The idea of the Doctor's name being Basil (he doesn't even add the Disco part in that scene) has always felt so unique and personal that I haven't been entirely sure to this day if he was actually joking. Especially with Osgood giving her genuine first name (as far as we know). It just felt like one of those quiet moments where you're with someone you trust and you're like, "Oh what the hell, here you go."
Basil with a brother called Irvin Braxiatel - so, IF the Doctor has ever been a little girl, being raised on earth (maybe) the name might have been turned around as Lisa Braxiatel ... keeping only your personal name, turn it around 180 degrees to fit the changed condition from girl to boy, he just kept the first letter of the familyname to remind himself of his lost past: B.asiL, might also mean "Be Asyl", the Time Lords giving sanctuary to a lost child from any other dimension imaginable... If you started out as an energy-pattern consiting of bright light, how would you call yourself? Probably not something, that includes sound-patterns!
Actually the equation originates from the original The Making of Doctor Who book by Terrance Dicks (the one with Jon Pertwee and a Sea Devil on it), and is taken from the records of the Time Lords detailing his adventures, trial, and his exile to Earth.
Missy did say that the Doctor's real name is Doctor Who. This is a reference to the fact that in the classic era of the series the character was actually credited as "Dr. Who" It wasn't till much later that they changed it to "The Doctor" in the show's credits. And Missy even mentioned that he later dropped the Who and she specifically mentioned the exact time period that the name did change in the show's credits. But I still don't think it's actually his original name because Missy is a liar and the Doctor literally says that he chose that name for himself. But it doesn't matter what his original name is because the name he chose is his real name.
When Tom Baker was first shown a photo of Ncuti Gatwa, he said “Oh! Is this the new Doctor Who?!” Not “Doctor”. Insisting he call him that, the Doctor corrected him 3 times to calling him the Doctor. It wasn't brought up again by Drax once the Doctor looked like he was going to beat it into him.
I think the Doctor's theme is the way it sounds to us when pronounced in Gallifreyan- it was playing when River whispered it to 10 and The Devil's Chord implies the Doctor can hear the music of the episodes in his head. If this was what he was hearing in that moment...🤓 I rest my case.
Apparently an old extended universe comic "Lungbarrow" has his name as Christodavoreen something or other...my HC is Theta Sigma is somehow a nickname in some Gallifreyan dialect or creole or slang; Christopher is also a way to translate it as the closest English equivalent. Tell your friend his name is Christopher ^^
The Doctor is a title, Galifrey uses titles for names. The Doctor's true name was a mathematical formula: ∂³Σx² or d32x2, which should be pronounce "Delta Cubed Sigma X Squared" in english. Theta Sigma (The Doctor's academy nickname) and the last five being pronounced (assuming i translated correctly Phi Tau Gamma Delta Zeta. 1. ∑x2 represents the sum of x squared terms. In this case, it would be x^2 + x^2 + x^2 + ... up to some number of terms. 2. Taking the third derivative of the sum of x squared terms can be a bit complicated, but let's simplify it by starting with the first derivative: - First derivative: d/dx (x^2) = 2x - Second derivative: d^2/dx^2 (x^2) = d/dx (2x) = 2 - Third derivative: d^3/dx^3 (x^2) = d^2/dx^2 (2) = 0 Since all higher-order derivatives of x^2 are 0, the third derivative of the sum of x squared terms will also be 0. Therefore, the mathematical expression "d3∑x2" simplifies to 0. So the name is zero, unless the sum is the name like on the link below ruclips.net/user/shortsiXSqZJl99lg?si=89sUJIgBRn3VW8m0 P.s I used AI for this so if its wrong blame that lol.

Seriously though that was later proven to be a name he went by in College and not his actual name, if i remember correctly. He even says it in new who ' I go by many names but never the real one . My name spoken aloud willl end the universe. ' or something like that. Allegedly a companion read a book with his name in it in TARDIS library and then promptly forgot it. River allegedly whispers it to his TARDIS grave but we dont know what she actually whispers. He claims she alone knows his name but he acknowledged that he lies and his name can never be spoken. Its a mystery to be sure.
@@ThoughtCabin the crack in time never actually closed did it? Either way his name spoken aloud is the key to unlocking the pocket universe that Gallifrey is locked in. If the time lords ever escape, they will destroy the universe and ascend into a new form of life.
@Davrotu_72_Oklahoma_USA Yes, it closed, shortly after the time lords granted the new regeneration cycle. The Silence Will Fall issue is completely resolved and there are no universe-ending consequences to speaking the name anymore.
The comic is a colourized U.S. reprint of the early black and white Doctor Who Weekly comic strips. The Doctor's "name" that they quote is from the Time Lords' indictment of charges against the Doctor from the 1972 edition of The Making of Doctor Who by Terrance Dicks and Malcolm Hulke. These symbols also appear on the pillar with "Old High Gallifreyan" inscriptions inside Rassilon's tomb in The Five Doctors.
(You migt already know this but…) Fun Fact: In the credits of classic who, the Doctor was credited as “Doctor Who”, but that was fixed in the 7th Doctor era (I think), but when the show was revived, the 9th Doctor was credited as “Doctor Who” again 😂
Well technically even the doctor doesn't know cause of the stupid Timeless child the name he thinks it is is only the name the time lords gave him, his "real one" is from the place is unfortunately really from. Another thing the timeless rubbish ruined
Doesn’t ruin it at all, and the Doctor being an adoptee and foundling not from Gallifrey doesn’t ruin the mystery built around the Doctor’s Gallifreyan name, because it is still their real name. As the Doctor would’ve spoken another language, and Tecteun wouldn’t have understood them, she would’ve given them a new name after she adopted them, and whatever Gallifreyan name she chose for the Doctor would’ve been what they were called and what they called themselves. Just because their Gallifreyan name wasn’t the name given to them at birth, doesn’t mean it’s not their real name. Adopted identities are real.
Interesting tidbit, I was recently watching Keys of Marinus, and in one of the episode Ian finds a key in a jar that has a scientific formula very much like this "name" of the Doctor.
Whatever name the Doctor had in the house of Lungbarrow can't be his real name, given the mystery of the Timeless Child. If I had to guess, the Doctor's birth name might be Docere, if only because of "doctor"'s etymology, so as a name it'd mean "before the doctor"
ok, so playing w the "the doctors name is the theme song" idea. when Meastro (from devil's chord) is ready to take on the Doctor, they play the theme song to initiate the story... are they SUMMONING THE DOCTOR by saying/playing/sounding their name? [Great video, love your content, keep it up!]

