Its so weird to think that SEGA manages to look at Sonic, their most famous series, and just not really give a shit about it all that much.
The series has never sold very well in Japan, so since Japanese people can be very xenophobic and SEGA is run by old men, it's a "who cares the games will still sell and even if they suck no one who MATTERS will play them" situation. Until Frontiers which sold like crazy everywhere and is why the Sonic Generations remaster is getting a whole new Shadow chunk.
I’m amazed Arzest still gets hired for anything.

I think they needed to work more on this game, the majority of the problems I'm seeing in the game is that it isn't polished enough. They really need to stop rushing the polishing stage of development
I feel like I've heard this about a Sonic game before... a thousand times. orz
@@dawk7 yes, unfortunatelly its not a new problem, and it always screws the game over. I don't know why SEGA keeps rushing their developers. Its this attitude that made so many talented people leave SEGA for Nintendo
honestly, I think that's my biggest issue with a lot of Sonic games. The ideas themselves aren't bad, I'd say in most games they've made I can see how they could be really fun. But something about it usually turns out to be a huge letdown. I bought Frontiers a while after it came out and while I can see why people like it, I also think that game is missing a ton of polish.
It also makes me feel so torn because I could see myself having some fun with Superstars but the lack of polish makes playing games like this boring and/or frustrating sometimes. I also notice that studios besides sega are rushing games and it sucks to wait and see if a game gets fixed or not, because not all of them get decent patches.
@@GwyndolinOwO yeah I have the same sentiment. Frontiers at launch was very unpolished, lucky for us, they added the updates to the game and it gave the game more polish, mainly in the movement, its one of my favorite sonic controls in 3d now. But, to reach this, it took 1 whole year to give us things that *should've* been there at launch. And even then, the last update was unpolished as well and its clear that it needs an update too (which is coming according to the steam page). Just because SEGA could get away with it before (with the classic era), doesn't mean that they can now, nor they should. I would gladly wait more for a more polished experience. If SEGA didn't rush their developers, and didn't made their lives so awful (Iizuka almost losing his job just to delay Frontiers comes to mind), they wouldn't have lost so many talented people as well
Consumers and Developers alike have been asking SEGA to stop rushing things for 30 years, it's a fool's errand at this point.
The sound effect at 7:11 is from Sonic Unleashed. It's the sound effect used for a Chaos Emerald being restored in the cutscenes where Sonic is in the Gaia temples after bosses.

Might be wrong but isn't it also used for the menus in generations?

poor Chaos, he is crying in the background
One thing I noticed was that all of the reptile characters (at least in the classic games) have a special spinball animation, with Espio’s top spin and vector and trip’s donut spin, and they all also have some kind of wall climb ability, with only vector being locked to walls only. The wall climb thing is probably just a coincidence, but I could see the spinball idea possibly being intentional, or at least something that could be revisited later. If only the modern games didn’t lock everyone to the standard ball.
I can't believe it's possible for Epic Games to shoehorn itself into Steam.
The whole "No one hates X more than the fans" is especially true of Sonic.
Ah yes, I distinctly remember all those times Shadow summoned giant beanstalks with that damn green Chaos Emerald. He was all about those beanstalks.
... Seriously, they were that pressed for emerald power ideas, and they still didn't include teleportation? You know, basically the only power we've ever seen from an individual Chaos Emerald? Chaos Control?
This is an extremely "Chrischan-eque" complaint about this. Also, this is the Classic continuity, Shadow doesn't exist (that we know of).
@warbossgegguz679 Aren't they trying to fix that as of late and did rescind that statement...that being said teleportation does kinda save the time just waiting for the vine to get you to a point.
@@zjzr08 I would LOVE if they stopped the whole "Classic sonic and modern sonic are 2 sperate universes" thing but idk. It's one of the many things Forces introduced that's extremely stupid, despite Generations making it clear it was a time travel thing.
