    On the stream at the beginning of the month, he talked about 631 and pointed out a TikTok video, saying it was “interesting”. I found the video (on my wife’s phone, freaking commies) and she had compared him to Taylor swift and had the idea to look at her sixth album, third track, one minute in. The quote was “and I’ll do it over and over again.” She (and I) were fairly convinced this was the intent. Mostly another call back to the comparison between him trolling his fans and her doing the same.

    The Skybreakers behaving like Nale is kind of the point, I think. Nale is not only the Herald of Skybreakers, he's also a Skybreaker of the Fifth Ideal. He's basically the archetypal Skybreaker. In fact, I think each order save for the Lightweavers, are, in a way, homogenous. Even Szeth, in many ways, act like Nale. He had acted on the orders of the keeper of his Oathstone as Nale acted on behalf of Ishi.

    Speaking as someone from a more recently independent colony, I trust Brandon and I think everyone should calm down. He has not given us any reason to doubt him, and he puts a lot more time, care and waaaay more beta research than the average author.
    I honestly hope he doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about people getting offended. He’s got good instincts, he’s a decent guy and he has a thorough system.

    • @havewissmart9602
      @havewissmart9602 4 месяца назад

      Because Brandon usually doesn't write morally grey characters at all. All our protagonists are straight heroes, especially Stormlight. Mistborn era 1 is the closest to morally grey we find, but even then Kel and Vin were only as violent as they needed to be to fight against the lord ruler(who is probably the most evil non shard person in the cosmere) and the literal god of destruction Ruin. So Brandon talking about colonialism is a bit scary

      @@Mwezi828 present Dalinar didn't remember doing it at all. Since a lot of our identity come from our memories of our actions, the Dalinar in way of kings and wor can't be considered the same person as the guy who burned down the city. Cultivation changed him as a person magically by removing all of his guilt and evi. Not only that Brandon was also sure to include that Dalinar was being heavily effected by the thrill when he made the decisions at the Rift.
      Much More importantly, even when past Dalinar is morally abhorrent, present Dalinar still is a straight hero. He doesn't make any choice that makes the readers uncomfortable. His present decisions are all very morally unproblematic. Present Dalinar isn't forcefully taking over the planet to protect it, which would feel morally grey, even though he is tempted. Present Dalinar doesn't like democracy or beurocracy but still let's it happen.
      Venli and Dalinar are on a path of redemption. Which means they are making more unproblematic decisions during the present. A character doing something bad in the past isn't morally grey. A character making grey decisions during the story is morally grey. Venli in RoW is slowly learning to be a radiant, and tries to rescue lift.
      Brandon never writes any bad people as protagonists. At most, they are on a redemption

    My thoughts on Starling not being able to change were related to her prologue. The Chekov’s gun there for me was her conversation with Frost about starting out human in their life cycle to have respect for the small. She said she didn’t feel she completely understood that yet. Now she’s exiled and stuck human again. I think she did something harmful to those smaller than dragons and this is her making restitution. And obviously having the character growth to finally understand Uncle Ben’s, I mean Uncle Frost’s, lesson of with great power comes great responsibility.

    The discussion on the aviar giving vision in different colors: in Warbreaker, when lightsong says the red lips are nearly the 5th harmonic, in mathematical terms, that only makes sense if the fundamental harmonic is in the infrared spectrum. This new bird could retroactively make that off handed comment make a lot more sense.

    I feel like y'all are talking about convoluted flashbacks and rewinds and here is some info but ignore that for a big chunk of the book, but have y'all read stormlight? It starts with a prologue of the heralds, then a prologue of szeth, before launching into several chapters that entirely ignore those first two big things. Plus the whole series scatters flashbacks and cuts and I always think Brandon handles that pretty well. Idk why anyone is concerned about this.

  • @Haxerous
    @Haxerous 5 месяцев назад +1

    1:02:41 I really wish the colours thing is more than just a heightening thing. For one it doesn't feel appropriate that bonding an Aviar would give you enough investiture to gain a heightening at that level. But more importantly, it's not that cool of a concept. A better power would be the ability to see in UV. Many birds (especially the brightly coloured ones) can do this, and the ability to see in UV or even partially in IR would be super useful for surviving in the wild on those islands. It's a pretty unique power that no other magic system seems to grant and it is much more practical than being able to distinguish slightly different shades of the same colour.

    • @ufgrad2008
      @ufgrad2008 5 месяцев назад

      I’ll be writing about this on the forums, because it’s highly relevant to something I’ve already written about. In short though, Lightsong’s comment about that lady’s red lips being a few shades off from the “5th harmonic” only makes sense if the fundamental harmonic is in the infrared spectrum. So this bird enabling vision in the infrared actually retroactively makes that offhanded comment make much more sense

    1:17:30 Frost is kind of a big deal. Who dares do that to his niece?
    1:26:00 Sunlit Man has already shown that there must be a plethora of planets without Shards but a very high amount of Investiture.

