To save the life of my mat I attach the leather to some vinyl transfer tape then put it on the mat. When you remove the leather all the fuzz is left on the transfer tape and not the mat. It is a cheaper to toss out a piece of transfer tape than a mat after a few cuts. Hope this little trick helps.
I do the same!!
I have totally done that before! I am not totally impressed with the grip on the leather so I didn’t mention it.
Me too I always do this
I purchased a roll of clear Contact Paper shelf liner at the Dollar Tree & this works quite well, AND is a lot cheaper than transfer tape!!
I do this too it really the best way to save your mat and have a great cut x
The leather you're using isn't meant to really take impressions, unless you're hot stamping it. To really get a good impression, you'll want to use veg tanned leather which, when wet, will take an impression.
I'm a leather worker looking at using the Cricut to possible cut and trace patterns that I'll carve into the leather.
Interesting! I would probably have to order that online.
Thank you for your advice! I think the Cricut would be a great added tool for your work. I have used their machines since the beginning, and the Maker is the perfect tool for you. Be sure and buy their Light Pad with it. It isn't expensive, and a great tool for tracing.
yes I was thinking the same thing - this is a finished leather, you need something more raw for tooling like the veg tanned which you can buy from Tandy or online if you don't have a local Tandy. Glen, did you ever end up getting the cricut? Would love to know your thoughts.
Try using transfer tape sticky side up on mat under the leather
This really helped me! Thank you for posting!
Glad it helped!
Great video! Loved the project! It would be cool it use a lighter color leather, do the design and then stain the leather to make the design pop more. 😊
Hi using chrome leather it will naturally be water resistant, it's vegetable leather that you wet to emboss it, you can get veg tan is small soft thickness from either calf or goat at 1.5mm or a lot less thickness
In leatherworking, we use a swivel knife for cutting in designs like this. That is the first step. I have a Maker as well and haven't gotten around to using it for leather, but I will eventually. The hand working process and the automated process are going to yield very different results when it comes to embossing/debossing. Don't expect one process to look like another. They're each their own animal. Both are fine, but going to look different.
So very true!
I read somewhere that if you put transfer tape on the back of the leather, it sticks to the mat better. Peel it off when you finish cutting, engraving. I haven't tried it yet.
It helps protect your mat but does not stick better in my opinion.
Great info. Thanks. I was looking for tips to create leather covers for decorative book boxes. I think this will work great with some dry brush detailing!
Glad it was helpful!
Never knew the names of these tools now I know. Thanks for sharing!
Happy to help!
Super helpful! I just got my engraving tool today and I am so excited to use it!
What’s the best kind of leather to engrave with the Cricut blade?
Thank you for making some simple projects for the newbies!
You should use clear shelf liner for leather. You don't ruin your mat. Just a tip. Thanks for your information.
I have before! I have videos on that as well.
Add contact paper to the mat for easy clean up
I apologize if this is a silly question, but do you set the engraving tool on the leather setting to get this impression? I haven't used the engraving tip with my Maker yet so I'm curious.
I would set it on whatever material you are using yes. In this case, it was on leather as I cut it as well.
I’m new to your channel and I love it.
Thank you for this video, very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
If you haven’t got an engraving tool you could just cut the letter once using the fine tip blade it would probably give a very similar effect
Interesting idea! Wondering what that would look like now!
Thanks for this video ! I begin with my Cricut Maker and I try the debossing tool but I was not satisfy... so I will try the engraving tool 😀
Good luck!
I know you said the leather really shortage your mates life have you tried ironing on heat transfer to the back of the leather I do that on my felt and it works great and then finish off the back by ironing on the reverse side. I have not tried it but guess it will work the same as the felt along with taping it down. should help to have the leather not move and make you mate last longer;) Thanks for all your tips and hope this one help everyone!!
Yes! I do that sometimes for felt but haven't for leather. I actually like to use strong grip transfer tape on the back then stick that to my mat. It would be worth a try if you were cutting a bunch of leather.
I also add contact adhesive to the back of my leather, then place it down on the mat. I think you got the wrong type of leather for debossing. I also think that if you would engrave, then emboss it would work much better. Also it doesn't need to be very wet at all.
The contact paper trick does work well but I still have trouble in this scenario with it moving when I do that. I tried not very wet and really wet both with the same results. I was using the Cricut leather as they market it for use with these tools.
When I try to do a second pass on any media the Cricut dosen't touch the exact same sopt. It shifts just enough to see both passes.