I figured they used vines because it would make the mechanic still involve platforming and not just totally break movement by giving you the ability to literally warp anywhere in any direction.
I said what I said because even if you disagree with that, arguing about it on the basis of "canon" is extremely autistic.
@@warbossgegguz679 how in the fuck is this "chrischan-esque" complaint and also what the fuck does that even mean
@warbossgegguz679 I'm not sure what autism has to do with that idea, but adding what was already known abilities of the Chaos Emerald, does make it feel that it's more connected with the series a bit, adding a sense of continuity and consistency to build on, which many long franchise fans usually want.
That very beginning moment... I've never seen a subocean in a 2d platformer
I'm honestly impressed that sonic fans have been abused so badly for so long, but are still hopeful each and every time a new game comes out.
I find it weird that when it came to my playthrough of Superstars, I found none of the glitches on my own. It doesn't mean I think that anyone's glitchy experiences are invalid, just... Feels weird cuz it feels like when I want to try the glitches, I'm trying to force it at that point.
I was about to say this. I encountered *very* few glitches during my playthrough, outside of the average amount I'd find in any game nowadays. And I played on the switch, which some claim would likely be the buggiest port
The game was a glitchy disaster if you played before the day one patch.
@@broom673 Bro, I was a Day One Adopter
@rcbmaverickhunterpolarity1544 Yes, but this was like the midnight release. I played it the moment it came out. They fixed it the next morning. Lagoon City Act A had atrocious graphical glitches with Amy and Trip's textures flickering like crazy before the patch, and the overworld would teleport me to the final zone where I would fall into a black void whenever you went to the shop when prompted to do so. The shop glitch still exists, but it happened everytime prepatch.
@@broom673 Yet again, so did I. I played through the midnight release, and yet I was still weirdly without extensive glitches. Kind of just played the game and didn't have any problems. I did admittedly replay the first stage, so I didn't get past Speed Jungle, so I imagine any patches would have fixed my experiences, since at that point the only glitches would be ones I invoke, like the Non-Drain Super.
Imagine if they made Frontiers into Knuckles Frontiers. Instead of going super for every boss, they gave Knuckles unique Chaos Emerald abilities like they do in this game to combat bosses.
Then you could turn them into smaller versions to combat enemies / mini-bosses as a reward for playing with the story attempting to explain that using them as a massive boost for the Titans drained them and they need to recharge, or something.
Would make more sense then Sonic just losing the emeralds every time the plot needed him too.

It's Alright. If you're looking for Mania 2, no. If you're looking for a decent 2D sonic, it's fine. Sort of like the Advance games imo. Like 7/10. above average, but not "amazing". Also WAY over priced.
Didn't have the same amount of gliches when I played it on Ryujinx but idk. I think rob played the PS5 version so maybe avoid that one?
I didn't get the game and thinks it looks bad since launch date and had a feeling there was a catch. I barely even complain about any game that I never played. This was the first. I don't have to play the game to tell if it's bad or not... I just know. I thought frontiers wasn't going to be good, I then saw a lot of praise and bought it out of curiosity then I hated it and even the fandom more for giving it a pass and blocking any critique from anyone without them on there knees and saying "don't get me wrong the game is still good, but..." excuse. I saw Superstars thought it didn't look good and it feel into my predictions, concerns, what I possibly thought was going to happen then it HAPPENED. Being Soft locked makes this game a true Sonic game.
Sega didn't treat Headcannon particularly well during Origins development it's said, so we're not getting any more Mania goodness any time soon. Not under a Sega IP, anyway (good luck, Penny’s Big Breakaway!)
But let's not be too cruel Arzest, they're a co-dev at best, even on this one. Balan wasn't their brainchild.
I just had to think about the second dicvision Manager of Sega wanting Sonic to "surpass Mario". Yeah, looking at this that's not going to happen soon I'd suppose.
Sega wants Sonic to surpass Mario, but refuses to give any of the games the time and resources they need to accomplish that.
