"The End" Part 2: • LOST Soundtrack Analys...
"Moving On" (Final scene): • LOST Soundtrack Analys...
    "All of this matters."
For the series finale of LOST, Michael Giacchino pays tribute to the characters by uniting over 50 established themes... But the island demands one more before the show ends.
#LOST SOUNDTRACK ANALYSIS (Michael Giacchino's score)
So many years after the show's ending, Michael Giacchino's amazing soundtrack for LOST still has many, many secrets to uncover. Not only does every main character have their own theme music, but much like the interconnected writing of the show itself, Giacchino's score connects locations, scenes, emotions and conflicts in unbelievably brilliant ways. For the foreseeable future, I will be exploring Michael Giacchino's soundtrack from ABC's LOST in a weekly video, covering all episodes of the show and their musical connections to each other.

The way the Home Theme gels with the little "clip show" packages is unfairly good. A great way to quickly remember all the moments you've loved with the characters while not distracting from or overshadowing the story of the finale. I really love the Locke one in particular. Two of my favorite themes together. (And I think Giacchino loved it so much he put the Locke/Home theme moment in two different scenes).

It's amazing. The music from the Locke awakening is especially great. There will be a separate 'bonus' video to cover his flashsideways scenes from "The End".

The Light' theme has such a big scope! With all the limitations Lost had with budget and time, he manages to bring out that feels adventurous and epic.
Kind of anticlimactic that "The End" is beaten by "Follow the Leader" :/ It always felt like "The End" had the most. It's so packed!

Yeah, it's really one of my favorite themes from the show. Pretty crazy to think it plays so many times in the span of 40 minutes. It doesn't feel overbearing or out of place, even though it's very different in scope and tone.

Damn, we reached the end.... I just love all of the work you have put in this incredible series. Are you moving on from LOST after the conclusion of the soundtrack analysis?

A video on the soundtrack "Closure" will be coming soon, and after that I definitely do plan on making other LOST videos. 😄

Incredible video and analysis. A lot of the on-island scenes from the finale have become my favorite on rewatches, along with the tracks.
"Blood From A Locke" is one of my favorites. I'm curious what you think about Jack's secondary, more intense theme being used mainly for it before The Light's theme starts. I love it for that scene as it immediately ramps up the stakes of the episode, and it's character based instead of something finale related.
When Jack's talking about turning the light back on, The Light's theme almost sounds like it's haunting him in the moment. I love the theme and the scope/epic-ness it gives the last episode. But it doesn't quite have the finality to it that Jughead's theme did in The Incident or even the freighter's theme. This is more of a nitpick than anything as I think the theme is great and fitting for the heart of the island.
Is "Locke v Jack" mostly new and original? The few measures that play when Jack first punches Locke and Locke takes his backpack off, then again when Jack's choking Locke and they're fighting for the knife. Is that tied to an existing motif? Has possibly became my favorite moment in the series. It's as intense and insane as possible, especially in the scope of it being the final episode.
Also - insane that Giacchino didn't win an Emmy for this. Literally what else could you do lmao.

Thanks a lot! I love Jack's main motif. Glad it still makes a couple of appearances in the finale. It fits very well with that scene. Like you mentioned, it makes that moment more about their personal conflict than, you know, the island sinking to the bottom to the ocean.
"Locke v. Jack" is indeed mostly new. It does feature what I've called "Jack's duel motif", which also plays when Jack is fighting Sawyer in the season 5 finale (just repeating the first four notes from his main motif), followed by the main theme. Some Locke and MIB themes play at the very end. Other than that (I realize I just referred to six established themes/motifs) it's not tied to any earlier scenes/motifs. In fact, it appears it was not composed by Michael Giacchino himself - his assistant Chad Seiter took credit for that track on his website, which has recently been taken down. Seiter is also responsible for the orchestral version of "Shambala", parts of the early episodes of Fringe, and some video games tied to projects Giacchino worked on (including "Via Domus").

@@FringeMusic107 Great point about it being more about their personal conflict than anything. When you sit back and take in that image of Jack choking Locke on the cliffs, it's like it all came to this. Jack and Locke's conflict (though subverted and broader in that it's not the old Jack vs. old Locke) is maybe the biggest plot point in the show character wise? With the island crumbling around them, it's this that we care about. Really gets underrated as the on-island plot of Jack vs. MIB/Locke kind of has taken a backseat in fans minds when talking about the finale. The flash sideways is a bit distracting (not in a bad way) when it comes to the finale as it's the main twist/reveal that people wanted an answer for.

Also, I mistakenly thought Jack's main theme, introduced in Confidence Man, was his secondary and the more emotional one that we hear at the end of Through the Looking Glass was his main. I agree, definitely makes that scene with Locke/MIB more personal.

@@mikeinglese9631 It's just names, really. 🙂 With over 500 themes/motifs on the show, I had to make a distinction between them, so the one from 1x08 became "Jack's main motif" while the one from 3x01 was simply "Jack's 1st theme". For what it's worth, the motif from 1x08 appears a lot more!
