- Have a table top that wont take the stain evenly or is just a veneer with MDF underneath? This DIY will help you fix that! We used General Finishes Java Gel Stain on the two table tops shown in this video. Most Gel Stains take 6-8 hours to dry, it may take longer in cold or humid climates. Make sure to always follow manufacturer safetly recomendations when using any type of stain or polyurethane.

Thank you so much for this video... I youtubed about 100 videos on how to stain a table and failed just about on every single one of them... the original stain of my coffee table would not come off... but the corners were all chipped in a very light color... this covered all the light spots... wish this was my first video
Glad it helped!
I love the plastic bag💝I like to use what I have👍The table looks awesome👍
That Gel, looks like it realy works well, much better then the oil that I have used!!
It's great! I love it.
I LOVE java! Redoing my kitchen table with it.
I just use a wax free shellac (spray can), three light coats and finish with a few top coats of an oil poly, comes out beautifully and absolutely no color lift that way!!!
Would you suggest adding a wood conditioner on raw wood before applying gel stain? Thank-you
Thank you for taking the tine to respond to my challenge. I also tried sanding it to bare wood and tried lightly applying del stain abd it still looks like brown with all the grain covered. I am waiting for the weather in Chicago to warm up a bit and then will completely strip tbe door. I really like gel stain but have not had much success. If you live in Chicagoland i will pay you to refinish the door.
Dionysus Papadopolous I live in Utah. I am sorry. If I were closer I would come help you out.
Great video. I used it on my kitchen cabinets and made the mistake of using a nylon brush and ended up with brush strokes. I didn't wipe it off. So I had to sand it down and then start all over. I should have seen this video first.
Great teacher, awesome job! Thank you
Turned out beautiful
How do you apply gel stain and poly over a starburst table top? Do you have a tutorial on it? Thanks!
Gorgeous color!
I love this video. I found the same table and chairs. I’m looking for information about the dining table and chairs, could you give me any information that you know about the style?
looks phenomenal 😊
Love, love, love your work.
Jeannie Alford thanks!!!
Very nice Jami. I’ve seen this video a couple of times and love your easy tutorials. GF is a great product. Love ❤️ it!
I did my first project this past week . I have a large oak table that I stripped down then put layer of Poly on it and sanded with 220. I started putting on my coats of Java but it looks a little streaky? I want to still see the wood grain but want it a little lighter then gow yours turned out.
Do i have to sand all the way down and start over? Should i just sand lightly and then put more coats on?
You could do a white wash over it to lighten it. It’s hard to say without seeing it in person.
I’ve never used a gel before. I have just sanded an old oak table top down to bare wood. I would like a dark black but can’t find black stain anywhere. If I use several coats of a dark or black gel will the wood grain still show. I live the grain on the oak top.
So I’m preparing a medium golden oak desktop for gel stain and used 320 grit sandpaper for the top. Is that to fine and should I go over the surface again with a lower grit like 120 or 220? I found that there is quite a bit of dust in the grain from the 320 so was going to use some tsp to clean before staining. Thanks for your help. Nicki
Can I use jell stain on white paint. What to stain the stairs hand rails.
I know this video is 5 years old but I'm hoping your still active , I tried gel staining a wood spice rack , had problems from the start , literally had no time to wipe off after applying? I live in the high desert, extremely dry weather but the day I started staining it was in the mid 70s and my gel stain dried before I could wipe ? I had to re-sand to get the over dark spotted stain off , tried again to stain still having problems getting uniform stain ? Any thoughts or advice you could give me ? Would very much appreciate it , thanks
Love this! I just picked up some of the java gel, also found out my table I bought is mdf with a pine vineer. Do I need to use stripper to get the top layer of urathane off bc I’m afraid if I sand to much it will take veneer “wood look” off. I’m so worried I’ll mess it up. Also redoing my hutch and the top part has a trim which matches my table except prob satin coat. Do I need to sand this or can I just clean it or strip and then add the gel stain. Please help! Thanks
Hello. I’m considering a gel stain for my kitchen cupboards. They are stained an oak color with Polly over them and are made of tongue and groove pine. What do you think ? I would like either a light gray. Or white wash ? Suggestions please
I have tried gel stain on several projects all with limited success. In all cases they were prefinished pieces that I sanded with 200 grit sandpaper and followed up with 400 grit sandpaper. I did use shellac before applying the gel stain as I wanted an even color. I tried three different color s from American finished and in all cases it looked like a painted surface when it was finished. I sanded in between coats and used either your gloss or statin finish. I like the concept and everything I see in the videos looks great. in practical application I get very different results. I am open to any suggestions, please.
