This takes me back to the good old days with Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Master System, and also Sonic 2 on the Master System as well. SO HAPPY that we've now got a successor to those good old games. I think it's fair to say that we've been crying out for another 2D Sonic game for ages, and now here it is. Bought it 2 days ago, and absolutely LOVE IT.
My favorite was always Sonic 3 & Knuckles! I remember being a Genesis with our van as a family - and it came with Sonic & Knuckles. Eventually, we got all the Sonic games and I found how Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles paired together as one game - with the Sonic 3 levels first and then continued with the Sonic & Knuckles levels - and I always liked playing as Knuckles (even regular S&K) because of his climbing ability.
I’m so glad there are at least some people like yourself giving this game the praise it deserves. I am just an hour in and so far no complaints! I agree with everything you said and I think the IGN review is such a joke, it’s laughable.
Thank you! That IGN review was awful. Not because of the rating of the game, but how they spoke about the game. You can tell the person has little experience with the original Sonic games. They don’t understand the basic structures and fundamentals of the game.
Supposedly 2.5D sir lmao. I guess that's accurate for the switch version. Got it for the switch lite and it runs pretty well and solid frame rate is dope. Feels like a little bit better version of a Sonic version of Mario u deluxe which I had calculated would be the case. I don't see how anyone could own this one PlayStation even though it looks better because Sonic in this form is a must on the go.

Smart decision. As a multi platform game, Sonic Superstars like all multi platform games will likely go on sale sooner. First party Nintendo games' prices remain in the $ 50 plus region for very long until a new sequel comes out.

what i like in sonic games vs other platformers was that it was always a bit different.. i remember sliding those halfpipes on a borrowed master system back in mid 90s and thinking wow, this is different. game was just silly fast paced for its time and not something i was used to coming from pc titles. this will be a nice throw back.

This looks like the exact sonic game we've been missing. The way Sonic Mania was. But I love the art style here. This was the perfect way to go classic and modern.
I think the big reviewers like IGN have it wrong. This is one of the best sonic games I've played in recent memory. If your a sonic fan don't pass this up. If you haven't played sonic I feel this is the title to jump into. Maybe someone expecting something wildly different will be disappointed but I'm hooked.
Ironic that Amy is the easy character. In Sonic Advance she was the hard character. She had some extra reach and moment options, but she paid for it by having manual attacks and no spin dash.
She wasn't as difficult to use in Sonic Advance 2 but she was still harder than Sonic to use because she didn't have his jumping airdash. Cream was the easy character though, like insanely easy haha
This shows that Arzest can make a solid game! I'm really happy that Naoto Ohshima is back in the Sonic series, but I would like for Sega to make a new Modern 2-D game in the style of the Advance series in the future! I'm excited to play Sonic Superstars, and I'm very happy to see Sonic in a good place!
@ThatsJustLikeYourOpinionMan I respectfully disagree. I'm having a lot of fun exploring through the levels with the multiple pathways that they have. I like the game's art style, the character animation is really good, and I really feel like they nailed the controls. It honestly feels just as nice to move around in Superstars as it does in Mania! However, the things I don't really like about it are that I feel that the medals could've been used for more things outside of multiplayer. The stuff in the digital deluxe version should've been available in the base game as unlockables. The concept art and character skins could've given more ways to use the medals, and the sound test could be unlocked through playing the game instead of making us pay more money. The game is already $60. Another thing I don't like is the inconsistent soundtrack. I love Jun Senoue's music in the 3-D games, but he really should sit out on the 2-D games because, oh man, his contributions are really bland when he's on his own in this game. I really don't understand why he feels the need to restrict himself with Genesis-style instrumentation in the 2-D games, and the main boss themes are some of the most uninteresting tunes I've ever heard in a Sonic game with how repetitive they are. It's a darn shame because a lot of the music outside of it is still some great stuff. Heck, even when Jun collaborates with Tee Lopes and brings out his guitar, it sounds much better! I'm having a lot of fun playing Sonic Superstars, and in my personal opinion, it's a solid, good game. But I do admit it has a few decently sized flaws that bring the experience down a bit for me.

This game is stunning. My only issue is how different sonic feels in regards to movement. Everything feels support laggy. I set controller sensitivity in game settings to 10 and it just doesn’t quite feel right for some reason. Getting used to it but just off. :/
I ended up returning it. Microsoft gave me a full refund which was appreciated! I just couldn’t get passed how the characters handled picking up speed and even jumping felt delayed. Beautiful game though and I did like the level design from what I played.

