans and you will probably recover quicker.
Look at it from their viewpoint. US and to some degree world culture has become politically polarized. Some at the top thought they could thrive economically by catering to the activists on one side of the divide, who claimed to hold the keys to audiences of The Future, on The Right Side of History. But they found out that it was a niche market, and that politically neutral pictures - released from needing to promote The Message - can gain a broader market than catering to either side would. (Not to mention that making the story subservient to The Message made for bad content). One of the things that companies are learning is that taking a stand on culture war issues alienates one side, MORE strongly than it bring in on the other side. Bud Light gained very few new drinkers while losing a lot of long time customers. Then if they try to appease either side, it p*sses off the other even more. It became a lose/lose situation for them. For the studios, publicly and loudly firing their activists would have created a backlash from a sizeable segment of society (centered within the elites, like film critics), creating a perception that they intended to cater to the other side ("oh, no, they've gone over to the dark side"). It would have again pushed away more people than it gained. That's the kind of self-goal they are learning to avoid. They found out that catering back and forth is worse than just stopping entirely. So they want to quietly change, without needlessly inflaming either side. Just put out a product, stop trying to appeal to either side at the expense of the other. The successes that Drinker mentions suggest that more politically neutral movies are already doing better financially. Comments here, however, suggest that it could take a while before the most alienated former fans trust the film studios again - if every. And some of the loyalty from historic franchises is probably lost forever as Drinker says; they burned folks who have moved on, without as many new people becoming solid fans of the IP to replace them. Still, I hope Drinker is right. Movies harping on The Message were getting so boring. Back to good story telling, I hope.

I was involved in a great non-profit which got deeply into the ideology, and I'm not sure they will ever recover. But they do not think they ARE being political, they see it as just doing the right thing morally; they conceive "being political" as something like officially endorsing a candidate. And I suspect that some companies were sold a similar line, thinking they would get far more praise than criticism by "doing the right thing" - and discovering that not everybody agrees that it IS the right thing, and that it involves a political controversy which is not going away.

Exactly this.
@@zephsmith3499 Yes it’s a lose/lose situation, but they themselves got themselves into that spot by deciding to get political, therefore it’s their own fault.

@@mcadventurer1533 Agreed. My hope is that for every company that gets itself into that pickle, there are many others watching and deciding to quietly back pedal before they get in the limelight themselves (or not move towards political stances they were considering).

AMEN brother!!
Are you kidding. The 80's are the origin of the problem. The 70's were the golden age of culture, as the creatives in every medium not only experimented wildly and blazed a million new trails, but also managed to make good money while doing it. The 80's was when all those people were eaten piecemeal by the big money men, their works streamlined and dumbed down for maximum mass appeal. There was no message back then, just straight money making, but it was this establishment of total corporate dominance that eventually enabled the message to take hold, and might enable something much worse still in the future. As soon as the main goal of creative endeavours becomes profitability instead of self-expression, the culture gets cancer.

I don't know about that, as far as DEI politics being shoved up every orifice, anyway.