Dionysus Papadopolous on raw wood I put it on in thin even coats. I also use General finishes it's the best. But if you want to see the grain and you have raw wood I would suggest using regular stain.
Dionysus Papadopolous Don't seal the wood before you use this gel stain, only a pre-stain conditioner, let sit for about 10minutes and wipe dry. Then stain the wood with with GF gel stain, after it's completely dry use a non-wax shellac (Zinsser bullseye spray shellac) in three light coatings and finish with a regular polyurethane. Comes out really beautifully.
Your not getting good results, because you are sanding with fine grit sandpaper, and that essentially polishes, or seals the wood, so it will not accept the stain properly. I would not sand past 150 grit on hardwoods such as oak, and hard maple, and on softer woods like poplar, I would not sand past 180 grit.
General Finishes recommends sanding with 120 grit, then 150 grit, and also you can use a slip coat of mineral spirits to make the gel stain spread more evenly. So if you have sanded past 180 grit, go back to a more courser grit sandpaper like 120, or 150 to open up the wood so that it can accept the Gel stain, just do not sand past 180 grit, hope that helps.
Did you not wipe the gel stain off after applying it? Do we not have to, or did you miss that in the video?
Great video, thank you! I used gel stain to refinish my kitchen table after accidentally spraying it with bleach cleaner. I used the same stain you used in this video and it came out great. When I apply the general finishes water based top coat, do I sand it before the first coat or just in between coats? Please advise. Thank you!
Depends on how smooth you want it. I would do a light sand on the first coat so it has good adhesion but we don’t usually sand after the first coat
LOVE THE JAVE
looks great!
I have a beautiful real wood table but the top seems to have some kind of fake wood and it has chipped a little. How can I fix this? Can I sand it down. This is a very expensive table and I don't want to mess it up.
I just got back from buying my gel stain so I could do this. The guy there told me to let the stain cure for one week before adding the polycrylic coat. Did you wait this long and if not have you seen any issues? Thanks and love your video on this, made it look so easy for me! 😀
Did you buy General Finishes or minwax? General finishes I only wait 6-8 hours
I bought general finishes gel stain in java. And for my sealer, I bought rust-oleum varathane water based polyurethane.
+Alison F I only wait 6-8 hours. Unless it's really humid it takes longer.
Thanks for helping 😀🌹
Hi... This ended up beautifully... If I want a lighter finish... What would be my options? I have a beautiful table... It has been painted on top but I want to take that off and just have a lighter wood finish on top... Thank you!!
You might be able to sand down to the natural wood and use a light stain color, or just seal. We used gel stain on this project because the mdf was so damaged it had swelled through the veneer and we weren’t going to get a consistent color with traditional wood stain
What to you use for a top coat on table and chairs with java gel stain?
Hi Jami, thanks so much for the video!! I am wanting to use this on my dining room table!! I just have a question about using the gel stain over chalk paint. A) Can you do it and B) should you sand the chalk painted piece first or remove the wax?! Thank you so much for your feedback!!!
Depends on how long the wax has been on there. The rule is to always wax last….but I break that rule all the time with great results. Just know that it can go bad and you may end up sanding down anyway.
I am staining pine base board that I polyurethaned 20 years ago should l light sand
Can you use a wax finish over the gel stain or do you have to use a poly finish? I am doing my first project which is a coffee table. Thanks in advance!!
I've had bad times with General Finishes stuff & they have no phone number to contact them. After putting the Java on the surface, I masked it off for the next process. When the tape came off, so did the finish.
Jami ,
How long has it been since you stained the table? I want to know how well it held up , being it's a dining room table and going to be used quite often..... thanks
I’m not sure since I sold it pretty quick but I never heard a complaint from the customer so I’m assuming it’s doing ok.
I have a particle board table where the veneer and pressboard underneath has bubbled/lifted due to water damage. My plan is to sand the table so it's smooth and level, clean off the table with tack cloth, then use a gel stain to restain and cover up the imperfections. Any suggestions/ideas?
It’s me again with yet ANOTHER problem!!
Upon applying the gel stain, it started to become tacky around the edges.
There are now these darker, “drag” type marks.
I also decided not to let the stain sit.
