I just can’t wrap my mind around the whole “it’s unfair to Ncuti Gatwa” thing. In my opinion, they handled it in the best way possible. They announced him BEFORE the confirmation of Tennant as Fourteen. I’d actually find it *more* disrespectful if they had Jodie regenerate into Ncuti… only for Ncuti’s debut episode to be an anniversary one where he’s now overshadowed by other Doctors. They did it the right way.
I think it was a stroke of genius to announce Ncuti Gatwa before David Tennant. That assured us that no matter what, we were getting a brand new Doctor. We were just getting David Tennant back for a bit as well.
It was also genius because when Jodie regenerated, we expected Ncuti. It was the first time in the history of the show that a regeneration has actually been a surprise (except maybe the first one, and the kind of fake out one in the Stolen Earth).
@captainamerica3067 Yeah, we knew he was coming back, just like we knew he was coming back for the 50th. Doctors have reprised their roles throughout the history of the show. What we didn't know was that he was going to be a new incarnation. Rumours had existed, sure, but that's nothing new, so I never listen to them.
Honestly, acting as yourself is actually really hard, being able to inject enough authenticity from your own personality without it becoming just you over the role is super hard, and the people who pull it off like Baker or Tennant are generally incredibly talented and well trained.
As a classically trained actor in a former life I can cosign on this. Vulnerability is the name of the game and if you can convey that AND truthfully come off as your authentic self you are on the top of your game!
@@deadpooldan9862 yeah he's probably a good case for where it can fail, the people who get it right, you don't think of them as being them with another name, they tend to be the ones where if you think if the character you think of them. It's what makes it so hard, you have to have the confidence and skill to be yourself keep that line where you replace the character you're portraying. Another great example is RDJ, who brought his real life struggling with addiction into both his performance as Stark and Holmes.
I love that David is back, but with his replacement already in the wings. It would feel regressive if it was for longer than a few specials. The show feels in safe hands.
@@JRCSalter No offence, but I really hope not. There's endless possibility for Ten, already. I'm hoping there's a complete arc for him as Fourteen without jamming more in.
I disagree completely and I could not be more pissed off that he’s not gonna get an entire season like this. All excitement that I previously had to see the 15th doctor is completely gone, i dont care at all anymore about ncuti, because all I care about is David Tennant getting a satisfactory end to HIS story as the doctor
@@Futurebound_jpg I've seen a couple of your comments on this video and it appears to me that your complaints are completely contrary to the entire ethos of the show. Dr who is about change, about moving forward. It can refer to previous times as though experiencing a memory but they should not be held onto for too long. We cannot relive the past. And hey, it's RTD. Who's to say he can't whip up a satisfactory ending in 3 episodes?
This was great! As an American Who fan, I also hope Disney's involvement doesn't Americanize the show. But honestly, with RTD at the helm, I'm not really worried. Just super pumped for Tennant to return and to see Ncuti take on the role. I'm feeling very optimistic and am glad so many veteran's to the show are back to help.
I will never understand dislike for Peter Capadli era. He is easily the best actor in the new Who and he has most interesting episodes imho. Also Jodie is such a great actress and it's sad that her series were not as good.
I must say, both of them worked super well with what they were given- especially Jodie. If she had a better writer, I think her stuff would be excellent.
People may dislike the Capaldi era, but no one faults Capaldi for it. The consensus seems to be that Capaldi as an actor is clearly in that growing set of actors that were perfectly cast for a role and then let down by the screenplays, or showrunners in control during their time in that role ( best example being Affleck Batman ). It's a shame too.
I can't remember name of episode but Peter had by far one of best episodes in who , or a episode of any show where there was only one actor for entire story
The Disney + deal only makes me nervous in so much as the possibility of Disney gaining more ownership with time. With that said, everything else has me hyped! It feels good to be a Doctor Who fan again 😊
The one thing I don't like about Tennant coming back is that his clothes regenerated with him. Would have been very funny to see him in 13's clothes and trying to remember what he wore last time he wore Tennant's face.
I agree! That's the only thing that's kind of rubbed me the wrong way. It felt kind of disrespectful to Jodis doctor too, like Russel thought those clothes were silly or beneath Tennant
@@adairs7498 yeah exactly, and by the looks of the clip of ncuti, he doesn't get 13's clothes back when he stops being tennant so there's not even a reason for it.
Russell stated in an interview why they decided not to do that. Basically, one, Jodie is a lot shorter and smaller than David and making her clothes fit him would not have worked well and second Russell was afraid that it would be criticized as drag or mocking drag and he wanted to stay far away from that bed of snakes
I actually was more compelled by Ecclestons Doctor and imo he was overshadowed by Tennant and Smith. He started the more human aspect of the doctor but also knew when he had to throw down. He nailed the look of a lonely grizzled but also very hopeful and optimistic doctor
Yo Crispy, Old Whovian here. Loved your magic and enthusiasm for the up and coming 60th. Personally, I've never been so excited for Doctor Who since...... 1963! After really enjoying "An Unearthy Child" my father and I sat and waited for the second ever episode. Only to find out that the BBC would repeat the 1st episode again for a 2nd time. But they realized, in their wisdom that viewing figures for Ep 1 would be low, due to the sad news that shocked the world, that JFK had been assassinated 2 days before the 1st episode was aired. So as a 10 year old boy, the lifelong addiction was hatched. Now, 60 years later and here we still are. Get behind me naysayers. The Doctor is for life...... Be EXCITED, be VERY EXCITED!!!