    1:35:00 They lack the metalmind for full FTL.
    1:39:00 They have had centuries to study perpendicularities. They may have methods of boosting them.
    1:40:30 Sunlit Man had a talking metalmind.
    1:47:00 I would have assumed that Dusk uses a ship to travel through Shadesmar.
    1:48:00 Investiture can do strange stuff to people

    Have you guys considered that maybe chapters one and two actually take place before sixth of the dusk. I think the flashbacks could start as early as when his mother explains the meaning of his name. Then it could skip to while he's apprenticing with his uncle. He still doesn't have to change sixth of the dusk much. He'll just add context before it. I think that chapters one and two will feature a much younger Dusk

    My theory with future Cosmere politics is that the factions we are seeing at other planets are the "worst" factions from the planet as they are the ones who would be off planet trying to colonize and benefit from other planets. The nice people either might not have an interest in leaving their home planet or major settlements, or are tied up directly with whatever war is going on and are more directly opposing the other factions. I've been getting the impression that Brandon has been trying to differentiate these colonizer groups from the groups we are familiar with in our current era. The Scadrians reference Southern Scadriap tradition, so maybe it's Southern Scadrial who takes over the Scadrian government in space era or maybe Southern Scadrians are more drawn towards being in the colonizer groups. And maybe for Roshar, the Alethi people are (surprisingly) not the ones so involved in conquering this time. I could be dead wrong but I get the feeling that Brandon is trying to separate the group a bit so it doesn't feel like the direct descendants of the people we read about and love in the current books are the shitty people in the later books.

    Posting unrelated Stormlight Theory here as I want record of coming up with it first:
    Shallan is a personality of Chanarach!
    Chanarachis so crazy after all these 1000s of years that she regressed to a child-self.
    She attempts to come back to sanity, which was viewed by the child-self as an attempt to kill her, and she instead "killed" the past self who "birthed" her. (Hoping the symbolic death is enough to fool the magic and stay consistent with other theories).
    Making her final truth that she is Chanarach!
    Maybe this is why it's worth throwing multiple cryptics at her, despite her track record.
    (for this to work, either the family knows/is confused, or the "mum" light-weaved a fake daughter for a while before the delusion was finalised).
    EDIT initially used the wrong herald name...

    I liked the discussion about dragon size and growth/Growth. While we assumed Dragons to just transform, should there not be some cosmere typical magic associated with it? It could be that Dragons "store" growth/Growth until they transform for the first time. Is there investiture involved, also maybe some Aethers or some "individual" non-Invetstiture associated, non-aether type of magic? I also think that a first transformation rather ends up between regular horse and Ryshadium size. Does any of this make sense? (I think I am definitely not considering some WoBs on this, but just wanted to share my thoughts :) )

    Cant say Starling is my new favorite, simply because we know basically nothing about her or her story. She's interesting, considering what she is and who she's related to. But still a long way to go before entering the realm of favorites. I guess Tress is now taking a back seat as the old new favorite lol. Just sayin, I've noticed a bit of a trend.

    Since naile has been hunting down and destroying people capable of radiance, and he trains the skybreakers to his standards (zeth excluded, his training was more a formality and I wonder how often naile thought of ending him) the only types of skybreakers we are likely to see are like him, and the one exception... zeth, let's hope he dies in book 5 so the order can grow beyond its currently narrow ideals.

    Saying why haven't we gotten any Skybreaker who cares about anything other than the law is like saying we want a Windrunner who cares about any other thing than protecting people.

    • @17thShard
      @17thShard  5 месяцев назад +4

      I think the argument would be like, "Where are the Skybreakers who care that all people are treated under the law, the ones who root out corruption" and such, rather than just "oh what are the local laws, I'll use it to justify myself!" So Alyx and Rasarr would feel like there should be Skybreakers who truly believe in the rule of law, that all people are equal under it.
      Though at least for me I find it weird that the guy isn't like. Restricted by Rosharan law? Wouldn't that supercede local ones, I don't know. -Eric

      @17thShard You got a point, but I think the sky breaker has a point, too.
      If they Join or ally with Roshar, Scadrial eventually will take over that planet. And since apparently Scadrial is the enemy, anyone who joins them becomes they're enemy too.
      First of the Sun definitely has been thrust into a conflict they don't understand and have to pick a side.
      Who caused it? The Ones Above.
      Everything about that chapter implies to me that the Rosharan is trying to undermine Scadrials' expansion efforts
