As a person with Type 1 diabetes, whose phone functions as their pancreas, historical pockets are THE BEST. I can stuff my phone in one, and my keys, ID, and some hypo snacks in case my blood sugar tanks in the other and I don't have to carry anything else. It's fantastic. I have a petticoat/skirt that I made last year with this same kind of idea, but there's some things about it that I don't love. This series inspires me to pull it out and make it over into something that I DO love.
I have the same, before I got into sewing much, I just sewed on some short leggings a pocket to put my pump inside:) now I make on every garment either patch pockets (I love the style and rather show off my pump than hide it) or other pockets and even adding some button hole for covering the string. but for skirts and summer dresses I always use to put a legging under. I will definitely make these historical pockets:D such a simple idea that I never thought of
My grandmother made me a pair of pockets when I first moved out on my own 60 years ago. They fit under everything and are to this day some of the most useful items I own.
I successfully followed your first tutorial and made a ridiculously pretty skirt and i made a mock up practice pocket that held all of my essentials (keys, wallet, phone, chapstick) and i didn't need to bring my purse. I have never felt so stylish and so ready for anything. Thinking of making another one to carry my multitool, hand sanitizer, and snacks. Pockets are the best.
@wolfiesun9404 separate antique pocket. It was a real rough mock up, no binding or hemming. But I just wanted something functional so I could wear the skirt out and I had 10 minutes before we had to leave. Worked wonderful and I'm excited to make some nicer ones.
I like a sensible explanation of how and why to do things. I mostly use pockets to carry my phone around and put car keys in. Almost never for snacks. But if you have big enough pockets in a full skirt you can definitely take a couple of cans of cider into a festival without gate security noticing. Allegedly.
I use my pockets SO MUCH. I am a mama to 3 littles. And I regularly shove toy cars, baby bottles, garden snips, random peppers from the garden, trash, etc. my pockets work hard.
Are they the historical packets? How do they work with ordinary clothes? Do you wear them on the out side? I can't think of how they would work otherwise. Please help me understand. Thank you. ❤
Thank you for prsenting all the options. I originally wanted to do attached pockets, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of the historical pockets. No more having to empty my pockets before going in the wash, and kind of like a purse, the pockets are just always ready to go!
I came here because im making a skirt from your first tutorial, and i want pockets in it. I was not expecting seventy billion ideas for how to add pockets but now i am excited about my options 😂
Same. I'm about to go rummage in my scrap bin to make the historical pockets. I've been wanting to make a set since I saw Bernadette banner's video on them, and now I see it here. I've got a fun scrap of purple (fake) brocade that would make a nice pocket front
Ooooh! I'm envious of your 2022 Dumpster Fire Historical Pockets by Sewstine! I like the detachable historical pockets because you can also wear them on the outside of your trousers / skirts (great for jeans with too small pockets). I have yet to make some, though. This Summer I used my not too small pockets (on a pair of cargo pants I made: McCall's M8206) for holding bus tickets, keys, my phone, interesting plant bits or rocks I found, and some change to hand to street musicians or panhandlers.
I'm going to try the historical style pockets, because I think I can use them in a slightly different way even with regular modern skirts. I use an insulin pump so I'm always avoiding skirts and dresses because I have to wear shorts under them anyways. If I make these of a good material I can use them all the time
Excellent way to carry an insulin pump if you're into skirts! The other option seems to be a pocket attached to a bra strap, with the pump sitting inside the bra cup above the breast - but depending on the shape of your bust, and your preference in tops, that can be "unaesthetic".
@@lynn858 I've seen this work for a lot of people! Unfortunately I am not the right shape for it to work for me, it would be too visible through my clothing no matter where I put it, which is a shame because it would be nice for pocketless pants as well. I find new ideas every day though, so maybe one day!
