it wasn't until I played World of Light that I realized how much I actually loved and really missed the Subspace Emissary. Sure, there were some mechanics in Brawl that were messed (looking at you, tripping), but I loved that you played out an entire story from start to finish in each character's (or team's) perspective, their part of the story, and then watch it all come together and unfold. World of Light had an amazing opening cutscene that had me expecting character interactions with dialogue... but then the only cutscene after the opening was almost eight hours later; when you defeat Galeem. I had heard that Sakurai cut back on cutscenes to avoid them getting leaked the way Subspace Emissary was, but I didn't think it'd be as bare as it was.
@@IREV00 The true ending is honestly the best part of Ultimate. It's actually like subspace tbh, starts out with platforming while killing enemies and dodging obstacles, then transitions into a boss rush where you get to choose which order to tackle the bosses, then you fight both Galeem and Dharkon at the same time.
Honestly the only reason I remembered World of Light existed was because they showed a boss from it in the Hero’s reveal trailer. For a game with “Ultimate” in the title, I’m surprised it would include something this awful and forgettable, especially when they outdid it in a game from over a decade ago.
I think they were so focused on balancing the characters and making each one of them fun and unique that they kinda just half assed it with the adventure mode. This game really is the best in the series in terms of everything else, so my best guess is that it was rushed.
@@IREV00 well, the best for battle at least, but nothing from it's side content is fun, no trophys, the spirits can't have a different background like the stickers, the characters don't have custom moves, it doesn't have minigames. It's all very bland
I think I had this tenacious itch to see if there was another cool cutscene at the end of the game. I had a feeling there wouldn't be any other notable cutscenes, however the game just went on and on and on. That was insane. The way they introduce Dharkon and then ask you to fight both Galeem and Dharkon, it goes on forever. But somehow, I wasn't really bothered. There was something cool about progressing through the Dharkon section where they have this Castlevania inspired map with mostly Castlevania inspired spirits, and a Zelda focused map with entirely Zelda focused spirits. And the final map has this interesting tug and pull between the light and dark sides, and you can get three different endings at that part too. The final cutscenes are all very weird and extremely anti-climactic, it's only carried by how cool the final battle is, since it has that side scrolling Subspace feel to it and you have to battle both Galeem and Dharkon at the same time and can't afford to waste time, otherwise you get one of the bad endings. The best ending is just the spirits flying into the sky, which is a weirdly bleak way to end a story mode in a party fighting game.
People are going to hate me But I love spirits so much that I would open up the game, check my spirits, and leave. I got every spirits and everyone of them up to level 99.
@@verdar3662 I can agree that spirits are a nice addition and concept, plus are plenty fun to collect. But the problem is the execution of how you get them. As a vast majority of fights end up lost in extremes of either being ridiculously easy or absolute bullshit. The Enderman spirit I feel is the perfect example of this. You face two, large Endermen that have insane speed, with an Abra that spawns in the beginning. I’ll definitely admit that I’m nowhere near the best smash player but it was infuriating to attempt to get it. Since you needed to be lucky and hope that their .001 second reaction time screws up and they make a mistake. Otherwise you will just die again and again. And the worst part is finally beating it, and your reward? A debuff that makes you take more damage from water attacks.
Well, I think the fact that brawl took quite a long time to make was what made subspace possible. The development cycle between smash 4 and ultimate is quite small compared to the one between melee and brawl. Add the "everyone is here" concept, all the stages remade and the dlc fighters (which include steve who took a fucking long time) and it's understandable that creating lots of cutscenes for world of light might have been impossible. The map itself is actually really cool and has a ton of neat references to the characters' past (the maze being pacman's for example) so I just enjoyed the time I had and peaced out when I got permanently lost.
I just wanna say I was really late to the smash bros train like 3 years late to it but I just got a switch and I picked up the main great titles including smash bros and it’s my second smash game next to smash melee and I’m in love with the game rather addicted to it, I truly never thought I could like a fighter so much
It might've been just spirit battles (along with some beautiful maps to explore, references galore, and epic boss fights), but I still enjoyed it so much for some reason.
As much as I love and respect Sakurai, I’ve always though the “leaked cutscenes” think was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. You’d rather take them away from those who want to see them than just add them. The whole cutscenes as a reward still works with all the people who go out of their way to avoid them and people who don’t use the internet and anyone who spoils them for themselves, that’s their fault. Also what game doesn’t get its cutscenes leaked these days, we lost out on a chance for a LEGENDARY story of all these characters coming together in Ultimate!
World of Light is okay. At least we got better single players content than Trash 4. I mean smash 4 😳😳 I think I even enjoyed Melee and 64 more when it comes to single player.
What I will say regarding WOL is that there are a bunch of very cool spirit fights. However, some of them do not walk the fine line between fair and bullshit and there are a few (thankfully ONLY A FEW) that had me almost tearing my hair out because of how unbalanced they were. Most of them are fairly easy and the average player will breeze through them. I do like though that they did make an effort to make each Spirit fight unique on the most part but there are a bunch of them which are very similar (the amount of times I had to fight stamina battles with a jacked up Ganondorf are too many). That aside, WOL does feature a great challenge at the end of the game once you've conquered both light and dark worlds which feels more like what Subspace Emissary was like. The spirits as a whole are a great concept and an opportunity to have battles with characters as if they were in the game albeit using an established fighter on the roster or a Mii Fighter. The Boss fights are probably the best part of it because the boss fights are actually good. WOL brings back a few that appeared in Subspace plus a bunch of new bosses from various different franchises. However I do agree that Subspace Emissary does take the cake for best Adventure Mode in the Smash bros. series. We really should've got something similar to Subspace instead.
most battles just kinda happen I saw a fight where it said "bring your best team" or something and I beat it in a couple of seconds without taking damage on hard mode
It´s garbage... The only reason I finished this mode (which takes over 20 hours btw) is to change the music in the menu. So if you dont care about that, dont waste your time. Its long, some fights are just upstraight unfair, its has no story, and its repetitive as it can be, its worthless (unless you want to customize the menu music)
I hate that they only did the intro cutscene as a marketing tool, they introduce "World of light" with the only "story" of this story mode.
It sucks.
But for real it’s very bland and it I really only beat it so I could of gotten the option the adjust the music frequency.

Then we get Project M removing all those flaws in Brawl and giving us better movement and gameplay while still having subspace.
Atleast playing Master Hand was cool.
The bosses of World of Light was a very cool part of it. Especially right at the finale.
I didn't even know it had bosses. Were they the ones used in Classic Mode or were they unique?
@@IREV00 Classic mode of course, recycled conted is a key feature of Smash.

Awful? In what way was it awful? World of light was exactly what it needed to be, stop complaining about it being something it’s not
The bosses are literally amazing but everything is about sub-par

As someone who 100% world of light, I enjoyed it a lot. Maybe it’s because I didn’t play brawl at all but hey i just found it fun.

WOL is ass.
I am replaying this mode and done 50% in one day
also the second playthrough with all the upgrades is a joke

Dont mind me just a world of light completionist
But why tho
I just find the spirit battles to be fun
That's fair, but I think Spirit Board works a lot better for that.
I like traversing the hub world even if its rather simplistic. I enjoy the refrences and slowly unlocking the characters and fighting the bosses.

Brawl has one of the best intros and themes in gaming history. World of light's theme is terrible, the intro is amazing though.

I personally love it but to each their own
