  • Over the last few months ive been testing different configurations with my Hellcat Pro to see what reduces recoil best. I have the DPM recoil reduction springs, ive installed an Apex threaded barrel and Strike Industries quad comp, ive even had Floyd's Custom port one of my Hellcat Pro's. We did videos on each of these individually but today I'm going to use the Mantis X10 Elite to gather data and compare recoil to determine which is the best option.

    Hey Mike, if you have time and don’t already know about them - you might reach out to Trash No Land - its a non profit in Washington & Oregon that works with both state agencies and private volunteers to clean and manage public shooting areas. The guys who run it are on Northwest Firearms forum - good people. When I still lived in Oregon my wife & i helped clean the shooting area we used - which was built in partnership between TNL and ODF. The work that group and the volunteers do helps keep areas open to the public. I know you are a busy guy, but if you get the time, its a great bunch of folks to work with.

    I think the hellcat pro is a little snappier than my Glock 19 clone, but I don't think I found that to be a problem. I seem to shoot pretty accurately with it at 10 yd. I am seriously thinking about porting it though. The way I see it, anything that can give you an advantage with better accuracy is worth doing. Thanks for doing all this though. Was really fun to watch.

      @parunbelhomme Год назад

      @@360TacticalSolutions True. Not having to modify your holster is definitely a plus. I bought a FN 509 holster from a buddy of mine who had it built with only the threaded barrel and X300 in mind. It's completely useless to me when I run the comped slide, but with the ported slide, no mods needed. I'm thinking about cutting the end of it open to accommodate the comped slide but I'm worried I might ruin the whole thing.

    • @SasquatchTX

      @@parunbelhommedepending on design, you don’t have to cut the end - use a heat gun (gentle - don’t heat till shiny, just till it softens) - then use a wood block to open up the muzzle end to accommodate the comp.

      Ah good. Im glad you watched this. You mentioned carpel tunnel earlier and I thought this video was one you needed to see. There is way too much “oh this FEELS better than that” when it comes to these videos. Having the data makes it real and shows that some things work better than others. Perhaps the results may vary for people but at least I can see there was a difference with each variant in order to give my thoughts on.

    Thoughts on porting the gen 1 Hellcat?
    I loved it till I realized how much recoil it had versus a Glock 19. I also kick myself for getting the OSP with the red dot. I can never find the dot because it’s not bright enough. Considering porting and getting a better dot. Maybe I’ll keep it for summer carrying

      You can certainly see some reduction in recoil if you port it and if you look through my Hellcat Pro playlist I have various videos with information and links on better optic choices and adapters. Im no fan of that HexWasp lol. The real question is how comfortable is the Hellcat in your hand and how are you with its accuracy? It may be more beneficial to sell it and buy the Pro? I prefer the more full grip of the pro and I dont think it conceals any less than the smaller version.

    I sent my Hellcat Pro slide & barrel to Floyds and love it! Thanks for your advice. Then I transferred the QUAD comp to my Hellcat OSP. But do you think it would be worth porting the shorter slide and barrel of the Hellcat OSP?

    • @360TacticalSolutions
      @360TacticalSolutions  8 месяцев назад +1

      Glad to hear the feedback. The smaller size Hellcat doesnt have a lot of barrel length. Sure you can get some reduction in recoil with porting just remember you will lose around 3/4 of an inch worth of riflings at the end when you port. Thats going to drop you down to just over 2” of actual barrel which could really affect your velocity. The HCP fairs pretty well becuase you still have like 4” of rifled barrel after the port job.
      While I do believe porting the 3” Hellcat can help in recoil I feel like there are a lot of other factors to consider. For instance the short barrel is already loud, porting will make it louder…probably a lot louder than the ported HCP. Decreases in velocity, maybe even acuracy but testing would have to be done. I have gotten some feedback that the porting on the short Hellcat did wonders for how it handles but I cant confirm anything past that

      Ive never liked the Glock style platform...and I don't blame you on the grip on that thing. If a grip doesn't have a spot for my pinkie it's a no go. Having to use a mag with a pinkie extension is the worst idea ever conceived. Lol sell that thing and scoop up a used Hellcat Pro. You can save some money that way and if you are going to have it ported the barrel and slide need re finished in the process so really it will be "new" once its done. Between going with a used one and selling the Shadow you won't be in the hole too much after having the port job done

      It’s less about having a problem with the recoil of the gun and more about increasing ability to take faster and more accurate follow up shots. Then of course there are those people with medical conditions that need the extra advantage of lowering recoil. I actually think the HCP in its stock configuration is only slightly more snappy than something like a G19 or 4” M&P…even on days my carpel tunnel is flaring up

      On a fresh install, the pro grips feel like 60%sand paper 40% rubber, but after shooting it all day with sweaty hands, it feels a lot more 40%sand paper, and 60% rubber. Which imo is nicer.

