    Great video! I also saw a tutorial where the person put mineral spirits on the wood a second before starting to apply gel to make the gel stain glide and that looked great too!

    Love this! I’m actually redoing our kitchen table with this stuff and needed to see this video! Would love to see a top coat video, do you have one of those? I’ve looked thru your video list and didn’t see it. Thanks!

    Do you one coat or two coat when you add the top coat? Asking because I’m doing stairs.

    • @katebarreldesigns2684
      @katebarreldesigns2684  3 года назад +1

      If you are doing stairs I would recommend no less than three and make sure you abide by dry time directions for the gel stain and your top coat.

      Thanks for the input. Your video helped me a lot for staining these stairs. You showed how easy it actually is to use gel stain, and that gave me hope that I could do it. I appreciate it very much as this is my first staining project.

    What brand of top coat do you use? I have a can of General Finishes Java Gel Stain & a Can of General Finishes Top Coat, but the top coat is Oil Based. Can I use them together?

    • @katebarreldesigns2684
      @katebarreldesigns2684  3 года назад

      Tambi Jo yes, you can use them together. Gel stain is oil based as well. You can also use a water based topcoat however you need to wait to apply a water based top coat after 72 hrs of applying the gel stain. Directions are on the cans. I recommend reading before making a decision.

    Newbie here...What do you do about the darker areas where you wiped off then overlapped in your next application area? I recently had the same problem using a glaze over a painted piece. How can you do the top of a piece such as this and get an even color without having darker overlap marks?

    • @katebarreldesigns2684
      @katebarreldesigns2684  Год назад

      With gel stain you can use mineral spirits to even out. Glaze is water based, so that’s a bit different. This piece didn’t have any issues with overlapping or darker areas. I have another video on how to glaze.

    Hey Kate! I’m in AZ as well and have a hutch to stain. I started by using a sandpaper to take off the existing finish but when I go to wipe, it literally wipes almost everything off. What roughness of sandpaper is ideal? Are you by chance for hire? I’d prefer to have someone who knows what they’re doing 😊

    • @katebarreldesigns2684
      @katebarreldesigns2684  2 года назад

      Hi Steven,
      I’m not sure what you mean by “literally wipes everything off” do you mean the stain is coming off?
      If it is, this makes me think that you have not gone down to bare wood.
      In my opinion gel stain or any stain really works best when you have removed all the existing finish and you are working with raw wood.
      I do custom work, however, typically only for. A paint stain combo. I don’t do full restores and or restains.
      Hope this helps!

    You mentioned repairing the veneer. I just did the same to our front door (sanded the veneer and repaired A few areas with stainable wood filler ) and now I want to stain. I am wondering if the gel stain will hide the spots I’ve repaired better than penetrating oil based wood stain?

    • @katebarreldesigns2684
      @katebarreldesigns2684  3 года назад

      Typically it will still not cover wood filler, not stain really does.