My main pocket contents are always keys, phone, wallet, if I'm leaving home without my purse. If I'm just waddling around at home it's my phone and various crafting supplies. I could never give up my purse though, it has almost everything I could possibly need. A first aid kit, various tools, a sewing kit, pen and paper, tissues, emergency chocolate, a bottle of water... I even have a flint and tinder in there just in case I somehow get lost in the woods. 😅
things in my pocketses: phone, keys for home, cellar, work and bike, headphones, a very small folding knife, a square of fabric for cleaning my glasses, a d20 and my wallet. these are the things that I use every day and that I want on my body at all times when I leave the house. Thank you for the pockets! :)
My favorite style is the detachable historical pocket! Since it's separate, it can be used with any skirt with pocket slits. I've made five skirts and only two pockets, and I have no regrets. When the pocket is on a separate waistband, heavy things don't drag down the skirt drape.
I sent the previous video to my mom and asked her if she wanted a skirt like it and now i'm going to send this one to her and go "do you want pockets???" lol this was so helpful =)
What an array of pockets! I made one pocket on a twill tape to go with the three skirts I ended up making. I do love the fact that I only need one pocket that then goes with each skirt. Mine usually just carries my phone and old leather wallet. Sometimes my house keys too. I have no fear that anything will drop out as the teardrop shape is just such a lovely one for carrying things. I really like how you present your videos. I'm definitely learning and hopefully improving since starting my channel a couple of months ago.... Thank you Ash.
so glad you put this one!! I REFUSE to wear clothes without pockets because I can't remember something that's not attached to me, so it carries my essentials (phone, chapstick, wallet, knife, & keys).
Ok, but now I want to draw a picture of Britannia dual-wielding a metre stick and tape measure! Great video as usual, I've got a lot of pockets to do in the near future so I guess I should get going. As to what I carry in my pockets, well at home it's just my phone, but when I'm LARPing it is water bottle, notebook, pen, in character and out of character cash, basically everything. I broke a belt once, though the historical pockets I had tied on were fine!😅
I love this skirt and I think for moms, with little ones, with tons of little light weight things to carry; this skirt with large pockets would be amazing. Thank you for your videos - wonderful!
honestly I'm a backpack person because I want to carry my whole house around with me so learning to admit that I don't actually need all that stuff on the regular so I can carry smaller handbags that won't mess up my shoulders (as opposed to giant handbags the size of a backpack that will hurt my left shoulder specifically) has been hard. Therefore pockets are still always too small for me, and if anything they only ever get used for keys and phone
Thank you for this! Going to try the attached historical pockets! I personally try to avoid bags in the summer as they can cause sensory issues for me when combined with the heat. Aside from the standard wallet, keys, phone, I tend to carry my earbuds, a pen, and a small fidget toy. I have one pair of overalls that lets me also carry my glasses case, bandaids, a short charging cord, and a small notebook. That being said, I have a friend who wears fantasy-adventurer belt bags on a regular basis, and that seems to be the best solution for holding one’s hoard without dealing with shoulder straps.
I need large pockets to hold my kindle, phone, small knife, vial of salt, measuring tape and wallet. I won't even make or purchase anything skirts or pants pockets. Thank you so much for your tutorial. I love all the different options to try.
Love this skirt, it changed my life! I started with a petticoat for my skirts, and now I am turning my whole skirt wardrobe into this petticoat. Thanks so much! In my pockets I keep: My phone on one side, a hanky, glasses cleaner, lip balm and 2 fidget toys on the other. I have glasses, ADHD, and get nosebleeds. Thanks so much!
This is kind of freaking me out because I literally sat down a few hours ago to start making one of these skirts for the first time and just now realized that I really wanted pockets. Came back on here intending to use your original video to try and freewheel may way through it, but now I don't have to guess! Thank you ;-;
Perfect timing for me, too! I’ve procrastinating on making mine, because I wanted to make pockets but I was having problems wrapping my head around it. Well, Dragon Con starts next week, and I’m running out of time. Historical tie-on pockets it is!
Thank you! My wardrobe is woefully deficient in skirts. I searched & searched for a new church. My old one having gone contemporary - I want choirs & organ & piano music plus more conventional teaching. I found one & while there is no dress code, most ladies are wearing dresses or skirts. I was dreading the waist band darts & zippers plus pockets. I think this will do nicely & I won't feel out of place in my elastic waist pants any more.
In my pockets: driving gloves, sunglasses, wallet, phone, hand sanitizer. Sometimes sunscreen lip balm. I like big utility pockets, but much of the time, I just wear an apron to carry stuff.