So once I began wiping off excess (with a very light hand), it started leaving lines in the wood. To be honest, I’m just not loving this product and I’m super bummed about it. But I have tried so many different methods and I just can’t seem to find my technique. I feel like crying right now. 😭 lol
I'm guessing it's dried by now, if you're going to wipe it back you want to do that as you go so as to not get unevenness. Sorry to hear you're having struggles!
Jami Ray Vintage
I think I just need some practice. It’s gotta be user error, as I’ve heard so many wonderful things about this product!
Thank you!...You’re an absolute angel
thank you
is gel stain better than regular oil based stain? I have sanded my coffee table down but there are still may spots that will not sand down to the wood.
What did you seal it with
Hi, can u paint over the gel stain if I want to lightly sand the detailed areas and have the brown showing thru ???
I have two end tables that I was originally going to do a dark stain on top with a white base. Then when I saw your bleached wood video I thought I would try that. After sanding, the top of one of them has several dark stains and I also accidentally chipped some of the veneer with the sander. I used a little wood putty and decided to try my original plan and use the Java gel stain. Will it cover over wood filler or will I need to paint the whole thing? A while back you said you couldn't stain wood filler or Bondo but I noticed in one of the answers here you said it would cover Bondo so maybe gel stain is the exception.
Yes, it will hide the wood filler nicely. Painting the whole thing is also a good option that I use often when tops have veneer issues.
Can i use on veneer. I have a beautiful Rockford company jacobean style and I believe the top has a somewhat thick veneer. The rest is all solid wood
Yes, I would sand it a little to rough the top up but you don’t need to sand a lot.
Do I need to do any special preparations for a water stain?
Hi Jamie,
I want to update my hardwood floors which are worn and have a few pet stains (blackened areas). I don't want to have them sanded down. I was considering minwax polyshades which can be used over surfaces that have been previously stained and polyurethaned. Then, I saw that this "gel stain" product can be applied over previously stained and polyurethaned surfaces as well. I'm wondering which I should do? Do you have any suggestions or input on this dilemma? If you suggest the gel do you know how the "charcoal gray" looks over a light/medium brown stained floor? I don't want a reddish brown.
Thanks,
Christine
The gel stain can cover over old finishes but I worry that doing it on a floor may not be durable unless it’s sanded down. I’ve never used it on a floor so I hesitate to say if it would work or not without sanding.
I need help I use gel stain on an oak table ... sanded it and then poly or stained it nothing but bubbles I sanded the whole table over again and around the edges of the table it took the stain off it don't know what I'm going to do help me it's not my table
Have you tried applying the sealer with a foam brush or roller? Also if it’s cold it will bubble so we put a drop cloth down and seal indoors if the garage is cold. A blow dryer can also help to get bubbles out of sealer.
Hi Jami! Is 1/2 pint of the Java enough to stain an 8 ft table top? 🤦🏼♀️
It’s pretty thick and sometimes takes multiple coats. I would say at least a pint
@@JamiRayVintage thank you! Ordering extra now. 😊
Would you suggest the same method if you only have a few spots to fix? My table got ruined with those oil plug ins and there are two small spots where the wood finish is exposed? Thanks
I don't know without seeing it but if the color is close enough you could touch it up and ten reseal that top
Jamie,i am working on a dresser redo that i chalk painted and used dark wax to antique it ,can i also use top coat to seal it and what do you recommend.
Typically wax is last. It acts as a resist for top coats. You could clear wax over it. On a dresser top I would do 3 coats of wax, buff it well in between and let it cure for 30 days before setting things on top
I don't know if anyone will know the answer to this, and I have been researching for days! I have a dining room table that has pretty large white marks on the top ( from heat, I'm guessing). I have tried all the tricks to remove these, and a couple did seem to work, but later the marks returned. I thought about using gel stain, but I am guessing the white spots would still show through?
You can iron over it with a towel between the iron and the table and it will usually remove it. Turn the steam off and use a high heat setting. Don’t leave the iron in one spot too long. You don’t want to burn the table.
I have a large tv entertainment unit that is I think laminate...it has a light pine color wood look with texture like contact paper so is that laminate or MDF or is that the same thing? Can I use regular GF gel stain on this or am I limited to using chalk paint? Do I need to first use a primer like bin or no primer? I've used the GF in Java to refinish my real oak kitchen cabinets & it came out beautiful...Since my tv unit is not real wood I wasn't sure if the gel stain would dry...any suggestions? I have half a gallon of the java left!
