Glad to hear it, as a Mac user in a weird situation with my switch (I lost the joy cons) I haven't been able to try it out and in spite of the hate I really like the look of it and want to give it a try! Hard part is the points being brought up certainly aren't wrong that Sega is seriously inconsistent and my mind is blown they don't allow the developers to ever have enough time to fully finish a game but idk some part of me can't help but have a interest in so many Sonic titles in spite of it. I suppose Im part of what allows them to get away with unfinished games but idk. They have amazing ideas and even solid mechanics and yet still seem to not quite be what the fans what. But im stuck a fan for life I suppose. It really brought me joy to read a father and son are enjoying these new titles, that's just amazing and im happy the next generation may get to enjoy Sonic the way I do! Hope you've shown him the Adventure games if not you totally should! The open world of Sonic Adventure DX blew my mind as a kid playing on my Wii, sadly not multiplayer (though modders have to some degree fixed that) but a 10 year old me loved those games. Sorry for my rant but just ecstatic to hear y'all are enjoying Sonic
We could have had a hand-drawn style but an interview, when asked about it, they said that they were considering it at first, but opted for 3D because they thought people would think that would look better, I remember hearing this somewhere to take this with a grain of salt because I don't remember the source.
It was such an idiotic idea for sega to release this game in the very same week as mario wonder. Like that’s the greatest competition a 2d platformer will ever face, it’s gonna be comepletely overshadowed. Should’ve delayed the release by a few weeks or a month
Idk. I bought Sonic Superstar. Looked more appealing to me. Mario Wonder is another copy and paste of its "New 2D" series with the same repetitive music.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii deliberately has levels that are made with that camera system in mind, while Sonic typically has levels that require you to go up and down, not just left and right. Whenever you had to go up and down in NSMBW, it would usually be in a dedicated section where the level would be designed in such a way, therefore letting them lock the camera like that. Maybe its limiting to some degree, but I think its an important consideration they never made when thinking about this new camera system. Good video bud.
Time attack actually made me go back and replay this game pretty often, I can pick a random stage, skip the boss, turn on Spotify (cause superstars music is pretty mid), and just have fun running through the stage with all the classic physics I love. But a mode so simple isn't going to justify the $60 price tag
I'm always baffled to find these gems of videos recommended to me only to find the likes and comments so desolate this was a great video and shows your strength as a content creator, hope you continue to grow and prosper!
I couldn't be happier seeing your success REV. It makes me so happy seeing your work get so much attention! And the video was a great insight about sonic superstars. I dont play too much sonic so I dont have a ton to add, but i enjoyed listening to what you had to say!
9:44 Actually the water power up has another use. It prevents you from getting crushed which makes going through press factory zone a much easier time. Also the emerald powers do refill once you go through a checkpoint and you can revisit the same checkpoint again if you want experiment more with the power ups to refill it
Wow I had no idea the water powerup worked like that. I don't remember ever getting crushed in this game honestly but it's nice to know there's at least some other use at play there. Thanks for letting me know.
It could be just me but I actually enjoyed Superstars. I admit it was not as fun and replayable as Mania, but it’s definitely far better than entries like Sonic 4. The bosses I enjoyed spamming the emerald powers with
Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?!!!!! You think this ATROCITY is BETTER than Sonic 4?!!!!!! I DON’T THINK SO!!!! I think this game is the ABSOLUTE WORST 2D Sonic game EVER MADE!!!!!!
Literally a good option they could have done wad the Kirby star allies route granted I'm not the biggest fan of that game but what it could do is just if a person goes off screen it just teleports the off screen player to player one and also only have the camera follow player one
Terrible bosses aside, my biggest issue with Superstar comes from the level designs & co-op. The first halve of the zone started off good. But once we get into Lagoon City, things have gotten worst. So much of stop & go, pressing switch, pushing that, doing this, basically anything that makes you do things rather than rewarding with speed. They also add too many gimmicks in each levels that are hit & miss and can get pretty obnoxious too. The camera gets to close to Sonic that anything hits you off screen. The Emeralds Power; while cool idea in theory, are very underwhelming and the game lacks any polished. And than there's the co-op; which is supposed to be the games main selling point. But it is by far the worst co-op of any video game I've seen. Even the New Super Mario Bros games has co-op that are better than this. This is a shame really. This game has so much potential and could've been an great game. But what we got is an average game at best and unplayable at worst.
What you described for "Sonic Superstars" is the true definition of quantity over quality. Critically speaking, it's actually deeply mediocre at its core (5.5/10). On a personal level, it's mediocre at best for me (5/10).
