The more I listen to this orator the more I hear mistakes and errors. First and foremost the TPLF in 1991 never had the power nor wherewithal to tell or give the EPLF or Eritreans Independence. His error at 11:19 and at 22:41 of the video where he stated that the... "TPLF government decided to give Eritreans their independence?!!!" Factually and historically wrong! The EPLF (Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front) helped the TPLF ( Tigrai Peoples Liberation Front) militarily and politically to defeat the Derg Regime in Addis Ababa. The EPLF in the 1970's militarily trained and politically educated the EPLF fighters in Nakfa to fight the Derg regime inside Ethiopia. When the Derg regime militarily over powered the TPLF in the battle for Shire in February 1989, the EPLF artillery support had to intervene to defeat the Derg and to capture the whole of Tigrai province. EPLF tanks marched in Addis Ababa in 1991 and liberated the Ethiopian capital from the Derg regime. Eritrean fighters fought and died in Ethiopia to get rid of the Derg Regime and helped the TPLF assume power in Addis in 1991. Clearly in 1991 EPLF had the upper power to do whatever it wanted in Addis after it defeated the Derg regime. EPLF could have stayed in power in Addis but it chose to hand power to TPLF because EPLF had a principal to uphold. Even after defeating the most Powerful military in Africa at the time, the EPLF chose to legitimize Eritrean Independence through fair elections (referendum). In 1993, under the supervision of the UN Observer Mission (UNOVER) and international observers Eritreans overwhemingly, 99.8%, voted for independence! So Eritreans, after they were denied their independence by the UN and the US in the 1950's, fought for thirty years, against all odds, and achieved their freedom and independence in 1991. No one country or nation gave Eritrea its independence! Eritreans earned their right of independence and freedom through their own strong will, sacrifice, struggle and determination! This is insane. I have seen this video 3 times and the history flow is good until the speaker twisted the most important part of the history. After the independence, All the problems came and started in 1998 when the Ethiopian regime announced war against Eritrea. I don’t understand Why do you choose not to say something about this 3 stages of war that cost those countries their hope to development. Yeah. I’ll tell you about that. There’s kids who don’t have parents or guardians and live on the streets. There are many children who feed their families by selling chewing and whatever not, to make make money to support their parents. The majority left over there depend on their family members abroad to send them money and every young person wants to leave the country at any cost. If you’re not from there or have not been there to live long enough to see, don’t comment. Your denial is worst than the situation itself. It’s like killing your brothers/sisters again and again. If you have any sense of conscience you’d understand otherwise you’re no different from the oppressor.

Eh, it's hard to say... Colonialism sets up extractive institutions against the marginalized, no doubt. However, inclusive economic and political institutions heavily depend on pre-colonial outlook on institutions. Prior to colonialism, Eritrea was divided into different polities: Some were an Islamic vassal state of notables to the Ottomans (Habesh Eyalet), others being centralized Christian kingdoms (Hamassien). Based on what I read so far in Lords of the Red Sea by D'Auvray, it looks like they were pretty extractive, especially the Christian polities that were similar to the Ethiopian Empire in political structure: feudal, absolutist, and militarized extractive institutions. Those polities weren't united either, at least from what I understood. Its good to note that Ethiopia was never colonized, yet still had these characteristics that squandered it's chances of becoming a developed nation, despite it's strong history of centralization. Maybe it ends up being similar? It's also hard to see Eritrea ever uniting into the nation that it is today without one common enemy that created artificial borders, and another common enemy that helped solidify those borders by annexing it and subsequently committing some nasty atrocities. EDIT: I must note two things. Firstly, polities in the region we now know of today as Eritrea we're not static. They were subject to change. Secondly, in an alternate timeline where that region is never colonized by the Italians and is united into a nation parallel to Eritrea, it would be very difficult for that administration to destroy institutions of old and create new institutions that would turn out successful. There's only two nations I know of that did this: Turkey and Botswana. It's rare, very rare.