I cannot thank you enough for this and your previous video about the no waste skirt. I had been wanting one of this style - but either they were insanely expensive or I'd have to sew it myself from a pattern....and, alas, I am pattern illiterate. So here I am, on a random Saturday, purchasing a sewing machine and making a skirt with your video as a guide. I did make some small changes, but overall same concept. Last eve, I did make pockets, although very different than what you have here, as I did not yet have a video to follow...but they work - I ended up making what looks a bit like a half apron, with pockets at each side, and a bonus, accidental, secret pocket in the middle (stiched half-way up to keep pocket contents left and right instead of falling toward the middle and clumping) - and now I plan to use this to be the item that holds the back of my skirt on - just have to choose whether I want to do grommets or snaps for adjustability....hmmmm..... Again, thanks loads
Is nobody going to say anything about the beautifully embroidered DUMPSTER FIRE on that historical pocket?! I vaguely remember watching a video featuring one of those about 3 years ago... 🤔 Thanks for this video and all the various pocket ideas! 💛🤍💜🖤
I think it's the exact same historical pocket I saw Bernadette Banner do a few years back. It has lived rent free in my head since then, but I never actually tried making one in the same style
Hahahaha, watched this video many times -so much fun! What I put into my pockets - handkerchief, dog poo-bags, gloves, sometimes a beret in case it gets super windy out, safety pins, glucometer, a couple of sweets, keys and mobile phone.
In the 11 months since your comment, I can't believe 🤯 that no one wants to know just why you carry a potato in ur pocket at work? Why, what do you do?!
I have a rule that any new skirt I acquire from a store or op shop must have pockets or I won't buy it! I carry my pone, keys, lipgloss, art supplies, USB and various other bits and bobs that change from day to day. I am an art teacher and I always need to carry something in my pockets. Thank you so much for this tutorial. Now I am excited to give it a go sewing the zero-waste skirt in funky patterns as I can have pockets too. 😊
Thanks! My pocketsies hold what I need when I walk the dog: my keys, poo bags, treats, and a ball. I'm currently making a travel vest with many pockets. Whatever doesn't fit in my carry-on will go into pockets.
Inhaler, keys and phone. Everywhere. Younger Son is autistic and when younger, would try to wander out of the house... So I kept the door locked and the keys with me so we could get out if there was a fire. Or open the door to a delivery driver before they could escape. And now it's a habit to keep them with me. And I haven't locked myself out of the house for over two decades, so that's good! At work, it's work keys, lip balm and inhaler in one pocket, tissues and random stuff in the other pocket.
Just found you, came for the easy to follow tutorials, definitely staying for your jokes/sassy attitude…not sure how much but you made me laugh more than a few times while watching a pocket tutorial 😂 thanks for bringing joy to the internet
POCKETSES. Love this. I always misplace my historical pockets, so putting them in the skirt sounds like a great plan. I have a few skirts I'll want to add them to. :)
I usually carry a purse, but on my regular walking the kids to school trip, my phone in one pocket and my housekey and tamagotchi in the other is about all I need. Can't wait to try this skirt. Also enjoying the silliness in your videos, so much fun.
Every lower-half garment requires a single phone-sized pocket on the right hand side. I've regretted every skirt I've bought since the advent of the smartphone that didn't have such a receptacle. I don't tend to put anything else in lower-half pockets because my dodgy hip objects to too much weight on it. In the winter when I can wear a big baggy jacket, I add my keys, my wallet, and a folded-up-small carrier bag and that'll do me without a bag for trips out that don't require any specific items.
I was so glad to find your video on historical skirts and pockets. I'm a diabetic, and often find myself having to take my insulin injections in public places like restaurants. The open sides of the skirts/ pockets will make those injections much easier and more modest too. (Injections are best in upper thigh or abdomen.) So easily accessible with this skirt! Thanks so much!
Typically I’m carrying my phone and keys, but the largest set I could see myself carrying? Phone, wallet, keys, a ticket for a specific event, a fidget toy, a small multi tool,a bag in case I need to take jewelry off (a risk of clip on earrings), a mask, and maybe chapstick. I get great use out of my pockets!!