this was known 40 years ago.. if you think this is a big reveal you are sorely mistaken.. it still doesnt reveal his name though its a mathmatical symbol for his collage nick name not his real name.
I was convinced for a while (until 12 gave his departure monologue) that the Doctor's real name could definitely have been Lucifer. For one, his name is a secret. Why would his name be a secret unless it would completely change all of his relationships? For another, the Doctor seems genuinely concerned in front of human companions when his name is threatened to be revealed. If they wouldn't understand it anyway, then why would he be worried? It's something that can be read, since Clara read it in a book. And it's pronounceable, since River Song said it to 10. The only name I can think of that checks all of those boxes is a name like Lucifer. It;s pronounceable, readable, and it makes sense why this name would be understood by human companions and why its revelation would probably change his relationships with his human companions. But then 12 had to go all "You can't pronounce it" and now it's even more of a mystery.
His name is Pete, or Pete of Sigma. ... at least that's how I heard it on a grainy TV signal back in the 80s, watching "The Armageddon Factor" (where he was actually called "Thete" or "Theta Sigma"). But I hold that the Doctor's name is "Pete". On a planet of Borusas and Romanas and Rassilons, what could be worse than going through life as "Pete"? No wonder he calls himself The Doctor. Additionally, according to one of the novels, he belongs to the House of Lungbarrow, which would make his full name "Pete Lungbarrow".
D cubed x squared in physics terms. After all, he is a scientist, and I think it means the cubed at the centre of the dimensions, = d for dimensions, cubed as in Tardis and square mean centre that wnd symbols is a sigma notation.
Theta Sigma (ΘΣ) is given as the Doctor's name in TV: The Armageddon Factor. This is retconned to be the Doctor's "nickname at college" Sigma male meaning Commonly regarded as the "rarest" type of male, a sigma male is typically denoted as an archetype of a male who is similar to the alpha male. Unlike an alpha male, Sigma males are more introverted and seek to dominate themselves, in other words "self-mastery". On social media, the term is often used to describe the idolization of masculine characters from films and TV shows, or celebrities .
Many years ago I read an interview with Tom Baker from the late 70s where he says the Doctor's full name is Unjulakatulavistulahithithazitze but when he tells it to people they reply with "Doctor who?" and he eventually decided "oh, never mind, that'll do". Possibly he was not being serious. Personally I suspect "d³∑x₂" is pronounced Throat Wobbler Mangrove.
Spock's name is never revealed either. "You would find it unpronounceable". The Doctor's name should NEVER be revealed. It's the last bit of mystery surrounding the character. Also whatever the name, it would be a huge anticlimax after 60+ years
He is called theta sigma... Those symbols are in old high galifreyan and appear in the tomb of rassilon in the death zone of Galifrey... But theta sigma is also a nickname, so guess mystery still not solved. River song has the answer but she took it to her virtual reality grave.