    • @360TacticalSolutions
      @360TacticalSolutions  9 месяцев назад

      It’s all about your grip. I find that my thumb rids the slide release when im shooting and then when my mag runs dry its not able to lock the slide back. Try giving a little less pressure with your thumb against the frame or move your strong side thumb so it’s sitting up on your support side thumb. I catch myself constantly slipping back into the same old grip ive used my whole life on bigger guns and when I do….slide wont lock back. Then I remind myself of this issue and correct it and everything is fine, till I get comfortable and forget what im doing and I go right back to the old way. At this point I just shrug it off and I work on doing reloads and racking the slide. In an emergency situation I wont be thinking about altering my grip to make sure I dont thumb the slide release…so I may as well work on training around that

    • @360TacticalSolutions
      @360TacticalSolutions  6 месяцев назад +1

      Id say yes but with a couple of side notes. First is the DPM spring, what it costs vs what measure of reduction in recoil it provides…it’s questionable as to its value. If you have the money and it doesnt hurt to spend it on something that only slightly changes your recoil then sure, buy it. Second side note is about porting. The porting by far was the thing that changed how the HCP handles the most. I almost cant tell the difference between my ported HCP with and without the DPM spring. All im feeling is the port job. Also on that topic Floyd’s now has two styles of porting. Commander and Enforcer porting. This video has the Commander which is top and sides. I just recently had my secondary HCP ported using the Enforcer porting. I’ll be doing a comparison soon but here is my honest breakdown….if you have a couple hundred to spend and you want your HCP to perform the best for the money then get the Enforcer porting done at Floyds, have them do the DLC coating and you are good to go. I think last I looked the DPM spring set was like $150 but I dont feel it gives $150 worth of recoil reduction. Between the two options for porting so far the Enforcer is working out slightly better than the Commander. Ill be doing more HCP content very soon but right now im enjoying a end of year break

    • @360TacticalSolutions
      @360TacticalSolutions  11 месяцев назад

      Oh shit I haven’t been to Kent in a few years but I’m glad to have you here. I’m up in Skagit County but I really appreciate the support of WA locals.
      As to your questions…ported pistols also have some drawbacks similar to comped pistols. Fireballs, volume level, cost, permanent change to the firearm. This ported HCP has been my daily carry since it came back from being ported. Right now I’m back on my M&P while I do some testing with other upgrades but I trust the ported HCP for sure. In the event I have to use the gun in a self defense situation I want that extra control I get with it ported. My follow up shots are going to be more accurate and faster because I’m experiencing less muzzle rise.
      I think where people get nervous is reliability. Is this modified gun going to work when I need it. We all expect that to be a yes if we are taking about an unmodified gun from the factory. The real question is your trust in the company doing the porting and the person who’s telling you it runs well. That parts up to you and you can dig into Floyd’s a bit and see they have a great track record and are a family owned company out of Idaho…so we are neighbors, and me well you can take my word for what it’s worth. Out of all the guns I own, if I want to leave the house with a slim, easy to conceal firearm that is accurate reliable and has a good capacity then my ported HCP is the first one I grab. I’m actually not thrilled to be carrying my M&P right now lol. I love it but I’m ready to go back to the HCP

      @@stonebat I’m still testing but I’m leaning toward Enforcer. The recoil mitigation so far seems very similar. My HCP was one of the first to be ported and at that point it was only the commander. I sent my second HCP for porting when they came up with the Enforcer. I give the enforcer a slight advantage because the front sight doesn’t get relocated and I’ve found it has a slightly different fireball pattern lol. Once in a while ported guns breath fire. The commander vs enforcer in lower light conditions I feel the commander has more chance of blocking your view because of its top port. One thing I need to test before I make a video is velocity. I want to see what the difference in velocity is as well as use the mantis to measure recoil and go from there

Over time it will wear down and be a bit smoother and feel really similar to the Hellcat Pro. The grip on the HCP isn't bad but the more I train with the MantisX the more I can see that im not getting enough of a solid grip from its texture. Over time as it wears that will just get worse. I wanted to just try the Talon Grips and after all of about 30 seconds of having it installed I was sold on them. The Talon Pro Grips arent like a sandpaper texture. I find when there are wildly varying reports about something…personal bias tends to lead over factual data. Id love to hear more. What distances are we talking? I mean the chances 99% of people will hit anything at or past 50yards (reliably) with a 5” gun let alone something the size of the HCP is slim. My range while shooting the Hellcat Pro tends to be 7, 10, 25yards. From time to time I might see a piece of trash on the berm around the 30yard mark and take a shot at it but I try to stay within realistic ranges when shooting my CCW. I genuinely havent seen any variation in accuracy between the stock barrel, ported barrel or the slightly longer threaded and comped barrel from Apex.