OK folks, let's put the past behind us. And get EXCITED! about what lies ahead. I know we're all gonna enjoy the Christmas offering. Soak it up, enjoy, 'cos reading between the lines, it looks like we'll have a wee wait as it seems the next series, season will air, early summer, May time maybe?, I reckon, so let's just enjoy what we got to look forward to. Trust the RTD2 era. In the meantime. Hava wonderful festive holiday Crispy in the Ozzy summer as we freeze our goolies off in the northern hemisphere. One Love all the way Tx
David Tennant and Tom Baker are the essence of Doctor Who! Both are the only Doctor's that regeneratated into the same faces with the 14th and The Curator Infact, in the novels and other medias, The Doctor regenerates into Tom Baker many times in the later versions. The 30th Doctor, etc...
I feel in your 'Fall of Doctor Who' section at the start you are very unfair on Moffat era Who and on Smith and Capaldi, and pretty much just dismiss the entire era with an offhand comment or two. It was only with 11 the show went truly global, and the 50th was a massive global success and event and was probably peak Who fandom and popularity.
I don't think he dismissed it, I think he just acknowledges the fact that Tennant blew up the show and since his Era the numbers have been dwindling. Tennant was a modern-day baker
@@drpepper2519 But that's just it, the numbers only dwindle if you take a very narrow view of them focused mainly on UK numbers. If you look at global viewing figures 11 outperforms 10 by miles during his run and during the 50th, which remember doesn't come until the very end of 11th's run. The success of the 50th as a global phenomenon would not have happened without Moffat's era being so successful overseas in a way RTD era never was. 11's era also was peak global Who marketing, with advertising for series 6 on the side of New York buses for example and series openers premiering in cinemas. Something which just never happened in the Tennant era.
@@drpepper2519there was an old saying: “Christopher Eccleston was my first Doctor. David Tennant was the Doctor I fell in love with, and Matt Smith was my best friend”. That doesn’t apply to me, because (a) I’m a guy and straight, and (b) my first Doctor was John Pertwee.
Side note here in the US, NuWho went from being shown on BBC America to Netflix to HBO and now Disney+. I feel like y'all wonder what our access was like. #crispyforshowrunner love the interviews!
Matt and Capaldi are my modern doctors. My main issue is that Chibnall pushed aside a lot of his era; the Doctors name that he knows and no one else - doesn't make sense in the new canon. River Song conceived in the same way as the timelords, doesn't make sense. With RTD embracing Chibnall's retcons it seems like unfortunately that is the era that is being pushed aside.
When Capaldi assumed, I didnt like him, I had to grown older, to truly admire his stake on the Doctor, I can't say that he is my favorite, because Ten has that nostalgic feeling for me, I got into doctor Who by accident once because it was live on a random cable channel at 3 am in the morning, but any Doctor Who youtube thumbnail that includes Capaldi, is an automatic click for me
9th and 10th where my teenage years Doctors, 11th was when I got my wife hooked in the game, 12th was when I became a father and 13th when I became an engineer. I just can't choose one, each one is itself and unique and, idk man
I've watched this show since it came back in 2005 every time it was on, never missed an episode even when my friends stopped watching after Smith. With all the people coming back this feels like a dream come true and the show is back in my favourite era, I might even be able to talk about the show again with my mates.
I'm trying really hard to keep my expectations lower, but it's getting hard. I'm trying not to expect too much from this specials and the new era of DW because I want to be happy about what I will actually get and not be disappointed because I imagined something that in the end turned out to be impossible to deliver
ever since i saw the meme of david tennet reaching for your vape a week or two ago ive been obsessed with dr who out of nowhere watching all the classic series and cant wait for the new david specials
I love all the other RUclipsr cameos! Really brings this video to the next level. Great job, well structured and very entertaining with great pacing. Can't wait for the next :)
I want to see a Davros Cyberman story, where he uses the Cybermen to enhance the daleks, or the daleks to enhance the cybermen, realising they need allies to take full control.
6:19 My toys r us in Bedford (UK) looked identicle to that image! Me and my cousin always begged for Doctor who stuff from that section way back when. Thanks for the nostalgia hit
I was and still am a bit apprehensive about Russell and Tennant coming back, because even during their initial run there were a lot of things I thought were genuinely bad (as there have been with every era, but certain aspects of this one in particular always rubbed me the wrong way). Since the start of the Moffatt era, I've seen so many people putting Russell's era on a pedestal and treating it as this flawless, untouchable thing, and they've only become louder over the years. So now I'm concerned that all the worst elements of that era will be back and even more pronounced, because any bad writing decisions from back then will seem to have been vindicated by the number of nostalgic voices clamouring for more of the same, and that this shows the writers that it was the "right" way to do Doctor Who all along, rather than critically reflecting on what didn't work and improving on it. Still cautiously optimistic though, and I'm really looking forward to Gatwa's take on the character.