I played this game and literally just gave up on the last eggman boss not because it’s hard- I’ve beaten much harder things- but because it was unfun and frustrating. Oh and the game literally crashed during a cutscene.
Back in 2017, Sonic Mania sold 1 million copies, which was considered a great success for Sega. Sonic Superstars 1 year anniversary is coming next month and it has sold over 4.3 million copies. Looking at these numbers, I personally would not use the word "fail", as shown on the thumbnail for this video.
Where did you find these numbers, I never saw any numbers about this game sales no matter how much I search Also Sega stopped sharing mania 5:30 sales after the first year
The part that gets me about the "Mania Team" not being on board on this game, is the fact that SEGA brought back quite possibly the only unnecessary member of that team: Tee Lopes. Now don't get me wrong, the guy makes some good music. But that's about it: "Good". SEGA could have fished for true in-house talent -- which they do have -- and came up with so truly banger music of mythical proportions. Heck, those guys got Naoto Oshima back; get Yuzu Koshiro to unite with Fumie Kumatani and the Unleashed music team -- now THAT would have been truly legendary. But no: We're left to hum to the sounds of some derivative Tee Lopes stuff, and crappy Sonic 4-like chiptune music. Severely disappointing.
Great vid as usual Rev! I got this game on Christmas. I didn't really pay attention to the press about it because frankly I was more excited for Mario Wonder. However, I really loved Mania so I figured if 3D Sonic is gonna keep disappointing me, at least some 2D games will come out I will at least like. Despite that, I had a miserable time playing Superstars. When it's not boring, it felt frustrating with it's bosses and some of it's later levels. Which is a shame too because I wanna like Sonic again and I've liked a bunch of the older games but it just seems like it gets harder and harder to like Sonic by the game. I feel like one day a good Sonic game will come out again but I feel like it's gonna be a real long time before that happens. It feels clear that Sonic is just their cash cow now with no regard of quality (which to an extent was always the case given how all Sonic games are rushed but it's felt very apparent as of late). Anyways great video as always, I always look forward to your uploads and they always brighten my day!
Thank you as usual Rylee! You’ve captured my thoughts exactly. Despite claiming they slowed down game releases to increase quality, all these titles have still come out as rushed messes. At least back in the day there was a sonic game every year which increased the likelihood of a good game; now we wait ages for pure mediocrity. And as long as people still defend it, it’ll keep on happening. Because it’s Sonic.

@@Drslouchy1469 shout out to the both of you. it’s better not to listen to the internet and form your own opinion. i loved Shadow 05 so much as a kid, i was surprised to find out a couple years later that people hated it
I can't speak for everyone who didn't buy this game. But the reason why i didn't get it was because The Final Horizon was a terrible, frustrating, rage-quit inducing dumpster fire that was paradoxically worse than the base Frontiers' ending. It was really bad and unironically made me rethink why I was fan of the franchise to begin with... But I guess I'm the sucker because I'm buying Shadow Generations in spite of that. Maybe I'll grab Superstars one day if it goes on deep discount on Steam, but never at full price.
"This game rather regurgitade thd same the design from over 30 years" Gee it's almost like this is supposed to follow the style of gsmeplay from over 30 years that has proven to be succsesfull in Mania. What a "nothing" complaint
I enjoyed this one. The level designs could be more memorable, but I think it's overall better than the classic trilogy and even Mania. I'm impressed they got the physics close to the Genesis games, but it's not perfect, as each character feels heavier to play, but it's still fun. I wish the zones were more original, but they're still a step up from before. I wonder what's next, a modern 2D Sonic game?
i like it. idk I really thought it was a blast and it kinda felt like one of those moments when the fanbase kinda woulda hated it no matter what because it wasnt exactly sonic generations in terms of budget and quality when this was obviously not a mainline title
I don’t actually mind this game since I often play games by myself But most of the issues you listed aren’t really that big or noticeable You should have listed the bosses in this game
All you have to do to activate an emerald power is flick the right stick in the corresponding direction and press X. Very quick and snappy once you remember where they are
10:20 just a correction, every single one of the emerald powers CAN BE USED MULTIPE TIMES,they refresh whenever you get through a checkpoint. They even refresh mid usage so in fact these emerald powers can be very spammable
The game just sucks for me on every aspect: Level design is bland, bosses are boring, take forever and have awful music, the final bosses are hard af for the wrong reason, as if it was just never playtested kinda bad, the powers are situational or just “1 free boss hit” kinda deal, the ost is inconsistent, Tee being awesome and Sunoe being his Sonic 4 self, the story is meh, the special stages are meh, nothing clicked for me NOTHING, even Sonic 4 clicked a bit with me
I think it's honestly too soon to call this game a "failure," because it hasn't even been out a year, and in fairness like many Sonic games there are many fans that like it, despite it having some hate or issues. I actually enjoyed it despite it's faults.