It will dry, I would wait the recommended time to cure before using it though. I think it’s 30 days. It’ll say on the side of the can. Probably not s bad idea to use an additional top coat over the gel stain for extra durability.
I wouldn’t use a primer.
That's beautiful. Does it hold up well to using it for eating on? Cups, etc??
It does, but it needs to cure before use so that it can harden.
How long would you suggest letting it cure before using?
Melissa Geittmann We’d tell people not to use it for a week when we were refinishing tables all the time. If you use a product like polycrylic it says on the can that it can take up to 30 days to cure. Most products will tell you cure time on the instructions on a can.
I have a question, a friend of mine has a HUGE bookcase (10ft by 5ft) that she wants refinished, it has veneer on the sides and top but I believe the rest is wood, it has glass doors (with wood trim) She wants it a very similar color to what it is now, is this something I could use Gel stain on? it is an Old built-in from a schoolhouse library, I think it is coated in varnish
It should work great. If you can, rough the surface up a little with a light sand paper. 120-220 grit should work great. Make sure to let the gel stain dry really well and then seal it. it might not be a bad idea to try a small spot first since it is a built in.
Thanks!
Can I use gel stain over a thickly poly-coated table top? I have a table that I ruined. It is covered in light scratches from wicker charger/place-mats that I - unfortunately - used on the table a long time before discovering what they were doing to it. Now, it is all scratched up (light scratches but all over). It looks to be heavily coated with polyurethane or some top coat. I would like to repair it. It is our only table and matches our decor perfectly. Is that possible?
Or Is there anything available as a top-coat to apply that will fix light scratches?
What would you recommend?
Thank you in advance.
You can use the gel stain over other finishes but it’s still a good idea to do a little sanding and rough the surface up so to help the gel stain adhere.
I have cherrywood table I stained wrong I need advice please
Stained wrong as in wrong color or is it splotchy?
Have you ever had any issues with stain lifting when doing the top coat? I have seen where they suggest using shellac first. I am using it over laminate.
Morgan Leslie Bepristis I haven't. It needs to be completely dry.
Q
Morgan Leslie Bepristis I just use a wax free shellac (spray can), three light coats and finish with a few top coats of an oil poly, comes out beautifully and absolutely no color lift that way!!!
What do you do if there are gauges/scratches in your piece? If you fill with wood filler, will it take the gel stain the same way?
If they aren’t too deep we sand them. Wood filler will take gel stain but sometimes you can still see the scratches because it doesn’t take the stain the same way the wood does.
do I stain top table first or paint legs first, tape off, im doing a hall table, bottom half old antique white, and top dark walnut gel stain
I like to paint first, then stain. Just be careful if you’re using a rag to apply the stain that it doesn’t flop over the edge onto your paint.
I used the java gel stain on my kitchen table. I believe it’s mdf with veneer in top. I roughed it up and it looks amazing, but it’s been 24 hours and it’s still not dry. Is this normal? I’m afraid I’ll forever have a gorgeous table no one can touch lol
Depending on temp and humidity and how thick it is that’s normal. I think the can says to allow up to 30 days cure time.
This sounds similar to antiquing that I did many years back. Is it the same with maybe improved product?
It acts like a glaze but it’s really thick so it can sit on top of other stains if need be.
Can I do a gel stain over a painted surface?
Yes you can.
What's your experience with Minwax gel stains? I don't think my local hardware store sells General Finishes and I don't want to wait if I order it. (I have a pine dresser I am finishing and the oil stain tests I've done just aren't getting as dark as I would like.)
Tim Shawcroft I have and I don't like it all. It's worth the wait.
Beautiful!! I didn't even know there was such a thing as gel stain..lol, my 'newb' is showing 😆
That round tabletop with the star pattern - that's my table. Hard to go with the grain on that. Where can I find a tutorial for that one?
I just go left to right with gel stain. If it's in good shape I just sand off the finish and use regular stain. Then you just rub it in.
what so you do if you have some areas that dried bumpy from not wiping enough off while wet?
Laurie G once it dries hard you can hand sand it smooth with 220 sand paper. And then do one more coat
I'm refinishing a table with sections of oak with grain running in different directions. Do I wipe it off following the grain?
Tom Knorr I just choose a direction and go with it, if you can match the grain even better
The color of the dresser I want to use GF on is a green type stain from the seventies. Just wonder if it will cover it,had to sand quite a bit because it was full of stickers,so part of the bare wood is exposed. Does anyone know the answer to this problem ?