I remember being a kid and being taken to Toys R Us by my grandmother and grandfather and I used to run straight to the Doctor Who section. What a time
hi great episode upload Crispy. i’m a die hard David Tennant fan and i’m still getting over 10’s regeneration. I still cry watching re-runs of it even now. I left the show when Jodie was the doctor i couldn’t stand her doctor or her cardboard companions one bit so David coming back as 14 brought me back. I love Donna she’s my fave companion. I enjoyed Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi’s versions of the doctor but 10 was everything i ever imagined the doctor to be and i grew up watching the show my first introduction to the doctor was Jon Pertwee as the third doctor and watched them all except for Jodie’s. David Tennant is a phenomenal actor and can bring any character he plays to life effortlessly plus he and Catherine work so well together. I wouldn’t say no to a spin off featuring David as the meta crisis doctor or the time lord victorious. Looking forward to seeing what Ncuti has to bring to the role of the doctor never seen him in anything. Roll on the 60th doctor who celebrations. Take care 😘🏴❤️🟦
tbh, I'm one of the people who thinks that RTD is straight up saving the show again. ask the general public and they all remember RTD era, the gas mask episode etc. the best possible way to kick some life into modern who is to bring back tennant and thrust the show straight into ncuti's run. def helps that ncuti is amazing, tbh I'm more excited for his run than the 60th :D
Cool that you give good omens a shout, I absolutely love Terry Praachett, and good omens is the best adaptation of one of his books, imopo. With Neil Gaiman of course. Those books are so tough to adapt.
I think a cool thing they could get into is the idea that tenants version of the doctor genuinely knows what it’s like to die now and how the shock of coming back and the fear or going again could affect his character
this just confirm at least for me why they are bringing david back for a mini series of sort to draw more eye on this show before the new doctor take over
honestly i've haven't watched eccleston or tennant's series as an adult, but i did watch it with my mom as a kid. 12 is my favorite and ncuti's casting is the reason i'm returning to the series. he's gonna be an amazing doctor and it's just a big win for the african diaspora.
Great video! I remember people saying exactly what they did about Chibnall about Moffat also but people like to forget lol I kept seeing rip Doctor Who 1963-2010 then suddenly it’s rip 1963-2017 but either way I loved every era, Moffat era wasn’t my fave due to it being too fantasy sci-fi but I’m so excited for RTD to be back!
The thing about Disney doesn't surprise me that much. My love for doctor who stems from when Disney and BBC made a deal run the RTD era of Doctor Who on Disney XD during the 2010s. That was how I fell in love with Doctor Who, hopefully this partnership between Disney and the BBC breeds success
Finally someone who did the homework! People are still so hell bent that the problem started with the 13th Doctor and I was with the show all the way, no matter which Doctor came in. I gave my two cents only after the era ended (because one should have all the facts before judging...) while a lot of people had already thrown an axe against the show even before S11 aired/ended. I do recognize plenty of problems with some of the characters and stories (especially Ryan), but the Timeless Child was actually the least of those concerns because a lot of it made sense in perspective (despite the fact I was no fan of the Morbius Doctor theory back then). The real problem with this supposed "fall of modern Who" doesn't come from this latest era but rather from Tennant's era which set the zeitgeist of what Doctor Who SHOULD be but not what it COULD be, just like Tom's era in the 80s. Sure, I agree that some of those "nostalgia hype" advocates may be right about the show going back to a more familiar format and helping those who felt alienated after Tennant left. In return, the show is not going forward either, whether you create a new generation of Who under the RTD umbrella or reinforce the old one. Modern Who is so close to being stuck in 2006 forever that we might have to change the name at this point and RTD is not at fault here. RTD is definitely a great writer but he won't always be there to pick up all the missing pieces and the audience (as well as the critics) need to understand that this show constantly evolves into very different things, not necessarily the ones we identify with or remember. With that said, I'm sure RTD will bring a lot of joy to a lot of people, even if the show has a tough road ahead to pave.
I have faith in Ncuti the previous images like 15 look great and that is also thanks to Russel T, also believed that thanks to the low ratings in the Jodie era the BBC brought back Russel T We will have 14 with David Tennant being new and nostalgic while giving us a new doctor with Ncuti as 15
I never thought it would be possible for anyone to beat Peter Capaldi, Sylvester McCoy or Colin Baker as my favourite doctors. Nctui gatwa is such a good actor and a wonderful human, I can already feel him becoming my favourite
Im hapy the big criticism essay format wins more and more hearts and brains. Now people just need to ralize whatever they watched and enjoyed: theres more where that comes from. Its a family of videos. Madvocate, Mauler, Hbomberguy, Krimson Rogue, they have all roasted the Worst and praised the Best
I just hope tennant's final line isn't another spin on "I don't wanna go." Like they can reference that if they want to, just please don't make it the end.
@@FallingJinx Yes, but I feel that should made clear before this point, not his *very last line.* Like maybe he says "I'm ready to go" earlier in the episode, or just before he steps into the TARDIS but then gives a longer speech while he's in there. Though I also feel it would be difficult to get the character to that point over what? A couple days of time? Unless the memories of his lives with other faces influences him somehow, which it should really. I hope we see some marked difference in 14's personality vs 10. Otherwise what's the point of him having lived as 11-13?
@@alansmithee419 Yeah, it's a little uncertain how long 14 will last (will the story pick up immediately at his regeneration?), so that's true. I imagine that maybe finishing some things that were left "undone" might help him - which is likely why Donna is involved. As for what else, I'm not sure, but I'm like 70% sure it's going to end up with him finally being ready to go, since his last line was pretty famous.
