It will forever bother me that leaders of colonial Europe failed to see the opportunity to create brotherly relations rather than domineering ones with Africa. They could have generated massively more wealth as well as assisted in the formation of new nation states that would have felt a debt to them. Instead, they plundered what they could and ran away as villians.
Europe and Ethiopia actually had great relationship for many centuries. Even Italians and Abyssinians were allies since the time of Rome and Axum. This changed in the late 19th century due factors such as the rise of whyte supremacy.

Ethiopia had a very well-structured system in place. Centuries old prior to colonization even being considered in Africa. Italy was not only defeated by the Ethiopians (Numerous times) in numerous battles. Ethiopia defeated each & every foreign invader (Egyptians, Turkish, Ottomans). I am proud of the sacrifice of my forefathers. Proud to Be Ethiopian 🙂
I have heard many modern Zambians say they had no business in WWII. It needs to remembered that the Northern Rhodesia Regiment was used by Britain to help liberate Ethiopia, and it was Ethiopia's insisted independence that inspired other African countries as well. So while the Northern Rhodesians also fought in Burma and occupied Japan, they also inadvertetly fought for African independence.
Very interesting, my great grandparents were Rhodesian , sadly they passed away without documenting any of their experiences. I'm trying to learn more about the role the country played on the international level.

My grandfather worked for IBM an would spend time in Zambia developing systems for mines. Don't get me wrong , I've spoken to my family who fought in the Rhodesian bush war and in Angolan war , Mozambique. They said it was stunning . In some Chinese history textbook, we were taught that our then Qing government, its ignorance, arrogance, and corruption, were heavily to blame for Western colonizers being able to impose their unequal treaties on us, citing Ethiopia as a successful case of resistance against the colonizers - because if the Ethiopians, being geographically closer to Europe with just 110,000 soldiers could defeat western colonizers, why couldn’t we, being significantly further with practically a bottomless well of manpower, and a much more massive economy and military power, do so?

Honestly, considering how Ethiopia still has the problems that even colonized countries here still have, despite not being colonized themselves, i think it's clear not being colonized didn't change much for them. They still have insecurity, corruption, poverty, tribalism, civil wars, and much more, sometimes worse than colonized countries like Botswana and Namibia who do better😢
You didn't mention the Black Americans that came and trained Ethiopians and that was major reason in Ethiopia not being colonized. Also, Jamaicans scammed and pretended to be Black Americans when Ethiopia thanked us to give land.

What I am about to say, without understanding the historical context of how Ethiopia became what it is throughout history and what took to get them there, might come off as trying to diminish the work of Ethiopian leaders like Tewodros and Haile, which is NOT what I want to come across as, and I will explain after. A big part of why Ethiopia was also never really colonized was also due to its 'status' throughout history. Before colonialism, before triangle trade, before social darwinism and scientific racism of the 19th Century, Ethiopia was still known to Europe. It was known since classical times in fact, but very differently from other African powers. It was the apostolic kingdom, the land of Solomon, the lion of Africa, and one of the supposed origins for the "Kingdom of Prester John" myth. Where Portuguese went to Kongo as bandits, robbing them off their coastal islands and imposing their will on Angola for example, they formed an alliance with Ethiopia. Where Britain brought their maxim guns and quinine to deep Africa to manifest 'White Man's burden', a veil for their extractive colonization, they formed trade agreements with Ethiopia. Where the Europeans went on to partake in their racist pseudoscience to classify humans to 'macro races', Ethiopians were included as Caucasoids. This is, as I mentioned before, not to take away from the struggle of Ethiopians, who struggled against Caliphates, against Ottomans, and Harar, against Somali sultanates, and Egyptians Khediviates, against Italian fascists, and many more. But in the eyes of most Europeans, Ethiopians were always seen as 'different', for good or ill.

