- Pants, skirts and dresses commonly have inseam pockets for you to enjoy. I am a fan of the type that are anchored to a waist seam or inside a waistband because they are secure and create less bulk.
I am sharing how to sew these types of pockets using all the best practice techniques and you’ll see some variations related to the fabric and the size of the pockets. If your pattern does not have pockets… no worries, let’s make our own easy pocket pieces.
The Sybil Illusion skirt collection (Love Notions) has 7 skirt styles and these types of pockets! The pattern has been re-released to include sizes XS-5X and is $5 Friday the 9th and $10 on Saturday and Sunday.
You can get the Sybil Illusion Skirt collection here with my affiliate link: www.lovenotion...

DISCLAIMER: I don't have a fabric sponsor. I produce sewing content independently from pattern brands and share my unique way of sewing with you, with my own investment of resources. I don’t necessarily follow instructions rigidly. My opinions are honest, especially around fit and sewing techniques.

You are a ray of sunshine in the sewing community and your videos are always very easy to understand.
I love pockets and found your instruction very clear and helpful.
I can now remember to attach main fabric to the back, lining fabric to the front. I used to struggle trying to figure out what went where.
Love from Australia. 🇦🇺❤️
How kind of you to go to the trouble to show such an in-depth tutorial for those of us who love pockets when you yourself don’t like them. Thank you Karina ❤️
No worries, it's not just about what I like. Another thing I don't like are invisible zippers lol.... I will film a tutorial eventually :)
This the best video I have seen regarding pockets. I have been sewing for many years but I still love when I can find videos to make my sewing easier and better! Thank You!
Hi. Greetings from France 💖💐. I am a fan of your prestigious sewing channel on RUclips. Pockets have been a nightmare but after watching your video I thought I could attempt adding pockets to my pants which I am just sewing. But I have a question for you please. When you have the time only, could you make a video on how to add a zip to a side pocket? Thanks in advance. Thanks for sharing caring and making a 72 year old SMILE 🥰😊. A beary hug from my 70kilo water rescue Newfoundland and a big hug of gratitude from me. 👍👍👍💖💖💖💐💐💐🥰🥰🥰
This was a great video! I hadn't even thought of making the pockets bigger. So many pieces have such small pockets, I'm not sure why they put them on to begin with! Now I can go back and make bigger ones! Thank you so much!
I’m am such a fan. I appreciate how you get into the hidden places to us know where to stop and start the stitches.
Thank you for this instruction. My Son wants this kind of pocket in his pj pants, now he will get his wish. I loved all the tips!
Thanks Karina. I need pockets on everything for my insulin pump. Very helpful video
Great video !!! I have never seen to add interfacing to the pocket, I like this concept. Thanks for the detailed explanations.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you from Wales, UK.
Thank you. I'm definitely a pocket person. I like my hands free!
What a great tutorial. Thank you from Wales.
perfect as always. Great instructions. thanks so much for doing this.
Excellent tutorial! I love pockets in everything as I always carry a hanky with me. I didn't know how to incorporate a pocket into a waist seam where the waist has gathers, so that was particularly helpful. Thank you, as always I have learned something valuable by watching you! 🙏
Thank you, Thank You, Thank You 😊
I was so hoping you would do a pocket video someday!! I’ll never do a free hanging pocket again ...I used your link for the Cleo shorts yesterday and put the little pockets in them and they turned out great!! 😍♥️❤️
I’m glad they came out well 😃, it’s always a great feeling.
Thank you so much for the lessons of how to sew😊👍🏻💓🌻
Thank you! I've been searching for a video on this and you've come up trumps again ❤️
Can I adjust the pockets to add them to a simple - two side seams skirt but with an elastic waist?
My Mom is 89 years and no longer can deal with zippers. Thus, I am sewing simple skirts for her; no zipper, elastic (casing) waist , and of course- pockets
Thank you for making this tutorial. It helped me put pockets into my gathered waist skirt. Your covered this in your video and it answered my questions.
Thank you for this excellent tutorial!!
I love this! I am making a skirt in which the side seam doubles as the pocket and opening. Do you have any tips for how to reduce bulk in the waist seam when sewing the skirt to a facing/waistband?
Another great video! Does it matter what your seam allowance is? Would 3/8” be enough?
You usually use the seam allowance the pattern has. My preference is 3/8” and if it’s larger, I’d trim to 3/8” for less bulk :)
Thanks
I’m on the fence with pockets. I like them on some things but I don’t need any extra bulk added to my hips. Thanks for the tutorial as always very informative.
I’m the same. I’ve decided that with skirts that have ease, they won’t add bulk. I’d never add them to pencil skirts or anything fitted to the hips.
Great information, as always.
Pratical and well show'n - I'l try this on a skirt I'm making. Thanks :-)
Another great video! I don’t always do pockets, either but it is nice to know how to do this. Just ordered the pattern with your link. thanks!
thank you for this. I can't carry a purse, I always lose them. so I need pockets :)
Pockets are always a plus for me. Thanks.
Hooray. Thank you.
Pretty clear instructions. Thank you for taking the time and it is always a pleasure to see the results of your work.
Thank you so much
I have to have pockets on everything due to my insulin pump and receiver for my sensor. Also, I have to slit a hole in the fabric of my pockets for my tubing to my insulin pump. It only needs to be 1/4 -3/8 inches. Any suggestions on how to place that opening and how to reinforce???
I would leave an opening (where needed) when sewing around the pocket. Put some interfacing or tape to reinforce it. Hope this helps.
Did you try making a buttonhole for the tubing?