Just viewed your video. I use transfer media placed face down (sticky side up) on the mat. When this gets all dirty just replace it with a new piece of transfer media on. A lot less expensive than a new mat.
I have done that before! I do find that it doesn't hold well sometimes though.
The last time I cut leather was about a year ago and the cut didn't go well. I think it was the blade. Anyhow, I'm looking into burnishing it before I cut it. I'm still going to use upside down transfer media though. I guess we all have our ways of doing things. Thanks for your response and sharing for your experiences.
Thank you i was looking for this video! 💜💜💜
Hope you like it!
I use transfer tape on my mat, then the leather and painters tape saves your mat x
I do that all the time!
Do you have full tutorial on making these keychains?
This is all I have.
Thanks for the info
Can u cut with this same knife? I'm asking while watching the video so sorry if I'm ahead
Cut with the knife blade and engrave with the engraving tip. The engraving tip won't cut.
Have you tried engraving and then debossing over top of the engraving? I'm thinking it might make the engraving stand out even more...
I have not. That would be almost impossible with the Cricut as you have to eject the mat in between cuts and the location would be off.
@@AngieHolden good to know.... I don't have a Cricut yet, I am getting ready to order one. Doing some research before purchase. Thanks for the great videos!
I'm not an expert crafter in the least but I learned this tip. Try cutting it and engraving it like you showed and then before ejecting the mat switch the blade to the deboss tip and hit the go button again. It will deboss in the SAME exact spot. It's just a tip I learned and it works! Love your channel.

Is there any way to engrave or emboss a leather BELT with a Cricut?
It may be too thick to go under the rollers.
What cricut you recommend to buy? :)
Try this: ruclips.net/video/Nkszs7wJNFI/видео.html
You are saying "deboss" instead of "emboss", is this the same thing or?
Deboss pushes a design INTO a material. An emboss is a raised design on a material. So this depresses the material. There is a difference.
Did you try this with Pleather?
I have not.
Can you do this with Faux leather?
I have not had a ton of luck with that.
Could you engrave smaller pieces of leather, like earrings?
Definitely!
@@AngieHolden I've done both engraving and debossing. I agree engraving is better but I'm still looking for something that pops out. You can't really see engraving from a distance especially on something as small as an earring.
What font is the H you used in this video?
I think I just searched "H monogram" in design space and picked one they had there.
Where can I find your engraved keychain project.
Link in description below this video.
Wetting the leather, was it only the back side or all around?
I did it the first time all over. The second only the front.
Could you use the Circut brand Faux Suede instead of the material you used?
Of course! It should work well!
Hello! I am curious, do you know if the engraving tip will work with engraving watch bands? If so what material setting what you choose? Thank you!
The watch band itself may not fit inside the machine.
Angie Holden. I was able to de- attach both ends of the watch bands to place them on the mat. But the engraving is very faint and didn’t pierce the surface of the watch band. I even tried the knife blade and of course it was a failure. 😞😂. I was wondering if a actually engraving machine is best.
The only thing I have seen the watch bands done with is a glow forge. I am thinking the engraving tip would not be able to do it but I haven't tried.
Angie Holden Thank you 😊
If I have the fabric housing will it work for these tips?
No the rotary blade housing does not work for these. You need a separate housing for these tips.
Angie Holden so if I buy the housing with the knife will I just need the tip for the engraver and embossed
The rotary blade and housing are one. The knife blade and housing are another. The third housing works with the scoring wheel, deboss, engraving, wavy, and perf blades interchangeably. Boy that sounds confusing when I type it out.
Angie Holden yes very confusing I had to screen shot it lol tyvm
What font are you using for this?
Do you know if the cricut colored leather engraves well?
It should be the same as this!
Have you tried deboss and engraving tool on faux leather?
I don't think they will work on faux.
Did you adjust the blades? Thanks
No. No adjustments.
Angie Holden thanks I was wondering if more pressure would have made a difference. Thanks for all the effort you have made on each of your videos. They are very well done.
I usually find the “more” only gives a little more pressure and I am not sure if it is even an option on the deboss and engrave.
Why does my leather tear? The cuts are not nearly as clean as yours
I have never had an issue with leather tearing so I am totally not sure. Is it lifting from the mat maybe in the middle?
Good info, but please stop using the metal hammer on metal tools. You're more likely to break either tool and/or injure yourself with shrapnel.