      @@360TacticalSolutions I completely agree. When I hear someone on the internet talking accuracy at distances of 25+ yards, I'm skeptical because someone shooting a pistol that far... chances are they literally can't regardless of the pistol or modification. You can also practice mag changes while using dummy rounds and racking the slide after the mag change. Most competition guns don’t lock back at all and these are guns being ran by some of the fastest shooters in the world. Adjust your grip or get really good at the mag change/slide rack 🤷🏼‍♂️

    NOTE: I'm no data analyst, but I play one on TV.
    It LOOKED like the numbers were corrupted for both the comp & ported tests. For example, if you throw out RD #16, which was a freakishly high 34.37 degrees, with the comp, it seems like the avg muzzle rise would be lower than the ported barrel--which seems to have had a freakishly low number of 0.02 degrees muzzle rise skewing its results downward.
    As you were scrolling through the the numbers, the COMP numbers were 9.91 to 12.43, whereas the PORTED numbers were 12.01 to 15.76. If I'm right, I'm pull a guess out of my butt that the COMP is actually reducing muzzle rise by about 1.2-1.6 degrees more than the PORTED barrel.
    But I could be seeing things incorrectly.
    Thanks for all the great videos. My HCP will be here next week.
    I'm getting the DPM, the Apex trigger, and am on the fence about porting.....the biggest complaint I've read is that the grip is so angular at the back that it can be uncomfortable for some people when shooting.

      Excellent observation. Sadly people don't tend to have the attention spans or interest in deep dives into data. I have a spreadsheet I use to record recoil data for different guns and configurations. The spreadsheet handles the math for me and gives me a true average over longer spans of range sessions. I of course pull out extreme numbers that could be considered inaccurate or things like a flinch or poor grip or whatever. Trying to keep the data somewhat clean, I mean everyone will have different results anyways so I want my personal log pretty true and accurate.
      Last count was 500 rounds recorded on each configuration. Roughly 500, I think ported is like 475 and comped is around 490. The spread between the two works out to a 2 degree difference in favor of the ported gun. The comped version also shows a considerable amount of muzzle dip but ive only been observing that vs actually logging it. I will of course continue to collect data and if anything changes I'll update.
      I did a MCarbo video. It's in my HCP playlist. The MCarbo trigger is ok but the set screw design was a bad idea. In order to adjust it you have to remove the trigger, make the adjustment and then reassemble to see if it's where you want it. Mine stripped out and I ended up taking it out and replacing it with the Type3 Apex trigger. I also installed the titanium striker set at the same time. I would think the spring they use is a heavier spring to compensate for the lighter striker material. I found the best results while using the MCarbo striker set along with the Apex trigger and trigger spring. That combination for me is smoother and has the lowest trigger weight. Id have to go run my trigger gauge to give an exact number and im actually away from my office this weekend. Well worth the cost for the striker

We all went in on the cost of dumping everything. That pit had had signs with rules about not dumping trash or cars or using explosives like tanerite but people did it anyways. Technically most of the land that isn’t national forest land you can shoot on as long as it falls into the states confusing and complicated set of rules. What you end up with is little spots here and there where it’s far enough from the roadway and water sources and there’s a backstop that fits the states requirements and you can use it. In order to access these locations you have to buy a pass once a year that allows you into those areas. The one I go to most of the time is about a 30min drive from town and the closest house is about 15min away. The state closes off more and more of this land every year though

      The issue is far more complicated than that. That land is essentially state owned and controlled by Department of Natural Resources. They are the only ones that can put a gate up and believe me there are dozens of places locally that they have because of people dumping garbage. As far as removing garbage, I bring two 5gallon buckets when I go and I fill them with my casings and anything else that will fit. My buddy took his full size truck out there last year and must have taken a half dozen heaping loads from the gravel pit to the dump. Each time he would go out and spend a day filling his truck and taking stuff to the dump someone would almost immediately dump another truck load of garbage into the gravel pit. By the end of summer it looked worse than when he started and he was out of pocket around $600 in dump fees and his personal time spent doing the right thing. Im all for cleaning up sites like this and its something we have worked on over and over but its a losing battle when the property is owned by the state and the state would rather lock everyone out than to allow people to set up a lock system for the people who are responsible. One of my goals for myself as well as the channel is to get to a position I can buy a piece of property out of town and set up my own range where I can gate it off and have my own range that I let responsible people come use. Land is expensive in WA these days though and im probably better off waiting and buying in a red state