In the zigon inversion and invasion i think he told osgood his name was basil disco phd
Very good you get a gold star. Nobody ever mentions this . Her name is Patrinella, and they both agree to not ever mention it.
I love Basil
@@karldearstyne5595god i love osgood
I thought that was funny, as people always told me off for referring to the character as Doctor Who when I was a kid, and here’s one of the most iconic actors who played him doing the same.
@@CarysCreatesThings There are lots of Doctors - David Tennant is now a REAL Doctor of Drama h.c. My social security number is NOT my real name, but it stays the same, regardless how often I might change the surname through marriage or other "events" in my life. Where I live, Doctor is part of your name, as soon as you rightfully achieved this title. David Tennant insisted on being listed as "the Doctor" in the credits, while the 9th, Christopher Ecclestone, is still rolling with "Doctor Who" (like 1st, 2nd, 3rd part of 4th & 9th) ... remember Missy introducing herself: "Hello, I am Doctor Who...", 12th rushes out of the TARDIS: "I am (the REAL) Doctor Who!"
it genuinely looks like part of a soundwave function, which could mean that his name is literally the melody, with melody A being his first name, and Melody B being his last name
During the Armageddon Factor the Doctor met up with an old school chum named Drax. Drax called him Thete short for Theta Sigma. Insisting he call him that, the Doctor corrected him 3 times to calling him the Doctor. It wasn't brought up again by Drax once the Doctor looked like he was going to beat it into him.
ΘΣ was his Academy nickname.
The Seventh Doctor explicitly says so in Happiness Patrol
I think the Doctor's theme is the way it sounds to us when pronounced in Gallifreyan- it was playing when River whispered it to 10 and The Devil's Chord implies the Doctor can hear the music of the episodes in his head. If this was what he was hearing in that moment...🤓 I rest my case.
i think it was clara who said “is there music in your head when you say these things?”
its funny to me that your friend thought not knowing the characters name was more silly then doctor who being his name

When I was a kid the empty child and the people from the waters of mars gave me nightmares for weeks
Me humming a theme:

Me Nah, The Simpsons, i didn't call you sorry.
I have always insisted that Chrístõdavõreendiamondhærtmallõupdracœfiredelúnmiancuimhne de Lœngbærrowis his "birth" name and nothing will ever change that.
But that it ultimately it doesn't matter. He left that name behind and became The Doctor. That's the only name that matters. He is THE DOCTOR. Trying to use his "birth" name is equivilent to Dead Naming and Ive been told that's bad.
It is quite common for adoptees not to know their real names.
The name given to him on Gallifrey would most likely be in Gallifreyan, surely.😃
I love how I waited the entire video and realized you literally put it in the thumbnail. That’s actually hilarious 😂

Expanding on your Doctor Who theme idea, what if the Doctor's name is a play on the two creators of the Doctor Who theme song? (Ron Derbyshire)
Plausible, after all John Smith’s parents from Human Nature/Family of Blood were named Verity and Sydney in reference to Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert!
I hope you mention the time RTD joked about the real name in Confidential, and I hope it was Brendan like in that flashback from The Division
His name is Dalia Ron or Dr for short

1. ∑x2 represents the sum of x squared terms. In this case, it would be x^2 + x^2 + x^2 + ... up to some number of terms.
2. Taking the third derivative of the sum of x squared terms can be a bit complicated, but let's simplify it by starting with the first derivative:
- First derivative: d/dx (x^2) = 2x
- Second derivative: d^2/dx^2 (x^2) = d/dx (2x) = 2
- Third derivative: d^3/dx^3 (x^2) = d^2/dx^2 (2) = 0
Since all higher-order derivatives of x^2 are 0, the third derivative of the sum of x squared terms will also be 0. Therefore, the mathematical expression "d3∑x2" simplifies to 0. So the name is zero, unless the sum is the name like on the link below

But HE did get awarded for his fjord-designs. Douglas Adams invented that old landscaper's name purly to annoy the secretary who hat to type out all of his scripts (pre-PC)
And happy Towl Day to everyone: "Don't Panic" would make a great imprint on any piece of cloth!
Lol my dad's name was actually John Smith.
His name spoken aloud ending the universe stopped being a concern after the crack closed in Time of the Doctor
Everyone knows his name shows up in his browser history. He had to google himself....
The John Smith alias was developed during the second doctor story The Wheel in Space when Jamie reads it off of a company logo.
Whenever i search my name online its just some old irish guy who made like a fast food thing
That name originated from Terrance Dicks' first edition of "The Making of Doctor Who" (with Pertwee & Sea Devil on the cover).
And on that cliff at the very old planet, where River song wrote him a message - HELLO SWEETIE (Theta Sigma and 5 other symbols)!
(You migt already know this but…) Fun Fact: In the credits of classic who, the Doctor was credited as “Doctor Who”, but that was fixed in the 7th Doctor era (I think), but when the show was revived, the 9th Doctor was credited as “Doctor Who” again 😂
So was Prince another version of this time lord before even Peter Calpaldi?
I have my own headcanon as to what The Doctor's real name is and I'm not telling anyone.
I am a John Smith truther. I think the Doctor's name is the Gallifreyan equivalent of John Smith 😂
I mean, just looking at it, it looks like Dexter

Well then again, The Doctor lies 😂
Lucifer literally means "carrier of light" or "bringer of light".
He was an angel who was expelled from Heaven according to the apocryphal bible story
I read that it’s pronounced ‘Theta Sigma’. I saw it a while ago and assumed it was a joke about Elon Musk’s kid’s name at first.

Ah yes, d cubed sigma x squared
Those mathematical symptoms translate to....drum roll....Dr Who!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Theta Sigma (ΘΣ) is given as the Doctor's name in TV: The Armageddon Factor. This is retconned to be the Doctor's "nickname at college" Sigma male meaning
Commonly regarded as the "rarest" type of male, a sigma male is typically denoted as an archetype of a male who is similar to the alpha male.