@@LordArikadoMario games are usually in development for YEARS so they have all the time in the world to make their games immaculate.
The fact that Sega launched this game almost at the same time as Super Mario Wonder is comedy gold.
I dont think that there's ever a good time to rush a game out, but this has to be one of the worst times for them to rush a sonic release. Right next to mario wonder? Right before Spider-man? Like c'mon sega you are contractually obligated to at least PRETEND how your sonic games perform.

@@akiradkcn I don't really think so. Late October to mid-December is considered the holiday season and is the end of the fiscal year, so they probably rushed it to end on a high note. Also why they released Like a Dragon Gaiden within weeks of it. Gotta make as much bank as possible for the yearly reports.
Not even being cynical, this is just a standard practice in the toy and video game industry. It's when you sacrifice the quality of said product for the sake of meeting that deadline (as was clearly done here with the patch that's 2/3 the size of the game itself) that I take issue.
Man, this game had so much potential
Like most of the bad Sonic games.
I also don't understand why they released this like a year after Frontiers. I know it was made by a different team, but couldn't they have released this in the next year? An extra year would allow for more polish.
Sadly Sonic Fans will still eat it up and say “SONIC IS IN A GREAT SPOT RIGHT NOW WITHIN THE PAST 15 YEARS!” When in reality the only real successes were the movies and Sonic Frontiers. I guess Murder of Sonic as well but that’s not a mainline game.

You guys remember when Mario vs. Sonic was a serious competition? Now Mario's doing backflips while Sonic's in the hospital.

Both this and mania look fantastic imo, just in different ways. Mania's main sell is just how animated it is, but that's also easier to do in 2D rather than 3D at the cost of stuff like scaling difficulties and other issues.
As a fan of SNK I fully understand the appeal of SUPER ANIMATED and detailed sprite work, but the problem is that's very rare in a lot of small/indie games unless they take the minimalist approach (which then kind of defeats the point).
it’s kind of weird how Superstars says “knuckles has super powers” which once again leads people down the road that everyone but Sonic’s super forms have been retconned away from canon. but Frontiers has Knuckles mention his super form, on Ares island…so obviously it does exist, but superstars (which only came out a year later) once again refuses to say super form when referring to knuckles and other characters…it’s so weird.

Imagine if there was a Mania mode introduced later. Most of the bosses get replaced with the hard boiled heavies, as a means to show the altered timeline that formed after the Time Eater.
@@nixter3196 I just post the truth
Why invent Trip when we already got Sticks??? Also that dragon does not fit sonic at all 😂😂😂😭
And like 20 other characters they could've used instead, but no let's just make a new oc instead of a character that people already like and we never use...
At least Amy was finally playable again, sadly in a shit game so it doesn't even matter...
I don't know very much about Sonic.
From an outside perspective it looks like pretty much almost every Sonic game that comes out is terrible.
So what do Sonic fans do when a new game gets announced?
Do they actually still get excited? How many times does someone need to be burned to see that it's just not worth it anymore?
And why does this happen so often too? Does Sega not care about the quality of their literal main franchise?
I mean, I heard Mania was good and I think Generations too
but it seems like Sonic fans have to dig through so much garbage to get a good game like once every 10 years.
Whenever a Sonic game releases and I hear that it's bad, I'm not even surprised anymore because bad is what I expect from Sonic (based on what I heard).
It's more surprising to hear when people call a Sonic game good.
Everything about the Sonic franchise is a complete mystery to me.
Sega literally does not care about the quality of Sonic games. 25 months ago, they released a game that could (potentially) cause sezuires and had no warning.
Sega just keeps giving Sonic Team _barely_ enough time and budget to release an actual game, because they know "it's a Sonic game, it'll sell well anyway".
However, people stick around because they like previous games and believe the series has the potential to do better.