Bought the game today for the Xbox Series X. The graphics are awesome on it. I was debating on whether to buy it for the PS5, Xbox Series X, or the Switch earlier.

Different Characters have different stories and level changes THIS PART EXACTLY WILL MAKE ME REPLAY AND USE OTHER CHARACTERS I never bothered using other characters in past games except Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 so this is great news

most of the time with sonic games I'm there for the story not the gameplay since I usually expect the gameplay to be subpar at best, classic games are the only kind where I'll care about the gameplay first modern is where I care more about the story
I started playing sonic the hedgehog on the Sega master system 1. This was when Alex the kidd was segas mascot and came built into the system itself. Then the master system 2 arrived with sonic the hedgehog built into the system, followed up with Sonic 2 and sonic chaos then I got the sega mega drive (UK) with sonic the hedgehog 1 2 sonic pinball and sonic 3 followed by sonic and knuckles. Also had the Sega game gear with sonic triple threat ,sonic 1& 2 . Back when the Sega/Nintendo wars were all we had haha
For the new Sonic and the new Mario art design it went from a pixel art that looks as pleasing to the eye for a kid to an adult to a kids only care bear feel with absolutely nothing edgy to look at that will not help older gamer to develop a nostalgia for it.
I’m stoked for this release! It’s everything an old Sonic fan wants! I think SEGA should release a special box art that makes it look like a Genesis cart.
Graphically switch is probably/most likely worse, but from what footage I’ve seen it isn’t terrible, also performance wise it looks to be about the same I think (though it’s been a while since I’ve seen gameplay)
The performance from what I seen on switch looks pretty much the same as the PS5/Xbox ver as well as the graphics. The only difference graphically is that the switch ver looks slightly less detailed, but overall looks pretty decent compared to it's pS5 and Xbox counterpart
Yes! And with that we also get the same Nintendo vs Sega situation again. "Super Mario Bros. Wonder" is probably the better game but "Sonic Superstars" is released on basically everything. So which game will sell the most? It should be Mario, right?
Sonic Tuesday is here and I'm loving it...........I think this game is a solid 8.5-9, although I see many of the usual outlets are still giving Sonic games a tough time. The same sites will be gushing on Friday when Mario comes out of course. Nice review........this is a solid sonic game. Really happy with where Sonic is right now......
I’m really enjoying it. I don’t care for the special levels. That’s the only part I don’t care for. Otherwise the game is fun and the soundtrack is awesome!
We have Alex Kidd, Crash trilogy, Sonic 2D, 3D Mario, New Super Mario and Spiro remakes/ collection remasters alongside Sonic ALL stars, Crash 4, Mario Odissey and Mario Wonder ALL in one console. How amazing is that? Switch is the platformer king we ALL wanted in the 90's.
Im almost more curious to see what modders will do with this as time goes by ... Recreate the og Sonic trilogy maybe? Or even just applying better versions of the music which isn't bad but isn't good
I want superstars but with spider man coming next week I am gonna pass. I’m also not gonna be fooled like last year when I bought frontiers at launch then a week later it’s on sale for 39.99 till the end of the year.
Not sure this will be read but if Sega ever reaches out to you again, tell them they are on the right track with games like these. Sonic works as a mascot platformer and not a furries friendship sim. Also ask them to bring back some of the non coomer favorites as dlc…mighty and ray had some pretty cool gameplay mechanics that were unique, balanced and fun. In summation, keep making games for the sega fans and stop seeking approval from the “alt fanbase” who fantasize about cream the rabbit or sonic taking his shoes off.
I had a hard time deciding switch or ps5 version. I can’t find anything about 120 fps or dualsense support so I went with the switch and it holds up real good on a tv and handheld , the game just looks good!
Retract my previous complaints. Xbox released a day one patch late so I played the game a bit before that. Once that came out, it addressed many of my concerns. Really enjoying the game.
I’m a Sonic kid, but have felt a bit burned out. Didn’t really have any interest in the open world game and was gonna skip this one too, but after seeing your review I’ll check this one it out eventually.
I'll probably get it when it goes on sale in the eShop and have fun with it, but for now I have Sonic Mania that I've barely touched. Too many other games taking up my limited game time.
Switch version having a noticeable graphics downgrade deterred me from getting it. Hopefully there will be a next-gen patch. I play Sonic Frontiers on Switch and PC with mods, though.
I was born in 88 and grew up with a genesis, I love 2d sonic games. But honestly I wish this was a full 2d game like sonic mania was, I just don't like this 2.5D look reminds me of sonic 4. But I will give it a try and hope for the best

Flying Battery Zone and the OG Ice Cap Zone themes are number two and three of my top Sonic tracks respectively after Chemical Plant.
To me this game feels like a big cocktail mix of Triple Trouble, Sonic CD and Sonic 2 and I'm all for it.