I'm excited for the Disney+ deal. Between Disney and Sony/Bad Wolf Studios they hopefully have the money and the tools for consistently high production values as long as they can keep us viewers interested. I'm very excited to see Ncuti make his debut! Also super happy to revisit David for a few episodes! Best of both worlds. "...and in years to come, you might find yourself revisiting a few, but just the old favorites, eh?"
I really want the Beast to return, spread out through the universe more in an overarching story, and eventually he meets the Daleks. Imagine, the original forefather of evil, meets a relatively new group of creatures that are just as evil or maybe worse than him. Imagine their fight; the Daleks invade Hell and humiliate the Beast. Or the Beast dominates the Daleks?
I really do hope this is a turning point in the series and not a “more of the same in a different package” kind of thing. I’m really disappointed that I’ve come to despise a show that defined my RUclips content. I hope it can prove me and everyone else wrong, but it will take a lot to fix the issues that it has acquired from 13’s era, perhaps even full blown retcons.
I am fairly new to the Doctor Who fandom. Picked up the whole New Who series about a year ago and caught up in time to be excited with everyone for the next Doctor. I also watched some Classic Who episodes recommended by the fandom and it has been awesome. I regret not watching the series earlier. That said I’m so excited for Ncuti and the return of Tennant. Even as a new fan I can tell that everyone is excited. It does feel like the best time to be a Doctor Who fan. ❤ As a side note I understand in a way why people weren’t a big fan of of the 13th Doctor or I should say the writing around the 13th Doctor but I was a big fan of her character. I don’t know I personally have liked every single Doctor, they all have something that makes all their seasons interesting even if the writing is not always the best. I do have a soft spot for Matt Smith and Jodie though like I said after catching up, I like all of them. I’m very excited for Ncuti!
I agree, it's an excellent time to be a Doctor Who fan! I'm not SUPER new to the series, but I only started watching in 2017 when Peter Capaldi's final season was airing. While I like Jodie, I had a lot of issues with aspects of her era and there were such droughts in between new seasons. This feels like my first time getting to be really hyped for something new alongside the rest of the fandom, and it's quite exciting.
I'm so excited to see Ncuti, the only complaint I have that is barely a complaint is that I wish his outfit was something more like what he wore when he was announced or something more 70's like Prince, idk I think it would suit him. It's such a minor thing tho and I'm sure I'll learn to love it
The return of David Tennant (this time as the Fourteenth Doctor) made a lot of sense to me in universe due to that line about the Doctor revisiting some past faces in the future "but just the old favourites". Looking forward to the return of Catherine Tate as well... and the Star Beast story line's adaptation. If it's as good as previous adaptations of Doctor Who stories from other medias, then I think RTD has a winner on his hands. Also Nchuti's a treasure, I'm looking forward to his era.
For anybody who is interested, the Toys R Us was in Croydon, London just off a road named Purley Way. I used to go there all the time and it creeped me out when that picture started appearing recently. But it’s where I bought the TARDIS that you could spin on your finger
Great video, kinda surprised that the whole Republic of Ireland streaming black hole wasn't mentioned. Ncuti's casting was inspired, I'm genuinely so hyped. Also, ALL OF WHO ON IPLAYER AHHHH
14:05 Tennant will be the 15th Doctor if you’re counting chronologically. You didn’t count John Hurt’s Doctor, who was a legitimate incarnation in Time Lord canon. If you count the fact that Tennant also burned a regeneration when he cloned himself, that would increase count by yet another, which would make the upcoming Tennant specials having Tennant as #16 rather than 14 as you stated. But who’s counting, really, and WHEN WILL THEY BRING BACK MATT SMITH?
“Down-to-earth while you’re up in space” is why science-fantasy can be my favourite genre. Inject philosophical arguments into a relatable context on a fantastical setting with worldbuilding rooted in scientific concepts.
if it matters, i was part of the good omens crowd that very recently watched the RTD era last month and it absolutely ruined my life (i loved it a lot and i'm looking forward to what rtd has next in store!)
Russel has already done so much from us already, but personally there's one more thing I need for the 60th to be fantastic. I need to see multiple doctors outside of 14 and 15. I'd love to see the New Who Doctors return but that seems unlikely. But I'd ABSOLUTELY settle for Classic. Especially 6 & 8
Russel does not like the Classic Doctors. I do not think the 60th will be any good, because it is not a multi Doctor story that captures enough of the past Incarnations. 14 and 15 are in it, but will be at the end when 14 regenerates. That is not a multi Doctor story. That is a regeneration story. He could use the Celestial Toymaker to create a story that deals with a few of the previous Doctors dealing with him exactly as the 14th faces him, and could use 6, 7 and 8 in that story, or any one of the Doctors to do so, as the novels and Big Finish both did.@@CrispyPro
@@shauntempley9757I mean his last series was almost 15 years old now . There’s a whole new generation that looks back on early new who the same way people looked back at the last stint of McCoy and baker . So like it or not it’s the shows history with actors that can still reprise there roles while still looking like they haven’t aged too much. I also think that the inclusion of the toy maker is a well enough inclusion as he’s been on wish lists since the 80s. I’d say aswell we got a pretty good cameo montage of old who in the centenary episode
I really think that outside of die hands fans that stuck through the ride many casuals left after s5 and only really jumped back in for say the regeneration episodes/first appearance episodes but outside of that it wasn’t nearly the household name it once was. Even from personal experience I dropped off during smiths tenure (binged s5 after it aired) and only really live watched once capaldi was the doctor but I must say I dropped off again after hell bent left such a Sour taste in my taste. What I’m realising is is that the show needs quality consistency in order for it to keep viewers engaged . You can have amazing actors but if the material is bad even that can’t save it
Doctor Who merch is still ready and available in nerd stores all over the place! If you go into any collector store they’re gonna have stuff, and if you’re going to places like hot topic they’re going to have it as well. 😊
Here's hopeing Dinesy can fund an animated spin-off series in the beautiful style of Star Wars Bad Batch, that would allow us to get all sorts of timey-wimey every episode with every incarnation of the Doctor and every companion or call back character in play!