I'm pretty sure Mario odyssey's multiplayer is better than this Mario Odyssey which is so bad at multiplayer that it would be hard for you to play the game
I think Superstars is really good game when you get into the time trails. Just play the time trial mode or immediately quit Trip’s levels right before the boss.
Level design was subpar. Level music was bad. Trip's "hard mode" story was horrible with the enemy placement. Chaos emerald special stages were atrocious. Trip's super form controlled terribly. Boss battles were atrocious...Like why are you making people wait to attack a boss in a game series that's supposed to be about speed. The power were super cool, but most of them useless and I only found myself using 3 of them consistently.
Wait, so the multiplayer sucks and it's better to play in Singleplayer? I'm actually interested in checking this out now. I though this would be another New Super Mario Bros Situation, where playing alone kinda sucks, because everything is designed around having up to 4 players on screen.
I like the game, but it feels too generic in terms of just being “sonic 3 and knuckles again”. Sonic Mania I’m fine with since it was kind of just back to basics. The co-op emphasis needs to be scrapped and I think it’s what killed the game because it made the bosses agonizing due to the fact it would run over bosses if they didn’t give the bosses super long recovery periods. It’s a shame because I do enjoy the levels and the character exclusive levels are by far the best in the game. A 2D Sonic game with fully original levels and non-agonizing boss battles can be a 9/10 with good level design.
Superstars is one of those games where its either really overhated or overpraised The game feels like a budget game, something made to satisfy people til the next game, problem is, it's a 60 dollar game with the scummiest kind of cosmetic system ever (Kroger exclusive comic skins and Ihop Amy) The game itself is fine with some very frustrating stuff in it but man it had potenial to be way better
As someone who has not bought the game I can confirm that it looks overpriced. I'd only buy Superstars if it were on sale for $20 or $25 dollars and even then I'd be hesitant.
Idk why it was so hard to jusy have the multiplayer be split screen and a race. Sonic games are about speed, and making it a race where u can jump on or spindash through ur opponents to mess then up would be fun! Even cooler, if someone finds a special ring, then only they go through it and then only they can get the chaos emerald power, but if u get all 7 then everyone can go super bc thats just... More fun. This way it incenticizes replays with friends yo see if u can beat them and also see who gets certain powers. That way sections that require water are just short cuts, where everyone else who didn't get it has to take thw slow route. That only took me like 2 minutes to think of, idk how a team of developers who made this game in maybe 3 years never thought of it. It just sounds more fun and makes multiplayer more seamless
I picked it up on sale for my Steam Deck and enjoyed it enough to play through and unlock Trip. I never used the powers or multiplayer, so I can see I didn’t play it “properly” and how it would be infuriating paying full price expecting it to live up to the advertising.
I think I know the reason why the camera doesn't just follow the person in front like in the New Super Mario Bros games:loops and set pieces. In a 2D Mario game, forward is always one of two directions: right or up. It's easy for the game go figure out who's in the lead by just checking who's further to the right or who's higher up on the screen. Simple. But with Sonic, Sometimes right isn't forward. A good speedy section of a level will send the player in just about every direction. It's all forward, but it's not all right or up. I can definitely see why the game struggles to keep track of who is in front. I'm not saying that it isn't a problemi just understood why it is the way that it is. Why does Sonic always have the 😮 expression on his face? Where's the side smirk that he's had since Sonic Unleashed? (I know that was modern Sonic, but the technique in 3D started there)
I like to write my own sonic games. Sonic 4 & knuckles, mecha sonic n metal sonic revive n rush angel island and take the master emerald back to little big planet ‘reviving R2’ sonic must gain time stones to travel back in time before emerald snatched and stop them 😂
Let me save you sometime. The game isn’t bad, it’s just not sonic mania, so people were mad about it. I have the game I’m having fun and I’ll admit yes it’s not on the same level as sonic mania and there’s some bugs here and there but if you like classic sonic you’ll like this game
Just completed it with my 8 YO son. We had a blast. The camera was difficult to follow every now and again but ot was an overall great experience.

I don’t actually mind this game since I often play games by myself
But most of the issues you listed aren’t really that big or noticeable
You should have listed the bosses in this game

All you have to do to activate an emerald power is flick the right stick in the corresponding direction and press X. Very quick and snappy once you remember where they are

16:20 SONG NAME???????????????????? BANGER????????????????????????????????