I like the historical pockets hanging outside the skirt , so many ways they Can be decorated and in many beautiful fabrics. these would be for my phone , key and dog poobags 😆 Thank you for sharing great videoes 🥰
I put baler twine, pony treats, small tools, phone, and anything small enough that I intend to move from where it is to where I’m going in pockets. And sweet wrappers, etc.
Yay! I've been waiting eagerly! Phone is the major item that makes me want pockets, none of the retail ones are big enough for the current size of phones. Also usually a hair tie or two, headphones, a pen, a charging pack if I'm away from electricity for long, the cord that needs, and anything I need to get from point a to point b but my hands are full (often cat food cans)
I have been adding pockets to my clothes for probably 35 years (skirts, dresses, aprons, shorts). Thanks to allergies, probably the biggest use of my pockets are Kleenex. However, pens, pencils, markers, paperclips, and other things frequently make their way into my pockets, which might be an occupational thing (elementary and middle school teacher). Oh, and keys. Pockets are also extremely handy in the garden.
Pocket contents by destination. All previous items are also included. Home: Phone Errands: + wallet, keys, earplugs, meds Thrifting: + tape measure Work: + Belt carrier w/ box cutter, pen, permanent marker, AND external pocket on belt for water bottle or extra dog leash or vacuum attachments, or anything I need to carry to another part of the house
when I'm wearing a regular four pocketed pair of trousers the arrangement is usually front-right: phone, small knife/multitool and keys with attached torch front-left: wallet and hand sanitiser back-left: handkerchief and clean tissues, back-right: usually empty in readiness for things I might acquire or as a receptacle for used tissues awaiting enbinment on occasion I use my back-right pocket to carry sunglasses (guess how the case got broken) and if I'm wearing a jacket with sufficiently large pocketses I may put an umbrella or water bottle in them. skimming the comments it seems I'm at the upper end of stuff-in-pocketses-ness but internally I feel like I ought to carry more stuff
I use my pockets to ditch my purse pretty regularly, and I put (what I think are) standard items: phone, wallet, keys. I also like pockets for carrying my phone around in my house so I don't forget where I set it and so my podcast will follow me around. And, of course, one always needs a pocket-handkerchief. (I actually do carry these -- embroidered ones, which I inherited from my grandma.) I like patch pockets and inseam pockets more or less the same and use them the same. Patch pockets are a matter of easthetics -- I like them for a mid-century look, especially to play with a bias cut pattern. Otherwise, inseam are somewhat more practical.
I love my historical pockets! In my pocket, I carry a folding fan, because I have hot flashes from menopause, a hanky, a small bag of candy, some lip balm, and eyeglasses wipe in a packet, and when necessary my iPhone. I prefer my pocket separate from my skirts, but I am currently going to attempt to attach a historical pocket to a skirt that I’m going to attach to a bodice for those times when I don’t feel like tying something around my waist. Thanks for the wonderful tutorials! 🙏🏻
Seeing a meaningful comparison of the different pocket options has motivated me to switch over to detachable pockets. When it comes to carrying heavier things (books, water bottles, impulsive groceries, cool rocks I find on the ground, etc) I far prefer a vest or overcoat with large utility pockets. I find it less tiring to distribute the weight over my shoulders than on my waist especially on bloaty days. As sagely stated, ya boi has needs
i have the sewstine raccoon pocket too! it is on me almost daily, carrying my phone, a minimum of one tissue packet, and on occasion i've also stuffed my switch when i couldn't be bothered to make multiple trips to settle myself on the sofa and nest while on my period.
Can't imagine living without pockets! I always have my wallet, mask, tube of chap stick, USB drive, phone, bandana, and a lucky horse chestnut in them (somehow this last one is not a joke)
I put a lot of big pockets in my garments. I usually only carry a handkerchief and chapstick and maybe my phone in there. BUT! I like having the option to carry more, like carrying bottles or cans of drinks, lots of candy, my Nintendo Switch, etc when I am moving around my house and carrying with my hands is cumbersome. I love just packing up all my stuff into my gigantic pockets and relocating! It's just so comforting for me to know I have the capacity should I choose to use it!