I would certainly disagree that Ncuti is being overshadowed. In a way, it was going to happen no matter what; if they'd made his first episode the 60th he would've been overshadowed by whatever they did to celebrate the show's past (returning Doctors and such). But he has been so hyped, and I mean really hyped, way more than Tennant's return in the 60th has been. We, I think, have the best scenario we could've gotten in the situation; the return of a popular Doctor to celebrate the anniversary and to potentially attract viewership back, while all the while we have this exciting new Doctor waiting in the wings, who's been hyped and marketed, and there will be barely a month until his very first episode, meaning that people will not have long to wait to see him in action properly.
You nailed the whoniverse comment haha fingers crossed we get it on Disney+. Also as a Brit in NZ, I'm a little sad it won't be on TVNZ, but more money for the whoniverse? Yes please!!
Plus promotion at the end of the era was like no where to be scene and look at us for having the release date already for the 60th, I didn't expect to have those this earlier on.
I was lucky enough to be at the @60 A Musical Celebration, and when Davies walked in the crowd went WILD! And I mean WILD! It made me feel bad for the other showrunners who were there, but they seemed to be completely fine with it and seemed to completely understand it.
Great video! As incredibly excited as I am for the 60th I saw a post on social media a while back about how instead of Tennant returning it should be Paul Mcgann since he only got a movie and I think I like the idea of that a bit better.
From what I've heard about s14, I'm excited to see some experimental stories such as a musical episode. Depending on the narrative use of David Tennant's return within the 60th, it'll either be great or will feed an ongoing issue with Doctor Who, it's the perfect opportunity for the show to move out of the shadow of RTD's original run by having him and David move the shadow out of the way rather than making it more pronounced.
With most of the announcements crispy talked about individually wouldn’t be a problem but since we are getting all of these people back plus rtd is doing the Sarah Jane thing again with Bonnie Langford as Mel it feels like he his just doing his original run again not letting the show move forward with Ncuti Gatwa instead of repeating 2005-2010 all over again beat by beat
@@kevin10001 Hopefully it's a case of having cake and eating too, bringing Tennant and Tate back as an opportunity for people to say goodbye to them and embrace the new version of the show, explore the flaws in the argument for bringing them back permanently. Hopefully the message of the specials isn't "Doctor Who can't function without David Tennant", as this will prevent the show from progressing.
@@mrdoctorgilmore exactly I’m not against multi doctor stories what I’m against is making David 4 versions with him being 2 regenerations and the meta crisis doctor all before his first run was over now if this regeneration is real then it makes him feel more important to the show then anyone else only trying to get back fan who didn’t become fans of the show with David but became fans of him as an actor and a great actor he is but trying to get those fans back maybe a lost cause
@@kevin10001 The fact of the matter is, David IS bigger than all the others. This anniversary needs to tell audiences to move on if the show is to progress any further, since they've been clinging to the Tennant era for such a long time.
Tennant is definitely my Doctor, but Eccleston and Smith were absolutely brilliant as well. I think Capaldi had potential, but I fell off because it felt like the writing team wanted Clara to be more of the main character than the main character. I'd never heard the term "Mary Sue" until she came along. But I do think it was right around that time when the big wigs started getting obsessed with pushing "strong female characters" (in quotes because I think the previous female companions had all been great). The problem being she was blandly written and not given (what felt like) any real character flaws. I liked Rose, Martha, Donna, and Amy. (and ofc Mickey and Rory) Here's to hoping RTD still has "it" as opposed to all of us who were waiting for Filoni to come "Make Star Wars great again."
Disney won't meddle with the story. The agreement if money for special effects only and story suggestions that they don't have to do. Plus American tried a doctor who movie already and it went poorly. They will put in the cash and leave it if it's doing well monetarily.
On your budget/special effects point: I agree bad effects are part of the appeal, but in the way that it's basically a signature of the show. You speak to your parents who watched the show, it is often one of the first things they always mention is the poor effects. It makes fresh viewings at times quite funny, and can add to the campy nature of the show. I hope they keep the effects crappy.
Tennant coming back doesnt take anything away from Ncuti, it gives alot though. Tennant is there to make trying doctor who again more enticing before transferring to Ncuti
I agree that the future looks bright with Russell at the helm. The man knows how to write incredibly successful television. Tennant and Tate returning for the 60th is exciting but Ncuti is what I'm looking forward to the most. He's fantastic in Sex Education and if he carries over a fraction of that camp eccentricity then he'll make for one hell of a Doctor. It all looks like it's onwards and upwards again. Let's hope that it delivers. In regards to the "Fall" of the show. I think it fell off after Matt's first series. S5 was the last really good, well written and well developed series. I feel there was a brief crossover of fans from the RTD era willing to give Smith/Moffat a chance and a selection of new audiences being introduced to the show through the new Doctor. Following S5, I personally feel, there was a significant drop in the quality of writing and an even bigger drop in audience and commercial appeal. Sure it was making it big in the USA with S6 but over here in Blighty most people were switching off in favour of other programmes and it's not all too surprising considering how S6 shaped up on the whole. It had its moments from S6 onwards with some great episodes and, naturally, the 50th put the show back in the public eye, but I don't think it ever really recovered post-S5 and was steadily on the decline up until the promos for the 60th.