Lets not forget, Hadiya, Welega, Oromo, Harar, and Wolaita are all conquered land and all have a claim to some type of independence. Eritrea on the other hand doesn't have that issue, once their replace their awful government, they have a inclusive economic and political institutions to build on. Ethiopia is an empire, extractive in nature and can not stop.

Might just be a mistake on one end or the other. Had a form in my grandfathers PIF where he was engaged in a kamikaze attack against his ship in 1844. Sometimes we just get records that are wrong. Or, all the numbers are right, and they were still there afterwards. Could be any number of things. But, if you're an American, I'd suggest checking the National Archives. catalog.archives.gov/ Looking around I found my grandfathers entire service in WW2, the entire military careers on ancestors in the Civil War, and some immigration paperwork from when my family originally came over during the Revolution. Although I may agree with most of your analysis, there are a few points that need clarification. The main fighting force against the Derg was the Eritreans. The EPLF had effectively gained independence in 91 and formalized it in 93. The TPLF from tigray region led by zenawi had been close alias to the EPLF during the fight against the DERG. The EPLF had always had the idea of secession and independence. It would have been untenable for the TPLF to even attempt to deny the EPLF which was a way more significant fighting force from achieving a goal they fought 30 years for. Another point is how you tried to make the point of ethnic relationship between the Tigrinya in Eritrea and tigray people in Ethiopia. It may look very confusing to some people how two peoples that speak literally the same language and have the exact same culture can identify as separate groups. I personally think Eritreans developed a unique sense of national identity during the Italian colonization era. Also the people occupying present day Eritrea are people that voted in the referendum to be a part of the Eritrean nation. And those people have always occupied the entire coast. So in short yes our president is a dictator and no Ethiopia can't have our land

The more I listen to this orator the more I hear mistakes and errors. First and foremost the TPLF in 1991 never had the power nor wherewithal to tell or give the EPLF or Eritreans Independence. His error at 11:19 and at 22:41 of the video where he stated that the... "TPLF government decided to give Eritreans their independence?!!!" Factually and historically wrong!
The EPLF (Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front) helped the TPLF ( Tigrai Peoples Liberation Front) militarily and politically to defeat the Derg Regime in Addis Ababa. The EPLF in the 1970's militarily trained and politically educated the EPLF fighters in Nakfa to fight the Derg regime inside Ethiopia. When the Derg regime militarily over powered the TPLF in the battle for Shire in February 1989, the EPLF artillery support had to intervene to defeat the Derg and to capture the whole of Tigrai province. EPLF tanks marched in Addis Ababa in 1991 and liberated the Ethiopian capital from the Derg regime. Eritrean fighters fought and died in Ethiopia to get rid of the Derg Regime and helped the TPLF assume power in Addis in 1991. Clearly in 1991 EPLF had the upper power to do whatever it wanted in Addis after it defeated the Derg regime. EPLF could have stayed in power in Addis but it chose to hand power to TPLF because EPLF had a principal to uphold.
Even after defeating the most Powerful military in Africa at the time, the EPLF chose to legitimize Eritrean Independence through fair elections (referendum). In 1993, under the supervision of the UN Observer Mission (UNOVER) and international observers Eritreans overwhemingly, 99.8%, voted for independence! So Eritreans, after they were denied their independence
by the UN and the US in the 1950's, fought for thirty years, against all odds, and achieved their freedom and independence in 1991. No one country or nation gave Eritrea its independence! Eritreans earned their right of independence and freedom through their own strong will, sacrifice, struggle and determination!

This is insane. I have seen this video 3 times and the history flow is good until the speaker twisted the most important part of the history. After the independence, All the problems came and started in 1998 when the Ethiopian regime announced war against Eritrea. I don’t understand Why do you choose not to say something about this 3 stages of war that cost those countries their hope to development. This is the main reason that makes Eritrea poor and the national service extended for over 18 months and undefined just to protect the country from a big country next to it. With the help of UN Ethiopia couldn’t agree to the binding Algers agreement between those 2 countries.