Yeah Amy is usually the hard mode, even in most rom hacks. Same with Ray

I'm not a hater. I'm a huge Sonic fan. For 30 years. I grew up with the Genesis. This game is a major step backwards in basically every way to Mania.

There are unlockable Metal Sonic parts for the battle mode.
But those are on lockable with coins you get in stages

I'm a Sonic fan and have been since I can remember, grew up playing the Master System and Megadrive games. Definitely will get this at some point! 😊👍
I wanna pick this up for the SWITCH but I am worried that the performance compared to PS5/Xbox will be different. Any difference graphically?
Graphically switch is probably/most likely worse, but from what footage I’ve seen it isn’t terrible, also performance wise it looks to be about the same I think (though it’s been a while since I’ve seen gameplay)
The performance from what I seen on switch looks pretty much the same as the PS5/Xbox ver as well as the graphics. The only difference graphically is that the switch ver looks slightly less detailed, but overall looks pretty decent compared to it's pS5 and Xbox counterpart

It looks great on an OLED and portability makes up for anything lost which wouldn't be much IMO. It might also depend on how fast you play.

Yes! And with that we also get the same Nintendo vs Sega situation again. "Super Mario Bros. Wonder" is probably the better game but "Sonic Superstars" is released on basically everything. So which game will sell the most? It should be Mario, right?
Best Sonic game I have played since Sonic Maniac. This game is just as good as Sonic Maniac. Fantastic game by all means.
I got it today. Beat the first two acts. It's a beautiful, fun game so far.
Sonic Tuesday is here and I'm loving it...........I think this game is a solid 8.5-9, although I see many of the usual outlets are still giving Sonic games a tough time. The same sites will be gushing on Friday when Mario comes out of course. Nice review........this is a solid sonic game. Really happy with where Sonic is right now......
Having played it, i can see why it got a 76. Its rather glitchy (as all games seem to be these days)

I’m really enjoying it. I don’t care for the special levels. That’s the only part I don’t care for. Otherwise the game is fun and the soundtrack is awesome!

I got this game recently and played through most of it today. It’s really good. I paid $30, I wouldn’t pay more than that
We have Alex Kidd, Crash trilogy, Sonic 2D, 3D Mario, New Super Mario and Spiro remakes/ collection remasters alongside Sonic ALL stars, Crash 4, Mario Odissey and Mario Wonder ALL in one console. How amazing is that? Switch is the platformer king we ALL wanted in the 90's.
Im almost more curious to see what modders will do with this as time goes by ... Recreate the og Sonic trilogy maybe? Or even just applying better versions of the music which isn't bad but isn't good

Not sure this will be read but if Sega ever reaches out to you again, tell them they are on the right track with games like these.
Sonic works as a mascot platformer and not a furries friendship sim.
Also ask them to bring back some of the non coomer favorites as dlc…mighty and ray had some pretty cool gameplay mechanics that were unique, balanced and fun.
In summation, keep making games for the sega fans and stop seeking approval from the “alt fanbase” who fantasize about cream the rabbit or sonic taking his shoes off.

I had a hard time deciding switch or ps5 version. I can’t find anything about 120 fps or dualsense support so I went with the switch and it holds up real good on a tv and handheld , the game just looks good!

Retract my previous complaints. Xbox released a day one patch late so I played the game a bit before that. Once that came out, it addressed many of my concerns. Really enjoying the game.

Switch version having a noticeable graphics downgrade deterred me from getting it. Hopefully there will be a next-gen patch. I play Sonic Frontiers on Switch and PC with mods, though.
I was born in 88 and grew up with a genesis, I love 2d sonic games. But honestly I wish this was a full 2d game like sonic mania was, I just don't like this 2.5D look reminds me of sonic 4. But I will give it a try and hope for the best