Thank for that lovely addition to the first video. I usually put nothing in my pockets except my phone but I want pockets if I have to move around the office or go somewhere without a handbag, so I can put keys or a pass, tissus, my phone, my headphones maybe or my purse (to go to the vending machine for exemple). Once used them to carry a small water bottle and a bottle of sunscreen. At work I had often need to go from on floor to the next carrying a measuring tape, pen, eraser, my computer, gloves etc so the more pockets I had the better.
Being able to just grab my phone, Wallet and keys, to go quickly go somewhere, and just bringing small items with me around the House makes pocket a must for me. Never going back to no pockets
Incredibly late to this, but my pockets regularly carry my smartphone, wallet, keys, Bluetooth earbuds, lip balm and/or lipstick/gloss (if I’m wearing makeup), doggie snacks, human snacks (usually a granola bar), my pill box, a utility knife, and often a pen or two. I also hate purses because I’m the type of person who would lose their head if it weren’t attached, and I also hate being unprepared for stuff. Picking up sewing (and especially historical sewing) to modify/make custom clothing was one of the best things I ever did for myself!
My pockets are basically my handbag! I have my hanky, phone , wallet and keys. I also make mine big enough to carry a paperback. I can also carry a small knitting project like socks. I’ve made several skirts like yours with the historically inspired pockets and your method is way simpler than mine! I will definitely be doing this next time
As an avid cargo pants wearer pockets my pockets can be full of: keys, phone, chapstick, wallet, mechanical pencil, sharpie, occasionally a pair of scissors, or a box knife. Sometimes when I'm out for a long period of time I add my water bottle and granola bar.
Thanks for sharing this with us so we can visualize the different pocket strategies! There are only 2 personal choices I could go on and on about the benefits of, and that’s short hair and ditching any form of purse in favor of the almighty pocket! I keep cards, ID, cash in a small wallet that can also be clipped to my keys, I keep my keys on a carabiner clip so I can clip them on my front belt loop if I want, and then my cell phone. Those are my 3 must haves. Sometimes I also take my tiniest rocketbook and Frixion pen in my back pocket. If it’s winter I’ll also have chapstick, a handkerchief, and a few cough drops in my pocketses and a small refillable hand sanitizer clipped to my keys. I love the look of many purses and am drooling over a backpack purse by loungefly atm, but keeping up with them makes me batty and trying to find things in it is impossible and that’s if I don’t ADHD myself into losing it for months or forever … so yeah long live pocketses! Viva la revolution!
My pockets normally contain my phone and/or my keys. But, if I’m crafting, it could be anything, because I have a touch of “I’ll put this here where I won’t lose it” along with a heaping dose of “out of sight, out of mind”. So, multiple pairs of scissors are totally likely. Thank you for your lovely tutorials. Your style is both enjoyable and entertaining!
I only (currently) have one skirt that I can wear my 18th century style pockets with, but I basically use them (and the skirt) any time I need to pop to the shops or go and socialise with friends and don't want to carry any kind of bag :P
I’m a type one diabetic and I put my insulin pump in one pocket and my phone in the other. You’re right that heavy things, like pumps pull garments out of shape so using my phone as a counter weight kind of works. I’m intrigued with attaching historical pockets to the back panel and having the front lay over them. I can’t wait to try this. Thank you so much for these videos.
On a regular day in my pockets I put my phone, keys, masks, bobby pins, hair tie, lozenges, hand sanitizer, and earbuds. If Im going out foraging I would also bring a pocket knife, cloth and plastic bags (for mushrooms and berries respectively), dog poo bags, and dog treats.
My answer to the pockets question: I rarely carry a handbag around now! I go to concerts, festivals, dinners, to work etc. without any sort of bag more often than not. I can carry my phone, keys, wallet, inhaler, a packet of tissues, a lip balm and a tube of lipstick in most of my dresses or skirts. It's awesome.
So I like to put my phone and a water bottle of some sort in opposite pockets to keep them even. And if the pockets are big/sturdy enough, a power bank and/or my wallet, since I've the reoccurring fear of my bag being stolen. Snacks have been included as well when the situation calls for it.