@@zemchia Unfortunately they've had the rushing mindset for over two decades, look into Xtreme, a canceled Sonic game that resulted in devs being hospitalized, and the reason 06 was so bad was because they cut the dev team in half and rushed whoever was left, the devs were forced to release an earlier build than intended. Sega never learns
@@JargonMadjin Yeah I remember hearing that one of Xtreme's lead programmers had pneumonia due to her stress, and the lead designer (Chris Senn) was stressed so bad that his doctor told him he had six months to live (he lived and worked on Rise of Lyric).
Honestly Trip's "story" made me appreciate the emerald powers more, but the final boss for it is so infuriating between the wait and the OHKOs
Water is such a weird one though, mostly because I managed to glitch it into working *out* of the water a couple of times, not to mention I realised the controls for the cyber jellyfish were the same
I'll definitely be using that transformation glitch to cheese the final boss though, I still haven't finished it and don't feel like putting any more hours into it
if for you this game is already expensive for it's content, imagine here on brazil were the game costs 289 reais ("real or reais" in plural is the money from here)
WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK NEARLY 300 DOLLARS FOR THIS?
@@antonn.mp4 Well, when I say 289, it's 289 reais (the money from here isn't valorized like It was before for some reason, and now SEGA made the prices of the games on Brazilian Steam go with 3 times the original price, EVEN SONIC ADVENTURE DX now it's more expensive than It was before
@@retrodeveloper9156 that’s insanity bro
@@antonn.mp4 and that is Why here alot of people Pirates Pc games or downloads pirated games, Because the prices are high as hell
My condolences man, that's screwed up pricing there, whether a game is good or not
I actually liked most of the levels and didn't have much issues with the difficulty... I feel like I'm crazy since nobody seems to agree with me 😔
The only thing I dislike is the multiplayer being so annoying and the price tag, but honestly I'll live. After 5 years of disappointments, I'm glad we have two good sonic games in a row.
There are two kinds of player: those who want running and those who actually realize sonic is a platformer. I like even labyrynth zone
@@vazazell5967oh my gosh you’re the first person in years that I’ve seen like Labrinth Zone and not utterly despise it. As a sucker for water levels, I agree with your opinion
Imma be real, this is the first super negative review of this game I've seen. Most outlets are like "It's above average, not amazing, PC version is trash" and that's about it.
I mean, I'm always happy to hear someone else tear SEGA an new asshole as they deserve. Especially when everyone outside of their core fandom praises them because "they did the 'nintendo hire this man thing for real'!" (even though Headcannon now wants nothing to do with them after getting screwed on Sonic Origins)
And also "They allow for fangames and romhacks unlike Ninty!" (though they've DMCAd basically every high-profile fan game that's for any of their IPs other than Sonic).
As a sega/sonic fan since childhood, Sega may be the worst and most mismanaged Japanese publisher outside of Konami, so I'm always on board to bash them. But as far as Superstars, it's fine.
@@warbossgegguz679Oh you can bash SEGA, it's understandable. I didn't defend SEGA in my comment. They are incredible mismanaged and make very stupid decisions, tho I don't think they are malicious either. My biggest gripe with them is their obsession with rushing out game projects, which in the end affects the quality of most of their products.
Glad to know in your case the reception with Superstars was mostly positive.
@@vazazell5967 My favorite classic Sonic game is CD so I guess that explains why I don't mind slowing things down and exploring the level. Not to mention Superstars has easier high speed routes than CD. I scratched my head a little when I saw Soda almost constantly getting hit and calling the game annoying. It make me think that he was just pressing right and moving on...
No, favoritism is when you take a couple characters from the Sonic franchise that are "So popular" and include them in one spin off game and forget them altogether when a new character comes along and the whole "Wash, rinse, repeat" cycle starts up again.
I'm looking at you, SEGA, forgetting about the SatAM characters, Sticks the Badger and Marine the Racoon. It's Tangle and Whisper now, but it'll soon be a "Brand new Official OC character" to slap onto another Sonic game and be it once and ONLY ONCE.