Speed Jungle Zone Act Sonic :-)
I will never understand the interms of art style I don't know why they don't do something like wario land shake it did
I hear some people say its the love child of Sonic CD and Sonic 4
2 MONTHS LATE SQUAD WHERE YOU AT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
10:20 just a correction, every single one of the emerald powers CAN BE USED MULTIPE TIMES,they refresh whenever you get through a checkpoint. They even refresh mid usage so in fact these emerald powers can be very spammable
Reminds me of Knuckles Chaotix.

I didn't mess with the multiplayer much but I loved Superstars
Agreed and good for you
Superstars feels like what Sonic 4 should have been.
It's ok even though I have not played it before. 6/10
I'm pretty sure Mario odyssey's multiplayer is better than this Mario Odyssey which is so bad at multiplayer that it would be hard for you to play the game
Super Mario Wonder is the objectively BETTER game.
Im a Sonic fan and its still impossible to not agree
Not objectively
No. It also sucks. They both suck.
Because i eat too much 😭
I like the game
Can’t believe bro died in a car accident in Australia 😢😢💀💀
What??? the guy who runs this channel???
@@IttyBitty412 I can't find any confirmation on that... I have no Idea if there's any truth to this..
STOP!
This aged like milk.
@@JoseGregorioValeroVillarroel What?
I think Superstars is really good game when you get into the time trails. Just play the time trial mode or immediately quit Trip’s levels right before the boss.
Agreed
I haven't finished playing this game.🤦🏾♀️
sonic colors and sonic superstars fighting over the "legitimately good game that sonic fans will actually try to convince you is bad" award
It’s ridiculous.
THATS WHAT IM SAYING I have legit no idea why people dunk on this game so much it literally gave us trip the sungazer
BASED
You called Mega Man 11 "Mega Man 12"
Level design was subpar.

Sonic 4 is Sonic Advance really
Wait, so the multiplayer sucks and it's better to play in Singleplayer? I'm actually interested in checking this out now. I though this would be another New Super Mario Bros Situation, where playing alone kinda sucks, because everything is designed around having up to 4 players on screen.
The game is mostly pleasant but the boss fights are uselessly long and many parts of the story are badly told (especially for the true final boss).
This game is just ok. I think its better than Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and sonic 4
$60 for mid tbh.
Superstars is one of those games where its either really overhated or overpraised
The game feels like a budget game, something made to satisfy people til the next game, problem is, it's a 60 dollar game with the scummiest kind of cosmetic system ever (Kroger exclusive comic skins and Ihop Amy)
The game itself is fine with some very frustrating stuff in it but man it had potenial to be way better
Thoughts on the Sonic X Shadow Generations gameplay?
I try to avoid trailers for games I know I'm gonna play. I will definitely make a video on it when it comes out though. Thanks for the question!
I loved it
I think I know the reason why the camera doesn't just follow the person in front like in the New Super Mario Bros games:loops and set pieces.
(I know that was modern Sonic, but the technique in 3D started there)
Looks more fun than shadow generations
EGORAPTOR LIKED THIS VIDEO !
The camera follows the person who has progressed farther. It’s so easy to understand
Arzest is a terrible developer. The fact that Nintendo couldn't get a good game out them is very telling.
Idk man I loved the game. People are just really picky and never happy.
I like to write my own sonic games. Sonic 4 & knuckles, mecha sonic n metal sonic revive n rush angel island and take the master emerald back to little big planet ‘reviving R2’ sonic must gain time stones to travel back in time before emerald snatched and stop them 😂
That sounds great
10:40 I'll say it if no one else will .... 06 did it better.
Superstars didn't fail....
super stars?... more like...... Stupid Stars!
A good platformer is always single player. Lesson learned three decades ago. You guys hungry for online and multiplayer never had real friends.
It did sold 2 million copies did better than Sonic Lost World at least
Not saying much lost world was on a dead console for 2 years
Let me save you sometime. The game isn’t bad, it’s just not sonic mania, so people were mad about it. I have the game I’m having fun and I’ll admit yes it’s not on the same level as sonic mania and there’s some bugs here and there but if you like classic sonic you’ll like this game
dude this game is hard to break...those bugs barely happens i swear during my own gameplay i only encountered like 1 bug.
Sonk Sloperstars
I wasted 60plus on this garbage
Sonic Superstars gets my rating of a 7.5/10. Better than Sonic 4, but not as good as Sonic Mania
Because Sega is stupid. No fixes and locked skins.