My pocket loadouts other than phone/wallet/keys is usually include (unused) dog waste bags, dog biscuits, small tape measure, snips, folding pocket knife, and a lighter. I don’t carry it for smoking anything, but one never knows where you’ll need to do a fiber burn test or just fire in general. 😊 The handbag gets the writing implements, notebook, and epipen.
Daily in my pockets: very small pocket knife, nail clippers, chapstick, spin pins (for putting up my long hair if needed), small magnifying glass (i work at a nursery and often need to identify teeny tiny bugs), string, cash, credit card, driver's license, library card, keys, phone. I don't carry a purse unless i need more stuff.
My everyday house/farm dresses cotton/polyester from Woman Within (Print Sleeveless Square Neck Lounger by Dreams & Co. with pockets) an online/catalog for women in plus sizes. I've only recently started wearing them in public, but due to fading and wild prints I will be make my own for public use copying this simple design from a wider range of fabrics and prints/solids in my stash. I wear it alone or layered (tops, leggings) depending on temperature. The generous side seam pockets were the selling point and are lovely for tissues, papers, small odds and ends as I move through the house during the day. If I do a man-tools project they hold screws, parts, tools. The XL size fits my roundness and short body (5'2", short neck) with hem is 2-3" below my knee. No petite option, shorten if desired. I haven't seen any moderate prints for theses from the catalog since I ordered the ones I have now which are large. The wait time for any order is two weeks or more. Perhaps they make them per order...in China. They were well constructed and wash/dry nicely. At first I hung them to dry, then got lazy and tossed them in the dryer which really made them wear and fade. But maybe at 10 years, that's not so bad.
okay I admit I did NOT know the magic "bias binding from a square" trick and you should have seen my face when it became one long strip. WITCHCRAFT (of the best kind)! what I have in my pocketses: telephone, wired earbuds, wallet, keys, painkillers, hand sanitiser, glasses cloth. in the dark ages (my university days) I used to carry a handbag with the above, plus additional mp3 player and kinetic wind-up torch for navigating the unlit forest paths back home, but now my telephone has a light on it and the ability to contain songs 👀 also I totally didn't notice the "4cm to 2 inches" thing as being weird until you pointed it out, and now I feel extremely british
Hi from across the pond (Canada). After sixty years in the city my husband and I flew the nest and moved to rural Ontario. My kids have always referred to me as a pioneer woman, now I need the clothes to fit my title. thank you for the terrific video, I look forward to more.
I'm with you, I like historical detachable pockets best. I wear a singular one almost every day over whatever I'm wearing. It's quilted so quite durable and pretty enough that I don't feel the need to hide it under a skirt. Typically in my pocket I carry my phone, keys, wallet, and sunglasses case. The other things that sometimes end up in my pocket are tea bags, my e-reader, earbuds, snacks, hair accessories, small journal, pens, calculator, small water bottle, cool looking rocks that need to come home with me, the list is kinda endless. As a personal preference I like having a set of hand pockets in my garments then the detachable historical pocket is what I use to actually cary stuff.
What's in my pockets: phone + cards (credit, id, license, etc) + bottle of water (a small one if I'm not out for too long) + keys + maybe earphones + yes, snacks. I do have specific dietary needs so snacks are really something I need to take with me most of the time. I have taken small books, pens,... my dog's stuff too, but it's less frequent. If it's cold season, gloves.
pebbles, acorns, dandelion seeds, butterfly wings, moss, bits of string and always, Puffs tissues. I have a granddaughter, and her pockets are not big enough, so.... Thanks for the video.
As a mom of three.... The historical pockets are AMAZING! I can fold and roll extra clothes for kiddos and put them in my pockets, which just adds to the fullness of the skirt when we go to the park/splash pad in the summer and then when it's time to leave, I "deflate" a little bit 😂😂 also, small Gatorade bottles or my water bottle easily fits in one pocket with a few sewing odds and ends or a small book. In the OTHER pocket, phone, and a men's wallet with my id, money, cards etc., one side ALWAYS is the "purse" side 😂😂 I'm a girly that doesn't like to carry a purse so nice big pockets (whether the historical 18th century or the late Victorian pockets) are a MUST! I also used to work in law enforcement, so my work cargo pants are something I'm used to. If my life can't fit in pockets, then it's excess and not necessary.... Usually. 😅😅😅😅
I use my pockets for my phone and keys. Sometimes a credit card. Maybe a kleenex. Or just my hands to keep them warm if I'm in a cold room. LOL! Loved this! It's the second video of yours that I've watched...and I just subscribed!