But seriously, Sticks appeared in Mario and Sonic at the Rio Olympic Games after being in the Sonic Boom video game and that's it. Same goes for Sally, Bunnie and Rotor (No Antoine for whatever reason!) in Sonic Spinball and both Tangle and Whisper in the Sonic Battle Forces running game.
Next it'll be Surge and Kit, or even a background character turned "Official character" like Lanolin the Sheep. Trip's just another character in a long list of Sega's "Sonic characters that have potential of being a returning character", ONLY to be used once and quickly forgotten.
So get used to Trip the Suncatcher Lizard for the time being, Folks, because she'll soon be replaced by a future character from a Sonic game and/or a Sonic character from a comic book or cartoon Sonic universe and be just another character tossed in the "Forgotten" trash bin. SMH
Where's my superstars revie- oh here it is
@islandman7694 You don't know how far down i scrolled
When Trip had her face reveal, the game crashed when she was startled. That was probably my favorite part of the game.
I played through the whole normal story mode as mainly Tails or Amy and the only major thing that I had a problem with was the bosses. I honestly don't know if it's a good thing you can't BS your way to victory like most of Sonic 2's bosses or bad that some of them overstay their welcome. Maybe a bit of both.
Anyway, I don't think I encountered any gamebreaking glitches in my playthrough. I did play the Steam version and I have no idea how it stacks up to the other versions in terms of polish. Still better than Sonic Advance 2. Nothing can be more bullshit than that game.
Can't believe I was considering getting this instead of mario wonder
Played this game on release and didn't have a single issue with it, the amount of glitches showcased here really surprised me! That said, I don't get the hate for the soundtrack, even the Jun tracks. I love the genesis soundfont's character, and I think it's very "classic sonic" personally
Sega really thought that the developers of three horrible games would make a good Sonic game
Game's shit
The “super powers” thing, you do remember Super Tails, Super Knuckles, and Super Amy aren’t canon, right? They won’t be canon for a LONG time. Knuckles only said something about it in Frontiers as him boasting, I believe
Sega also said "everything is canon" and "classic Sonic is from a different dimension instead of the past" so I don't listen to a word they say anymore, as far as I'm concerned, there is no canon
"They won’t be canon for a LONG time" it's been 30 years since Sonic 3 & Knuckles... I think that qualifies as a long time
@@Hollow_Tim exactly
@@JargonMadjinI'd like to go in between that and say Classic Sonic is from another dimension in another time. Kinda like the Future Trunks thing
@@edmpunkfire7793 This isn't the first time Sega made the timeline/dimension mistake. It's either bad translation or just incompetence. I personally stopped caring about the Sonic canon after Forces, Frontiers really nailed it home with the game being 50% exposition fanfiction, Frontiers was just NieR Automata but nowhere near as good
Knuckles levitating was canon as of Sonic Boom.
What the hell version did you play for these consistent bugs and glitches? I run it on Steam and only encountered one of them, and only once at that. (The infinite fall at the start of the video)
That's kind of the nature of bugs. They wouldn't have gotten past testing if everyone got them equally
@@nixter3196 Yeah but the vid implies (and even shows) it approaching Sonic 06 levels of bugs and glitches while I've barely had any in my runs and I haven't found many videos with other bugs like this. I just find it odd that this one person in particular gets the buggy mess while most other players get a stable version.
From the look of his menus it seems to be the PS version... which I have no idea why THAT would be so bad unless it was prepatch.
I played this on Ryujinx and had no glitches to my recollection, so IDK what the hell happened with the PS5 port where an EMULATED SWITCH VERSION is more stable.
I played on base PS4 and only encountered the music cutting out glitch. Numerous times at that.
I guess Superstars is pretty similar to Mania when you think about it.
He literally says in the video that he played the Playstation port because Steam forces you to launch it with Epic Games for some BS reason
I just wish we finally got Super Amy.