I’d interface the area of the pocket with Interfacing and do a buttonhole big enough for the tube.
Thanks sew much for another excellent video. I bought the pattern with your link.
You’ll have so many skirts to make with it 😀😀
You read my mind!!!!! THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. I have a skirt pattern that has a outer pocket that makes it look frumpy. Soooo
Another great tutorial! Thank you.
You’re very welcome :)
Do they deliver to Switzerland?
I don’t understand your question. Deliver what?
Omg Karina I laughed so hard at the title. I just picture a terrible mutant dress with pockets sticking out EVERYWHERE!
Wonderfull tutorial, really clear instructions. Im with you on the no snip. My daughter has just started her sewing journey. I will defiantly be directing her to your channel.
Brilliant, I love your channel and your amazing sewing knowledge. Will definitely try this… let me just go cry about my snipped pockets on my beautiful linen dress in progress. I didn’t want to snip them but the pattern said I should. 😩
I LOVE pockets❣️❣️❣️Thank you for this video.
I forgot how to sew pockets. Your instructions were perfect. Today I sewed a beautiful pocket. Thank you for your videos. I am watching more and more
Karina, thanks so much for making this video! I have never included pockets in any pants (or skirt/dress) because I have wide hips, so didn't want any added bulk. But, I've found I needed pants with pockets so I can carry treats for my dog on our walks!! My pockets turned out perfectly. I used a stretch woven, and the pockets are flat and smooth, and lovely!!! Again, thanks for all you share with us :) Have a great weekend!
Thanks so much. Very thorough. Much appreciated
Best instructions! Thank you very much!!!!!!!!
You're welcome!
Your ability to teach and demonstrate is wonderful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
This was such good timing to pop up on my you tube feed today - I’ve decided to add inseam pockets to my current make today, for the first time - you’ve shown me the way😂
I am making a lot of casual pants with inseam pockets in order to carry pick up bags for when I’m walking my dog. Thank you for this tutorial!
Thank you! I have to have my pockets! ❤️ I really appreciate all the time that you spent putting all of this information together for us. You are so good at this. That was some beautiful fabric and I loved the purple that you chose for the lining. I agreed with you, I wouldn’t want to snip that close to the pocket anyway, there is a lot of pressure put there. 👍🏼 I really like how you stabilized the pocket area to reinforce that area.
Thank you! I usually avoid pockets but this is encouraging to try sometime. 😊
Thanks for another clearly explained tutorial. By the way I love the fabric you have used to make your coat, it’s gorgeous.
Great video!!!! I was googling this exact thing last week trying to add pockets to my newly drafted pants. Thank you!! I also want the front fancy patch pocket for my next pair of capris.
Thank you. I love the tutorials, you explain it beautifully. I do like pockets on some makes.
Beautiful coat fabric! I love the understitching, I always do it on my pockets.
Love the wist band type pocket. TY for sharing 😊
The Sybil Illusion skirt is such a beautiful pattern! I need to get with the program and mash it up with the Tessa Sheath dress! Thanks for your helpful video. That coat fabric is gorgeous!
I prefer in seam pockets but I am not really a pocket person either maybe because I have a few rolls and I would rather nor accentuate them . Great tutorial Karina .
Wonderful video. Thankyou sooo much.
Brilliant Karina, this is so useful, can I ask what sewing machine are you using.
I can rely on you for the little details. I wasn’t sure what to do with seam allowances.
Great tutorial Karina some great tips will definitely try this you are such a great teacher.
Thank you for all your videos! You are a blessing!
Thank you for the tips. I bought the skirt pattern through your link.
Love pockets. Thanks.
I have mixed feelings but loved making the tutorial :)
Thank you as i love pockets good demo
That looks pretty easy. Thanks!
Great info as usual!
Thank you so much 😀
Yesss love pockets
I’m glad you can add them to your clothes :)
I need pockets! Lol
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
Thank you,!
Thank you!
Thank you
I’m subscribed to your channel and watch all your videos. I’ve learned so much from you! If I could, I’d like to suggest that you somehow try to get rid of the echo when you record. It makes it harder to understand. Maybe laying down a small carpet? Or holding the mic closer to your mouth? Please don’t take offense…maybe there are others that have the same issue. Thank you for all the helpful videos! You make everything so much easier than they seem.
It’s out of my control and that’s why I film outdoors 90% of the time. There’s no echo there. I have a huge rug, curtains… a professional microphone…everything. Sometimes I have to film inside for a thousand reasons. It’s easy to critique and I understand but please know that I do my very best. I film at home. I feel super discouraged with comments like this because I will never be able to have a professional soundproof studio in my home and I can’t film outside 100% of the time.
Try turning on the closed captioning. It's the little CC button towards the bottom right of the video. They are automatically generated so it's not always 100% correct, but it might help you understand better.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles I sincerely apologize if I offended you. It certainly wasn't my intention. It was meant as a kind suggestion and wasn't sure if you were aware of it. I'm so thankful for you and your channel! I can only imagine how hard you work to put these together for all of us. I am using the closed captioning since it was suggested by Katie Roman. Again, I'm sorry if it sounded like a negative complaint. - Alida
What if there is no side seams, but your need to remake and add pockets large, both sides due to medical equipment you have to carry on your person.
This tutorial is for side seams but if the garment does not have them, you could try large patch pockets instead.
You can also do vertical welt pockets if you don't have a side seam. It's a pretty advanced technique so definitely practice before you try it on a skirt for real.
Thanks for all the pocket info. I like pockets on everything. I also really like your thin lining idea on the front piece. It looks so elegant. I will probably be picking up the $5 skirt pattern tomorrow.