Thats what blows my mind as an Ethiopian. The state was poor with zero resources. Fascism's thirst for war and conquest was seemingly the only reason to invade Ethiopia. I wonder if Italy would have eventually gone bankrupt trying to hold all that land if they werent removed by the Brits?
Colonisation is a détermination that comes from the outside and of which the inside has dealt with. Thus, the history has taught that Ethiopia has managed to extract itself from the determination, a contempt called colonization.. As the present is heavy with the past, just like the future is heavy with the present, the question that is relevant is what does this past mean to Ethiopia’s present? In trying to answer this question we can observe that a few years ago Ethiopians who haven’t submitted themselves to the contempt of colonialism were busy with killing each other in a bloody civil war in the Tigray’s region, we can noticed that in the same country the ethnicity has been elevated to the rank of the essential where each ethnic or tribe, or region has its own armed militia. The Tigray’s People Liberation Front, the Omoro have their own, etc. And we can them conclude that if the Ethiopians have fought against the colonial contempt, but can’t have mercy on each other, can’t share the common blessings, can’t be each other’s keeper, etc, then the status of the only country that has escaped the madness of the colonists becomes meaningless.

I just recently read that Italy occupied space in Ethiopia which may be different but it doesn't sound like it. Ethiopia was never colonized? Not true. Italy had been ruling Ethiopia from 1935-1941. Plus a big part of modern Ethiopia (Ogaden) was a Somali territory under British as recent as 1954. The territory was transferred by the British to Haile Salaise just before Somalia's independence.

Ethiopia had a very well-structured system in place. Centuries old prior to colonization even being considered in Africa.
Italy was not only defeated by the Ethiopians (Numerous times) in numerous battles.
Ethiopia defeated each & every foreign invader (Egyptians, Turkish, Ottomans).

I have heard many modern Zambians say they had no business in WWII. It needs to remembered that the Northern Rhodesia Regiment was used by Britain to help liberate Ethiopia, and it was Ethiopia's insisted independence that inspired other African countries as well. So while the Northern Rhodesians also fought in Burma and occupied Japan, they also inadvertetly fought for African independence.
Very interesting, my great grandparents were Rhodesian , sadly they passed away without documenting any of their experiences.

What I am about to say, without understanding the historical context of how Ethiopia became what it is throughout history and what took to get them there, might come off as trying to diminish the work of Ethiopian leaders like Tewodros and Haile, which is NOT what I want to come across as, and I will explain after.
A big part of why Ethiopia was also never really colonized was also due to its 'status' throughout history. Before colonialism, before triangle trade, before social darwinism and scientific racism of the 19th Century, Ethiopia was still known to Europe. It was known since classical times in fact, but very differently from other African powers. It was the apostolic kingdom, the land of Solomon, the lion of Africa, and one of the supposed origins for the "Kingdom of Prester John" myth. Where Portuguese went to Kongo as bandits, robbing them off their coastal islands and imposing their will on Angola for example, they formed an alliance with Ethiopia. Where Britain brought their maxim guns and quinine to deep Africa to manifest 'White Man's burden', a veil for their extractive colonization, they formed trade agreements with Ethiopia. Where the Europeans went on to partake in their racist pseudoscience to classify humans to 'macro races', Ethiopians were included as Caucasoids.
This is, as I mentioned before, not to take away from the struggle of Ethiopians, who struggled against Caliphates, against Ottomans, and Harar, against Somali sultanates, and Egyptians Khediviates, against Italian fascists, and many more. But in the eyes of most Europeans, Ethiopians were always seen as 'different', for good or ill.

Ethiopia was never colonized? Not true. Italy had been ruling Ethiopia from 1935-1941. Plus a big part of modern Ethiopia (Ogaden) was a Somali territory under British as recent as 1954. The territory was transferred by the British to Haile Salaise just before Somalia's independence.

Ethiopia was colonized by Italy. Ethiopia lost the war and their country. It was the other countries that fought to rid Italy from Ethiopia but it was 100% guaranteed colonized.