I'm highly inclined to agree, and I think RTD ironically contributed to that by making S4 & its specials such a final note, at least in my eyes. S4's finale was *my* Infinity War - The Doctor and literally every New Who companion, along with their spinoff cast, up against their most iconic adversaries with the fate of all time & space in the balance. Couple that with a final send-off for the Master & the near death of the Doctor, I would have personally been okay with the show fully ending at S4. S5 was really good, though with the ending piggybacking off of last season's crisis, I think it was fair to say that Doctor Who just wasn't going to be the same after the RTD era. Don't get me wrong, there have been INCREDIBLE episodes in between - some of the best we've seen in a decade - but for the longevity & overall timelessness of the show, RTD's writing style just...fits. He knows what he's doing, and I'm hoping he plans to bring his a-game this time around too
DT UK audience viewership was high but the international base was much higher post his era under Smith. The idea Doctor Who fell off under Smith is so harsh on Matt.
I grew up on 10 and RTD but I am worried about them coming back. I do think there’s a legitimate concern with focusing on that era so much. Like what’s gonna happen when they both leave again. That era has become so synonymous with the show I think You risk people rejecting anything else. That’s already happened to some extent. Unless it’s 10 a lot of people just don’t care and that’s dangerous for a show like Doctor Who. We’ve also opened the floodgates for previous Doctors to return and not just in a cameo role like The Curator. RTD has changed as a writer and that’s great but I really would have preferred someone new.
31:18 As an American who wanted to watch Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe and the only way was (and probably still is at the moment) via ABC iview, I completely feel for your reaction that Doctor Who is gonna be on Disney+ outside the UK. 🤣
The one thing about RTD is that he has so much faith in Doctor Who as an IP. He not only takes risks, but he has the confidence in the show to pull through. He is not just the head writer, he is the showrunner, moreso than Steven Moffat was, certainly more than Chibnall was. Russel doesn't just want to write a few episodes and call it a year. He has a real vision for the show and has already done a hell of a lot to pursue it. He's brought back Tennant and Tate for the 60th! He got Neil Patrick Harris, an all-time-great to be a real event villain. I don't know how he wrangled Ncuti Gatwa to partake, but he is the exact sort of leading man Russel needs to not just restore Doctor Who, but to take it beyond what it has been before. He has already done more to establish the legitimacy of the show than Moffat had by the time or than Chibnall ever did.
Moffat was unfortunately torn between both Sherlock and Doctor Who. And both kinda fizzled out under him. He's a great writer, but not the best man at the helm. He had a plan with the 11th but it kinda meandered with the 12th. Felt like Peter left just as he came into his own as the doctor.
i love the video but i feel like a few things were inaccurate. this certainly isn't the first time Doctor Who did an American push. They funnelled tons of money into season six and shot in the US on location. Amy's voiceover narration that explained the Doctor's backstory that was only on international broadcasts. And does anyone forget the Doctor Who HBO distribution deal which lead to the budget for the show tripling? I think the "Tales of the Tardis" miniseries shows BBC retains all creative rights. Just some things to think about
I would have to rewatch Legends of the Sea Devils.... but as of FLUX, i can now say one thing, I enjoy the arc of Learning about Jo Martin's Renegade Doctor's companion. AND when Jodie & Yaz are trapped in handcuffs, programmed by Peter Capaldi's voice as the Doctor so Jodie is trying to immitate Capaldi saying : "RELEASE".... but that says a lot about the Chibnall era, no?
#crispyforshowrunner
I just can’t wrap my mind around the whole “it’s unfair to Ncuti Gatwa” thing.
In my opinion, they handled it in the best way possible. They announced him BEFORE the confirmation of Tennant as Fourteen. I’d actually find it *more* disrespectful if they had Jodie regenerate into Ncuti… only for Ncuti’s debut episode to be an anniversary one where he’s now overshadowed by other Doctors.
They did it the right way.
So true! These comments have made me realise that announcing Ncuti before was the best thing they could do!
I think it was a stroke of genius to announce Ncuti Gatwa before David Tennant. That assured us that no matter what, we were getting a brand new Doctor. We were just getting David Tennant back for a bit as well.
ABSOLUTELY it was the right call!
@@JRCSalterthey weren't rumours dude... it was confirmed
@@MyBelovedGhostAndMe I never heard of it being confirmed by any official source. Everything I heard, I considered to be a rumour.
Honestly, acting as yourself is actually really hard, being able to inject enough authenticity from your own personality without it becoming just you over the role is super hard, and the people who pull it off like Baker or Tennant are generally incredibly talented and well trained.
Baker and Tennant are verrrry good!
As a classically trained actor in a former life I can cosign on this. Vulnerability is the name of the game and if you can convey that AND truthfully come off as your authentic self you are on the top of your game!