Anna Allen it sounds like the finish is really uneven. You can use gel stain it will take lots of coats. Or what I would do is do one coat of gel stain. Then seal it. Then do two more coats.
I'm wanting to do Java gel on my table top and paint the base. Would you recommend painting first? Or doing the Java gel top first?
Amber Withycombe I paint the base and do Java second. If you are brushing I don't really think it matters. When I spray I have to spray the base first then I can remove any overspray before I gel stain
which one polyurethane, polycrylic
Natalie Woodley polyacrylic by minwax its water based
Do you think the gel stain in a lighter color like gray would cover as well without sanding?
They have a gray that covers really well.
My surface was sticky when I began to wipe, is that normal?
Which surface?
@@JamiRayVintage post painting over a desk that had primer on it
What do you do if you have a veneer table top with multi directional wood grain?
That’s tricky. What you can try is wiping the gel stain back and doing layers instead of leaving it thick in one coat. That way you don’t lose the wood grain.
afterstain do I put a wax clear finish and does annie sloan paint be ok with another brand wax fini
I don’t use Annie Sloan but to my knowledge you can put other finishes over it.
Can you use this over veneer?
Yes
the table at 4:04 min are you still able to see the pattern once you gel stain?? I have the same table and it def does not look like your after picture. How many coats did you use on that?
We put a lot of coats on for a thick finish. The wood grain was very faint afterwards.
@@JamiRayVintage ok...don't mind if it's faint....Thank you so much...one coat def doesn't cover it! Thanks again!
I have a spot on my table that had to be sanded down to bare wood. The remaining finish has been lightly sanded. Can i gel stain the table with the bare spot??
It should work. The key to gel stain is allowing it time to cure before heavy use if you aren’t going to sand down to raw wood. I think the directions say it can take up to 30 days to cure.
I applied my first coat of gel stain against the grain how Dino I fix this ? Do I sand it all off or can I go the correct direction with the second coat this piece is my kitchen table
I would sand it off once it's dry. I have never done that so I am not sure what would happen if you applied the second coat the right way.
or you could use lacquer remover. Its faster and easier.
Building a table for a client. They want a dark top and white legs. I was thinking of using hickory but as it is so dense it will not get dark enough. I also like to complete my projects with Waterlok - 3 coats of penetrating oil then at least 2 satin. Can I finish as described using General Finish gel stain? Thank you Terry
Terry Mengel I don't know because I haven't used those products. But I bet you could email general finished and they would tell you.
Have you ever used the stain with the poly already mixed in it? I used it in shade ebony, and I redid a chair which turned out amazing. I have a desk that I want to redo as well, but that’s way bigger than a chair. Also, with the stain+poly, would I be able to put another coat on without sanding? Or since it has poly in it, would I have to sand?
I have used it a couple of times. I didn’t love the results. Could have been the brand I used
Jami Ray Vintage so would you recommend just the minwax stain and then the minwax poly? I really do like how my chair came out, and it was the first time I’ve ever done anything like that. But after watching your videos, I really wanna do what you would prefer. You’re really good at it. Lol
Also, if there is some type of stain you would recommend that would be good without sanding, and will actually change the color of the wood, I’d prefer that. Something I can pick up at Walmart?
We used the minwax for years with great results.
Jami Ray Vintage is that something I will have to sand with?
So before I put my polycrylic on I should sand it? Do I stand lightly?
Only if you want to sand. It isn’t required. Sometimes I sand to smooth brush strokes out or distress the piece to add some age to it.
Well I didn't sand and when I put the poly on it made it look like it was water stained, what did I do wrong then? I stirred the poly acrylic before I used it?
lol, that ziploc bag for a glove makes me laugh
Lol. Use what ya got!
can you use any gel stain to get table darker
Natalie Woodley yes. If it's way light it may take a few coats
Do you wipe it off between coats? Maybe I missed that.
Not on this one. We let it sit and dry between coats. If I don’t want full coverage and want it to act more like a stain I wipe the excess off.
I have a dining table that is not wood (I got scam with this one) and is swollen in the middle how can I fix it ?
You can sand it down, it will expose the mdf grain....but sand it and then you could use all purpose bondo or even some resin to smooth the mdf out and then gel stain over that so that it looks uniform. If it’s really bad I would probably paint it and give it a heavy distress.
Im staining a bookcase ...do i have to use a top coat?
TRAVIA M absolutely. You will want to let it cure a week before you put anything on it.
Have you used any other gel stains besides general finishes? I see there are others that are cheaper in price.