Chuckle, am binge watching today, as I'm home sick. I usually do have snacks in my pockets as I have a little problem. Thank You for an informative and well made video.
I was very happy to go sans handbag in my everyday wear memade dress this summer (many costumes previous first day to day dress) phone in one side wallet in the other. This opened up the crossbody wear/weild spot where my purse usually is for a very necesary waterbottle sling.
I loved this overview, and it nudged me closer to making my own historical pockets. Since I started making my own clothing, I now have more clothing with usable pockets. I put my phone, my keys, and my payment cards in them. I have a jacket with an external, free-hanging (only attached at the back top) pocket that is gathered and very roomy. I recently wore it to a work event. I was either going to be very early or very late, so I stuffed a half-knitted sock in it in case I wound up being early. I wound up being late and so didn't get a chance to knit, but I was prepared and still presentable, which was very satisfying.
Key fob, wallet/cards, phone, headphones. I usually walk around with a gifted lululemon bag as a sling, though, like it’s one heavy duty external zip pocket with its own pockets.
Oh my god literally same!!!!! That’s why I came to look for the pocket video.
What kind of pocket did you do? One that was sewn to the skirt or antique pockets? Super curious to know
@wolfiesun9404 separate antique pocket. It was a real rough mock up, no binding or hemming. But I just wanted something functional so I could wear the skirt out and I had 10 minutes before we had to leave. Worked wonderful and I'm excited to make some nicer ones.
I'm working up the nerve to make the skirt, I've only ever made simple masks and small rectangular bags without handles
Pockets are always best in pairs!
Did you pleat or gather?
When do you think you’ll do another split seam petticoat video? I’m dying to see your fancier ideas and it’s killing me waiting 😂
Thank you. ❤
What have I got in my pocket? The Ring of course !
Found it!
I always prefer side seam pockets because the #1 utility of pockets for me is I can put my hands in them.
Yes, I always need a place to put my hands!
Me too
I use pockets for my hankie.
Only fairly recently discovered you, you are an internet delight!
That's exactly what our ancestors would do ❤❤❤
so glad you put this one!!
I put my cell phone in one pocket, my wallet/documents in another, the keys in a third one. This way I don't need to carry a bag or purse.
honestly I'm a backpack person because I want to carry my whole house around with me so learning to admit that I don't actually need all that stuff on the regular so I can carry smaller handbags that won't mess up my shoulders (as opposed to giant handbags the size of a backpack that will hurt my left shoulder specifically) has been hard. Therefore pockets are still always too small for me, and if anything they only ever get used for keys and phone
And lipstick 🥰
Phone, purse, work swipe, keys are what go in my pockets
This is kind of freaking me out because I literally sat down a few hours ago to start making one of these skirts for the first time and just now realized that I really wanted pockets. Came back on here intending to use your original video to try and freewheel may way through it, but now I don't have to guess! Thank you ;-;
Perfect timing for me, too!
Thanks for this video and all the various pocket ideas!
I carry my phone and lip balm. Always. Occasionally a small wallet and my keys. And when at work, a potato. That's what I put in my pockets.
In the 11 months since your comment, I can't believe 🤯 that no one wants to know just why you carry a potato in ur pocket at work? Why, what do you do?!
😂
I have a rule that any new skirt I acquire from a store or op shop must have pockets or I won't buy it! I carry my pone, keys, lipgloss, art supplies, USB and various other bits and bobs that change from day to day. I am an art teacher and I always need to carry something in my pockets. Thank you so much for this tutorial. Now I am excited to give it a go sewing the zero-waste skirt in funky patterns as I can have pockets too. 😊
I'm always excited to find a pocket deep enough for my EpiPen, that's probably the least common thing I carry about
I have an autistic son too, and for years I had all the keys of the house (doors, pills cupboard, electric box, laundry ) on a cord around my neck.