When I think “actors who play themselves under different names,” the first person that comes to mind is Ryan Reynolds
@@rexex345 what do you mean fail? He does a terrific job at acting
I love that David is back, but with his replacement already in the wings. It would feel regressive if it was for longer than a few specials. The show feels in safe hands.
Well said :)
I'm sure Big Finish will be able to make 14 last for a lot longer.
Glad you enjoyed!
I am praying Disney doesn’t ruin doctor who🥲
totally agree with you @Latriise
Disney is doing nothing but distributing the show here in America. Literally that’s it.

I will never understand dislike for Peter Capadli era. He is easily the best actor in the new Who and he has most interesting episodes imho.
Also Jodie is such a great actress and it's sad that her series were not as good.
Seconded! Easily my favorite Doctor! He elevated sub par material.
Capaldi when given some good material, KILLED it. I found some episodes extremely rewatchable.
We will have to keep an eye on Disney!
the bbc keeps a tight leash on there properties, so disney isnt gonna get any ownership
"Sigh"
We'll see.
@@CrispyPro Exactly, although I heard that the TV movie with Paul Mcgann was from a U.S company, I could be wrong.
Disney are never going to own Doctor Who.
@@TotallyFknAliens oh no I fully understand why they did it, it just doesn't yet have an in universe explanation and that irks the nerd in me.
Seems like they're just having doctors regenerate into whatever they want now 😂
Russell stated in an interview why they decided not to do that. Basically, one, Jodie is a lot shorter and smaller than David and making her clothes fit him would not have worked well and second Russell was afraid that it would be criticized as drag or mocking drag and he wanted to stay far away from that bed of snakes
Doctor who has such a rocky history there should be a video called the rise, fall, rise, fall and rise of doctor who
I love this haha
I actually was more compelled by Ecclestons Doctor and imo he was overshadowed by Tennant and Smith. He started the more human aspect of the doctor but also knew when he had to throw down. He nailed the look of a lonely grizzled but also very hopeful and optimistic doctor
Yo Crispy,
Old Whovian here.
Glad you're excited!
OK folks, let's put the past behind us. And get EXCITED! about what lies ahead. I know we're all gonna enjoy the Christmas offering. Soak it up, enjoy, 'cos reading between the lines, it looks like we'll have a wee wait as it seems the next series, season will air, early summer, May time maybe?,
I reckon, so let's just enjoy what we got to look forward to.
Trust the RTD2 era.
In the meantime. Hava wonderful festive holiday Crispy in the Ozzy summer as we freeze our goolies off in the northern hemisphere.
One Love all the way Tx
David Tennant and Tom Baker are the essence of Doctor Who!
Both are the only Doctor's that regeneratated into the same faces with the 14th and The Curator
Infact, in the novels and other medias, The Doctor regenerates into Tom Baker many times in the later versions.
Definitely looking forward to Ncuti Gatwa's performance as the The Doctor!
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED David Tenant. Yet, Matt Smith was amazing and cannot be so easily pushed aside.
Thank you! Matt was awesome
I just can't choose one, each one is itself and unique and, idk man
@@EngineerAAJ Exactly. :D
I know its so hard to manage expectations, I'm super excited but nervous!
You’re right! I watched the Specials on Disney+ (American here) because of David but seeing Ncuti definitely got me excited to see what happens next
ever since i saw the meme of david tennet reaching for your vape a week or two ago ive been obsessed with dr who out of nowhere watching all the classic series and cant wait for the new david specials

Glad you guys are enjoying this type of video! I will strive to do more like it
One of the many things I miss from the Russel era is the Running.
I hope Ncuti gets to run down a lot of hallways with Murray Gold in the background.
Your favorite doctor is Peter Capaldi? I see you're a man of culture as well!
I want to see a Davros Cyberman story, where he uses the Cybermen to enhance the daleks, or the daleks to enhance the cybermen, realising they need allies to take full control.
6:19
My toys r us in Bedford (UK) looked identicle to that image!
I’m definitely hype for the new episodes. Hope things get back on tack with the return of Russell. 💙
I'm excited for YEARLY Series of Doctor Who
Cool that you give good omens a shout, I absolutely love Terry Praachett, and good omens is the best adaptation of one of his books, imopo. With Neil Gaiman of course. Those books are so tough to adapt.
I think a cool thing they could get into is the idea that tenants version of the doctor genuinely knows what it’s like to die now and how the shock of coming back and the fear or going again could affect his character
10:11 What a handsome chap
WHO IS THAT HANDSOME CHAP??
this just confirm at least for me why they are bringing david back for a mini series of sort
to draw more eye on this show before the new doctor take over
The closing criticism from Jay about the video not being long enough was just *chef's kiss*
This video is the Journey's end of doctor who youtube videos, with cameos from everyone across the who youtube universe.
honestly i've haven't watched eccleston or tennant's series as an adult, but i did watch it with my mom as a kid. 12 is my favorite and ncuti's casting is the reason i'm returning to the series. he's gonna be an amazing doctor and it's just a big win for the african diaspora.
I think a lot of Chibnall’s problems were trying to do too much in one script. It was like three seasons of stuff
I have faith in Ncuti the previous images like 15 look great and that is also thanks to Russel T, also believed that thanks to the low ratings in the Jodie era the BBC brought back Russel T We will have 14 with David Tennant being new and nostalgic while giving us a new doctor with Ncuti as 15
Low ratings in the Capaldi era as well. Series 8,9 and 10 being the three lowest of first 10 series.