Eh, it's hard to say... Colonialism sets up extractive institutions against the marginalized, no doubt. However, inclusive economic and political institutions heavily depend on pre-colonial outlook on institutions.
Prior to colonialism, Eritrea was divided into different polities: Some were an Islamic vassal state of notables to the Ottomans (Habesh Eyalet), others being centralized Christian kingdoms (Hamassien). Based on what I read so far in Lords of the Red Sea by D'Auvray, it looks like they were pretty extractive, especially the Christian polities that were similar to the Ethiopian Empire in political structure: feudal, absolutist, and militarized extractive institutions. Those polities weren't united either, at least from what I understood.
Its good to note that Ethiopia was never colonized, yet still had these characteristics that squandered it's chances of becoming a developed nation, despite it's strong history of centralization. Maybe it ends up being similar?
It's also hard to see Eritrea ever uniting into the nation that it is today without one common enemy that created artificial borders, and another common enemy that helped solidify those borders by annexing it and subsequently committing some nasty atrocities.
EDIT: I must note two things. Firstly, polities in the region we now know of today as Eritrea we're not static. They were subject to change. Secondly, in an alternate timeline where that region is never colonized by the Italians and is united into a nation parallel to Eritrea, it would be very difficult for that administration to destroy institutions of old and create new institutions that would turn out successful. There's only two nations I know of that did this: Turkey and Botswana. It's rare, very rare.

-Prior to colonialism, ALL of Africa was divided into different polities. However, the Christian polities that you speak of in "Hamassien" (Modern Day Eritrea) practiced a form of direct democracy, including written by laws and penalties that were followed. This was in complete contrast to the political structure of Feudal Ethiopia. The form of self government was inclusive to members of villages, often times sharing land within a village between families and preventing land ownership to outsiders.
-Although Ethiopia was not colonized it's formation as a nation happened in conjunction with the creation of the political entity of Eritrea. Menelik, our the father of modern day Ethiopia, created the borders through his expansion of the south, southwest and west, he never ruled over Eritrea or present day Eritrean land. He claimed Yohannes' kingdom after his death, but what is failed to be remembered is that the "Hamassien" was paying often in open conflict with Yohannes. It was a conquered land, never indigenous to the Tigray feudal order.
Beyond that, the historic and demographic realties are actually different. Eritrea has more of a harmonious ethic relationship without the historical grievous that Ethiopia harbors. Lets not forget, Hadiya, Welega, Oromo, Harar, and Wolaita are all conquered land and all have a claim to some type of independence. Eritrea on the other hand doesn't have that issue, once their replace their awful government, they have a inclusive economic and political institutions to build on. Ethiopia is an empire, extractive in nature and can not stop.

Although I may agree with most of your analysis, there are a few points that need clarification. The main fighting force against the Derg was the Eritreans. The EPLF had effectively gained independence in 91 and formalized it in 93. The TPLF from tigray region led by zenawi had been close alias to the EPLF during the fight against the DERG. The EPLF had always had the idea of secession and independence. It would have been untenable for the TPLF to even attempt to deny the EPLF which was a way more significant fighting force from achieving a goal they fought 30 years for. Another point is how you tried to make the point of ethnic relationship between the Tigrinya in Eritrea and tigray people in Ethiopia. It may look very confusing to some people how two peoples that speak literally the same language and have the exact same culture can identify as separate groups. I personally think Eritreans developed a unique sense of national identity during the Italian colonization era. Also the people occupying present day Eritrea are people that voted in the referendum to be a part of the Eritrean nation. And those people have always occupied the entire coast. So in short yes our president is a dictator and no Ethiopia can't have our land
The quote fits very well for Ethiopias Haile Selassie. He was a true symbol of resistance to fascism before and during the 2nd world war, but by the end of his reign he implemented terrible policies trying to assimilate the Eritreans into Ethiopia which was honestly what started the EPLF's brutal independence war and subsequent tyranny.