That bias loop blew my mind!
Pockets... even my 5 year old niece wants pockets. Thank you Ash, looking forward to all the pocket content 😊
Chapstick! I'm addicted to chapstick and always need to have one on me at all times.
I need a pockets, pockets, pockets meme now
Typically I’m carrying my phone and keys, but the largest set I could see myself carrying?
I'm a "phone, wallet, keys" in pockets; if I need anything else, I'll likely carry a lot more and it will all be in a backpack.
(lovely to see you!)
I have one of her dumpster fire pockets in it’s larvae form as well. Hopefully I can get motivated by this to sew up a pocket 3:34
When I do have something in my pockets, it's usually either string or beads, both of which I use for making bracelets.
Pocket contents by destination.
All previous items are also included.
Home:
Phone
Errands:
+ wallet, keys, earplugs, meds
Thrifting:
+ tape measure
Work:
+ Belt carrier w/ box cutter, pen, permanent marker, AND external pocket on belt for water bottle or extra dog leash or vacuum attachments, or anything I need to carry to another part of the house
when I'm wearing a regular four pocketed pair of trousers the arrangement is usually front-right: phone, small knife/multitool and keys with attached torch front-left: wallet and hand sanitiser back-left: handkerchief and clean tissues, back-right: usually empty in readiness for things I might acquire or as a receptacle for used tissues awaiting enbinment
on occasion I use my back-right pocket to carry sunglasses (guess how the case got broken) and if I'm wearing a jacket with sufficiently large pocketses I may put an umbrella or water bottle in them.
skimming the comments it seems I'm at the upper end of stuff-in-pocketses-ness but internally I feel like I ought to carry more stuff
I just had to stop 2:24 in to tell you how much I love the dumpster fire embroidery!!!
YESSS POCKETS!!!!!
(I actually do carry these -- embroidered ones, which I inherited from my grandma.)
I like patch pockets and inseam pockets more or less the same and use them the same.
Thanks
Viva la revolution!
excellent pocket information, plus, the bias tape creation was the clearest explanation I've ever encountered! Could we get that bit by itself?
My pockets normally contain my phone and/or my keys. But, if I’m crafting, it could be anything, because I have a touch of “I’ll put this here where I won’t lose it” along with a heaping dose of “out of sight, out of mind”. So, multiple pairs of scissors are totally likely.
Thank you for your lovely tutorials. Your style is both enjoyable and entertaining!
Best explanation and video of how to make bias tape via the spiral tube method! I may actually be able to do it now. Thanks!
Excellent demo on bias strips.
So I like to put my phone and a water bottle of some sort in opposite pockets to keep them even. And if the pockets are big/sturdy enough, a power bank and/or my wallet, since I've the reoccurring fear of my bag being stolen. Snacks have been included as well when the situation calls for it.
I love when my favorite YTer support another favorite YTer!
My everyday house/farm dresses cotton/polyester from Woman Within (Print Sleeveless Square Neck Lounger
by Dreams & Co. with pockets) an online/catalog for women in plus sizes.
WITCHCRAFT (of the best kind)! what I have in my pocketses: telephone, wired earbuds, wallet, keys, painkillers, hand sanitiser, glasses cloth. in the dark ages (my university days) I used to carry a handbag with the above, plus additional mp3 player and kinetic wind-up torch for navigating the unlit forest paths back home, but now my telephone has a light on it and the ability to contain songs 👀
also I totally didn't notice the "4cm to 2 inches" thing as being weird until you pointed it out, and now I feel extremely british
THIS. So helpful, as I am in the process of making some teaching clothes and was casting around for ideas!
pebbles, acorns, dandelion seeds, butterfly wings, moss, bits of string and always, Puffs tissues.
Cell phone and Tinker Bell 😊
I was very happy to go sans handbag in my everyday wear memade dress this summer (many costumes previous first day to day dress) phone in one side wallet in the other. This opened up the crossbody wear/weild spot where my purse usually is for a very necesary waterbottle sling.
Thank you. Your explanations are very clear.