I never thought it would be possible for anyone to beat Peter Capaldi, Sylvester McCoy or Colin Baker as my favourite doctors.
Nctui gatwa is such a good actor and a wonderful human, I can already feel him becoming my favourite
Nctui is already my favourite dr
Real ones choose Capaldi as their Doctor, it is known
Im hapy the big criticism essay format wins more and more hearts and brains. Now people just need to ralize whatever they watched and enjoyed: theres more where that comes from. Its a family of videos. Madvocate, Mauler, Hbomberguy, Krimson Rogue, they have all roasted the Worst and praised the Best
I just hope tennant's final line isn't another spin on "I don't wanna go."
Like they can reference that if they want to, just please don't make it the end.
Maybe the will give him a farewell, where he will be ready to go
@@FallingJinx Yes, but I feel that should made clear before this point, not his *very last line.* Like maybe he says "I'm ready to go" earlier in the episode, or just before he steps into the TARDIS but then gives a longer speech while he's in there.
Hearing you say "RTD left 15 years ago" made my hair turn just a little more grey, oh my god.
As a side note I understand in a way why people weren’t a big fan of of the 13th Doctor or I should say the writing around the 13th Doctor but I was a big fan of her character.
@@supremeoverlorde2109 Agreed!!!
I'm so excited to see Ncuti, the only complaint I have that is barely a complaint is that I wish his outfit was something more like what he wore when he was announced or something more 70's like Prince, idk I think it would suit him. It's such a minor thing tho and I'm sure I'll learn to love it
6:13, yes there was a lot of weird Doctor Who merchandise around in the 2000s. I still have the 'Official Cookbook' from that era!
That Disney+ deal makes Doctor Who _way_ more accessible for me in Canada. Before it was locked behind Crave, which sucked.
LOTS of stuff to look forward to!
For anybody who is interested, the Toys R Us was in Croydon, London just off a road named Purley Way.

Russel has already done so much from us already, but personally there's one more thing I need for the 60th to be fantastic. I need to see multiple doctors outside of 14 and 15. I'd love to see the New Who Doctors return but that seems unlikely. But I'd ABSOLUTELY settle for Classic. Especially 6 & 8
It will be interesting to see if ANY other doctors appear in the 60th (apart from Ncuti)
You can have amazing actors but if the material is bad even that can’t save it
@@shauntempley9757 Ncuti has a bigger role in the episodes themselves as shown by the trailer, it's not just a regeneration scene
I firmly believe this is your magnum opus (so far!) Absolutely brilliant Crispy!! Really engaging watch and discussion! 🔥🔥 #CrispyForShowrunner
Much appreciated!
Pumped for Tennant and Ncuti. Disney involvement I’ll reserve judgement on, as long as they keep hands off creatively the money will roll in for them.
You nailed the whoniverse comment haha fingers crossed we get it on Disney+.
Also as a Brit in NZ, I'm a little sad it won't be on TVNZ, but more money for the whoniverse? Yes please!!
Sean Ferrick AND Full Fat cameos?
Did you know Chris Chibs wrote 42 in RTD era?
Plus promotion at the end of the era was like no where to be scene and look at us for having the release date already for the 60th, I didn't expect to have those this earlier on.
I was lucky enough to be at the @60 A Musical Celebration, and when Davies walked in the crowd went WILD! And I mean WILD! It made me feel bad for the other showrunners who were there, but they seemed to be completely fine with it and seemed to completely understand it.
So, Donna Noble is basically a Disney Princess now. Right?
Where are you Crispy!?!
Great video!
As incredibly excited as I am for the 60th I saw a post on social media a while back about how instead of Tennant returning it should be Paul Mcgann since he only got a movie and I think I like the idea of that a bit better.
RTD returning is still so fucking awesome, he’s gonna make Doctor Who good again
@@kevin10001
The fact of the matter is, David IS bigger than all the others. This anniversary needs to tell audiences to move on if the show is to progress any further, since they've been clinging to the Tennant era for such a long time.
I love your take n our show. I love your positivity. I can hardly wait.
(and ofc Mickey and Rory)
Here's to hoping RTD still has "it" as opposed to all of us who were waiting for Filoni to come "Make Star Wars great again."
Its so early to say, RTD may not capture the same magic. The future is promising but stay cautiously optimistic
Seeing other DW creators in one video makes me noticed Holy fk FFV expresses his words with his mouth sooooo much
I agree that the future looks bright with Russell at the helm.
This was a good take!
@@CrispyPro Thanks. Fantastic video, by the way! Very concise and entertaining.
I am hoping RTD only stays on for a few seasons and hands off to someone new

As an American who wanted to watch Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe and the only way was (and probably still is at the moment) via ABC iview, I completely feel for your reaction that Doctor Who is gonna be on Disney+ outside the UK. 🤣
I hope Ncuti does the ComiCon tours, I'd love the chance to meet him in the US sometime
I hope future doctors meet David Tenant's Doctor and get confused on whether it is 10, 14, or the Metacrisis version.
Just some things to think about
Yeah, RTD confirmed that for Tales of the Tardis was definitely only the BBC money :D
Where in Australia are you picking up Doctor Who Magazine? I cannot find it anywhere
I've only been able to find it at select News agents, its a bit of luck!
I'm looking forward to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor but I'm really excited to Tennant and Tate back on the show one last time.