Yes, and I’ve not been as happy with them.
can I use this on fake wood
lynn garland yes
How long did this project take? It takes so long to dry! I have no idea how long it would take for the poly coats to dry either.
+Brittany Wickliffe it depends a lot on temperature and humidity. We typically like to let the first coat of gel stain dry over night and the poly coats get about 2 hours of dry time between applications. Most Polyurethane manufacturers say it takes a full 30 days for polyurethane to cure hard but we've had good luck waiting a week before heavy use.
+Jami Ray Vintage Good to know! Thanks.
Would you use gel stain on a laminate after sanding down?
Yeah you can, let it dry well between coats.
Can you see grain at all through the gel stain?
Yes and no. It depends on how thick it is applied. If it’s too thick it can completely cover the grain
Would this stain work on glossy furniture like the laminated stuff?
fifitis03 it will. Lightly scuff it up with a sanding block and then brush it on. It will take multiple costs and patience. 6-8 hrs of drying time in between. And then be sure to seal it well and wait at least a week before you use. It won't hold up as well as wood but it definitely can be done
Jami Ray Vintage ok I'll give it a try, thank you so much for taking the time to write back, love your work.
do you sand in between each polyacrylic coat?
We usually just buff the last coat. Sometimes if it’s too hot outside sanding is needed to smooth it out in between coats because it doesn’t self level well but usually it’s not a problem.
I’m doing a custom order piece and I did my research and it says to not use a water base poly acrylic, what is the best sealer that you use for the gel stain? I want to make sure I do it right and it’s sealed good!
We use water based sealers on everything. Just make sure if your doing it over an oil based stain that the stain is dry before applying the sealer.
can I use paint on a dining table what can I use to protect it
Natalie Woodley yes. I suggest sanding the top well if you are painting and then using 4-6 coats of poly. Allow a week to cure and a month before Amy heavy use/scrubbing
Thank you so much for this video! I just purchased my first can of general finishes gel and I love the color that’s first applied. It’s very rich and opaque. However as soon as I wipe it off, it’s much lighter and that’s not the look I’m going for.
I did notice that you didn’t really wipe it down afterwards. It looked like you used the same rag that you applied it with, to smooth it out a bit. Unless I missed something.
I guess my question to you is...do I have to wipe off the product or can I let it sit?
I’m using the oil based gel stain.
Thank you so much!
You don’t have to wipe it off. You can let it sit. It will take longer to cure if you leave it on thick.
Jami Ray Vintage ohhh my gaaaawsh!!! I freaking LOOOVE you!!! Thank you soooo much!!! I have tried so many dang stains and after tons of research, I learned that this was THE stain of all stains. I saw so many vids of it looking so dark, so I was suuuper disappointed when I wiped it off and saw how light it was. This is such a big help. Especially because I thought I was going to have to resand AGAIN and go back to the first product I used, which was the Polyshades.
LAAAST question...I know for this piece you were going to use GF water based poly and I’m just wondering what the difference is between that and their oil based poly. Performance wise.
Thanks again so much Jami!!
Oil based polyurethanes can yellow your finish. I found Sweet Pickins Top Coat about a year ago and it’s mostly what I use on big pieces of furniture.
A word of caution leaving the gel stain thick. I think it It says on the can it can take 30 days to cure. Live by that. If you have to use it sooner than 30 days be gentle and use a table cloth.
Jami Ray Vintage Sweet Pickins Top Coat. Got it!
I’ve now read this GF can 3 times and there aren’t any directions for leaving it on. So thank you for the info on cure time. I wouldn’t of had a clue.
Because I’m leaving it on, do you recommend applying with a cloth, bristled brush or foam brush? Not sure if it makes a difference. But I just want to be safe.
That’s my absolute LAST question; I promise!!
Btw...really enjoyed watching you and hubby videos! You guys have given me so much inspiration! So thank you for that and for all of your help...AND patience! 😉
I always apply it with a lint free rag.
Can you use gel stain over enamel paint ?
Yes, but if the paint is in poor repair (chipping, cracking) the gel stain will reflect those imperfections.
This looks good, but I’ve worked with general finishes, and all the pieces I’ve ever tried to do come out absolutely horrible. Maybe I’m just so used to sanding all the way down to natural wood first, then staining. This is just more like painting, doesn’t look as nice
I agree, I don’t love gel stain as an option but the veneer was bubbling so bad it was about the only option. That or actually painting it. 😂
Have a great day!
